Several 357th FG P-51Ds from the first two Inglewood-built batches (NA-109 c/n 26896...28485 or P-51D-5NA 44-13253...14052 and P-51D-10NA 44-14053...14852) are commonly shown as camouflaged in OD/NG - sometimes even with white identification stripes across the wings. The best known examples are: 4-13691 PassionWagon, 4-14709 MissouriArmada and 4-14798 ButchBaby from the 362nd FS 4-13518 HorsesItch, 4-13714 DesertRat, 4-13717 ReluctantRebel and 4-14450 OldCrow from the 363rd FS 4-13318 Frenesi and 4-14507 Tangerine from the 364th FS First question is whether were they (and 1588 other D-5 & 10NA a/c) factory-painted in OD/NG like most of the P-51B/Cs or have all the teardrop-Mustangs for the USAAF left the factory in NMF ? If it was a factory finish then everything is clear, but if they were delivered in NMF and matt painting was the 357th FG tactical "therapy" applied in the UK it seems hard to believe that original US colours were applied there. For the topsides the RAF Dark Green (just a little bit greenish than OD, but far from from the US Medium Green) looks more probable, but what about the undersides? If the colour was so dark that white stripes were used (and not black ones like on the NMF P-51D wings) was it Ocean Grey, Dark Sea Grey or Extra Dark Sea Grey? IIRC all three were substituted with FS36118 NG on the US-built aircraft destined for Britain. The contrast of white stripes on Sea Grey Medium seems too weak... Cheers Michael

P-51D Mustang 357th FG 364th FS Major Richard Peterson 1944 Finished this one yesterday. I've had her on the go for a few weeks as a fill in build between other builds. I've used the old Hasegawa kit which I picked up for £2. This build has been a used as a try out for a few different things, so it not one of my best. Thanks for looking

P-51B 'Old Crow' Clarence E. "Bud" Anderson This is Bud's first Mustang that he received upon arrival in the UK replacing the P-39s that the Group left behind in the US. You will notice the white nose and spinner. This was just before the 357th adopted the yellow and red checker-board and yellow and red striped spinner that was so characteristic of the Fighter Group. This is the 'Old Crow' boxing of the Academy kit, although I didn't use the kit decals as they was for a later 'Old Crow' Instead I used one of the options from one of Eagle Strikes 357th sets. Right on with the photos. I have included photos taken on a blue background and identical shots taken on a white background. Please tell me which ones you prefer when you comment on the build. Thanks. Thanks for looking, as per usual your comments are welcome.
