  1. Hello all, just want to tap into the BM Hive-mind to shed some light on some of those tiny tiny details that delight modellers everywhere. Now I have rescued one of the longest-serving members of my ever-expanding Shelf of Doom Club, a Revell re-pop of the Hasegawa 1/48 Phantom FGR.2. Now this kit went to the SOD at least 15 years ago dressed in my then stock finish of Humbrol Enamels, in the later Air Superiority grey finish. It wasn't a bad build for my skills of the time, but I had knocked off and lost one of the flaperons and thus she never got finished. Roll away those years and whilst building my RAF Sabre F4 a couple of years back I had been reading about stripping paint from old models and decided to give this a dose of the old-style Oven Pride and to finally finish the kit off in the DG/DSG 70's style camo whilst I had those colours out for the Sabre. Now having built it with the Marconi RWR Fin Cap in place I was limited with marking options, especially not wishing to do the kit scheme. However I found an option on the Xtradecals X48199 sheet for XV413 of 92 Sqn. Now I was happy to take their word for accuracy as I could find no photos at all of the airframe in 92 Sqn service online, and TBH I just wanted this one over the line; the re-build is now so so close to an RFI (stick on the missiles, a Flory Wash and a Satin Coat and we're there), so what could possibly go wrong? This morning I received a copy of Richard L Ward's Phantom Squadrons of the Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm, that I'd bought on eBay that's what!! I thought I'd just flick through and have a look at the 92 Sqn pages and blow me sideways there's only a photo of XV413 in the right timeframe. Timing or what? Now this photo (copy below scanned from the book including the photo's credits) shows a couple of Zaps applied, one of an aircraft on the tail and another of risque footprints on the lower rear fuselage. Now these do not appear on the Xtradecals sheet, (and also the Z for Zulu appears much thicker than as printed on the sheet). I can also see some wording on the intake splitter that I guess is Sticker No. 18 from the Xtradecals sheet that I can find no menton of in the destructions, (saying that it looks very much like it has been typoed as 14 on the instruction sheet so mystery over - with the brain-fog I've got at the moment I looked and looked and looked at the destructions but never made that link until typing this here! Doh!)!. Anyways do any of the BM Brethren have any further information on, or photos of these Zaps for XV413? Thanks in advance as usual, and do stay safe out there. Chris
  2. Hello everyone... I started my R.S.Tuck collection with his Vb in the Spitfire STGB. My goal is to do one of his Spitfires from 92 Squadron flown during the Battle of Britain. I will be using Airfix’s 1/72 Mk.I but at this time I am still trying to nail down codes ? Its possible he flew another GR coded Spitfire, however the one represented by the decals was lost in France in May. 92 Squadron refirmed in the U.K. After the fall of France and codes I think were changed to QJ. If thats accurate I'm trying to find codes for Z3040 QJ*Z or another QJ aircraft that he was known to have used. Those would I believe to be R6616 QJ*X, N3268 QJ*Y, or R6613 QJ*R. So one of those four aircraft are what I am looking for. Im temporarily using a set of Sprue shots from the web as Im waiting on the kit to get here. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and add thoughts. Please feel free if you have info on Tucks planes from the time frame of the Battle, please let me know. Dennis
  3. Hi Folks, I’ve been working my way through the new Tamiya Spitfire MkI and using top notch masks I planned to do Spitfire X4330 QJ-G. Believing this to be one of Geoffrey Wellums I have subsequently found that it is a 616 Sqn a/c. The other option in the mask set is K9998 ‘K’ which is believed to be Geoffreys first spitfire. My questions is by the time Geoffrey was flying it in September 1940 how much would K9998 look like a later Spitfire MkI with: armoured windscreen streamlined aerial mast voltage regulator behind pilots head armoured panel on fuel tank rear view mirror bent landing gear handle removed etc etc? I have found some comments online of someone asking what variant of spitfire he flew and he describes it has having the pole type aerial mast and no IFF but at what point would these mods occur on K9998 (if they did at all). Presumably he would have the armoured windscreen by Sep. I ask as the cockpit of the Tamiya kit I have made, I have left out the older style landing gear pumping handle and I have the voltage reg behind the pilots head. thanks Nick
  4. Merry Christmas everybody. I've just finished up one of my Battle of Britain GB entries, just a hair past the deadline (OK, two months). Yes, it's another 1/72 Airfix Spitfire, which you may be sick of seeing, but no one should ever tire of building. It is one of the most enjoyable kits to build of any I've attempted. The plane represents a Spitfire I flown by Ralph 'Titch' Havercroft serving with 92 Sqn during the Battle of Britain. Most of the build thread is here, but there's a little more here. And because I always enjoy it when people put a bonus build at the end, here it is next to a 303 Sqn Mk II from the same kit.
  5. I became a 92 Sqn enthusiast by pure coincidence. I joined the Lightning STGB last year with absolutely no knowledge of the Lightning, but the Airfix kit had a very attractive natural metal 92 Sqn scheme out of the box and I went for it. Now I'm hooked, and am jumping at the chance to honor the squadron's participation in the Battle of Britain. I'm planning on using the Airfix kit and transfers from Xtradecal for what should be a very pleasant build if my previous experience of this kit is any indication.
  6. After realising that I participated in over 200 posts I have yet to present a model for inspection. I have a Hasegawa Hurricane and Airfix BF109f on the bench. I finally completed my FW 190-A3. So this is my actually my second completed model. it is also my first attempt at some sort of base. I started the model just over two weeks ago and was in a rush to finish it last night (13/8/14) )so that I could present it as a gift to a young Chinese lad that I have been helping prepare for his IELTS test. A few weeks ago we were practising the "listening exercises" and all I think of at the time was to briefly narrate the story of Douglas Bader. Shock and horror- he had no idea what a Spitfire was. This needed to be corrected and once, so I thought that would build him a model as a keepsake. The results are below. There are number of things I'm really unhappy about in the build namely the canopy , being unable to get any type of dihedral on the wings and a few obvious the mishaps that started occurring as the clock neared midnight last night and I was extremely tired. As always I welcome comments criticisms suggestions and a general whack on the head with appropriate words "Proby" - ( Jethro Gibbs NCIS) Appologies for the duplication: I posted this in Work in Progress with some terrible grammar : Note to self - Don't use dictation Software when tired"
