  1. A while ago I floated the idea of doing a Supermarine Seafire for this GB and with my entry in the 60s NATO Vs Warpac GB almost finished I got bored waiting for paint to dry and rather than touch any of the many stalled projects littering the peripheries of the workbench decided, aided in no small part by a pile of Seafire references lying close to hand and being glanced through as bedtime reading, to start something new NN460 H6-Z features as a profile in a couple of my books and they seem to agree for the most part with a couple of minor differences in the details. Looks nice doesn't it? Think I'll have a crack at building it with this; With only a month and a half remaining of the GB I'm unlikely to finish it given my slow speed of typical progress but sod it, here we are now, a new challenge
  2. Right gang, after much dithering I've finally come to a decision, the Tamiya Bristol Beaufighter will be my subject for this GB. I've two kits in the stash, one a Mk. X and the other a Mk. VI, what I want to produce is a Mk.Ic so that will take some minor converting. There's a story I'll share later that has served as inspiration for this one but it also adds another type to the range of subjects we have within this GB.
  3. Anyone remember this one from the Lightning GB? http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234968483-early-airfix-48th-lightnings/ Poor thing has been lingering at one corner of the bench while other projects were completed but a determination to finish off various stalled models this year seen her get some attention lately. Been working on the seat that comes with the Cutting Edge cockpit set. Some base coats of Humbrol enamels got it to here; Then plenty dry brushing and detail painting, along with the addition of fuse wire handles got this; Once this is installed it'll be time to sort out the undercarriage legs.
  4. Picked up this kit from my local model shop (so good to be able to say this) on Monday after work and somehow seem to have started it already. No photos to show yet but here's some initial observations; The kit is well moulded and the cockpit in particular looks packed full of detail. Most parts I've worked on so far fit together well with one exception - the three-part wing slipper tanks need far too much work to get even roughly together and are taking a lot of filler to smooth up the joins. The ejector seats come with two optional squab parts - one with belts moulded on and the other plain to make fitting pilots easier. Unfortunately, however, there is only one pilot figure included. After the issues with canopies in recent Airfix kits I was delighted to see all the clear parts were well moulded and without blemish or flaw. There is, however, a short shot in one of the ejector seat parts, 16, that wasn't restricted to my kit alone. This means one side of the head box isn't properly formed. Easy enough to fix but worth watching out for. Once I've had a chance to take pictures will share them with everyone.
  5. I've been in two minds about starting a thread for this GB but an event earlier today has inspired me to go ahead. Please bear with me for a moment if you want to know the background to my choice, otherwise I'll cut a story short and (spoiler alert!) say look to the end of the next paragraph. A vague relative passed away recently in unfortunate circumstances and my cousin phone this evening to let me know. During the conversation we were reminiscing about days passed and the stories once told that are all too often lost as another generation fades away. One such tale that came to my mind was one told to me by my grandmother; in 1939 my grandfather was ground-crew with 602 squadron and used to working on the Gloster Gauntlets when their first Spitfires were taken on charge. The sight and sound of these wonderful new machines clearly had an impact upon everyone during those worrying days for he wrote a letter home to my grandmother on the subject in which he said, "We're in with a chance lass". Thus I made sure the moment Airfix' new 48th scale Spitfire I kit with it's 602 Sqn. decal option hit the shelf of my local model shop it didn't sit there long. As with some many other Britmodellers I've a few ongoing projects scattered across my workbench at the moment that were supposed be cleared before starting anything new so there may be a short delay before progress occurs on this one.
  6. Right gang time I got this one underway. Excuse the vague topic title but I'm not yet firm on which of the various versions available within the kit I want to do. A case of too much choice. At the moment an 92 Sqn. F.2 is favourite but then there's the 56 Sqn. bird and decals avaiable for AFDS and LTF units as well... Anyway, while I dither here's some photos of what I've got; The kit. Rather lovely it is as well, along with this, which provides a comprehensive set of bits to furnish the pilot's workplace, Hopefully get some bench space cleared to crack on with this one by next weekend.
