  1. Su-25 Frogfoot interior 3D Decal (QD48249 for Zvezda) 1:48 Quinta Studios When Quinta’s innovative products first came to our attention, they caused quite a stir, as well they should. The replacement Instrument Panels and internal details are mind-boggling to look at, because we’re used to seeing simplified styrene instrument panels, or Photo-Etch Brass panels with either two layers of etch, or laminated parts that can be tricky to glue together, even though they are pre-painted for your ease. But decals? These aren’t your run-of-the-mill decals though, they’re 3D printed in many layers and colours on a flat carrier film, having as much in the way of elevation as is needed to complete a realistic panel printed in the correct colours, complete with shiny dial faces and metallic-effect hardware, and often including cushions and seat belts in the set. Each set arrives in a ziplok bag with a folded instruction booklet protecting the decals, which are also separately bagged, so they should reach you in good condition. The pictorial instructions are printed on glossy paper, and are shown in full colour as befits the awesomeness of the sets, showing exactly where each part should go on the actual model, so there’s no confusion due to the “pictures speak a thousand words” maxim. Additional hints and instructions are also included, marking out parts needing bases, kit parts that are used or replaced and other useful tips. The technical instructions in the text-based, giving additional tips to the new user about maximising adhesion and preventing lift at the edges by wicking in super glue. Although you are advised to use Super Glue (CA) to attach the decals to the surface permanently, preparation is much the same as your standard decal, but you will need to remove any raised detail that would be underneath the location depicted in the instructions, and some new parts will need small backing panels or bases on which to apply the decal. A slim piece of sheet styrene would perform that task, and painting the edges a matching colour should minimise its appearance or turn it completely invisible. This set is patterned for the new Zvezda Su-25 Frogfoot that has just reached the market. The set comprises two sheets of decals, containing a pair of sidewalls with additional parts added to give it more relief, and here the first instruction step shows you how to create the stand-off parts own backing by soaking the decal paper in super glue (CA) and cutting it to size. A pair of decals are joined back-to-back and set in the corner of the windscreen with another flat decal just under it, then the instrument panel, side consoles and the rear bulkhead are glued in place with a number of additional levers and decals added along the way. The seat needs a little ground off one part and the corners built up with some filler, and the cushion ground off the headbox before the cushion decals, seatbelts, leg-restraints and stencils are added to create a highly realistic-looking seat. The base of the HUD is given a decal front and the projection lens is depicted by a green disc that appears to glow green, and the rudder pedals receive textured surfaces. This is a review for the complete set, but the set is also available as the instrument panels only, and the seat and other cockpit details, as you can see from the links below. Conclusion The detail on the parts is incredible as is usual with Quinta products, even down to the infinitesimal switches and impressive crispness of the set. This cockpit really needs a crystal-clear or opened canopy to show off the details, which the kit supplies along with an access ladder. Very highly recommended. 2. Remove Before Flight Tags White/Black (3DL48051 & 52) 1:48 Eduard SPACE Eduard have joined the 3D printed decal revolution with their SPACE range, and we’re becoming used to them producing their instrument panel sets, which are great by the way. I’ve used a set recently and they’re as good in use as they look on the decal paper, and now we have new sets of Remove Before Flight (RBF) tags in two flavours with white or black writing on a standard red tag. As usual with Eduard's Photo-Etch (PE), SPACE and Mask sets, they arrive in a flat resealable package with appropriate branding, a white backing card protecting the contents and the instructions that are sandwiched between. Each sheet contains 38 tags that are approximately 17mm x 2mm, and are printed in red, with inset “Remove Before Flight” text in white or black, depending on which set you’re looking at. There are eight types, all differing very subtly in terms of text size and placement apart from number 8, which has text printed on the rear too. Those were the ones I used to test them out, mainly so I could see how the text looked. It looks great. In use they’re very simple and you just cut one out and place it in water for a few seconds until you can remove the tag from the backing paper. I dabbed the decals on kitchen roll to remove excess moisture, then crinkled them a little in my hands. The end result is very realistic due to the thickness, the manner in which the material flexes, and the silvery ring on the top edge that finishes the look. Conclusion A very realistic-looking set of RBF tags that will give your models an extra degree of authenticity when you’re depicting your model on the ground and at rest. Very highly recommended. 3. Tempest Mk.V, Bf.109G-2, Mi-24V 3D SPACE Cockpit Sets (3DL48023 & 3DL48022 for Eduard & 3DL48001 for Zvezda) 1:48 Eduard SPACE Eduard’s new line of 3D Printed instrument panels with Photo-Etch (PE) accessories is expanding rapidly, and they are ideal to use instead of either the kit parts or traditional PE. Eduard's new SPACE sets arrive in a flat resealable package, with different branding and a white backing card protecting the contents and the instructions that are wrapped around. Tempest Mk.V SPACE 3D Printed Cockpit Set (3DL48023 for Eduard) The 3D Printed sheet contains a brand-new faceted instrument panel with glossy dial faces plus a number of small parts, details for the side consoles, and a new compass face. The PE sheet has a set of four-point seatbelts; a trigger for the control column and new rudder pedals. Bf.109G-2 SPACE 3D Printed Cockpit Set (3DL48022 for Eduard) The 3D Printed sheet contains a brand-new multi-layered instrument panel with glossy dial faces plus a number additional panels with PE supports, details for the side walls and floor instruments, and other small parts. The PE set has a set of four-point seatbelts; rudder pedals; trim-wheel details; sidewall parts; canopy interior and opener stay, plus a small aerial with base for under the fuselage. Mi-24V SPACE 3D Printed Cockpit Set (3DL48091 for Zvezda) The large 3D Printed sheet contains a brand-new multi-part instrument panel with glossy dial faces for both crew, plus a choice of screens that are inset into the panel, details for the large side consoles and panels, and quilted insulation panels for inside the canopy and elsewhere. The PE sheet has a set of four-point seatbelts and back cushions for the two crew; anti-torque pedals; cages around important instrument panels; replacement HUD for which you’ll need to source a piece of clear acetate to cut to the shape of the template, and windscreen wipers for both crew. Conclusion 3D Printed panels are very impressive, and Eduard’s multi-media approach really lends itself to these WWII birds especially, so the resulting panels are believable, simple to apply and realistic when finished, backed up by the PE extras that give you a little more depth around the rest of the cockpit. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  4. Tornado GR.4 Update Sets (for Italeri) 1:32 Eduard SPACE, Masks & Photo-Etch Italeri have taken the mantle from Revell for the best Tornado in 1:32, which is kind of funny, as the reverse is true of the 1:48 kits, which seems fair. Eduard's new range of sets are here to improve on the kit detail in the usual modular manner, now with the addition of the new 3D printed SPACE range. Get what you want for the areas you would like to be more of a focal point. As usual with Eduard's Photo-Etch (PE), SPACE and Mask sets, they arrive in a flat resealable package, with a white backing card protecting the contents and the instructions that are sandwiched between. SPACE Interior (3DL32001) One sheet of 3D Printed decals and one nickel-plated fret of PE are included to give you the best of both worlds in terms of detail and structure. A complete set of new layered instrument panels and side consoles are the primary parts on the 3D printed sheet, with two complete sets of seatbelts for the crew; equipment boxes and clipboard slots; coaming instrumentation, knobs and switches also supplied. Interior Set (33274) Two frets are included, both nickel plated and pre-painted. A complete set of new layered instrument panels and side consoles are the primary parts on the painted set, including the equipment boxes on the coamings and some ejection seat details also supplied. Seatbelts STEEL (33275) These belts are Photo-Etch (PE) steel, and because of their strength they can be etched from thinner material, which improves realism and flexibility in one hit. Coupled with the new painting method that adds perceived extra depth to the buckles and other furniture by shading, they are more realistic looking and will drape better than regular brass PE. As well as the two sets of crew belts, you also get a set of leg straps that pull the pilots’ legs in to prevent flail injury in case of an ejection. Exterior (32462) This larger bare brass set contains upgrades to the air-brakes and their bays, which receive a comprehensive improvement, raised panels and strakes in the intake trunking, detail in the small equipment bay and a substantial outfitting of the spoilers with new detailed skins that require a little thinning of those areas of the kit. Undercarriage (32982) This set comprises a large bare brass fret, and a smaller nickel-plated fret of pre-painted PE to give you the best of both worlds in terms of detail and structure. The bays are decked out with copious amounts of detail including skins for the walls, detail for ribs, and equipment boxes, which is where the pre-painted parts come in handy. In addition, there are some small details for the landing gear struts, and a few parts for some of the bay doors to raise the level of detail. Masks (JX269) Supplied on a sheet of yellow kabuki tape, these pre-cut masks supply you with a full set of masks for the canopy, with compound curved handled by using frame hugging masks, while the highly curved gaps are in-filled with either liquid mask or offcuts from the background tape. In addition, you get a set of small masks for some of the other clear parts around the airframe. Masks Tface (JX270) Supplied on two sheets of yellow kabuki tape, these pre-cut masks supply you with everything above, but also give you another set of canopy masks tailored to fit the interior of the glazing so that you can paint the interior and give your model that extra bit of depth and realism. Conclusion That’s a LOT of detail, and the prices are attractive, although some of the sets are out of stock right this minute. It’s a big kit, and large expanses of plastic is going to make it important to fill in the detail gaps left by Italeri. Choose which ones you want from the available list. Highly recommended.
