  1. Hi folks, After the Flesh Hound I painted one of the angels - these are probably the reason I bought the box - it's crazy that you can have something so big and airborne suspended on a skinny bit of plastic scrollwork. Latest bit of this project is the Flesh Hound of Khorne: I've been doing mainly figure modelling since we moved house - my office (and modelling room) is really too cold with the window open at night to paint comfortably. So instead I've been either cleaning up parts or painting things I'd already primed while sat in front of the TV. I posted some of this in another work-in-progress thread, but I've just finished five of the rank-and-file (or perhaps unruly mob) Chaos infantry from Games Workshop's new Age of Sigmar box. Lots of new things to try on these - painting big areas of skin, the furry boots and cuffs, lacquered armour etc. I also highlighted the metals with Vallejo Liquid Gold + Silver, which are surprisingly bright and bling-ey. I think after this I might be allowed to paint one of the characters or something else a bit less repetitive as a break. Was fun though, and they've only taken a week and a bit of evenings which for me is pretty quick. I think they came out well although I ought to try harder with the helmets, and this guy's eyes are a bit suspect: The reason I bought the box (which initially looked a bit off in pictures) was that I got a free figure with the GW magazine (well, bought the magazine for the figure...) and thought it was fun to paint and a bit of a change. Doing more of the same seemed like a good idea Cheers, Will
  2. Hi all, I'm never sure where to post figures - I've had a thread in the Figures subforum but it looks like finished ones should be here? Anyway, I've been painting a bunch of figures from the recent Games Workshop Age of Sigmar box. As usual the starter set is quite keenly priced for what you get, the individual figures and squads are eye-wateringly expensive though. In reverse order of completion, here are: Khorgos Khul, Mighty Lord of Khorne (chief bad guy) Stormcast Eternal Prosecutor (flying hammer-chucking goodie) Five Bloodreavers (junior bad guys) Stormcast Eternal Liberator (basic goodie grunt) I also did a couple of posed shots with things I painted last year, I want to do another soon with all the Chaos chaps together. It's been a fun way to spend winter but I need a break from all the squinting now! Cheers, Will
  3. Hey guys, i would like to show you my first at 2016 and the very first figure I have always loved Warhammer (does not matter if "classic" or 40k) and these 28mm figures are quite cute little gems (the cast is amazingly well done by Citadel). And because i love wolves, my favourite unit are the Space Wolves Well, here is the first of them - i have not used any Warhammer rules for painting, just painted it as i like (speaking about colour scheme and weapon chose) So here is the grey hunter, armed with plasma pistol and bolt pistol. I have tried some new techniques to me and obviously have a lot to learn yet But i had A LOT of fun! And one for the size comparing Thanks for watching guys and hopefuly i ll add more figures in better quality over times
  4. Hi folks, I'm never quite sure where to post my non-Sci-Fi figure stuff. I put the work-in-progress in the Figures subforum, but then there are separate Figure and Ready for Inspection subforums here as well. Not that it really matters! Here are some recently-released Games Workshop ghosts. I painted them because I liked all the movement, and I wanted to try some ideas for painting glowing ethereal stuff which I could try on some of their larger undead models. These "Spirit Hosts" are on 40mm bases and each base is supposed to represent a swarm of ghostly foes. The basic colours are an airbrushed mix of Tamiya Acrylics, going for a sort of glow-in-the-dark look. I started with a mid green and worked up to pure yellow on the insides of the ghosts, and where they emerge from the skeletons. My initial plan was to paint them inside-out, and put shadows on all the raised parts, but when I tried it I didn't like the look. I repainted the test model and went with edge highlights over the airbrushed base, and then glazes over everything to tie it together. The highlights are a bit sloppy (done in front of the telly) but the glazes help smooth them out. I also varied the glazes from yellow in the bright spots, through green in the middles, to blue on the thin bits like hands and faces. All the gravestones were painted with Citadel paints under a magnifier. I sealed everything with Alclad Klear Flat (so great!) and then treated the blades with various metallics, a teal-black wash, and a rub with AK Dark Steel graphite. I think they've come up quite well, and they made a nice break from other things I've been working on. Better get on and finish that tank now! Cheers, Will
  5. Hi folks, I've been painting these newish plastic Spirit Host figures as a diversion between other things. It's not going entirely to plan but I'm starting to get them into some kind of shape and I think I can see my way to the end now They're quite fiddly to assemble - lots of thin bits all standing up in 3D - and I ended up giving up on some of the seams and things after two rounds of cleanup and primer, so they're not the tidiest minis ever... I started off airbrushing them with a mixture of Tamiya acrylics - I think mainly IJN Cockpit Green and Desert Yellow, lightened and warmed with Flat White and Flat Yellow as they got brighter. The idea was to have a bright light source where the tail of the middle ghost is bursting out of the tortured skeleton (!) and then some internal light for the body of each ghost as well. I was going to try and paint highlights "inside-out" so that it looked like the ghosts glowed from the inside but my attempt went quite badly and I ended up trying something different. This is a mixture of a couple of loose edge highlights and some yellow-green glazes over the airbrushed shading: My wife thinks they should be teal-white rather than green-yellow as they look a bit cabbagey, but I wanted something with a hint of "glow in the dark" to it. I need to clean these up a bit more under a magnifier and repaint the failed one, then follow the same steps on the other two bases. I also need to figure out what to do with the blades. Cheers, Will
  6. Hi folks, After a bit more messing around this morning I finally got this chap finished and managed to take some pictures before the light fell. He's a treeman from the recently-released Games Workshop plastic kit and is about 14cm tall. I'm still quite surprised that it's possible to make something like this in plastic, but they are generally very good at organic stuff. I converted the model a little using parts from all three versions. I rebuilt a right hand into a left so I didn't have to use the enormous left hand supplied, and used the long plaited beard as a pigtail. I also removed the bottom of his jaw so that the face looks more like a nut and less like a mask from Princess Mononoke. I tidied up the changes with epoxy putty and CA. He's all brush painted with Citadel paints except for varnish, the tendrils (where I airbrushed the blends) and an initial application of "Flesh Wash" to the recesses, also using the AB for ease of access. After the basic paint job was done and sealed I weathered him with enamels and a small amount of pigment - mainly AK and MIG stuff. The flat coat is Alclad Klear Flat, and the gold paint is Vallejo Liquid Gold which I haven't used before, and I think is excellent! I added a layer of moss mixed from ground foam, green paint and leftover "scenic cement" (dilute PVA). A bit scary initially but when toned down with enamels and drybrushed with some ludicrously bright green I think it's pretty effective. I was amused to discover just how many bottles and jars went into this! There's a WIP thread here - thanks to everyone who commented while it was going on, and thanks for having a look here too! I really enjoyed this one, sometimes a bit of messy painting is very good for the soul Cheers, Will
  7. Hi folks, I'm supposed to be building some other stuff over the next two months, but I couldn't resist putting this chap together this week: (click to embiggen) As usual for the Games Workshop figures, the fit is great and the level of layered detail is bordering on the ridiculous - I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to paint him. The kit builds three versions, I mixed the legs and left arm from "Durthu", the right arm and staff from "Ancient Treeman" and the left hand launching the triffid-like stingers is from "Treeman". I had to convert the provided right hand into a left hand by removing all the fingers and thumb and rebuilding it all the other way around! Managed to cut my own finger while slicing off one of his, ironically. All the official versions use the same left hand which is bigger and looks like a collection of knives, so I'm quite glad I opted for something different here. I also shortened the beard and removed the plaited section to use as a pigtail, and built a head using the top half of Durthu's and the bottom of the ancient treeman's. I didn't really like the Princess Mononoke-style mask faces and I think what I ended up with looks better, though it's a bit clunky compared to the kit parts. So I have a giant walking tree doing rather an anime-styled attack pose. Most of the paint jobs I've seen of this chap have been too clean (IMO) and I want something with more mess and texture. I already scratched up some of the bark, and I think I'm going to approach the paint by airbrushing inks on the inner "heartwood" areas and then block in the bark and drybrush it like mad. Expect progress to be erratic, there's too many models on the go at the moment... Cheers, Will
