  1. My last of the 1/144 787s and probably one of the most attractive liveries for the Dreamliner. ANA had signed a 5 year contract with Disney and painted at least 4 of their aircraft in special Star Wars liveries. Maybe some of you remember that a few years back,I already built that model, then with a 787-8,streched with resin plugs. After I had finished that kit,Zvezda announced their -9 kit... I actually never planned to build the R2D2 livery again because of its complicated design. But a friend kept asking to sell him that model,so last year I finally gave in and sold it,which led me to the point to build another one for my collection again. This time I used the 787-9 kit from Zvezda and a decal set from PAS instead 8A decs. The decals were great to work with and are also durable enough to accept some heavy handling and trimming. Again for the windows Authentic Airliner windows were used and details come from the nice Zvezda decal sheet and the spares box. Painted with Gunze white surface primer 1500,clear coated with Gunze premium gloss prior and after the endless decal session. All other paints are Gunze as well. Now my Dreamliners are all done and the Star Wars jet is back in my collection. No matter what, there wont be ever a 3rd R2D2 build😉 May the force be with you Alex
  2. I am not the biggest fan of the 787,but somehow it grew on me to a certain degree and 3 Zvezda/Revell kits managed to enter my collection and now happened to be built all together. For the 787-8 I chose the delivery scheme ANA applied to their Dreamliners, with large "787" titling at the fron instead of the usual "ANA" titling. The kit is probably well known for its pros and cons,so I will not go into detail here . The build was pretty straight forward as everthing fits well with only a little putty and sanding required. The landing gear is the most fiddly part as it is very delicate and fragile. The decals are from BSmodelle and are very well done. Windows are from Authentic Airliners and details come from the Revell/Zvezda sheets and from the spares box. The whole model was spray painted with Gunze white surface primer 1500 ,clear coated with Gunze Premium gloss airbrushed prior and after decal application. Some photos revealed that at the time of delivery the wifi (hump) antenna had not been installed yet,so I left it off. The other antennas I left off too as they always tend to snap off during cleaning the models and then disappear on the floor. Cheers Alex
  3. I present my Revell 787-8 Dreamliner in the Qatar Airways livery. I saw this Aircraft at EDI in May 2017 and wanted to build it as the pilots waved at my then 2 year old Daughter and it made her day. I also find the colours of Qatar Airways very elegant. The build was OOB. I did enjoy the build of this kit, however some of the ‘extra details’ aren’t including in this kit like the antennas. I like how well the kit goes together and only minimal filling was required (although I am trying to get the hang of the filling and sanding process). I think I might buy the Zvezda kit in the future, although I have another Revell 787-8 in my stash which I’m thinking will be ‘LOT Polish Airlines’. I was struggling to find the right shade of grey for the upper fuselage, as it looks very different under various lighting. I mixed my own version using Revell Aqua colours Light grey 76 and 371, it might not be 100% but I am happy with the end result. It was brush painted, which can probably be picked up from the pictures. The White is Halfords Appliance White, and the greys are a mixture of Revell’s Aqua colour range. The Decals are from Ray at 26 and complimented with the kit decals. This was also my first attempt at using AA ‘Photo real’ windows and cockpit decals, and I don’t think I ever want to use anything else again. They are excellent and really add that extra bit of life and detail to the model. My photos hopefully depict a scene of her arriving on Stand, with the Airbridge attached and views from the ramp. (Sorry if there are too many photos). Thanks for looking and any comments and constructive criticism is always welcomed. Regards, Alistair
  4. Zvezda 787-9 Virgin Atlantic Dreamliner G-VNEW Kit - Zvezda 787-9 Decals Pas Decals (Titles & Doors) Authentic Airliners (windows) Paints Revell 4 White Gloss & Xtracolor MICA1 (fuselage) Revell 4 White Gloss (Wings and horizontal stabilizers) Tamiya ts18 Metallic Red (Tail & engines) Thanks for looking!
  5. been busy.... Fancied building a dreamliner kit for a while now, I had previously considered doing a 787-8 to 787-9 conversion job but when Zvezda brought out the 787-9 kit I couldn't resist. Like most Zvezda kits its beautifully detailed. To my surprise the fuselage halves didn't go together as well as I'd expected and then i had a slight hiccup. All i will say is don't use a superglue with a fast cure! When working on the wings be sure to be careful with the raked wingtips, they can be easily snapped off if they brush against something, which is what happened to my zvezda 777 wingtips. It might be worth taping the ends up to protect them until painting. For Virgin colours there were 2 main ways I considered for the metallic red effect 1. use tamiya TS18 (spray can) or 2. use Revell clear red on top of a silver metallic finish i went for the spray can finish, which although looks decent, i regret!! reasons being the amount of waste from the can as it gets everywhere, I probably got more on the wall than the model, clearly spray cans are not ideal for doing 1/144 scale models. To get a good even coverage it needs to be sprayed from a good distance and it has a tendency to spit the paint out unexpectedly. it also gets under any type of masked area as it leaks - the stuff of nightmares! If you ever use a tamiya spray can and for this virgin atlantic finish I would advise spray the red first then mask off the tail and use an airbrush for the main body finish (white/grey pearlescent). it might seem strange white/grey going on top of red but the red paint will just splutter underneath the masked area and cause more work if done the logical way like I have. first attempts were lumpy and uneven. plenty of buffing will be required later. also remember to cover up the whole model (unlike me) a sandwich bag over the nose is a quick method protecting the fuselage the curved area below the tail is very difficult to achieve. you can get hold of thinner masking tape 'for curves' which is a good idea above - tidied up the tail with a bit buff. The fuselage looks white but its 85% gloss white, 15% revell 371 light grey. I can't tell if I've added xtra color 'mica' in this photo that is a pearlescent effect. the mica on top does cloud the finish a slightly 'off white' so in hindsight if you are doing a modern virgin atlantic finish i'd recommend mica on top of gloss white - it won't look gloss white after you add the mica! quickly moved on with the wings, red paint everywhere! you'll notice the plastic added into the inside of the fuselage piece, this is for the aircraft stand - i dont use the zvezda stands, i custom make the gap for a clear academy display stand. The dreamliner leading edge flaps are not straight forward to paint. the metallic part seems to just run right on the edge of 60% of the wing. You'll need good reference shots for this. the metallic area needs another coat or 2 of alclad. the flash light on camera shows the edge of the wing quite ugly (below) time to throw on a few decals (the fun part) nice decals, courtesy of PAS decals 3-d windows from authentic airliners. camera flash shows the tail finish off a bit better. the 3-d windows a little bit featureless compared to previous ones i've purchased but still good quaility wings added and horizontal stabs. neither are glued on put fit without effort. I've also started engines. progress will be delayed for a bit as i need more tamiya red to finish engines off also note that stabs and wings are pure gloss white. No doubt when i put on the RFI i will get some quality day shots as these night shots arent the best - heres another showing the tail in without camera flash more to follow....
  6. This is my latest build, Zvezda's 787. I used the 26 Decals set for the livery, and I can definitely reccomend it!
  7. Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This particular 787, test designated as ZA002 and registered as N787EX (msn 40691), is the second Boeing 787-8 to be produced. The airplane flew for the first time on December 22, 2009, joining what would become a six-airplane flight test and certification program for the 787-8. The primary focus of ZA002 was testing systems performance. Boeing donated this aircraft to the Pima Air & Space Museum, Tucson, Arizona, USA. Pics thanks to Paul Bradley.
  8. Hell fellow modellers. I have finally completed my Norwegian Air Shuttle fleet. A project that has lasted me far too long. The first model being the Revell 737-800, LN-NOL, was finished back in November 2012. The -300 was completed back in January 2014. Now, two years later, the Dreamliner is complete. My target back in the days, was to model one of each plane type in the 2012 fleet. The -300 has now been withdrawn from service. The Dreamliner has switched registration, so its now on norwegian registration; LN-LNA, and accordingly, the 737-800 has changed from LN-NOL to EI-FHC. 9. Hi there, After the Air New Zealand A320 decals, Attach Before Flight has released another two decal sheets, this time for Azerbaijan Airlines: These two, just like the ANZ sheet are printed by BOA in the Czech Republic. I have bought the A320 sheet because some of these jets had/ have a bit of extra colour, carrying titles for the 1st European Games held in Azerbaijan's capital Baku in 2015. Maybe I'll go for a double build: Azerbaijan A320 and Indian Airlines A320... Cheers, Niki
  10. Chaps. Nice to see something like this being used properly. Rick.
  11. Well, I realise it's a bit late in the day to start a WIP on this one, but technically it's not finished yet, so here goes. I picked up this kit quite cheaply from Creative Models and I am quite pleased with it. 1/200 is not a scale I've built in before, but for aircraft of this size it still gives a fairly sizable model. On the whole, this is a good kit - fit is generally very good, with a couple of minor exceptions (wing halves). It looks pretty accurate to me, and unlike the Zvezda/Revell version includes separate parts for the Trent 1000 and GEnX engines (although to be honest the differences are quite subtle). The only error I have noted is the APU intake being moulded on the wrong side of the fin. Panel lines are a little on the heavy side, particularly on the fuselage. I had originally planned this as a LOT Polish Airlines aircraft, but having got two sets of decals (both laser printed) wasn't really all that happy with the resolution (being particularly picky really), so I've gone with the kit decals. Coincidentally, I also saw this aircraft when it visited the Farnborough Airshow back in 2010 when it did a flypast with two Spitfires (http://www.airliners.net/photo/Boeing/Boeing-787-8-Dreamliner/1745320/L/&sid=a9351297298616bba1b5f732614e8323). This is meant to be a quick (for me) build, so I've dispensed with the landing gear and done it in flight. It's painted in Tamiya acrylic spray and Alclad laquers for the leading edges/APU exhaust. Engines and stabilisers are still to be done, and it's still awaiting a clear gloss coat of some description: Untitled by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr Untitled by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr Untitled by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr Untitled by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr I still need to tidy up the tail decals a little. The kit decals are alright, if a little thick and on the matt side. Hope you like it! Cheers, Andrew
