  1. Here’s my entry for this GB: the AZ Model Bell X-2 in 1/72. AZ offer a separate boxing for each of the two aircraft produced, although I believe they only differ in the decals. I bought the one for 46-675. This was the first one to fly, initially as a glider, as the engine was slated for 46-674. In the event, an engine was first installed in -675, but during a captive carry flight over Lake Ontario to test airborne procedures, an explosion occurred: X-2 pilot Skip Ziegler and B-50 mothership crewmember Frank Wolko were both lost without trace. The X-2 disintegrated with the debris falling into the lake below, but the B-50 managed to limp back to base and was written off. The other X-2 went on to be the first aircraft to fly at Mach 3, but was lost on the same flight as the aircraft became uncontrollable after turning for home. Although pilot Mel Apt jettisoned the escape capsule, he could not extricate himself in time before it struck the ground and was killed. On to the kit. Here's what you get for your money: My plan is to depict the aircraft as was very early in its life, essentially option 1 in the kit. I have a couple of references that are useful. The Osprey book, while being very readable, unfortunately has no drawings or even dimensional data. The Jay Miller book does have some data and a drawing, but there are some discrepancies with other sources. I did find another drawing on the internet, but I don’t know how good that is either. A lack of references and surviving aircraft makes accurate modelling somewhat difficult! One thing that is immediately apparent is that AZ have got the wing positioned too far forward. Scaling from as many drawings and photos as possible, I reckon the wing leading edge should be about 10mm further aft than on the kit. It’s enough to throw off the look of the model, so I’ll be trying to rectify that. There are also, no doubt, other anomalies, perhaps not surprising given the lack of references and changes made during the programme: for example the landing skids evolved during testing. I will have to rely on photos of my chosen aircraft at a given moment in time to try to get it as right as possible! Thanks for looking, Mike
  2. OK! Back at it! Some more from 19 Sq. and a relatively new kit from AZ Model. First blush looks alright. I'll get into it later this week. Pretty box art... Clean looking plastic parts and decals... And a simple profile to manage... --John
  3. Hello everyone, Bf109 G-14 by AZ model, not a great kit but it was cheap 😀 Added small PE set for cockpit and vacu canopy. Decals are by Peddinghaus, which were sadly not very good; you can see thru the white and they have some inaccuracies Also carrier film is not pre-cutted so you have be careful when cutting them out Airbrushed with AK Real colors Weathering done with oil paints and crayons Enjoy! George
  4. AZ Models are not the easiest to work with. This build required a lot of patience, drilling, sanding, filling and cussing. Since Eduard came out with 1/72 scale Mk VIIIs, I don't think I will put myself through building an AZ Model kit for a while. The canopy is Italeri, rest is straight OOB. This was the WWII ace Wing Commander Frank (Chota) Carey's Spitfire based out of RAF Amarda Road, Odisha, India 1944. Colors are Mr. Hobby Dark Green and Flat Earth and Tamiya Media Sea Grey. Seat belts are scratch using masking tape. Hope you like it!
  5. Good evening This Week end I started another build the AZmodel Kp P 51 B Mustang The box art The sprues The Decals sheet I will represent the aircraft flown by Lieutenant Daniel ZOERB a 7 victories ace of the 5 Fighter Squadron 52 Fighter Group based at Madna Italy June 1944 I started by painting some parts pieces Patrice
  6. This is AZ Models' Hurricane V with the Vickers S guns from the 3D Kits conversion set built as an aircraft of 3 Squadron RIAF, taking part in Operation Zipper, sometime in the end of the monsoons in 1945. The Hurricane V was a Hurricane IV powered by a Merlin 32 and driving a four-bladed Rotol propeller. Intended for service in Burma, two such prototypes were built but faced engine overheating problems and were back-converted to Mark IVs again. The kit is the AZ Models Hurricane IV with added parts (though the wing panels don't seem to match the Mark IV's). The build was not too bad but trying to get the cockpit to sit upright led to a bad gap between the wings and fuselage which needed to be filled. The way the sprue gates bit into the kit's Vickers S gun barrels led me to buy the 3D Kits Hurricane IID set for replacement guns. I built this Mk.V as a whif as an excuse try out some decals: a Print Scale decal sheet, which had other markings I wanted to use, and some ancient-looking Almark SEAC markings from Hannants and wanted to try them out as well. The latter were fine, but the Print Scale stencils were undersized. I also like the look of a four-bladed Hurricane: it would have been interesting to pose it (tropicalized) against a Hawker Tornado prototype and a Typhoon to see how its 'look' evolved. The camouflage scheme was inspired by a remark from a pilot of 20 Squadron RAF (quoted in Forgotten Voices of Burma: the Second World War's Forgotten Conflict-I don't have the book with me anymore so I can't name him) on how disguised Japanese vehicles stood out as more khaki than the regular forest canopy. Being literal-minded, I used Humbrol 159 (Khaki Drab) and 149 (Foliage Green) for the greens to recreate this contrast and 119 and a mixture of 98 and 119 for the browns. The underside was White Ensign Colourcoats' Sky Blue. I wanted the second brown to be lighter, but darkened it to avoid it looking like the later South-East Asian camouflage. Comments are welcome. Thanks for looking!
