Time to throw my hat in the ring with this very important GB, and I'm choosing an often overlooked but very important subject both in terms of the aircraft and the operator as both the A-20 and the 9th AF do not receive anything like the attention they deserve for their part in both the invasion and the subsequent liberation of Europe. My kit of choice is the Revell/AMT 1/48 A-20 which comes with the option of either a gun nosed G or glazed nose J and the option for the G is even applicable to this GB being an aircraft from the 647th BS of the 410th BG based at Gosfield in Essex, shown to good effect on the very nice box art; I also have some other decal sheets with some more suitable aircraft on them; Out of these aircraft the front runner for me is "Skonk Works" on the Kits-World decal sheet; But this is a bit problematical. I have found some good clear pictures of the airframe around the time of D-Day and just after and they show that the aircraft didn't carry the nose art at the time and still had the undersurface stripes in full colour, I have also found a clear picture of the nose art but no way to prove that it was on this actual aircraft as it only shows the nose. It is also in the place that a mission tally scoreboard is on the pictures which certainly are this airframe and I don't think crews were in the habit of covering up these markings which were very important to them. The aircraft serial number is 43-10213 in case anyone thinks they can help. I also have some reference material; I like the A-20 in case you hadn't guessed. I hope to be able to make a start on this in the next couple of days. Thanks for looking in and as usual all comments and criticisms are gratefully received. Craig.

Hi all, I'm considering my options for the D-Day Group Build which is just getting underway and one of the subjects close to the top of the pile is a 1/48 Douglas A-20 Havoc as used by the 9thAF. I already have the kit and have a couple of decal sheets for the subject and one of the options on a Kits World sheet is for 43-10213 from the 647th BS of the 410th BG which sports a very large piece of nose art of a Skunk and the has the name "Skonk Works", the aircraft is shown with partial D-Day stripes (sometime around August I would think). My quandary is this, I cannot find a picture showing her in this set of markings. there are clear pictures of 43-10213 around this time with the codes 6Q-R (as shown on the decal instructions and profiles, yes I know) but without the nose art and just a set of mission marks such as these; https://www.americanairmuseum.com/archive/media/media-32904jpeg https://www.americanairmuseum.com/archive/media/media-32935jpeg There is a clear picture of the nose art too, the 5th one down on this link; http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/URG/a20havoc_gallery_ground.html But nothing that marries the two identities together, or gives a date that the aircraft received it's nose art. So before I get started I would like to know if anyone can shed any light on this subject. Thanks in advance. Craig.

Hello everyone … I present to you my 2nd build from the Matchbox nostalgic group build. It is in the markings of the 645th B.S, 410th B.G., 9th A.A.F. The kit is the older 1/72 Matchbox kit with no modification, the only decals are nose art, star & bars, and codes everything else is painted. The nose is painted to represent an A-20J bomber variant. The young enterprising officer is hoping to lure in enemy aircraft to a frontal attack. This would allow him to open up all 6 .50’s on an unsuspecting German pilot. Yes the props spin in case anyone wondered. Please feel free to ask questions, leave comments, or visit my build thread. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235104196-douglas-a-20-havocboston/ Dennis

Hi Britmodellers, I'm looking for information and pictures of the B-26B flown by the 387th B.G. in 1945 named Hamilton Hey Maker II. Her serial was 42-96205, coded KX-N in the inventory of 387th BG/ 558th BS. There's a Kit's World decal sheet with her markings, and I want to portray this aircraft at the end of her career in 1945. All I found so far is a color profile in the Osprey book "B-26 Units of the Eighth and Ninth Air Forces" by Jerry Scutts, so I'm pretty much stucked with my research here. The plane was in the inventory of the 397th BG before transferred to 387th. If someone has a photo of this plane, or any idea of the original source where I can find it (books, websites, etc), and share the information with me, I would be more than happy! 😀

Hello everyone... With my RF-4B Phantom shelved due to unforeseen circumstances. I decided to go dig in my stash. I found three Kits that would fall under the rules, though two of them are slated for the Corsair STGB. That left this kit, Monograms classic P-47D Thunderbolt from 1983. I first built this very kit in junior high about the time it came out in this boxing, so ‘83-‘84. I would build three more of these before I was 21. https://www.scalemates.com/kits/monogram-6838-thunderbolt-p-47d--159066 I found this kit by chance last November at the one local swap meet here in Chicago and grabbed it. A gentleman was selling his late fathers collection. I grabbed two kits this one and the Monogram P-51B for a total of $7. Both were bagged kits this one still in a shrink wrapped box. So for the obligatory sprue photos. Now the kit is not difficult as its only about 40 pieces total. Here are the Kit Markings, “The Turtle #10 509th Fs., 405th Fg, 9th USAAF based somewhere in France summer 1944. The other option are these two Jugs. These are also from the same 405th Fg. The 509th and 510 Fs. I have a fourth and fifth option but would need custom decals printed for that plane, and it would be from the 12th A.F. 57th Fg. in Italy. If I can find someone to make them for me it would definitely move up to the front. The last one would be to cobble the markings to make a RAF Thunderbolt II from the CBI Theatre. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or thoughts. Dennis

Hello everyone... Ive built numerous Thunderbolts over the years and have tried to get this correct but never seem to. Ive seen many photo’s over the years, both b&w and color. I have seen aluminum finish, YZC, and interior green on the insides of the cowling and supercharger intake. So which is accurate for a 509th Fs. 405th Fg. post D-day these are the markings I'm going with. Research says it most likely a D-28-RA 42-29147 if that helps. Second question is about load-outs, Im planning on going with a 108 gallon paper-tank on the centerline. Then triple bazooka and bombs on the wings ? I think thats a decent standard load-out for use at that time. Just to confirm the gear bays are YZC correct. Dennis In case you're wondering I have eight builds on the go. I'm trying to keep all the info in the brain-case. Time will tell if I'm successful ?
