I’ve been looking forward to this group build. My entry will be AFV Club’s 1/35 M5A1 and I will be doing it as a 4th Marine tank at Kwajalein, more specifically, during the battle for Roi-Namur. Not pictured are some Tiger Model Designs goodies I have to dig out of somewhere. A combination of the kit decals and Star Decals will be used to depict “Hothead” from Company B, 4th Marine Tank Battalion. During the Battle For Kwajalein, the heaviest action took place on the islands of Roi-Namur (connected by a causeway). Because they figured to be the most heavily defended in the atoll, the task of clearing them went to the Marines. Roi was home to a large airfield while Namur had the support buildings. Intelligence figured the airfield would be more heavily defended, so M4A2 Shermans were sent ashore there while the M5A1 Stuarts, which were quickly falling out of favor with the USMC, went ashore at Namur for what figured to be little more than mop up duty. Unfortunately the opposite happened. The Shermans raced across Roi with very little resistance while the main fighting greeted the troops who went ashore at Namur. The four Company B tanks (Hothead, Hunter, Hornet and Heater) did their best to help, but some never made it off the beach after falling into shell holes. Furthermore, during the first day of fighting, they lost their commanding officer. Capt James Denig in Hunter was advancing across the island when his tank got caught up on a tree stump. Half a dozen Japanese soldiers then used this opportunity to swarm the small tank. A nearby marine left cover and emptied his BAR at the soldiers, cutting down five in one blow, but in the short time it took to reload, the sixth enemy soldier was able to climb on top of the tank and drop a grenade in the signal port. The marines rushed to the aid of the crewmen, but the grenade fatally wounded Denig and the driver. Roi-Namur was secured the next day but it had come at a cost and further proved to the Marines that the Stuart was no longer a front line vehicle….by the summer of 1944, all Stuarts in their inventory had been replaced with M4A2s. Capt Denig’s burnt out Stuart.

This is the 1/700-scale AFV Club Knox-class frigate with Five Star Knox PE add-on set. Other aftermarket details include Five Star whip antennas and SSModel Phalanx CIWS. I used SSModel 0.05mm memory metal for the rigging, having learned that the elastic Infini Aero rigging I used on my last build makes getting the right amount of slack in the lines difficult. Painted with Vallejo, weathered gently with Tamiya enamel panel liner and some oils on the hull. Overall, the AFV Club kit suffered from a couple inaccuracies and didn't always have the best fit. Decals often were not sized correctly and didn't include flags or helpful things like helopad markings (which, incidentally, are molded onto the plastic and I was able to bring out by painting the surface and lightly sanding the paint off the raised lines, revealing the light gray, albeit not white, plastic beneath). The Five Star kit is lovely, but is also missing some obvious adornments, like the goodies that line the mast. Still, it all comes together in the end.

Going to be bold and throw up another build for this GB (Like I said- I've been looking forward to this one for months). I've wanted to have a crack at the AFV Club F-5 since I started the hobby and I can't see a better time to pull the trigger than now! It's the Peace Bell Program boxing but does include 2 ROCAF schemes, still undecided on whether to do the grey scheme or SEA camouflage. I have the Quinta 3D decals on the way from Hannants as well as canopy masks by Eduard. Very much looking forward to ticking off a bucketlist build! Thanks for looking in!

Well, I signed up for this one before it made it through so I had better at least try! I've been itching to get started on this for a good few months now so let's see if life can keep out of the way and I may actually complete something... I bought this kit a long time ago, when it was arguably the best on the market, initially to put it on a SSYMS flatcar (I have one from Ironside, again bought a very long time ago) but I've decided I like the look of the late June-July 1944 camo applied to s.SS-Pz.Abt.102 Tigers making their way to Normandy. There are some nice inspirational photos taken while they were on the road march which will hopefully spur me on. Anyway, the obligatory box, kit and accessories shot. I bought Eduard's photoetch set designed for the Tamiya Late Tiger I kit for the fenders, skirts, exhaust shrouds and tool clamps, completely forgetting I already have AllianceModelWorks lovely workable tool clamp set. As it stands I'll use AFV Club's late Tiger workable tracks (I have thier transport tracks too). I think the only item I have left to get is some epoxy putty for the dreaded zimmerit. All the best, Si

Hello everyone! Here is my latest kit finished a week ago. It's Sikorsky CHSS-2 Sea King "05", s/n 4005 of HS 50, Royal Canadian Navy, on HMCS Bonaventure, in 1965. It is AFV Club's 1:144 kit built OOB with corrections and some details added. This is a nice kit with several options (rear sliding door in any position, rotors an tail folded for storage, search radar and spray shield) but is a bit disappointing in the lack of detail in the rear cabin for example. The box comes with two full kits and four decal options of which that of the Canadian Navy really stood out. Unfortunately, although described as being for a 1965 option on the HCMS Bonaventure, the decals, scheme and the options added (radar and shield) are based on the machine when it was repainted in the old scheme in 2010 for the centennial of the Canadian Navy and with several errors too! Canada received 41 CHSS-2 (later CH-124) Sea Kings of which the first 4 were built by Sikorsky and the remaining 37 were assembled by United Aircraft of Canada (now Pratt & Whitney Canada), in Longueuil, Quebec (just across the river from Montreal). 4005 was the first one assembled there in 1964 and survived up to the retirement of the type in 2018, going through all the upgrades and is now on display at the National Air Force Museum of Canada (NAFMC) at CFB Trenton. I intended to represent the type as suggested by AFV Club on the HMCS Bonaventure which required few additions from stretched sprue, ignoring the radar and shield and adding some flags for the sponsons (sourced from a Mark I H-34 kit). Unfortunately, I couldn't find a replacement for the insignia since those of the kit are for the later type (less-detailed maple leaf). Some errors in the instructions concerning the scheme and the colours were corrected thanks to research and photos of the type in the 1960s. The kit was fully painted and varnished with brush. For more information on the build see my WIP at the Kampfgruppe144 forum: http://www.kampfgruppe144.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=82&t=9016 Thanks for looking and, as always, all comments are welcome. This was my project for the Vietnam II GB over in the Group Build section. Kit: 1/35 AFV Club Extras: AFV Club track links - kindly supplied by snapper_city Pegasus Camouflage netting Academy Allied and German Tank Supplies Set II AFV Club 20Pdr. Gun Ammo Paints: Humbrol and Revell Acrylics - Humbrol Spray can for the base colour - all other paints applied by hairy sticks. This was my first proper 1/35 AFV build - I practiced first on the old Tamiya Panzer Kampfwagen II Ausf.F/G kit in the Achtung Panzer GB earlier in the year. The WIP for this build can be found here. There are quite a few photos. In Country; Some close-ups: So thats my last completion for 2015. Roll on 2016s builds! I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to this and all my other builds during the year - as Ive said before; none of them would be what they are without the advice, suggestions and support of fellow Britmodellers. Thank you. Happy New Year! Kind regards, Stix

'No Petrol - No Hope' - Towards the end of WWII German troops suffered almost as much from lack of fuel and ammo as from damage from allied troops. This resulted in crews destroying their own vehicles, despite being perfectly serviceable. This diorama is meant to show just that, as a Sturmtiger arrives at what they hope would be a fuel depot, only to find it abandoned and empty, destroying any hope of continuing with their tank. The Sturmtiger is from AFV Club, figures are all Tamiya (some with Hornet heads and swapped arms) and cobbled street part of base a leftover from a Miniart building. Crater filled with resin and oil paint. The rest painted using a variety of acrylics and AK Crusted Rust set for barrels etc. All comments welcome

Pretty much finished apart from some minor weathering once in place on the diorama. This is the AFV Club Sturmtiger built OOB except for Atak resin zimerit and non standard (Dragon?) vinyl tracks, as it came from ebay with these in the box. Easy build and fits well together but no interior except for gun breach. The 'turret is not attached to the chassis but will be once the base is done (hence the small gap in the first picture) Airbrush painted freehand with Tamiya acrylics and AK + MIG weathering products. It will eventually be part of a larger diorama.

So, having completed the Filthy Landrover and Dirty Sherman, I'm about to start on my next learning journey build, the AFV Club FV107 Scimitar. This is also a first venture into the brand, which looking at builds here, should be OK. Taking the learning from the previous two, I've decided to go basic ...... no damage, no thick application of mud (despite the recent delivery of some Ammo mud effects stuff) and no aerials made from wire. As it's based on a vehicle used in the desert, I've done a bit of research (unlike the last time!) and; by the looks of it, the desert colour was applied over the standard green, although if anyone knows different, I'll happily take some guidance. Based on this, my plan is to go NATO green, apply chipping fluid in the areas that seem to get most wear and then apply the desert colour so I can work on getting that 'scrubbed' look, but without going overboard. A appears to be tradition, I've pictured the sprues ..... they look crisp and not too much flash. There are a lot ejector pin marks, but none that I can see will need attention at the moment. Make yourself a brew, pull up a chair ...... here goes!! 20230127_213345 by Ran Domstuff, on Flickr 20230127_213647 by Ran Domstuff, on Flickr 20230127_213659 by Ran Domstuff, on Flickr 20230127_213726 by Ran Domstuff, on Flickr Thanks for looking Keith 😁

This is the very nice AFV Club kit in 1/350. It looks to be a simply build, but the addition of photo etch means taking your time with this will give you a nice result. I managed to get most of the photo etch on and the fit of the parts is very nice. I used some EZ line for the rigging and various chalks and pastels for the weathering. Now I need to get an I-400 to sit next to her.

There is, or was, an image on the web of a Guards Division Stummel about to cross a bridge over the Rhine (I think). This particular Stummel belonged to the Leicestershire Yeomanry, a Royal Artillery regiment, equipped with Sexton SPGs. They acquired the vehicle following the destruction of German armoured units at St Vith. It was still present with the regiment for the division's end of war parade. This build will be of that Stummel. The kit: Extras: Decals, paint, and tracks. The decals may supply stars, the blue on the unit markings is way too light. So far as I can tell, the half-track was towing a British 10 cwt trailer with metal sides and mud-guards. The nearest trailer kit I can find is this Bronco trailer, which lacks mud-guards. The Bronco trailer: The extras in the Bronco kit will also be raided for a radio and, maybe, other British kit.

Hi Everyone, Not been around for a while so much going on, still not fully finished the Tortoise but started the Carpet Layer, was going to post a WiP, kind of lost the mojo a bit though, started to find the kit a bit tedious - me just not in right place ? have found some of the parts ridiculously small especially some of the parts that are for the wading stacks the small parts that the hooks from the turnbuckles go into needed opening up to get the hooks into, ended up losing all bar one lol , the part that makes the release cables was too short and badly twisted, so much for the instructions saying trim too size carefully used very thin steel wire to replace it not brilliant but, Is it just me that thinks some of the parts are unnecessarily small and could have been moulded in situ? binned the balsa strips and have kept for other uses and used Albion Alloys steel tube for the carpet so that looks better. Anyon else found issues to be aware of for the future, got 5 more AFV Club Churchills to build in various guises, one thing I did not struggle with was the suspension funnily enough, quite a lot of resistance in spring tension so have cut a few down to allow some give for whatever base I end up putting it on. Cheers Mark

Hi all, Seeing as I'm co-hosting its about time I started up a thread for my entry into the GB. Like quite a few others here I shall be using the AFV Club 1/48 F-5E as the basis for my build and other than aftermarket decals and a resin seat I shall be building it OOTB. My choice of subject is one that I have been wanting to do for a while, an aggressor from the 527th TFTAS based at RAF Alconbury. I am of an age that I have very clear memories of these at various air shows in the UK, including Alconbury itself, and was fascinated by the various exotic schemes the aircraft wore. I was even lucky enough to see a couple of them plying their trade in a mock dogfight with a couple of RAF Phantoms, no guesses as to who had the tighter circles! Enough of my prattle here are the usual box and contents pictures; Quite nice box art, though sadly not from the 527th. The contents still mostly sealed in their bags except for the cockpit which has been given some paint. The decals by Two Bobs that I shall be using, there are 5 options on the sheet, two in slightly different multi coloured camo and the other 3 in an all over grey scheme. And the one I shall be building is the one in the middle in the picture above, bort number red 53 in the snake scheme, a classic scheme for the ALconbury aggressors. The only problem I have with these is that I want to build all the different schemes used and with the cost of these kits thats not financially viable! Really looking forward to getting started on this one. Craig.

Hello all, Here is my entry for this GB - AFV Clubs 1/48 F-5E 'Mig-28' which will be marked as a machine from VFC-13 'Fighting Saints' based out of NAS Fallon, Nevada. The squadron has flown the F-5 since 1996 but will transition to ex USAF F-16s towards the end of the year, with the F-5s being transferred to VFA-204, another adversary squadron which operates out of New Orleans. This will form part of my Top Gun/Adversary project alongside an F-14, A-4 and F/A-18E. Kit: Extras: I'll be using a Quickboost resin seat, Eduard mask and DEF models FOD inserts. Will be loaded up with a dummy AIM-9 and ACMI pod. Scheme: Should hopefully end up something like this! Cheers Dave

My son bought me this kit for Christmas: Completed out of the box as “Dido” , C Squadron, 4 RTR in Berlin in the early 1960s. Rather unusual in being painted olive drab, with the mantlet cover painted black. While looking for images and information I found this rather nice bit of newsreel: https://www.britishpathe.com/video/VLVA807GJXZU80R6MMI89H8J3QVSD-GERMANY-BRITISH-ARMOURED-EXERCISE-IN-WEST-BERLIN/query/CENTURION Brush painted with Tamiya acrylics, build thread can be found here. Quite a challenging kit for me, rather more complex than the Tamiya AFV kits I have built previously, but very enjoyable. Back to work next week! Thanks for looking. Looks rather good on the shelf with the Comet and Centaur I built at the beginning of last year.

We are having a bit of a heat wave here in Perth in Western Australia, so just too hot to do any work on my almost complete Airfix M3 Grant. Thought I would make a start taking a look at my Christmas present from my son. It’s a re-boxing of the previously released Mk 5, an overview of which can be found here: https://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/afv/kit_afv_35122.shtml However there are slight modifications. There is no turned aluminium main gun, but there is the mantlet cover, in a soft vinyl type plastic. Another difference is that the road wheels are provided in hard polystyrene and vinyl. I know which ones I’ll be using- the hard ones. Much easier to handle. At the bottom of the box is a rather nice print of the tank on the box top. The included tracks are vinyl, however while visiting the local shop for their Boxing Day sale I picked up these quick assembly link and length tracks. They appear to be a very new release (the box lid says 2021, and I can’t find any online reviews). They look rather nice, hopefully they will be straightforward to use. The kit has several different options from C Squadron, 4 RTR stationed in Berlin in 1960 to 1963 (about the time my Dad was first serving in Germany). The instructions are very specific that the overall colour was olive drab, which surprised me as I assumed it would be deep bronze green. A bit of searching around and I found a few mentions that they were painted OD, with the mantlet cover being painted black. The few photos I could find seemed to confirm this. This is going to be an interesting challenge!

G'day All, It's been quite a while since I've had anything to contribute here (or to modelling in general to be honest), but I have finally finished a kit! This is the 1/48 AFV Club RF-5E kit done using markings from an IsraDecal sheet to depict an all-black Royal Saudi Air Force machine. The kit is basically out of the box but I have added a Master pitot probe, scratch-built refueling probe (the boxing I had didn't include the probe) and replaced the sidewinders with ones from a Hasegawa weapons set. There are a few issues around the markings as I had to cobble together various stencils and guess a lot, so it's more of a representation than a replica, but at least it's finished! Externally, it's painted using Mr Colour and Gaia lacquers which worked very nicely. The metal area at the rear is with SMS paints, a local, Australian brand, which looks very nice too. The base black is very slightly lightened with pure black over the top to depict a bit of weathering, then a matte varnish and clear black (also called "smoke" when Tamiya does it) for further effect. The model does have more tonal variations in real life but it doesn't seem to show up well here. The ladder comes with the kit, the figure is from an old Hasegawa Strike Eagle kit (cleaned up and refined) and the helmet and mask are made by hollowing out a Hasegawa pilot's head. These were added just for a bit of fun and are intended to just be used as generic props. If you've got any questions, please feel free to ask. It's good to be able to contribute something again.. Thanks for looking, Cheers, Motty.

While waiting for the Thunderbird 4 filler and paint to dry, I've started looking at what next to build and fso the time has finally come... Ever since doing the Bar-armoured Scimitar back in 2012, I've been planning to have a go at doing one of the new Scimitar 2s. On the face of it this should be relatively easy, after all its "only" a Scimitar turret on top of a Spartan hull isn't it? Bar armour? pah no problem! (hahahaha!) This is what I mean: (Image sourced from http://plain-military.proboards.com/thread/4962/qrl-sqn-cvr-mk-2 with thanks) So let us begin by working out what we will need to build it. So: Scimitar Turret - not a problem, got several AFV Club Scimitar kits in the stash. Spartan Hull - okay bit trickier, but Accurate Armour do a Spartan resin kit. Problem here is its an old-style hull which will need updating. Bar armour - well I scratch built the bar armour 2 years ago, I could do it again. However Accurate Srmour also have a PE bar armour set of the Warrior, so it might be worth seeing what can be done with it. Tracks? No problem got several sets of early and late Fruilmodel tracks in the stash which are great fun to put together (ahem!) Right to this is the stuff to begin with: Now the reason you see a Spartan AND Samson Accurate Armour kits is that I also intend at some point to build one of the new build bar-armoured Samson recovery vehicles. Now with these, the commander's cupola has migrated from the middle on the old hulls to the left side as on the Spartan, so I'm performing some drastic surgery on the hulls by cutting them both in half and using the Samson front with the Scimitar rear for the Scimitar 2 and the Scimitar front and Samson back on the Samson 2 at some point in the future. Yes I know how mad that sounds, but it seemed like a good idea at the time! Oh and just because there appears to be a lot of expensive Accurate Armour kits, they've all been acquired over the last 2 years so I'm not made of money Opening the boxes and we end up with this lot of components: Left and top, AFV Club Scimitar bits, Middle top, Accurate ARmour Spartan kit Right Top, bar armour plan from my own fair hand! Middle, Scimitar/Scorpion Photoetch leftovers from previous Scorpion and Scimitar builds and some resin pieces from Castoff Armour left over from the LEP Scimitar build, to provide the extra armour panels. Bottom right, Accurate Armour Warrior PE bar armour set. In addition, there will be a plethora of plastic card, stowage accessories from Castoff, Accurate Armour and other sources. Finally in this introductory post is the bar armour schematic I've created, having studied a lot of the photos in the Plain Military board thread linked to above. This has benefited from my previous research efforts while building the bar armoured Scimitar and research into the Samson build. So thats the intro, now to go and actually DO something about it! Watch this space...

I'm going to park this thread here for the start of the GB. Here's the kit I'll be building: I was planning to just do a straight OOB build, though seems the kit is missing the tracks, so gah I'll need to find some replacements! Seems like a nice little kit, not an insane amount of bits and comes with a metal barrel for the cannon (handy as plastic that thin would be bound to break), a small PE fret, all the sprues being individually packed (apart from the duplicate sprues for the wheels)... Instructions seem - erm interesting, I was scratching my head over this one on the bottom left, involving a screwdriver and some needle nose pliers - I think though after some thought its about bending some PE... I'm sure it'll make sense when I get around to building it. Looks like the kit is a modification of AFV Club's Scorpion kit - which makes sense since in real-life the vehicles share the same chassis. Obviously planning to do it in the Gulf War scheme as depicted on the box art.

Hi ! I had promised you informations on my friend Basket... I take advantage of the opening of this topic to keep my word This dear friend lives therefore a small mediterranean village called Marseille. Rémy (his real name) is indeed a true anglophile, but of an anglophilia which makes useless the existence of the worst anglophobes. Let me explain 🤓 This excellent friend draws most of his knowledge of England from the repeated vision of "Little Britain" and has identified himself surprisingly with Miss Howard (the Emily Howard her/himself), a curious and unique case of pathological bovarianism (this partly explaining its acute suceptibility). So he scrupulously adapted his lifestyle to his favorite character... The true problem is that, despite a much sought after outfit, his appearance is closer to that of a trans rugby player than that of a victorian lady and anyone who has suffered the spectacle of the dear Rémy bicycling down the narrow main street of his village (the Cannebière), screaming hysterically in a high-pitched voice “I am an English lady, yes, a real lady” will understand what I am talking about... But let get back to modelling with one of my last build, a M113 ACAV from AFV Club. The figurines are from Bravo6 and the water-buffalo from Mininature. The kit is a gem and an excellent base for detailling. I’ve scratched some internal details which remain visible when closed (so it’s not an exhaustive redetailling of the interior). The project and work in progress The pics below will show you stuffs i added on the interior. AFV done And the final result Complete buid here : http://fighters.forumactif.com/t94091-gb-vietnam-buffaloes-encounter-m113-acav-1st-squadron-10th-cavalry-4th-inf-division See you! Since going to the movie theatre is not possible at the moment, I am bringing the movies to my modelling . After month working on my other movie build longterm project (Millenium Falcon) , it is time to start 2021 Movie Build 1, and 1st model of the year - the AFV Club F-5E all dressed up as the Mig-28 from Top Gun Lights , Camera , Scalpel & Glue at the ready , it will be building her OOB so nothing fancy to see here. I am hoping a WIP thread will make be build her is a sensible time ie (not finishing in 2024)
