  1. Hi, This week I completed some figures from ICM's excellent 1:48 RAF personnel kit and created a grass field base for a Trumpeter Display case to display them together with a my latest creation, a pre-war 72 Squadron RAF Gloster Gladiator. It then occurred to me that the base and case could also be used to rotate the display of other aircraft in my collection from the late pre-war and early second world war period. Apologies for the striped backdrop, but I have yet to figure out the best printer quality settings, hence the vertical lines. Other than these, it is however a fairly accurate depiction of the skyscape at Church Fenton because its the upper section from a picture I took of the Spitfire line-up parked at Flying Legends here in July😀 Amazing how a simple backdrop can make a model pop! All photos were taken with an iPhone 11 Pro. First of all the 72 Sqn Gladiator based at RAF Church Fenton around 1938 Hurricane P3153 US-U for "Euthanasia" of 56 Sqn based at RAF North Weald in summer 1940 Spitfire Mk1 R6835 XT-W of 603 “City of Edinburgh” Sqn based at RAF Hornchurch in Summer 1940 Finally, some shots more featuring the Albion 3-Point Re-fueller. I based this on an example seen briefly in a British Pathe B&W Newsreel, but took some liberties with the brass radiator and red sun-rise Albion logo, which would no doubt in reality have been painted over when the vehicle was camouflaged.

  3. Good evening, Gentlemen. I'm going to share my progress in building this interesting kit. The model is intended for my old chap to add one of the WWII aircrafts in his 1/48 scale collection. Thus the kit has a good chance to be completed in a time, not to be suspended for indefinite period As I am an aircraft-modeller I can tell you nothing about the history of this vehicle except it is a soviet WWII period one.
  4. After finishing my Esci/Humbrol Dodge weapons carrier, I was originally going to do a plane next, but then my eyes fell on this, possibly the longest resident of my stash, bought in (I think) 1995 from the sadly now-closed Shrewsbury Model Centre. Look at that price!! 146 by Dan Hardy, on Flickr Not a lot of plastic. 147 by Dan Hardy, on Flickr Was originally going to do a build thread for this, but then just got carried away and built it! Finally finished it last week, after a longer than intended hiatus from modelling over Christmas. Built out of the box, except for adding a windscreen, the warning flag and extra decals from a spare set of Airfix USAAF Bomber Resupply Set decals, that I ordered off Airfix last year. So here it is, finished in 357th Fighter Group markings and photographed appropriately on a piece of hardstanding from Leiston. Annoyingly I noticed while I was photographing it that the tiny "3" decal has come off at the back, so I will have to apply another. 20210130_150304 by Dan Hardy, on Flickr 20210130_150336 by Dan Hardy, on Flickr 20210130_150358 by Dan Hardy, on Flickr 20210130_150426 by Dan Hardy, on Flickr 20210130_150500 by Dan Hardy, on Flickr 20210130_150514 by Dan Hardy, on Flickr 20210130_150629 by Dan Hardy, on Flickr 20210130_150645 by Dan Hardy, on Flickr
  5. I am not sure if this is the correct place to put this but it is a bit of a niche question. I am currently looking to make a model of (part of) RAF Harwell. I currently work on the site where it used to be and am trying to find old images of it. There are some out there but nothing beyond a few tentative ones where they are not sure if it is or isn't Harwell. I was firstly wondering if anybody had any better photos of the place, or secondly are there any better places to look for photos. I have found aerial photography of the airfield when it had concrete runways, but I would like to find something from when it had grass runways, which was most of its existence. Also, any information anybody has on the area or the site it would be greatly appreciated!
  6. Hello there! About to start a new project here and I thought I would share every step with you. I have the intention of building all the new Tamiya kits that come out and I finding a way to integrate them into a (hopefully) cool diorama. The first kit in line is the Tamiya 1/48 SS-100 German Heavy Tractor. The build of that kit will be available soon on the thread for military vehicles. I made the decision that this diorama would take place at the Bologna airfield in 1944 because it is possible that the particular SS-100 I'm going to build was stationed there along with the recon Me109's of NAGr.11. So I had a SS-100 from a Flak unit and an me 109, now how to integrate them into an appealing diorama. Well, here is what I came up with so far, tell me what you think of it. Pretty packed scene, have to see if it's too much in the end or not. I'd be glad to recieve any criticism from any of you and will post future updates here once the diorama gets going. In the meantime I'll be giving regular updates on the German Tractor build on the other thread. Kind regards, Jack
  7. It was only recently that I came back to plastic models since my childhood as I have my own children now and they are into planes. I've built a few of late and I really needed somewhere to stick them (as well as their bedroom ceiling) and as I have never made a diorama before, I felt it was about time I gave it a try so here goes. Bear with me as it may take me some time as I work full time and have 2 young boys to entertain. I value opinion at any level so please feel free to comment good or bad. The theme is a generic WW2 fighter base/Airfield around early summer 1941 and is going to be as much about developing different techniques and processes as I go along. Hope you enjoy how this progresses. Deano
  8. Hi all, I've just got a small query concerning airfields in England. Would a Spitfire F Mk. 22 be seen on the same airfield as a Gloster Meteor? Thanks in advance, Cam
  9. Hi All Looking for a bit of help from the diorama dudes out there. As most of the kits I build are of WW2 Aircraft I often like to present them on their own base depicting a stationary Aircraft parked as most were on Grass. Currently I will use a Landscape mat then apply PVA and sprinkle on a static grass dusting to break it up ,it looks ok but is a bit of a pain to do and seems to shed bits as time goes on. Surely there must be a better way , perhaps a mat all pre done that simulates a grass airstrip and not a snooker table , I found this online http://www.polakmodel.com/en/vyrobky/main/Meadows-type-A/and it looks perfect but they don' t ship to the UK. Can anyone recommend a product or a better way of achieving this effect. Thanks In advance
  10. The Toyota G series of trucks was built in huge numbers by the Japanese with the GB alone amassing 19870 units between 1938 and 1942. Hasegawa first released this 1/72 version complete with Hucks Starter in 1978. Unfortunately it's noted as 'retired' on their site but it pops up occasionally from the usual 2nd hand suppliers. I was planning on starting it in a week or two but plans change and out it came ahead of schedule. So is it worth building?...lets find out..
  11. Merry Christmas, everyone! I was just looking around the web for possible candidates to fill in the GA parking stands on my prospective airfield apron. The A320s and 737s were catered for, but what about some Cessna & Co. in 1/144?... I came across a couple of online shops offering 3D-printing services which already have a good portion of aircraft, vehicles and airfield equipment in their portfolio: http://www.shapeways.com/search?q=1%2F144&s=0#more-products There are many items ranging from helicopters to WWI fighters, from Etendards to AMXs, from Tucanos to Lynxes, from firetrucks to access steps/ ladders and dinosaurs (it takes a bit to go through the couple of thousands of lines) and I am not commenting on the prices, but should you "require" a certain subject - like me with the Citation Excel and, say, some Skyhawk - then it might be worth a look. *** The other shop is click2detail: https://www.click2detail.com/store/c27/1%3A144.html Here, the product range might be a bit smaller in 1/144, but very much worth a look given the aircraft subjects aaaaaaaaand ... ...the 1/72 Global Express and 1/72 Sentinel R.1 [incl. markings by DRAW Decal] kits Apologies if this has been posted before. I did a quick search upfront but found nothing
  12. Hi there can someone help me please... I wish to create a small piece of RAF Taxi way / Airfield for my Vulcan over in WIP. I was thinking something simple tarmak, bit of grass. but can anyone give any tips or things I might wish to include. Cheers Rob
  13. Hi, Does anyone know what the dimensions of the circular dispersal points on bomber command airfields would have been during world war 2? The reason I ask is that I'm trying to complete a diorama of a bomber command dispersal point but I can't find anywhere on the internet any info or pictures that would help and I was hoping that somebody on here might know. Many thanks, Rich
