  1. Hi all, I'm in with this, hopefully there's enough time to complete this - time will tell! Anyway here's what I intend to use: Untitled by bryn robinson, on Flickr Untitled by bryn robinson, on Flickr Untitled by bryn robinson, on Flickr Untitled by bryn robinson, on Flickr Untitled by bryn robinson, on Flickr
  2. Hello All, I got a bit stalled with my Wessex build so I cracked open the Academy Mustang III. I bought this ages ago. It seems like a very nice kit. There is web discussion about the shape of the canopy windscreen and the kink on the inner wing leading edge. It looks like a Mustang to me/It's only a hobby. Interior detail was very nice and construction proceeded apace. It fits like a dream. The main fuselage has a tiny blip which I left on, thinking it might be an air vent, but when I realised it was the start of the fin fillet, I sanded it off! The only addition was some foil and fuse wire seat belts, which I was almost sad to do because the detail in the chair is so nice! I used Revell Aqua 79 "blue grey" for Ocean Grey, and it looks a lot lighter and bluer (and better) than Humbrol 106, which is my usual go-to. Green was Humbrol Acrylic 116 and the underside was Humbrol Satin 165 Mediun Sea Grey (a bit translucent for my taste), which looks slightly browner (and better?) than my usual Humbrol 64. Decals were usual Academy fare, prone to silvering and hard to get bedded. I replaced a lot of the smaller stencil decals with rows of squiggly dots from my 0.1mm permanent marker. It was at this point that I looked at some photos on the web to get a feel for the weathering and exhaust stains. So there are quite a few pictures of Eugeniusz Horbaczewski and his Mustang, all of which show a white nose and wing ID stripes. Oh well, out with the masking tape to paint white over camouflage... I decided that the Malcolm canopy in the kit looks a bit too bulbous closed up and I wanted to show off the interior. The kit one doesn't fit in the open position. So I crash moulded a new one over the kit canopy. Pack the canopy with blu-tak for strength and mount it on a cocktail stick. Cut up some clear packing material, hold it between two bulldog clips, heat over the gas stove and pull it over the canopy when it gets floppy (not too floppy!). Pull it down hard enough to capture the top curve and bring the bulldog clips together under the canopy to catch all the edges. You can see the lower edge of the canopy is captured very sharply, which makes it easy to trim to shape. I will put some photos in RFI when the English Summer lets the sun come out to play! Thanks for looking, Adrian
  3. P-38 Lightning Upgrade Sets (for Academy/Eduard) 1:48 Eduard Brassin Following Eduard's recent reboxing of the Academy P-38J in their "Over Europe" Limited Edition, plus other reboxings from time to time, we now have a couple of sets aimed at improving the detail further on those kits. The smaller set arrives in the familiar Brassin clamshell box, with the resin parts safely cocooned on dark grey foam inserts, and the instructions sandwiched between the two halves, doubling as the header card. The larger set is hidden away in their larger rectangular cardboard box that is lined with more foam. P-38J Cockpit Set (648259) The set is secured in three ziplok bags, containing two bags with 17 resin parts plus one in clear resin, and a nickel plated, pre-painted Photo-Etch (PE) set that is protected by a piece of white card. It is a complete replacement to the kit cockpit, and requires no alteration to the kit, but as should always be the case, do check this before committing to glue. The highly detailed seat is decked out with a full set of pre-painted crew belts and attached to the cockpit floor with a number of tubular brackets against the rear bulkhead. The rear deck and seat armour are added, with a pair of equipment boxes on the shelf, replete with some nice PE stencils. The control column is inserted into the floor with the W-shaped wheel at the top, and Rudder pedals are attached to a linkage and suspended over the floor in notches in the cockpit sidewall parts, which are detailed up with some controls in PE, and another ledge in the sidewalls accepts the laminated PE and resin instrument panel. The clear resin part is the gunsight, which sits inside the front of the kit canopy on a PE mount. When all of this is complete and painted, it is just inserted into the upper fuselage "egg" and the rest of the build can continue. P-38 Wheels (648258) Inside the clamshell are three resin wheels, four resin hubs, a small fret of PE, and a sheet of pre-cut wheel masks on kabuki tape. The main wheels have diamond pattern tread, while the nose wheel has oval pattern, with the detail throughout superb! The optional PE flat hub covers can be fitted to the outer side of the main wheels and both sides of the nose wheel, using the etched hole to avoid fouling the axle. Whether you'd want to cover up all that lovely detail other than accuracy's sake is another matter however. The masks allow you to paint the hubs after the tyres and get a neat demarcation line with minimal fuss. Review sample courtesy of
  4. Hi folks, Here goes the WIP for my (I hope) Phabulous Phantom from Academy. The cockpit is quite nice. I painted it FS36231 using Lifecolor (I strongly dislike this brand, can't get the thinning right, so I blame my incompetence on the paint...), Humbrol gloss black and clear red, and the details were highlited using a tubular pen with a 0.13 tip and white and red inks: img]http://su22m4.free.fr/f-4b/f-4b008.JPG[/img] The front wheel well is made of 5 parts that go under the cockpit floor: The cockpit is then glued to the front part of the belly: The bely is then assembled. I used standard glue, and strengthened the joint with CA glue: I just put the fuselage on top of the assembly. The multiolored plastic reminds a wee bit of Matchbox: Next: main wheel wells, intakes and nozzles. Cheers, S.
  5. Hey all, back again This was a kit I got for my birthday and which I've just completed. The vehicle itself is fully painted and partially weathered with a wash. I'm still deciding on what type of diorama base I want to do for it, so further weathering is on hold for the time being Vehicle is completely OOB, with a few additions and modifications. Additions include the CIP panel on the hood, as well extra kit on the two as yet unpainted figures, taken from a Meng equipment set and spares from a Masterbox set. The gunner supplied with this kit (the guy at the back) didn't seem to work with the turret too well, but luckily his pose lends itself well to where I've decided to stand him. I also kitted him out with a CamelBak and helmet from the Meng kit. The replacement gunner is from the Masterbox set, but posed a bit of a problem. Where the M2 was originally positioned, as designed in the kit, it was too low for him to look like he was gripping it. As a result, I had to glue a small section of sprue onto its mounting to raise it up, as well as move the gunshield up a bit. Luckily the darker colours hide the bit of mounting visible through the glass Another note about the supplied figures is that the driver is bigger than he should be, and doesn't actually match his picture. His right leg is depicted as being straight in the instructions, but is bent on the actual molding. He just barely fits into position as disembarking. I had another figure from the Masterbox kit that I had planned to use, but again due to size restrictions inside the vehicle, I'll have to use him with something else, possible my upcoming Bradley. Other extras on the vehicle include the stowage, some of which came from the Tamiya equipment set, others from two Meng sets, which includes the hardcase in the back, the cooler and the M82 in the gunner cupola. I can't recall what the M136 is from; a Dragon figure kit, perhaps. Although the instructions can be a little misleading at times, and some smaller parts very easy to snap, this kit went together pretty well. My intention for the diorama (along with my Abrams and Bradley) is to depict its deployment into an East Asia conflict, providing options for either a snippet of an urban setting, or something muddy. Anyway, that's a large enough wall of text. Time for pics Gaz
  6. Hi all, I finally gathered the courage and decided I'd join the group build. Common sense prevailed and I stuck with a project that would not take up too much space. Namely, I'm going to clean my stash of all remaining Hobbycraft I-16s. I made a few of these in my youth, unfortunately they were dumped in the bin by Mother dear after I left home . Only one survives and that's because it was being refurbished. Unnecessary bits from the Eduard and Ark kits ought to simplify things and improve accuracy. Unfortunately it seems I'm already off to a rocky start and today's work will be mostly undoing the damage I've done yesterday. The first specimen is meant to be a Type 5 and has had some work done on it, well below the 25% threshold I'd say: (In the background you can see the lone survivor, but it will not enter this GB). Reinforcements from the rear: the Eduard type 29 does not need these. I still need to raid the Ark kit for any piece it can shed. Now for my own embarrassment:undersurfaces from the other kit which I mean to build as a rocket-armed Type 24. I must have been modelling DUI because I thought at first that I could move the entire exhaust area to its correct location and only later I saw the folly of my actions. So I blanked the existing exhaustes and drilled holes in the new wrong position! I have plugged the holes with stretched sprue, now I'm left with the reinforcement and rescribing of the port side. In short I made a dog's meal of the piece. I'd like to say things can only improve from here, but I know myself...
  7. F-4J interior 1975 modification - for Academy Kit 1:48 Eduard The Academy F-4's are now becoming the new standard for this legendary aircraft. This set from Eduard provides one colour fret on nickel plated metal and one brass fret. The coloured fret provides mainly cockpit details with new instrument panels side consoles, and cockpit interior parts. The brass fret provides details for the canopy rails and sills, plus the canopy frames. A new HUD is provided along with framing for the parts between the cockpits. Conclusion These frets should enhance an already great kit. Highly Recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  8. Kit - Academy 1:48 Paint - All Xtracolour enamels. Decals - Superscale 48-753 & Microscale 48-063 (stencils) Extras - Aeroclub white metal ACES 2 seat, AIM-9P from Hasegawa Weapons Set B F-15A Eagle Assigned to Commander: 5th FIS, Air Defence Command Minot AFB, 1987 Definitely not one from the 'top drawer' but looks quite imposing in the cabinet (as long as you don't look too closely). My thanks taking the time to look and/or comment, and as ever all criticism, comments and questions are welcome. Ian.

  10. Hi fellow modellers! Iwould like to introduce you my recently completed Cessna A-37B Dragonfly. This is a simple and straightforward kit to build. It has some fitting problems, but that´s fine. I added some Eduard PE to add a nice touch on the details. The only problem with this kit are the decals.... the worst i have ever used. i tried to improve them by painting over the silvering they left. I hope you like it and every comment is welcomed! Best regards form Uruguay. Ignacio
  11. Please help me, I'm lost! I need to get a king tiger before I go mad. I've been inspired by PlaStix to build a king tiger (tiger II) but I am not sure which kit and aftermarket parts to go for. Should I go with the Eduard kit and PE/resin or Tamiya and PE/resin? So let your wisdom guide me!
  12. Yesterday Mark suggested a 24-hour build in honour of Mike (BM owner)'s birthday. Never one to turn down a challenge, i accepted! I started at 8.45 this morning with this: (Pics are timestamped - no cheating!) And finished a while ago with this: First time I've ever tried anything like that, and very pleased with the result! It's not a subject I'd usually tackle, and in a scale I would very rarely venture into. Happy Birthday Mike! Al
  13. Hunter Mk.59 Iraqi Airforce 6 day war 1967 Academy 1/48 one GB ended, so let us start a new one.... . just joking, really looking forward to this one for more than a year now! quite a lot of reseach already done last year in preparation for this GB, you guys helped tremendously already!!! http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234975520-hunter-mk59-mk59a-iraqi-airforce-questions-for-the-hunter-specialists/?hl=hunter here is what I have for now, I hope this will suffice As I understand it, the FGA.9 boxing is the way to go, only diference being the flaps and exhaust area (which will be replaced by PJ prodctions version anyways) some things I observed: wheels: Academy ones are said to be too skinny, but now????: quite a difference here in detail and proportions....... what do you think?? the same here in the cockpit area hard to think these represent basically the same..... both a vast improvement over the kit items nonetheless Werner
  14. First of all, please excuse the quality of the pictures. Photography isn't my strong suit. I must say, I'm just a little chuffed at the way this has turned out. The fit was more of a wrestling match at times and the decals weren't good for the nerves. In the end they came out great, you really have to look hard to find the edge of the carrier film. Comments of any kind welcome. Thanks for looking.
  15. F-4J Phantom Update Sets 1:48Eduard - For Academy kit The Academy F-4 series are great kits in their own right, even in today's world of ever expanding mould quality there are areas in which resin still provides extra detail. Exhausts These three part resin and two part PE exhausts really do pop with the detail. Wheels The resin wheels do pop with detail you just dont see o the kit parts. Overall these new parts from Eduard do provide an advancement over the kit parts. Highly recommended. Review samples courtesy of
  16. Hello, I am searchng for external apperance of the Hawker Hunter Mk.59 and Mk.59A as sold to Iraq in the 1960ies. AS far as iI know, they they were converted from Hunter F.6s form the Belgium and Dutch to FGA.9 airforces by Hawker. so my questions in respect to the Academy Hunter in 1/48: what are the (external) differences between the Mk.59 and Mk.59A? which tail cone would be appropriate? which gun nozzles (with deflector?) any other things to consider? I am thinking of at least a replacement ejection seat... any detail to qatch out for? thanks a lot, Hunter specialists!
  17. Hi all, Just picked up an Academy 1/48 F-111C (the newer release with updated moldings etc) for a bargain price and was wondering if it is possible to build an F-111E or F from the kit. I don't know enough about the aircraft myself but I'm sure there are some of you knowledgeable types out there who will know whether it can be done or not. Thanks for looking. Craig.
  18. I've been a member here for a while now and I'm constantly amazed at the level of craftsmanship thats on display here. It makes for some great daily reading. So, I thought it was about time I made my own contribution. Whilst I realise I'm nowhere near the level of most people on here, I love the challenge. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and it's all good practice for the next project. Enough about that though, time to present my intended build. The kit itself was picked up long ago from Modelzone for the bargain price of £8 and then slowly added to as and when I came across the parts I wanted. As you can see the 'battle' has already commenced. The Aires cockpit didn't need much to get a decent fit but to get everything lined up took forever. This was the main reason for building the front section first, after reading so many horror stories about the fit of some Aires sets, I wanted to make sure that everything was in nice and snug. And to be fair, this is the third cockpit set I've used and none have been that bad to deal with. The main problem now comes from the kit itself. The two main sections were not even close to being a match. Started by trying to get the best fit and alinement on top. Shouldn't be too bad after a quick run over with the sanding sticks. Hopefully! The underside is another story though.... My plan of attack is now to try and attach the intakes by clamping them tightly at the front using super glue. During dry fits it all seems to come close to being brought back into line. Then, I was thinking of dropping the bottom half into some hot water to take some of the natural 'spring' and tension out of the plastic. I'm hoping to end up with something that's a lot closer than this anyway. That's all for now, hope to be able to share the results a little later. Cheers and thanks for reading.
  19. A bit of a late start, as January and the beginning of February were really busy at work. Have a little time now as recuperating from a minor op so am launching back into some modelling. As time is limited, and I'm a slow finisher, I thought something straightforward for this GB. So a toss up between these two great British icons. I have gone for the Camel for two reasons. The first and romantic reason is part of our campus where I work there was originally a Sopwith/Hawker factory and Kingston up till a few years ago had a rich Sopwith/Hawker/HS/Bae heritage of aircraft manufacture. The second is pragmatic. It's pretty simple and I should be able to finish it in time. It's a neat little kit, simple but well moulded with sharp details for its age. I'll probably dig out a seat and seat belts from the stash but otherwise straight OOB. If time permits I'll move onto the Seafire.
  20. And so here it is,the F86 I was working on for the past month. Now before I go any further I must say how this nowhere near my current standard, and for a couple of times I almost threw it in the bin...The kit itself is meh,The detail is very good but not a single exterior part would fit without filler, lots of it.And the decals are just useless,I haven't seen such bad decals in a...well,never.And as you might see I left the canopy sliding freely. But enough typing words, here are the pictures:
  21. The F4 is just about done and a new project has been started So far I've only managed to build the engine (100%) (and btw, this is the first time I've done a heatshield with alu. foil so it looks kinda like p.o.s.). And the cockpit has just been started aswell...
  22. Hi fellow modellers, this is my last finished project. It´s the nice PBY-5A Catalina from Academy in 1/72. i added some extras like Eduard PE and Starfighter decals to depict the first allied airplane to land in Guadalcanal in 1942. Althought I don´t think it carried any bombs, I choose to use some on my model. Build is very straightforward. It was painted with Testors acrylics and oil washed. Smoke stains were made with pastel chalks. I hope you like it and every comment and critics are welcomed! Best regards from Uruguay! Ignacio
  23. Something a little different from me - I'm doing a pair of Thunderbolt models of the same a/c, one in USAAF colours, the other German, as shown on the sheet below. I've had this particular sheet from Cutting Edge since my UK visit in 2007 (!!), and haven't managed to do anything with it - this GB is a good place to start, I think. To that end, I have 3 Academy P-47D kits, 2 of which will be used for this GB as a joint build - appropriate, seeing as they will be representing the aircraft named 'Beetle', as flown (and lost) by 2nd Lt William Roach, 358th FS, 355th FG, 8th AF both while it was in his charge and then as it was operated by the Germans, in the guise of 2./VVB OKL (aka Wanderzirkus Rosarius) at Wunstorf, July '44. The 3rd P-47 will at some point in the future fill the role of the other captured a/c on this sheet. Also on the sheet are a Mosquito and a couple of P-51s, which may be my entries in the upcoming STGBs for those types - we'll see. Obligatory box/sprue shots to start Those of you with a keen eye may notice the missing bits - bombs, drop tanks, and one of the props. They were cut out and dispatched to a fellow BMer at some point last year when he put out a call for P-47 things. I knew I wouldn't need them for these builds, so off they went. I hope they were useful. The kits are apparently not perfect, but they look like P-47s, which is close enough for me. A major attraction is that they're pretty simple kits, which should allow me to get them done in the allotted time span - like many of us, I find that I have signed up for rather too many GBs this year (it was a vintage crop, so whaddaryagunnado?) Before I start these, I plan to finish my Gnat for the Made in GB GB, then I'll be right into these. For thems as might be interested, Lt. Roach was on only his 3rd mission when it all went pear-shaped. On November 7, 1943, escorting B-17's of the 8th Air Force's 1st and 3rd Air Divisions, he became disoriented in poor weather, and with his fuel running low (and after watching the squadron leader crash land), he began looking for an airfield for an emergency landing. Lt. Roach spotted a runway and landed, then followed a vehicle to a parking place and shut down. He then realised that the people surrounding the plane were Germans - must have been a little bit sad-making for the poor chap. Lt. Roach had inadvertently provided the Luftwaffe with its first intact P-47D-2-RA, and spent the remainder of the war at Stalag Luft I. He survived the war, rejoined the USAF and died in 2010 at the age of 88. So although it's a bit of a sad story, it's a funny and sort of good one too. (Thanks to Warbirds Resource Group for the potted history.)
  24. Another day, another model. I've not done any Russian birds before, so this will be new for me. I'm aware of the kits shape issues, but I'm not really that bothered by them, so will be building OOB. On to the pictures. 01 - Boxart 02 - Instructions 03 - Sprues 04 - Sprues & decals 05 - Sprues 06 - Sprues Looking forward to playing with this one, as it will give me an opportunity to properly try out the AKAH paints I bought at SMW two years ago! Good hunting!
  25. This one is straight out of the box. It's not a bad model at all, so long as you sand down some of the interior so the fuselage closes up without force and you take your time ensuring a close fit of the windscreen. Tamiya khaki drab is the base colour, with MiG pigment and Tamiya weathering powders used to give it a well worn look.
