  1. A bit of a departure from my normal subject.. a More modern 'jet' though this is strictly speaking a Turbofan engined bird! It was the kit that got me back in to modelling which I started nearly 2 years ago.. on the ordnance load. I got side tracked in to my real love and interest WW2 planes... its a very well thought out kit in my opinion. The engines and the wings marry up nicely with the fuselage.i decided I'd like to depart from the serving suggestion of a cammo model pattern and go for a Grey scheme. I've not decided which decal set to use yet but I'm not that bothered about historical accuracy for this project. I just wanted to enjoy the build and experiment with something new.. that doesn't have a propellor! I got some AK Real Colours US Modern Aircraft Greys paint set and so far I've sprayed Grey Vallejo Primer and then the Dark Ghost Grey sections. I did think I could just use Primer and maybe mix my own Dark Ghost Grey but a little research encouraged me to splash out on the rather excellent AK set. The model is surprisingly large for 1:48 scale. I think this is my perception as I've been engaged doing smaller WW2 planes so much ! I've enjoyed the kit so far . I made some mistakes on the painting of the ordnance load I know.. apologies in advance .. but I'm finding the masking tasks a bit too much so I'll make it look mean and ready for a fight rather than accurate.. Any advice on weathering , especially the turbo fan exhaust patterns/ colours would be gratefully received! Also I'm guessing that the overall General weathering would be very restrained for this type of aircraft? I'm thinking non combat situations allow more time for cleaning aircraft and maintaining them ? I've always liked the Warthog. It looks like it means business! Here's a shot of the progress so far...Regards, Andy
  2. My son found this languishing in the back of a drawer. It was constructed, of sorts, but painting had not been started and the decal sheet was lost. I re-glued the seams and painted it in a scheme from the Print Scale 144-011 decal sheet. I have not built a combat aircraft in 1/144 before, and I don't think that I will again. Too fiddly for my big fingers and aging eyesight. Only four pics. The colours have not reproduced very well in the images. Thanks for looking. Graeme
  3. Recently built OOB except for the PJ Productions pilot, this was a very inexpensive (£9) Academy kit that was a joy to build and definitely didn't feel like a budget kit at all. Painted with Ammo MiG USAF grey colour set and mounted on a piece of scrap kitchen worktop oak. The 'Runway' is a piece of 2000 grade wet and dry paper sprayed with a few white lines for effect.
  4. Hello All, My first ever Armour WIP! I attempted and failed to build and finish the Milicast A10 Cruiser for the BM 10 year GB here. Yesterday I had built the tank and got to an even green finish. Today I learned how brittle resin is, rebuilt the gun from Albion Alloys nested brass tube, painted the dark green blotches and weathered it a little: I still need to paint the tyres, tracks and details, add some markings and then weather it some more. Thanks for looking, Adrian
  5. Im in with a Lizard A10A from Tamiya in 1/48. This is an old kit, with raised panel lines and unrealistic armament - I will look for references, raid the spares and other kits for appropriate weaponry... As you can see, I bought this 'partially started' from Evil Bay - can I ask Mods for the to confirm its wellunder the 25% mark - I will need to start again anyways.. I have some aftermarket decals from XtraDecals to build an A10A based out of RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge - these were always seen around East Anglia growing up in the early 80's in their cool lizard scheme. I often went to Bentwaters as a youngster before joining the Army in 1985, as my dad had a friend serving in the USAFE based there so loads of memories.... Funny thing, 21 years later A10C's saved my and some colleagues bottoms a few times in Helmand (along with GR7/9s !) and they are still going strong - formidable weapon with that great sound when it fires over you.....Brrrrrrp..... Brrrrrt.... More Brrrrt... Low level fun from the titanium bathtub!
  6. RA1 Watchkeeper ASTOR/AEW As austerity starts to bite, the Royal Air Force realise that it would be advantageous to combine roles and retire both the E3 and Sentinel aircraft. Their replacement - the Watchkeeper. This aircraft is equipped with synthetic apperture radar, airborne surveillance radar and an advanced optics suite. It is flown by a crew of 6: 2 pilots, 1 mission commander (and optical systems operator), battlefield radar mapping officer, airborne radar operator, and signals intel/electronic warfare officer. The crew are seated in comfort in "assisted exit" seats and the aircraft has an endurance of up to 14 hours before refuelling (or 20 with ferry pods attached) and a cruising speed of 300kts. It is capable of carrying stores on external hardpoints including fuel, electronic warfare pods, or - for targets of opportunity, a small number of offensive stores including bombs and missiles. The aircraft features a large moving map and a multiple integrated sensor suite - allowing the mission commander to make real time decisions on the battlefield. This is a fully integrated and multi capable ISTAR asset, using the latest computing and radar technology - truly a leap forward. The aircraft is expected to make its first flight late in 2013... Pictures of the prototype below.... Needless to say - this is really a spares box raider!!! Lots of filler, lots of bits and bobs and a bit of experimentation. I've tried to be as realistic as possible - still, for example, have to sort some cooling intakes for the radar systems.. Quite a bit of filling and sanding still to do, and quite a few aerials still to add (similar to those on top of the P8 Poseidon). I've scribed a door behind the seats in the cockpit, and there are 4 remaining glazed windows for the crew. Unfortunately, I managed to sand across one of them - any advice on how to make it right again happily received!!! It will be painted in a similar scheme to the RAF Sentinel, though I haven't decided what stores I'm going to place under the wings yet. It will use an F111 front gear, with a modified DO228 rear undercarriage with double wheels. Hope to finish this soon, but with 2 young children, a wife, and a busy real life flying schedule - watch this space.....!! Any comments, criticisms, and advice will be most welcome!
