  1. New build on the way... Always liked this plane when seen it in films, tv or the news... Cockpit started... Will build into the fuselage next, but I have read it can be fun! So... The big lesson learnt from my Messerschmitt Me 262 build was NOSE WEIGHT, when asked for. Ballsed that up, so, I pre-armed myself with Liquid Gravity for such a future occasion... And so we come to the A-10. Use blue tack/card to make holding spaces - not the most elegant. But think it'll do the job, I'm sure I'll refine how this is done as I grow. Anyway, weighing this cockpit it weighs approx. 36g, so hoping that'll be enough! Anyway... As alwways, I'm never in a hurry and will post pics as I remember to take them! Hope you enjoy! Thinking ahead to the main painting... I do have some Revell aluminium in a rattle can - used on my Mustang P-51B and was somwehat happy with the finish ... But I was wondering on using Halfords Mazda Aluminium Car Spray Paint, or any advice/thoughts on how to achieve the best aluminium look?
  2. Hello everyone. I am happy to present my finished model of A-10A as flown in Operation Iraqi Freedom back in 2003 by Captain Kim Campbell. On 7/4/2003 this specific aircraft was badly hit by A/A over Bagdad, however Cpt Campbell managed to bring the aircraft back and land safely!!! The model is the Academy 1/72 kit and no aftermarket products were used. It is painted in Humbrol colours Hu127 and Hu128 and received a mat finish with GUNZE acrylic matt coat. I managed to do a few improvements to the cockpit, the landing gear and added some antennas, sensors, etc. The overall impression of the kit is that it has very nice detail in panel lines, rivets, etc, but the fit is just horrible! There was no part that went together with another without the use of putty and sandpaper! The decals went on nicely even thought they are thick. However the sharkmouth decal was not used on the aircraft's nose. Instead it was painted. I understand that the weapon load is non realistic (someone told me that the plane can not take off like this) but when I was putting it together I didn't know that. Well, it could be a display plane in an Air Force Open Day! In any case, these is the complete model that I hope you like! Thank you very much for your time. Take care everyone and keep modelling!!!
  3. Hello everyone! First topic on WiP and hope it goes well! The kit is the Academy 1/72 A-10A Thunderbolt II. When I bought it I thought it was a real bargain! Only 12Euros, nice engraved panel lines with some rivets on, plenty of weapons, nice plastic, what could possibly go wrong? Well, when the built started I realised that the kit has very poor fit in almost all the important parts (upper and lower wing parts, engine base with rear fuselage, wings with fuselage, etc). I have heard (but it was too late) that the decals are trouble as well... Anyway, I don't like being grouchy so I will continue with positive thoughts and energy to my built! I started with the landing gear bays and struts. At this point I need to mention that I had decided to do this strictly out of the box, without any improvements and aftermarkets. But when I started with the front landing gear bay I realised that it looked seriously wrong comparing to reference photos. So I changed my mind and proceeded to some limited improvements with what I have on my bench. Aftermarkets are still banned due to severe budget restrictions... So the inner structure of front bay was enriched with some plastic strips and cables just to look busy enough. Weight was added at the front in order to avoid tail sitting when everything will be in place. Some work was done to the landing gear bays on the wings. They were painted black and then white. Some wiring was also added to the rear struts. The cockpit was kept as it was from the kit. Only the side panels were scribed to outline the panels of switches and buttons when the decals would go on them but didn't do any difference. The cockpit was painted with Humbrol 140. The seat on the other hand received more love from me. I added the cushion at the back of the seat made from metal foil, wiring and few details at the sides, few details on the headrest, harnesses and ejection handle. Here is the cockpit before the decals... ...and here after the decals. The engraved lines were not necessary but it was not much trouble anyway! Here is the seat, painted awaiting an oil wash... ... and after the wash. I didn't want to over do it. It's only an advanced and super expensive chair after all! That is all for now. I will come back to you soon with an update as the built has proceeded a bit. Hope you find it interesting. Fire at will if there is something that you think goes wrong with the built! Take care everyone and stay safe!

  5. I've been thinking of doing some USAFE stuff in 1/48 for a while now, and after a recent holiday to Suffolk, including a rather hot walk in Rendlesham Forest right up to the old fence at Woodbridge (and the obligatory trip to LN!) what better way to start than with the legendary A-10 Warthog. After some excellent advice on this site, I decided on the Italeri one. I'm sure all the kits have their pros and cons, but this seemed the best for my subject. Of course I'll need to find the right decals as this Hog will be a Bentwaters bird from circa 1986/87. WR tailcodes a must! Nice box art, and some decent looking stuff on the sprues. Euro 1 colour scheme. All major camo colours I'll use rattle cans for. Overall grey first, then the greens ... Big decal sheet with plenty of detail and stencils! I'm always pleased to see cockpit instrument decals too, much better than my hamfisted painting attempts.
  6. Hi all, I'm looking to build a Bentwaters/Woodbridge Warthog in 1/48, what are my best options? So far I've seen Esci, Monogram, Tamiya and something called 'PMS' which has the same image on the box as the Tamiya kit (plus a Vulcan, of all things, in the background!) I'm not a rivet counter, but I don't want it to be too inaccurate like the wrong shape or anything. And it needs 81st TFW decals. Any advice please?

  18. One of my A-10 flight tests in 1984-85 with the 6512th Test Squadron. The A-10 Combined Test Force at Edwards AFB was shut down at the end of 1983. The remaining A-10 test programs and two A-10s were turned over to the 6512th. When the test programs were completed in mid-1985, the A-10s were sent to the 3246th Test Wing at Eglin AFB as part of a consolidation of Systems Command A-7Ds at Edwards and A-10s at Eglin. '666 was my Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS, pronounced jip-wiz) test jet. A program aimed at reducing controlled flight into terrain incidents. The A-10 GPWS consisted of a black box processing radar altimeter (RADALT) data and making voice and HUD warnings. Because of the low altitude maneuvering of the A-10A in prosecuting close air support, RADALT transmit and receive antennas were installed on both vertical tails as well as under the horizontal stab. An attitude sensor switched which RADALT pair were active at any given time to preclude a sidewards proximity, like a canyon wall, creating a pull-up warning. '666 prior to GPWS installation After. GPWS antennas at the base of the tail. You can just make out the GPWS antennas beneath the horizontal stab GPWS evaluation essentially consisted of throwing the jet at the ground in various attitudes and verifying that the "roll-out" and/or "pull-up" warning came on when it was supposed to. Not the best camo for the Mojave Desert... Approach to a touch 'n' go at nearby George AFB Refueling from the 'Business Effort' tanker from the Illinois Air National Guard With test events completed, joining up with a 6512TS 'Vark Return to base. South end of Rogers Dry Lake flooded - not unusual in the winter/spring. Always check the status of the lakebed runways before stepping to the jet! Thanks for looking, Sven

  20. A disclaimer: this set is from my collection but are official Air Force Flight Test Center photos. The AFFTC reference numbers are on the images. When I moved from the F-16XL Combined Test Force (CTF) in 1984 to the 6512th Test Squadron (Test Ops), there were two clean-outs taking place. The A-10 CTF was closing, in part to make room for the Advanced Tactical Fighter CTF, the YF-22/YF-23 competition, and because A-10 development flight test was pretty much coming to an end. A quarter mile away, Test Ops was making room to accept the two remaining A-10 test programs that had to be completed before the last of the Hogs were traded to Eglin in exchange for a couple of A-7Ds. The Hog trade was a logistic consideration to consolidate A-10 test operations at Eglin with the 3246th Test Wing, while consolidating A-7D test support operations at Edwards with the 6510TW. A-7D testing was rarely required at this point in the SLUFF's life cycle, but the SLUFF was still a valued support aircraft and part of the USAF Test Pilot School curriculum as a systems bird and spin instruction airframe. At the A-10 building, we were told to throw out anything that we didn't want - apparently the engineers and history office had already picked over the vacating offices. I found these pictures in the back of a desk drawer. At Test Ops, in closing a door that had apparently been propped open for 25 years, on the back of the door was a map showing all the X-15 emergency landing sites from Utah down to Southern California, with appropriate notes. I don't know what I was doing that was so important, but I made a mental note to come back to save the map for myself. When I got back about 30 minutes later it was GONE! Of course no one knew what I was on about when I asked where the map went - "Map? What map?" Pulling of hair, rending of flight suit - you get the idea... Anyway, the pics. One from 1979, the rest from 1980. Icing tests of what I am quite sure is Full-Scale Development (FSD) jet, s/n 73-1667. This is the 1979 picture. Note the camera mounted on the right wing tip. I think it is focused on the right engine intake. The orange outline of the access panel aft of the cockpit indicates special test instrumentation is located there. There is also a non-standard outlet mounted proud of the panel. Several ice measuring probes are visible on the aircraft nose, the landing gear sponson, the wing leading edge, and at the front of the Pave Penny shape. As usual, the water from the icing tanker has yellow dye for in-flight visualization. Into 1980... Wing-tip camera removed. With A-37B chase, showing the typical icing test set-up. Approaching the icing rig at the end of the tanker boom. Some ice build-up Probably near the limit for ice on the wing leading edge. The little orange rectangles are the attachment points for the ice probes. Often published October 1975 photo of three FSD jets with the two YA-10 prototypes at the back. That's '667 up front. Behind her is '666, later to become one of my test jets for Nitramine ammunition trials and terrain avoidance system tests. The next, with the "1" on the tail is '664, eventually modified to the two-seat Night/Adverse Weather configuration. then 71-1370 and 71-1369. Thanks for looking, Sven
  21. Hi guys, I recently dug out an old Tamiya 1/48 A-10A Thunderbolt II kit that I had stashed away for some time. Decided to build it as the decal has started to yellow. I probably got this kit 10 years ago so I did not know about its problems then. I am now fixing it and am wondering if anyone who have done this kit well, has any advice on how to patch the following without using aftermarket parts (since I don't want to spend more money on this kit). 1) The front wheel well is open on the top and front that you could see all the way to the cockpit. It befuddles me why Tamiya is so cheapskate to leave out two small parts that would make the wheel well complete. Its like someone forgot a wall and roof for a house. I was thinking of using some cheap plastic cards to make the roof however wonder how to carve the surface so that it is not a flat ceiling but has some semblance of cables and bars? 2) The two bulge on the wings for the landing gear, the rear part of each is a gaping hole. It seems like the engineer at Tamiya forgot to mold in the rear area. Sigh, looks like I have to fill these and mold them close with putty. Any easy way to do this? 3) The rear of the cockpit has a gaping hole too where the seat does not cover it. Looks like another piece of home made plastic panel. 4) The bottom of the nose for the front wheel well bulges out at the side and is not flush with the rest of the body. Trying to see if I can put a strut inside just below the cockpit to push out the fuselage a bit to make it flush with the bottom part. Problem is that area is blocked by the cockpit well and wheel well. At this point I am only thinking of fixing the major gaps. Not even going to reshape the other deformities.
  22. Kit manufacture: Hasegawa Scale: 1/72 Type: A-10A Thunderbolt II Extras used: Verlinden Productions resin and photoetch update Paints and colours used: Vallejo Model Air Ghost Grey in the cockpit, various Vallajo and Tamiya paints inside, Gunze H57 Aircraft Grey, H301 Grey FS36081, H302 Green FS34092 and H303 Green FS34102 for the camo colours. Aqua Gloss, Tamiya Semi Gloss and Flat Coat were used for the clear coats. Weather was done with thinned down Tamiya Rubber black and Flory Dark Dirt weathering wash. The kit was ok... Raised panel lines are a pain as they are hard to reproduce when lost through sanding as well as cause issues with holding wash. The fit wasn't great; a lot of filler and sanded needed. To be fair it is an older kit and the amount of resin and lead I crammed in definitely didn't help. That said, it wasn't cheap for an older kit. I bought this before I really new about reboxing etc, and knowing what I know now I'd have probably invested the same money on a new kit. At the end of the day, I'm pleased with how she turned out and she undeniably looks like a hog. Here's the pics: So there we go! Thanks for looking! Comments and criticism welcome as always, Many thanks, Val
