  1. A-7D, s/n 71-0339, was a support jet with the 6512th Test Squadron, 6510th Test Wing, Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB. It was primarily used as a systems trainer for the USAF Test Pilot School (TPS) and as a support aircraft for other aircraft test flights, usually F-15s or F-16s. '339 was transferred from the 107th Tac Fighter Squadron, Michigan Air National Guard in early 1989. Ready to serve as a radar target with ALQ-188 ECM pods, October 1989 April 1990 September 1990 Thanks for looking, Sven
  2. Hi Everyone, It's been a long time, and I am impressed and enthused by everyones participation in this group build already. That said my entry thus far is the Matchbox A-7D Corsair II kit. Back in the day I never built this one myself, although my dad did so I saw/played with it up close way back when. I've only just started it overnight, although I did remove the parts from the sprues some time ago, and have consequently misplaced the little man in the cockpit, yet fortunately for this build a somewhat blue chap who normally sits in a 2 seat Hunter has offered to stand in. As to my progress, well so far all I've got through is having finished cleaning up one fuselage half, the seat, fuel receptacle thingimy-jig and the tail pipe. While I've started cleaning up the intake parts as well. My plans are to paint it all, to hide our man blue. Plus finish it with all of the bombs, drop tanks, missiles, with wheels down and fitted on the stand as well. If I knew where the real A-7 driver was hiding I would build it without painting it. Yet I am just as happy to colour it in with paints as well. Of which the following pictures show the box, instructions and the parts I haven't worked on yet. Anyway cheers, and I hope you have all been well along the way since I was last here. Daniel.
  3. Hello! This is my recent project, a nice kit of this iconic jet. It’s an old toll, and it shows it in some ways, but it also can be built into a nice model . Except fot the canopy masks, everything OOB. All my references showed these USAF birds, in the late eighties and early nineties were kept relatively clean, being the opposite of the Navy. So, the weathering was kept to a minimum. All decals were fine. Gunze paints and oils were used. Hope you enjoy. Cheers!
  4. Hello everyone, at the end of the year, the work on the completion of the started projects is accelerating. Aside from the Hobby Boss standing in my stash as ultimate mold for A7 in 1/72, I couldn’t help myself, and must finish (if nothing else the one for sentimental reasons) this “old man”. With all the "inaccuracies" and sometimes poor fit, this is one of my favorite ESCI / Italeri molds. Additionally some details added in cockpit, resin pilot seat..etc, and more complicated task to make full length intake from the polystyrene sheet, it turned out a little awkward, but still better than it was without any opening. I didn't want to put the lid on. AK colors, as well as wash. What I failed to fit as i wanted are the cockpit transparent parts ... but can live with that. In the end I am satisfied, I hope you will like it too. Greetings until the next finished model
  5. A-7Ds of the 174th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 185th Tactical Fighter Group, Iowa Air National Guard out of Sioux Gateway Airport. At Nellis AFB for Green Flag 81-3, April 1981. 69-6210 69-6235 70-0937 72-0182 75-0405 75-0407 Thanks for looking, Sven
  6. Some shots of A-7D 69-6217 of the 6512th Test Squadron, 6510th Test Wing, Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards AFB, during a radar target mission in June 1992. The SLUFF was acting as a target and threat simulator for an F-16D radar test. Most of the mission was the two aircraft lining up at opposite ends of the test range - an area called Cords Road - and then flying towards each other at various speeds and altitudes. The A-7 would execute various briefed maneuvers or radiate ECM threat simulations. Typically the aircraft would merge and then fly through to the opposite ends of the area again - sort of like jousting - then repeat for as many events as the mission required. Sitting on the runway for takeoff. The A-7 would take off first fly the runway circuit and call the F-16 to take off such that they joined up immediately after the F-16 takeoff. This was to allow the A-7 to inspect the F-16 for any leaking fluids, open panels, landing gear completely up, etc. Once the A-7 called "Clean and dry" the two would separate to the ends of the test area and begin the radar jousting. After the radar testing we rejoined for some formation work while returning to base. the pod on the right wing is an ALQ-167 variant. I think it was referred to as the Bullwinkle pod. The pod under the left wing is an ALQ-188. Both the -167 and -188 are used for threat simulations. Thanks for looking, Sven
  7. SLUFFs of the 125th Tac Fighter Squadron, 138th Tac Fighter Group, Oklahoma ANG out of the Tulsa International Airport. At Nellis AFB for Red Flag 81-2, February 1981. 69-6229 70-0976 70-1028 70-1039 71-0297 Thanks for looking, Sven
  8. YA-7D s/n 67-14584 operated by the USAF Test Pilot School, 6510th Test Wing, Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards AFB. October 1984 May 1985 The trapezoid markings on top of the wing are for optical tracking during TPS spin training/evaluation missions, making it easier to determine the aircraft attitude with ground-based optical trackers and cameras. TPS would spin the A-7 both upright and inverted. November 1991 September 1992 Like her sisters, she was retired to AMARG in September 1992 Thanks for looking, Sven
  9. A-7Ds of the 166th Tac Fighter Squadron, 121st Tac Fighter Wing, Ohio Air National Guard out of Rickenbacker AFB. Gunsmoke '83, Nellis AFB, November 1983. 70-0965 71-0347 71-0360 72-0260 Thanks for looking, Sven
  10. Hello everybody... Fresh from the Sharkmouths Group-build i present to you my A-7D. It is in the markings of the 354th TFW. Stationed at Korat RTAFB June 1973. The mouth and eyes are hand painted as i could not source any decals for the project. I have added a link to the WIP log. Please feel free ask questions, comment, or give your thoughts. Dennis
  11. A-7Ds of the 188th Tac Fighter Squadron, New Mexico Air National Guard, out of Tucson IAP. On the transient ramp at Luke AFB. 72-0225 72-0238 72-0256 Thanks for looking, Sven
  12. The first YA-7D, 67-14582. Operated by the 6512th Test Squadron and the USAF Test Pilot School, 6510th Test Wing, Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards AFB. Was always fitted with the YAPS (yaw and pitch sensor) nose boom. One of the few YA-7Ds to have the refueling probe removed and the refueling boom receptacle installed atop the fuselage to evaluate this configuration and receiver qualification with the KC-135. March 1981 October 1983, Edwards AFB Open House. October 1989. Changed to white and red scheme some time between 1985 and 1988. September 1992. AF Systems Command and AF Logistics Command were merged in June 1992 to form AF Materiel Command, hence the change in tail badge. She was retired to AMARG in September 1992. Thanks for looking, Sven
  13. YA-7D, s/n 69-6191, was a support jet with the 6512th Test Squadron, 6510th Test Wing, Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB. It was primarily used as a trainer for the USAF Test Pilot School (TPS) and as a support aircraft for other aircraft test flights, usually F-15s or F-16s. March 1981. Most of the YA-7Ds retained the US Navy probe and drogue refueling probe and were never fitted with the flying boom receptacle. July 1984. The "ED" tail codes were added to most 6510th Test Wing Aircraft in 1983 May 1985 with SUU-20 practice bomb suspension units. When the A-7s were used as target/threat aircraft for F-15 or F-16 radar testing, ALQ-131 or ALQ-188 ECM pods would be carried on the mid-wing stations. The trapezoid markings on top of the wing are for optical tracking during TPS spin training/evaluation missions, making it easier to determine the aircraft attitude with ground-based optical trackers and cameras. TPS would spin the A-7 both upright and inverted. January 1989. I had left Edwards for a posting in London in 1985. When I returned to Edwards in 1988, all of the F-4s and A-7s were in white with red visibility markings. Just as well that all the flight test A-10s left Edwards in the Summer of 1985. White and red Warthogs would be just plain wrong. Thanks for looking, Sven
  14. Hello all... Well heres my entry for this build, the venerable Fujimi 1/72 A-7D. I’ve built A-7’s before but i’ve never built one of these Fujimi kits before. They look great from what i can see, and have been chomping at the bit to start it. Here are the obligatory sprue shots. Markings will be S.E.A. Camouflage and either 23rd FIG (Flying Tigers) from England AFB La. Or the 354th out of Korat RTAFB 1972. See everyone next week. Dennis
  15. I had originally posted some images of A-7D 69-6217 of the 6512th Test Squadron at Edwards AFB back in July 2018. I've since found a few more slides... August 1984 In the lead with 69-6194 July 1989 Thanks for looking, Sven
  16. A-7D 69-6194, operated by the 6512th Test Squadron, 6510th Test Wing, Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards AFB, October 1984. Headed toward the Superior Valley weapons range with a single SUU-20 loaded with six BDU-33 practice bombs. Store separation cameras are mounted on the intake, left wing tip and the aft fuselage to record the BDU-33 releases. Name beneath the windscreen is Maj Gen Peet Odgers, the AFFTC commander. Lined up on Runway Departing Edwards pattern Doing our all-around visual inspection to confirm "Clean and dry" Dropping singles Looks like one BDU-33 doesn't want to go Confirming a "hung" bomb Returning to base (RTB) with one BDU-33. Thanks for looking, Sven
  17. Finished the 1/72 Fujimi A-7D kit, circa 1973, from England AFB, LA, using an aftermarket cockpit set and decals scrounged from the spares box. Build thread is here for those interested: A-7D Build It was a great kit and fun to build. Thanks for looking, Ed
  18. Hi, Didn't think I.d be able to start a new build before next years, but the modeling gods have smiled upon me! Therefore, I shall begin a model that I've badly wanted to do for a long time. The model I want to build is this one, rather poorly photographed sometime in '72 or '73 at MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL. Wish I'd had better photo-taking skills in those days!!! The reason for this build is that I wanted to replicate an old model I'd built, in around '73-'74, using IIRC the old Airfix kit of that era. I sold off this and many other models during a divorce, and I have missed it ever since. It was one of the very best I'd built in that long-ago time... A copy of a very badly-taken Polaroid photo is shown below: While that old Airfix kit is still not bad, it suffers from pretty much no cockpit detail, etc. I shall use a later kit this time, the (also by now old) Fujimi kit, which also depicts a 23rd TFW aircraft, albeit from the 74th TFS, and it features the wrap-around camo circa 1980, and a tail band with stars, which my model precedes. Luckily, a deep spares box will help out with the correct markings. I will also use an aftermarket A-7D cockpit set, I think from Aires: Since I wanted to shows the pilot ladder deployed, I'll begin there first drilling, then filing out the openings in the left fuse half, as well as the lower nose piece: Since this will be complicated by the intake duct work, I had to fill the backside of the holes ith the thinnest tape I could find, in this case two-sided: I will ran some thin CA cement over the tape to toughen it up a little, but it will eventually be just primed and painted white, inside and out. Because of the aftermarket cockpit set, a lot of cutting and sanding was required to get the 'pit to fit the model: "A" shows the original cockpit look, "B" shows where the fuse halves are cut away (both sides, and various protruding items are sanded off, while "C" shows how much material needed to be sanded off the cockpit tub. I quit when I started sanding through on the sides! Next the two lower nose pieces were glued together, and when dry primed with Mr. Surfacer 500 to remove the join seam and overlap the tape (not shown here): On the right above, after gluing the fuse sides together around the aftermarket cockpit, some gap was left on the bottom of the nose, despite clamping. This gets filled with glued-in scrap plastic sheet: When dry, this will be trimmed with a #11 blade and then sanded smooth, the filled in need be. While that's drying, it's time to take a break. See you later when I resume the build. Ed
  19. A-7D, s/n 69-6217, was a support jet with the 6512th Test Squadron at Edwards AFB. It was primarily used as a trainer for the USAF Test Pilot School (TPS) and as a support aircraft for other aircraft test flights, usually F-15s or F-16s. October 1983, loaded up for an open house static display August 1984 safety chase proficiency mission. I'm in the RCP of an F-4. During the mission we trade off providing chase coverage for each other. July 1989 during a weapons delivery proficiency mission. The trapezoid markings on top of the wing are for optical tracking during TPS spin training/evaluation missions, making it easier to identify the top of the aircraft with ground-based cameras. TPS would spin the A-7 both upright and inverted. On the run-in to the target Just released a BDU-33 practice bomb January 1989 September 1992 - all will be gone in 1993 Thanks for looking, Sven
  20. In early 1981, A-7Ds started showing up on the 57th Fighter Weapons Wing ramp next to the 422nd Fighter Weapons Squadron parking lines. These jets were unusual in that they carried no identifying unit markings and their presentation of the USAF serial numbers on the vertical tail were in very small numbers. A few of us with access to the 422 and weapons school lines caught the first few jets on film in the first week that they were there. Then someone realized that too many people had access to the jets and that area of the ramp got its own security identifier and access was no more when the remaining four or five jets showed up. All we were told was that these jets were at Nellis for a Special Project and nothing more. The rest of the story was that these jets were the initial equipment for the 4450th Tactical Group, the unit providing initial and continuation training for the F-117 unit at Tonapah range. There wasn't anything special about the jets, the security measures were to minimize access to the maintainers and aircrew that were later to go up range to play with Black Jets. The jets moved up range after a couple of months and were not seen again. When the F-117s were officially revealed to the world, these were the A-7s that appeared in Euro One camouflage carrying the 4450th unit shield and the "LV" tail code. (Apologies for the color cast on the first two images, wasn't able to remove it with Photoshop without making the rest of the image weird.) 69-6198 69-6201 69-6244 70-1023 Thanks for looking, Sven

  22. Hi again chaps, I've deviated from the Phantom to pick out a different jet type, the LTV A-7D Corsair II. These images were taken during a visit to the 125th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Tulsa, Oklahoma. I hope there are some SLUF lovers out there? Martin
  23. YA-7D, USAF s/n 69-6195, recently transferred from the 3246th Test Wing at Eglin AFB FL to the 6510th Test Wing at Edwards AFB CA. At the time, the 3246th belonged to the Air Force Armament Division at Eglin, the 6510th belonged to the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) at Edwards. That’s the Armament Division shield on the forward fuselage. The Air Force Systems Command (AFSC) shield is on the other side. Surprised that the paint shop replaced the Armament Division tail band (white with red diamonds) with the AFFTC band (blue with white Xs), but didn't remove the shield at the same time. Note the US Navy style air refueling probe aft of the nose radome characteristic of the YA-7D. Images from a practice safety chase mission in 1984. Armament Division shield removed, surprised it wasn’t replaced with the AFFTC shield. Camo has certainly weathered over the three years since the above photo, including faded national insignias… The red portion of the insignia is the first to be baked away by the desert sun. Seen this effect on many F-4s stationed at Nellis AFB in the 1970's as well. Just a touch of staining beneath the aft fuselage... Left side, well-worn national insignia. That’s the AF Systems Command badge on the forward fuselage peeking out beneath the wing pylons. Turning final over Rogers Dry Lake. Note the RAT is deployed. Looks like the right wing flap and the outboard leading edge flaps have been replaced from a bird with wrap-around camo. Marvelous what depot maintenance and a coat of paint can do. In 1985 as the AFFTC commander’s aircraft… travel pod at the ready on the inboard wing pylon. Thanks for looking, Sven
  24. When the 353rd TFS & 355th TFS of the 354th TFW deployed to Thailand for operations over Vietnam, their aircraft retained all their identifying unit markings, which seems to have been fairly rare among units in Southeast Asia. There are a couple of items regarding these markings that I'm still unsure of, but I'm sure someone here knows what I'm trying to find out. Basically, I have two questions: (1) The aircraft displayed a red or blue band at the top of the fin, which typically identifies the squadron within the wing, but which was which? (2) The Wing badge (the white shield in the photo above) was applied to both sides of the fuselage on most aircraft, but occasionally, the squadron badge was displayed on the port side instead. Was this done throughout the wing at a certain time, or did have some other significance, or was there no real pattern to it? In fact, were squadron badges applied at all while the wing was in Thailand, or were they only used at home? 355th TFS insignia: 356th TFS (3rd squadron of the 354th TFW, not deployed to Thailand) Thanks in advance for any help.
  25. I finished this one earlier tonight, having started it back in September for the Vietnam group build. I got the kit in a model shop in Madrid last July and when someone posted photos of the real "Molar Marauder" I searched out the Two Bobs decal set to allow me to build it. The plane only had this goofy dental artwork for a single day as the Sergeant who painted it dutifully followed the instructions of the young pilot who gave him the design of the artwork, but when the Sqn. Commander saw what it looked like the plane was quickly repainted. I don't think the aircraft ever took to the air with this mouth painted on it! The kit itself was a challenge, I thought the construction of the wings was complex and not everything fitted that well. Also the undercarriage doors were a complete pain to position. I used an Eduard photoetch set for the interior and exterior, a set of resin wheels, an Aires ejection seat (on which I used the Eduard photoetch), an Eduard mask set and some Furball canopy trim decals. Link here to the build thread: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234988177-148-hasegawa-vought-a-7d-corsair-ii-molar-marauder/
