  5. Over in this topic we started chatting about accuracy/dimensions of kits, in 1/72 scale, and that prompted me to break out my caliper and do some measuring. I was asked to start a new thread with just the measurements, and here it is. Hopefully others can add for the other kits out there. I find it useful to know which kits are just a bit off (I've yet to find one that is perfect) and in which dimension (chord, span, length, height). Error is ~+/- 0.0025 (I can reliably judge the value to halfway between gradations, which are 0.01; but it may be off by half that half. Any errors are my own. All measurements in inches, unless otherwise noted. Reference is "Spitfire Mk. IX & XVI Engineered", Paul H. Montforten, 2007. Full size values taken from Montforten. Frames are vertical members in the fuselage, stations are vertical members of the wing (aka ribs). First, wings. Measurements from pages 7.28 (span) and 7.31 (chord). Edit: Removed original photo to avoid confusion with update. Next fuselage. This started as an effort shared by Edgar Brooks, I simply took his original idea and expanded on it. For those who may care: A = Frame 5 (aka datum or firewall) B = Frame 8 C = L/e of door opening, not on a frame D = Frame 11, albeit Frame 11 is slightly aft of the panel line (an inch?) E = Frame 15 F = Empennage break, aft of Frame 18a, last vertical G = Rudder post 0-G = 326.64 inches or 4.537" at 1/72 Measurements of full size is on page 2.32 of Montforten for fuselage, for empennage on page 6.18. Edit: Removed original photo to avoid confusion with update. Summary: Overall the Airfix F IX is the closest to Montforten, both for the fuselage and wings. The AZ and Sword kits are short in the fuselage, but not the empennage, strangely. However, and I have to stress this, no Spitfire kit is "perfect" in terms of dimensions. All are off by just a few thousands of an inch, and unless one is comparing them at the mating surfaces, it is very difficult to see them as "off", to my eye. Personally, I prefer the Airfix IX for an early, full span IX, and the AZ for the later clipped wing IX/XVI (standard high back), but the Sword for the XVI RV (rear view or bubble top) (although I have quite a few Heller XVI RV on my shelf!). Both the AZ and Sword kits are lean in the fuselage at Fr 15 by about 1mm. See photos below... First - AZ left fuselage superimposed on Airfix right fuselage half: Secondly - AZ right fuselage superimposed on Sword left fuselage half (near perfect alignment, albeit length is obviously short): I am still doing some analysis of the Airfix PR XIX. The wings and fuselage are interchangeable with the Airfix IX kit (great for cross kitting to make the PR X/XI or F XIV) to determine how "off" it may be. Preliminarily it seems the nose is not too far off, but I still don't have a great reference value for the nose lengths (0-Fr 5), so much more to do in this area. Since I had the fuselages taped together... Left photo: AZ is on left (tan) and Airfix on right (light gray). Right photo: Sword on left (dark gray) and AZ on right (tan). Hope you find this useful. Tim

  10. This is AZmodel's 72nd scale Boeing P-26. Brengun PE detail was added (mainly intererior), and resin Wasp engine from RADIAL ENGINES &WHEELS. This is a 'whif' (what if) project, story is: ... with the Canadian economy finally recovering from the Great Depression, the RCAF began pressing the government for the need to modernize their air force. Looking to their neighbours to the south, a deal was struck to procure a single aircraft for testing purposes. In exchange for the Peashooter, an undisclosed amount of beer, bacon and maple syrup was shipped across the border. regards, Jack

  15. Here is a slightly different take on the AZModel's 1/72 spit. I got this one in a bag of parts and without major decals. Browsing through the net to find some different liveries for the Spit, I came across the Velvetta II operation spits on their ferry to Israel from Czechoslovakia via Yugoslavia. They landed on Podgorica airfield, and in order to do so, Yugoslav markings were painted on the spits. Spits were surplus Czech ones. The spits carried in addition to the slipper tank, a pair of Me-109 fuel tanks on wing fittings. So here it goes, a weathered spit with Me fuel tanks and different markings. The kit is the AZ one, built OOB, with added slipper tank, ME fuel tanks from ED Me-110 kit and decals from SKY-Decals sheet provided by a friend. Painted in Tamia acrylics (the new RAF range) with the ME fuel tanks painted in RLM-76. Weathered with pastels and oil washes (heavily). Thanks for looking.

  17. Hi Folks, here is my AZModel Bf109 Erla built G14 of 15/JG5 based in Norway in May 1945. The kit included the markings for this aircraft however I had a set of Eaglecal decals that also had them so I used those as they appeared to be a slightly better quality. The kit was built OOB with the exception of the pitot tube which is brass tube and wire. Painted using a mixture of Mr Color and Mr Hobby paints and given a light dusting of some pastel chalks for the exhaust and dust. I built this one alongside AZModel's G5 kit and the comments I made about the fit (of the engine cowls in particular) stand for this one too. I made a few mistakes, sanding off details that should have stayed in place, but the instructions are quite vague as they are generic to all the AZModel 109's so check your references often. I copied a profile from the MMP Book, "Bf109 Late Versions, Camouflage and Markings" for the colour scheme. This kit fills a gap in my Bf109 collection as I don't think there was an off the shelf G14 in 1/72 available until this came out * (although it isn't particularly difficult to convert a decent G6 kit). I had a problem with Humbrol's Clear crazing prior to decaling the kit so I haven't used my usual techniques for weathering but I'm calling this one finished anyway. This was the profile I was aiming for And with it's G6 stablemate Duncan B * I had obviously forgotten about the Hasegawa and Academy offerings or my mind had blanked them out possibly
  18. Hi Folks, here is my AZmodel Bf109G5 built as Hptm Gerhard Barkhorn's ERLA built G6 of II/JG52 in the summer of 1943. The kit includes these decals and states that it is a G5 however looking at the photos in the book, Classic Colours Jagdwaffe Vol 4 Sec 3, it would appear to be a G6. I have also been told that II/JG52 were not issued with G5's at that time but I don't have that information to hand. Built OOB with only the pitot tube replaced by wire and brass tubing and painted using a mixture of Mr Color and Mr Hobby paints. I found this kit to be quite a trial compared with the Finemolds 109s as the instructions were a bit vague being generic for the whole series of 109 kits that AZModel released and the breakdown and fit of parts was sometimes problematic. I did appreciate that the kit includes many optional parts that went straight into the spares box. The shape of the front end looks a bit too thin compared with the Finemolds kits but I can live with that. So this was the profile that I was trying to follow I had a problem with Humbrol Clear crazing when I applied it as the gloss coat before decaling so I didn't risk doing my usual routine of washes and weathering but luckily it looks ok from a few feet away. Duncan B
