  1. My quick build of the Airfix 1/72 North American P-51B Mustang (02083) which was knocked out for an ATF Bomber Command GB in less than two weeks. It represents an RAF Mustang III flown by Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire's Mustang HB837 attached to 617 Squadron. I wasn't hundred percent sure of the extent of the yellow on the leading edges nor the colour of the spinner (sky or white have both been suggested). The more I researched them, the more confused I got and in the end I "winged it". Decals came from the spares box and the XtraDecal 617 Squadron set (X72093). The "Malcolm Hood" transparencies are from Falcon and are a bit oversize (they were supposed to be for a Hasegawa kit) but the result is still okay. Dave
  2. Good Morning! I build almost exclusively aircraft from the 1970s and later, so this is a bit outside of my area of expertise. A very good friend of mine is building NF920 "Easy Elsie," a Lancaster special that had to make a forced landing in northern Sweden after being damaged during one of the Tirpitz raids. He's using the Hasegawa kit: Link to Scalemates Based on some other great information here on Britmodeller, we figured out that post 1942, the roundels on the side of the fuselage should be 54" tall. NF920 was rolled of the assembly line in 1944, so that fits that bill. In 1/72 scale, 54" should be about 19.05mm tall The difficulty is that the roundels on the Hasegawa kit decal sheet are 21mm tall. Can anyone confirm a good aftermarket source that has correctly sized roundels? Xtradecal Maybe? Or Techmod? I'm not familiar with Techmod decal quality though. These two are the least expensive options in the Hannants catalogue... Cheers and thanks! Hoops
  3. My own contribution to this build will be a Hasegawa Grand Slam Lancaster to be built as PD117 YZ-L of 617 Sqn.
  4. Good Evening, I'm much more of a Cold War/Modern aircraft modeller, but a good friend of mine from Sweden wants to build the aforementioned aircraft. He visited the site where it lays in the bogs of northern Sweden and has the Hasegawa "Special Missions" boxing of their Lancaster kit. It was damaged during the Tirpitz raid and the crew made a forced landing in Sweden where all survived. They torched the aircraft as best they could, but the remains of the Lancaster are there to this day. The difficulty is the decals, I can do up the artwork but would need references to base it on. After sitting out for decades, and the crews attempts to destroy the aircraft there is not too much to go on for the nose art. Internet searches just come up with recent photos. Are there any books out there, or archive images of this aircraft that my fellow modellers know of? Cheers, and thanks, Hoops
  5. This build was done in honor of the 70th anniversary of 617 squadron. Recently finished up the 1/72 Hasegawa Tornado. It was brought to my attention that the missiles I used for "Sea Eagles" are in fact NOT Sea Eagles, but a similar weapon. I will eventually pull these off and modify them to look more like the real thing, but for now "close enough for government work" will suffice. The kit was mostly OOB with markings from modeldecal. As this was a german boxing, I had to pull the skyshadow and BOZ pods from other kits. Wing-sweep bladders were made from tamiya tape. I added probe covers using sheet styrene. The RBF tags and intake covers are painted tinfoil. I hope you guys enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoyed building it! Thanks for looking, comments and criticisms welcome! Next I will be building the Revell 1/72 Dambusters Lancaster to set opposite of it!
