  1. Okay you folks got me going crazy, or is it just the heat in here? Anyway, a second coming of a group build-build that never started. An American Classic indeed. Compared to an 1:72 scale model, it's like Texas vs. Rhode Island. Well not that much, but much bigger (1,5^3 = 3.375) anyway. The sprues back then still in their bags. It is probably the first and only kit so far that I've washed the sprues, never found any harm with that but these felt so greasy I decided to go the extra mile with it. But then I never dared to actually start building it! I still plan to decorate her as "Marsha Sue". A plane, whose pic is in a book I got when I was probably ten years old! It's also a plane whose details match the Monogram kit 100%. Read more of her here if interested 🙂. Oh, one thing I don't know yet for sure is whether I want to decorate her with the red CBW colours or not . I like the all-grey looks, a lot. V-P
  2. The thread name hints at a great book by Mr. Ron Mackay. It was the first book I bought about the 381st BG and Station 167, named Ridgewell Airfield by the RAF. It has a very, very lively following at the fb group of the RAFCA - Ridgewell Airfield Commemorative Association - that runs the museum at the airfield's old hospital barracks. I've been a member of the association since the previous STGB! I have promised to build a pair of Revell 1:72 G:s, which I intend to keep, but there's also something out of the ordinary. In the D-Day 75th GB managed to start an Academy G kit and as I tried to "improve" the kit wings, I ruined them... the fuselage was once nearly complete, but in a moment of frustration I disassembled it nearly completely. It was this " close to ending up in trash can! Did I learn anything? NO! In the Bomber/Strike/Ground attack GB I tried to "improve" a Hasegawa G kit fuselage, and... ruined it too 😒. Has the trash can been close? You bet it has! But, and there's ALWAYS the "but": They say an Academy fuselage is happy to accept a pair of Hasegawa wings Let's see what happens... V-P
  3. The first build thread, probably the last to finish! For one that's used to the size of 1:72 kits... ...this is huge, 3.375 times larger! This will be my subject for the build. More about it later! Edit: A few more things: I have the Eduard mask set and must now go shopping for some Kits-World decal sets. The model will most likely be painted with Tamiya kili-kalis (spray cans) like I did the Matchbox B-17G. V-P
  4. I will build a WW2 four engine bomber used by the Allies. To be continued... a lot later, but. V-P
  5. Ok, continuing with an old and slow, very untypical of me build originating in the cold wild world WIP:s and then moving into the cover of the 2020 Stranger in Town GB, and then because it was way under 25% limit it got a new start in They Also Serve GB... Here comes the Ridgewell Celebrity again. Maybe I get her finished this time? Here she goes anyway...
  6. Now what does that mean? Let me explain by first quoting from the GB Chat: Wez: "8. The onus will be on the modeller to provide evidence that their subject is in keeping with the rules (e.g. vppelt68 would have to provide the evidence substantiating his proposed Fortress used for the repatriation of PoW's)." Moi: Wez is this good enough evidence? This link leads us to a German museum exhibition about Operation Revival and shows a 535th BS of the 381st BG B-17 MS*I (also marked as MS*S) "Crack-A-Dawn". We do know the museum historians can cut corners when choosing pictures and film material, unlike we modellers , but I keep digging for more proof... Wez: This is just the sort of evidence needed, I'm not expecting people to go rummaging through the national archives, just something that backs up their choice of subject. I'll add your name to the list. END QUOTE. I do have that "Crack-A-Dawn" as a back-up-plan, but also I will try to find proof of a specific 532nd Bomb Squadron aircraft of the same Bomb Group, to be built in this GB using the excellent Airfix recent tool kit. The 532nd BS squadron code in the fuselage? Of course it was VE! V-P
  7. Edit 1.4.: Hello! I started this build as a waist window conversion only, in "regular" aircraft modelling section. Giorgio and Enzo were kind to allow me to continue the build within a Group Build theme. "Strangers In Town" indeed were the first American Bombardment Groups when the "Friendly Invasion" began. The local people were all not too enthusiastic about the Yanks, for three reasons: "They were overpaid, oversexed and over here". End edit . V-P Could I do that? Would it be too difficult for a clumsy, regular kit builder like me? That's what I was thinking thursday night, two days ago. During the friday I decided to try that. Here's where we start. The newish Airfix B-17G staggered waist fuselage halves. Port will be untouched but acts as a template for the starboard modification, which I believe was close enough to a mirror image in the prototype. I drew the new opening to the inside of the fuselage. Airfix has been kind to supply the framework which helped tremendously in locating it. Then I drilled 0,5mm holes in the corners. The vertical cuts I made starting with a hobby saw and finished near corners with a knife. The horizontal cuts were all knife made. Voilá the crude new waist gun position opening is there! The removed fuselage piece is already cemented from upper, long horizontal edge and lower corners, with a thin styrene patch support on the inside. That was yesterday, when I also applied a good layer of putty on the old window. The new one is being trimmed to its shape. I needed to add some strips of styrene here and there. Some kind of success! There's a see-through opening now and the old window position looks neat too. I may add a dab of filler here and there, but nothing major is needed, please remember my regular level of model building... Here you see the waist window dry fitted in place. It's lost all of its attachment "lips" from the inside but is surprisingly tight. I was reminded at a B-17 fb group that most of the unstaggered G:s carried three panel waist windows. I intend to take care of that by just masking and painting the frames on Best regards, V-P
  8. I attempt to build the centerpiece of this Airfix mega-set, which is probably the largest model kit/set I've ever bought (at 45 GBP, a bargain imo) The Cushman Scooter can be seen, if looked very closely, at center left, between the bomb and fuel trucks! Now, I wish everyone here at Britmodeller and reading this one, Merry Christmas! May Santa bring us a lot or rattling presents! V-P
  9. I don´t usually dare to do RFI- posts outside the comfort of the GB section, but this time I thought maybe quantity * size > requirements for quality 🤭. So here are my builds from the recently ended B-17 STGB at this forum, of course. I´m halfway building a B-17G from each four squadrons of the 381st Bomb Group and I hope the second half will be done next summer in the GB section, where else? I first built a Revell B-17G kit, externally out of the box but adding some interior details that were never to be seen again after the fuselage was buttoned up. You live and you learn. She´s the rather well known B-17G-35-BO 42-32025 "DREAMBABY" from the 533rd Bomb Squadron. Decals by Revell and Kits-World. The plane name is hand painted, pin-up chick comes from Little Miss Mischief and was used as a stand-in as good enough pic for trying to depict the correct one didn´t come up though I looked for it. The kit was brush painted with Humbrol enamels. EDIT: I forgot to mention, that she does indeed carry my initials 😘 As there was time left in the GB I decided to try build another one, so I bought an Airfix new tool B-17G kit. She´s a somewhat freelanced representation of B-17G-70-BO 43-37852 "Betty Lou" from the 534th BS. Decals again a combination of kit supplied and Kits-World. The plane name again was hand painted as there´s a good pic of the plane nose with one of her crews. The rear fuselage appearance though is based on a civilized guess only. This kit was also brush painted with Humbrol enamels. Actually, all my kits are. Best regards, V-P
  10. Look what I just today bought, thanks to my lovely wife and her given me gift card to my LHS... Hohum, three and half weeks to go, and the DREAMBABY (resting on boxtop) needs to be finished too . V-P
  11. Why not build a B-17 with own initials, all of us? No can do, you say . Yes I can! Plans for my build have been discussed here in the WW2 Aircraft- section: Yes, she´s a 100+ mission survivor (until being scrapped) and a very interesting one to paint! I will travel to London on wednesday and stay there until sunday. I´ll pick the decals and masks I´ll need for her from Hannants, when I visit the RAF Museum nearby, so nothing to show you here yet, except the modified Revell "combat box": I was given this kit as a birthday present a year ago. It´s been a long wait... Best regards, V-P
