Hi, I am again uploading my 1/72 Airfix A.W. Whitley made straight from the box. I decided to go for the all black camouflage of 10 Squadron and attempted to enhance the black finish by first applying an overall black, spraying the main panelled area mid grey and finishing with a light overall black hopefully giving a weathered look. This was a really fun build with no issues at all. Latest and probably last completed build for this year is Airfix's Bf110c. Quite a nice little kit that when together easily and only needed a small amount of filler overall, cockpit detail is sparse and I was going to get the Eduard PE set but I managed to pick up one of the Eduard weekend edition Bf110's so that one will get all the extras. This on is OOB, painted with Tamiya acrylics, and dark brown oil paint for the panel lines. The kit decals and stencils are excellent and went on with no issue. As usual any comment are welcome. It is said that comparisons are odious. Well, being called odious is nowhere near the worst that has been said about me... I will be building the new Airfix Beaufighter as well as the Hasegawa one, comparing them as I go. My problem is that I can never make things easy for myself. I could simply build the OOB. That would certainly provide me with a good comparison. But noooooo.... I'm going to mess 'em about. The Airfix kit will be built as a Mk. VIf with a radar nose and non-standard camouflage scheme. The Hasegawa kit will be built as a RAAF Mk. Ic, with flat tailplanes and Australian colours. Hold on tight, rider!

This is the old Airfix kit of Wallis's autogyro, dressed up for the Bond film You Only Live Twice. Ken Wallis used to be proud of the fact the autogyro flew itself "hands off", but I doubt if he could have also fired guns, rockets and flamethrowers at the same time, as Sean Connery is doing in the box art: I scratch-built replacement front weapons pods, since the kit provided little spring-loaded rockets which may be remembered fondly but were thoroughly unrealistic. I added the pitot tube, lateral drift indicator tuft, and a support for the rotor spin up drive head, which weren't included in the kit, as well as a seat cushion and lap belt to hid the horrible kit seat base. I also added some of the more obvious cable runs - spark-plug leads, rudder cables, brake cables, and the control cables for the spin-up drive. And I made a couple of decals from a photograph of the real front weapons pods, to add a bit of detail. I wanted to model it with the rotor supports in place, and the pilot figure looked a bit daft sitting in an aircraft that obviously wasn't ready for flight, so I left him out. Even without the pilot, the kit wants to sit on its front wheel, whereas the real aircraft tilted back on its rear wheel when no-one was on board. So I slipped short lengths of 2mm brass rod into the hollow tubes of the rear flamethrowers before assembly (the only place to hide some weight), and that just tipped the balance in favour of a realistic "nose up" posture. Paint is Humbrol enamel and Alclad. I can't believe this was "Skill Level 2" on the box - it was a very fiddly build, with lots of parts having to marry up in complicated ways. I just hope I never meet a "Skill Level 4"!

Hello All, Life and work (mainly the latter) has kept me busy recently, and I have bitten off a bit more than I want to chew with some recent projects, so a Mojo-restoration was in order. Enter the Airfix Martlet. A lovely kit to build. Not really any in-progress pictures, since it kind of falls together. Hello i have an oppurtunity to grab an older airfix B-25H in 1/72 is it any good ? Honestly i wasn't aware it existed ? Id like to use this for the B-25 Group build coming up in the new year. Or would i be better off waiting for the New tool from Airfix ? Im a fan of mitchells and the gun birds in particular the G & H. If not i’ll stick with my original idea for the group build. Thanks in advance for any answers and help. Dennis

This is Airfix's kit of the Typhoon. Apart from the firing wires for the rockets, it is built completely out of the box. It is a complex build, due to its size, and the impressive level of detail, and there is a bit more flash than expected for such a new kit, otherwise there are no real pitfalls in assembly. I used Xtracolor enamels for the camouflage colours, and the decals are from the kit as well. Thanks for looking ! Angelo.

The old Airfix kit from the 70s, got tougher as it went on, but I finally wrestled it into a Canberra as best as my somewhat limited ability allowed. It looks ok from a distance. Impressive that the decals were perfectly useable after so long too. Satin dark sea grey spray and Tamiya XF-81 green upper, Revell 'light grey' satin spray below. I tried to sand the nose into a more realistic shape after reading a couple of threads on here too. Not sure how accurate it is now but it looks more or less right, I think (!) I do love this era of RAF aircraft, especially ones with massive serials under the wings and bright squadron markings. Critique, praise (unlikely!), ridicule or any other reactions all welcome, it's how we improve. Not too harsh though, I'll never make the IPMS. And yes, it's a tailsitter; I put a bit of blu-tack under the nosewheel!

Finally acquired another of my favourites!

I've been modelling for over 45 years, building models ranging from 1/1200 to 1/3 scales, however this build isn't my story, I'm just the narrator. This build is actually my daughter's work! Now before you start imagining, fingerprints, glue blobs and paint runs and skip to another build thread, the finished model was finished to a high standard and sold for a healthy profit!!! My daughter will be eight years old shortly, and has now been modelling for half her life! She was always handy with scissors, sellotape and glue from a very young age, so I decided to see just how capable she was. I was pleasantly surprised by the results. Her first model build was started when she was just 3 years 11 month old; a Revell Red Arrows Hawk. It was completed five months later with a lot of guidance from me, but much of the work done by her. Build sessions were limited to about 30 minutes due to her concentration span, but gradually she put together a very respectable model. Here's the finished item. In the Autumn of 2014, with the dark nights coming fast, I decided it was time for another build. She was almost five, so I decided on something a little more ambitious; we would go for a diorama! I opted for the Airfix RAF Battle of Britain set as the price was reasonable and the aircraft, tankers, figures and base could each be separate projects, or all worked on while glue and paint dried on other parts. The aircraft wouldn't be finished in BoB colours however, as my daughter wanted a pink aeroplane, so this was going to be a PR Pink Spitfire. We went to the model shop and fortunately they had the set in stock. We came home with a big box, some extra paint and a happy child. This is her Spitfire story.

This model was completed in January this year after a two year build, started just before her 5th birthday. It came from the old Airfix Airfield Diorama set. Hello chums. Here at long last is the RFI of my Airfix Handley Page O/400 that I finished a few months back. I have been working in the Float plane GB since its finale and haven't had the chance to get the photo tent up until that one was finished. WIP The build is based around the "Last Days" wording that I saw in a reference book during the build. This was in reference to the flight performed by Sir Keith Park. "Sir Keith was originally from New Zealand and became an air ace with the Army’s Royal Flying Corps. Initially in the First World War he served as a soldier at Gallipoli and the Somme, but became a pilot and ended the war having shot down 20 enemy aircraft. After the war, at a time when air flight was still in its infancy, he decided to demonstrate what could be accomplished with large aircraft. Sir Keith and his crew of eight flew their Handley Page 0/400 with two 350 h.p. Rolls-Royce engines at an average airspeed of 66mph. The 1,880 mile flight in 1919 took 30 hours in the then state-of-the-art bomber despite unpredictable weather, and returned four days later." A wonderful story I'm sure you'll agree. During the build a few sad occurrences, the death of two of our girls. Belina and Doctor who. ( hens ) below is Belina in her sick pen. And the death of one of my favourite Directors. George A Romero who watches me build all this plastic tom foolery. So as it happens this build and its FRI are dedicated to them all. Well its Christmas time again and while shopping for gifts for others I magically ended up in the hobby section of the toy shop in the local shopping centre, amazingly I managed to escape with only purchasing a 1/72 airfix RAF red arrows gnat kit which was cheap and I could use it to try using a wash for the first time, I convinced myself. My original time frame for this was one day but I couldn't get my air brush working which extended the build to two days. The kit was painted with tamiya XF-7 and clear coated with Tamiya TS-13, decals were set with mr mark softer and panal lines were washed with tamiya panel line accent black I'm mostly happy with the results as this is my 1st airfix kit as well as aircraft build, 1st time using washes, painting canopys and using micro Krystal clear. I did make a few mistakes -breaking off the wings on the top and bottom of the fuselage -overpainting the main wings which restricted the amount of wash detail -I got lazy and used TS-8 to paint the Canopy after masking which made it look like I had used a clear red -accidentally using TS-65 pearl clear because I didn't read the label properly, I didn't fix it and the colour has a slight metallic effect which looks good in person but not show up in photos the wash looks very pronounced on the rear wings because I think I used less paint, also check out the left wing the camera just picks up the pearl effect in the paint

This Skyraider A-1J will be my second build. After a quick glance at the contents, the kit looks as though it could make up into a nice model but I think that I will have to look around for some replacement decals.

Evening all This is very likely to be my last completed model for 2017 - I've been working on it on and off since August and it crossed the finish line this week. I picked up this classic from Airfix at a model show for a mere £20, and set about building it for a bit of nostalgia and a love for one of WWII's unsung heroes (the Spitfire seems to get all the glory!) I built it more or less out of the box, but did use SAC metal undercarriage legs, an Eduard seatbelt set and aftermarket decals from Techmod. A bit of extra piping was added to the engine, but other than that it's as it comes. It fitted together pretty well - at least better than I was expecting for such an old kit. The wing roots were a little tricky and there was plenty of filler needed here - Archer rivets to the rescue to replace those lost in the filling and sanding process. The worst fitting parts were probably the landing light covers and these took a lot of careful trimming to get them flush with the leading edge. Some of the detail is a little clunky and not up to today's standards, but the surface detail is streets ahead of the Trumpeter offering, with beautiful raised rivets and lovely fabric effect on the rear of the fuselage. Paints were from the Xtracolour enamel range, with the flat cote from Humbrol. Hawker Hurricane MkIc, 306 (Polish) Squadron, RAF Ternhill, November 1940. For £20 it was certainly great value for money. Happy modelling! Tom

A friend at work was telling me his primary school teacher was in the Dambuster raid. Top stuff a local bloke in such an important mission. I gonna build his plane. Bought the kit and Eduard Big Ed and blow me down I can't find any reference to a Brian Mattingly DFC on that mission. I came to the conclusion teachers tell S*** Stories to impress the kiddies. The build is going to be fun, never had so much PE to play with. I am on holidays from Fools Paradise and I want a large project to keep me entertained and hopefully this project will end up going well as my last few have not been so satisfying. I have been trying Vallejo paint, I find it very soft and scratch the paint off with my fingernails. A real Gordon Ramsay moment. Box art Thanks for looking Stephen

Hello All, A while ago I built Sea King "Old 66" for the Helicopter GB. For the Vignette GB I went on to build a base incorporating the Apollo 11 command module to show a moment from the mission recovery. I didn't manage to get any decent pictures of it because of time/weather/travel, but I grabbed some today and thought I'd put them up here. Well it's space AND diorama AND aircraft... I photograph outside, and the moving rotors in the first shot are not a fancy effect, but the wind gusting in my back garden! The Sea King is 1/72 and the command module is 1/96. Looking for more info/advice for another kit I have lined up, if anyone could be so kind? Apologies for so many questions, I haven't made models since I was a kid. For the Airfix Javelin FAW.9/9R, with the right decals is it possible to make it as either from 41 sqn at Coltishall or 85 sqn at West Raynham? I have a family link to North Norfolk so wanted to do one of their 'local' Javelins. Is there a decal sheet for these in 1/72? Did either/both fly FAW.9s?

My Airfix Walrus (actually two of them, but I'll save the second for another time) arrived in the mail today, and I couldn't resist getting started. Starting with the usual open box shot: This will be my first biplane in something like 30 years. It'll also be my first attempt at rigging. Is it a bit perverse that I'm actually looking forward to having a crack at rigging? Not sure what colour scheme to go for. I have the Xtradecals on order, but I'm also wondering about whether to do one of the SAR machines that was stationed at RAF Andreas, to carry on my Manx theme. thanks for looking Z

Here's my Airfix 1/48 Walrus, finished as W3037/PV-W of 275 Sqn, RAF Andreas, Isle of Man, 1943. Built for the flying boats and floatplanes group build (if you've not been following this GB, take a look - there's some fantastic modelling going on there). This aircraft ticks a few boxes for me - it fits with my Manx-based aircraft theme, and I wanted to do an ASR Walrus. I had very little photographic evidence to go on - just a photo with half of a 275 Sqn Walrus coded W in the background - so the scheme is a bit speculative. Thanks to info from @Ivor Ramsden I was able to narrow the serial for this aircraft down to one of two and went for W3037 - so I think there's a 50/50 chance that the serial/code tie-up is right. The Airfix Walrus is a lovely kit - I really enjoyed this build. I used very little aftermarket - just some seatbelts from a spare Eduard set, and decals from various sources. The yellow codes were made up by cutting up and rearranging the codes from the ASR option in the kit. I tried Mr Paint acrylics for the first time on this - very pleased with them. This is my first biplane in about 30 years and my first attempt at rigging - not perfect, but showed me that it's nothing to be scared of, and although I'm not necessarily about to go and seek out more biplanes to build there are a couple of kits in the stash that might move up the to-do list now. Hi guys Here is the Airfix Vulcan I recently finished. I built her for a guy who's dad used to be a flight engineer on these before the Black Buck missions of 1982. He had been given the kit by family but never got round to building it. My club West Middlesex were contacted back in July 2016 asking if someone could build this for him. I volunteered as I built one as a kid and wanted to see how she would turn out by today’s standards. At this point I had no idea of the life tribulations that would come up as the build progressed. Everything modelling stalled from October 2016 until March 2017 because we moved house followed a month later the birth of our second child. Roll onto November 2017 and around 110 hours of work, she is finally finished. I decided to build XM607 from Black Buck 1. The aftermath was the famous picture of a string of craters including the single crater on Port Stanley’s runway. The build I was given free rein on this to do and add what I felt the build needed. The first job was to completely re-scribe the entire kit. This took an age but was well worth it. The kits raised details were optimistic to say the least considering how much sanding and filling is needed to get her decent. For aftermarket items I purchased the Master metal refuelling probe, 26 decals cockpit masks and Freightdog’s “Gods of Sea and Fire” decal sheet. Next we had @gazza l offering his stunning homemade turned brass exhausts. These are exquisite and really draw the eye when viewing from the back. Lastly @Jason provided the AN/ALQ-101 ECM pod from his spares box. The aircraft was painted with Gunze. WIP Here Thanks for looking. Hi folks, Having finished my Hunter F6 in Borneo, I made a good start on the Airfix Swift, in fact I got as far as needing primer before finding he Humbrol can I had brought with me had run out! There are no Humbrol suppliers in the jungle, and in fact the nearest remotely likely place was Singapore, a cool 966 miles distant! So the painting, decalling and weathering plus final assembly have been done back in Blighty since the end of May. I added the Eduard interior and exterior etch set, although I didn't bother buying the flap set as the kit offerings were pretty good (good enough, in fact, to tempt me into posing them lowered. I very rarely do this!) I also added quite a lot of wiring into the undercarriage bays. This is a nice kit although rather lacking in moulding quality in places. The slide moulding of the upper rear fuselage in particular had left some nasty steps and doubled panel lines which I spent a while cleaning up before I even started. The cockpit, however, is very good, as are the multi-piece intakes and exhaust. The only place rather lacking in detail is the wheel bays, hence my extra effort here. It's brush-painted as per usual, with markings OOB as WK275 of 79 Squadron RAF based at Gütersloh in the late 1950s (the aircraft is now at the Tangmere museum). Hope you like! Some of my wiring and the Eduard etch in the undercarriage bays. Typical, I've just spotted a couple of places that need a touch-up! Last but not least, here's the Swift with a younger, heftier sibling (Xtrakit Scimitar). The wide-angle lens distorts the perspective, the Scimitar is at least 30% larger!

The latest Airfix release is now in stock. It is the A11005 Avro Shackleton AEW.2 with markings options for two 8 Squadron aircraft named after characters from the "Magic Roundabout" TV series, WR960 "Dougal" and WR963 "Ermintrude". Order now at our bargain online price.

Have just finished this one from Airfix new range of very nice kits, build out of the box one with aftermarked decals from OWL. cheers Jes
