  1. This is one of two entries for this GB. The engineering and packaging of Forces of Valor kits reminds me of Dragon and Trumpeter. As to how good the kits are ... that's another matter. They should at least be easy to build, but accuracy remains to be seen. I may complete this in a "Panzer Grey" w/disruptive stripes scheme included in the Italeri (ESCI) kit that I am also building.
  2. Hello Chaps, After building my Airfix 1/72 Vickers Wellington B.III and my Revell GmbH 1/72 Handley Page Halifax B.III, I decided that I wanted to put them on a display base to show them off, and, include the Airfix Bomber Re-Supply set. So, I bought the kit and did just that, but was disappointed that they don't include figures and Airfix have discontinued making their 1/72 RAF Personnel kit. But that said, a good modeling buddy from the UK sent me a set of ICM 1/72 scale RAF figures. This post just covers the Bomber Re-Supply set...still building the base and have yet to begin the figures. Anyway, this was my first time attempting anything other than aircraft, which I have built since beginning modeling in 2014, so take that on board and go easy on me I have to say though, I really did enjoy building and painting this kit, the only problems with it were the maintenance gantry had a section of pole missing, due to it being a "short shot"- "non-fill" during the molding process, and, the box art shows both a Bedford MWD and MWC, so from that image, you're fooled into believing you get both vehicles: you can only build one or the other....then as mentioned above...no figures. Okay enough waffling, here is the link to my Facebook photo album of all the items that come with this kit, hope you like! https://www.facebook.com/pg/InternationalBritishModeler/photos/?tab=album&album_id=327831264721393 And, if you'd like to see my Build Introduction, Build Updates and Final Reveal build series videos for this kit, here is the links to those, too: Thanks in advance for any comments left and for watching any of the videos, much appreciated. If you have a YouTube channel and I'm not subscribed to you, then subscribe to my channel and leave a comment below the video telling me that you did so and you're from "Britmodeller" and I'll subscribe to you, too! Happy modeling!! Cheers, Martin 🍺 🍺
  3. Hello Chaps, This is a second build that I did to join my Revell 1/72 Handley Page Halifax B.III for the "Bomber Command Buddy Build" that I hosted both on Facebook and YouTube. I decided to not be tempted by the new Wellington kit by Airfix, although it is a beautiful kit, and decided I'd try my best at making this oldie look reasonable. The plastic is really strange, very hard, tough black plastic that doesn't react well with Tamiya Thin cement. Very hard to cut with a craft knife, almost like a glass filled nylon rather than a styrene plastic. I wanted to make it look different than out of the box, so I attempted scratch-building a bomb bay for it. To do this, I cut out two bomb bay doors, one from each fuselage half. I then split these into two, down the length, so that I had 2 not so deep doors. I then cut these 4 pieces into 6 sections, making 24 sections of bomb bay doors. This is because the Wellington has 3 bomb bay compartments with 4 rows of 6 doors either side of them. After that was done, I needed to scratch build the bomb bay itself, which I did by using .040" white styrene card, building a floor with the two end bulkheads then two separator ribs to create the three compartments. I didn't bother cutting out the walls to create a deodectic framework, that would have taken forever, but I'm okay with that, because it has made the finished model look completely different with the bomb bay and bombs addition. I also scratch built an instrument panel and two bulkheads within the cockpit, which you cannot see, because the clear parts in this old kit were yellowed, very thick, not clear and with a rough texture. I polished the clear parts as best I could, but it didn't make much difference, if any. I also scratch-built the pitot tube, some support struts within the wheel bays, the UHF antenna beneath the rear end fuselage, the rudder limiters, and I modified the propeller assemblies so that they were solid and would spin freely, too. I scratch-built the wing-tip navigation lights, by cutting the leading edge corners out, painting the portside red and the starboard side green, sealing the paint with a gloss clear coat, then when that was dry, I glued in two sections of clear sprue . When the glue was set solid, I filed the lights to blend with the form of the wings, then polished them to make them clear again. I added the front and tail end white lights that you can see beneath each of the gun turret areas, flattened the wheels to make them look weighted, then lastly, added the antenna mounting point on the front of the vertical stabilizer, followed by the two antenna cables made from .010" fine black EZ-Line. After finishing the model, rushed because of a time limit with the buddy build, I'd wished I had cut out a section underneath the portside wing to create the double lensed landing lights that don't come with the kit, along with create the access area beneath the front end of the fuselage and added a crew ladder, too. Ha well, never mind, another time. The decals were dark yellow when I opened the box and I thought that they'd never work, being 59 yrs old. So, I left them in a window of the house that gets the most sunshine, for two weeks, to help bleach them. It worked, it paled the yellow down and following that, I sealed the decals with Testors Decal Bond and allowed that to set for 24 hrs. I was nervous when I dropped the first roundel into water, expecting it to crumble, as I have experienced that before with old decals, but, they remained intact, and lo and behold, they slid from the backing paper and went down...amazing!! I painted the model using my preferred go to paints: Model Master acrylics, applied weathering using oils thinned down with odorless mineral spirits, I also used acrylic washes and colored pencils, then sealed in with Model Master flat coat. If you like a challenge, like I do now and then, don't throw your old kits out, or give them away, attempt to make them better than straight out of the box! Okay, enough waffling, here she is...I'm happy with the result, hope you guys like her. 4. Hello Chaps, It's been quite a while since I posted on here, due to life and work, but today, I've finally got a little time to post something. This Revell of Germany kit is another great kit produced by them, engineered well, good quality molded parts, nice details, and everything goes together very well. I only required a little filler and that was at the joins of where the canopy and front nose end window fitted to the fuselage. Flash was very little if anything, ejector pin witness marks were kept away from visible surfaces and nothing was warped, but, exactly what you'd expect from a recent tooling from 2015. It's good value for money too, 257 parts in total for $34.67 from Hobbylinc.com. I built this model straight out of the box, the only addition being the two antenna cables that were made from .010" fine black EZ-Line. I bought mine from a local store that I had a $5.00 off coupon, so, less than $30.00 for me. Conclusion: Super kit, great price, highly recommended! Anyway, enough waffling, here are some photos, hope you like.... 5. Hello Chaps, Two days ago, I completed my latest "Hairy Stick" build- the Italeri 1/72 scale F-16 A/B NATO Falcon. This kit is discontinued and was tooled new in 1980, and in between was repackaged a few times with new box art, new parts and decals, but never new tooling. So, the tooling is 37 yrs old, but I have to say that it was pretty decent. The parts had nice fine recessed panel lines, a reasonably detailed cockpit that included two plain seats each within their own tub that had side consoles. Two instrument panels were included, but nothing else. I decided to dress up the cockpit a little, by adding 35 scratch-built parts (crude as they may be), plus adding 14 pieces of decals to the 4 side consoles and 1 to each instrument panel from my spares box. Scratch-built parts included the following: 4 pedals, 4 pedal mount brackets, 8 sections of seat-belt (4 to each seat), 2 ejector pull handles, 2 oxygen bottles (1 to each seat), 2 HUD side bracket mounts, 2 HUD lenses, 1 canopy actuator cylinder and 1 canopy actuator swing brace, 4 ejector seat guide rails (2 to each seat), 1 rear and 2 front wall sections around the Pilots seat and 1 upper wall section behind the Pilot's seat to locate the canopy actuator mechanism, and, 1 rear wall section behind the second seat. Decals were included for the two instrument panels but not for the 4 side consoles. The decals were very good- Cartograf, printed in Italy, with markings for 4 options- 2 single seat "A" version Falcons and 2 Two Seat "B" version Falcons. I chose to model a two seat version in the markings of a Royal Dutch Air Force 313th Sqn aircraft # J270. The kit went together pretty well with just small amounts of filler at wing to fuselage joints, nose to fuselage joint and vertical fin to fuselage joint. The undercarriage was rock solid for this scale of kit, so no concerns about it flexing and/or breaking. The kit also included some nice under-wing stores: 2 extra long range fuel tanks, 1 center-line fuselage fuel tank, 2 AIM 9 Sidewinder Missiles, 2 AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles (1 on each wing-tip) and 4 WCMD 420kg bombs. Overall, I had a lot of fun with this kit and it looks like a pretty decent representation of a F-16B. After building and brush painting 7 models since November 2016, it's time for a break to make a start on a man-cave at my new house so that I can begin to build larger kits and airbrush them again! I hope you enjoy the following photos, wherein the last one includes a US Quarter coin to give an idea of scale..... 6. Hello Chaps, This is my fourth "Hairy Stick" adventure that I completed in January 2017- again, this was a very basic kit by Matchbox from 1980 that has been in my stash untouched for a very long time. Upon opening the box, I found that the decals were missing along with the port-side air brake. I was fortunate to discover that a fellow modeling buddy had a spare set of decals for this kit that he kindly sent to me, the port-side air brake, I scratch built by using the starboard side air brake as a template and marking out the shape onto a molded part that had very similar surface geometry. The cockpit for this two-seater version was very basic- just two seats in a blank tub, so I decided to scratch-build 27 parts and added 15 sections of decals from my spares box to dress up the scratch-built instrument panels and the side-consoles. I scratch-built foot pedals and their support mounts, two joysticks, two instrument panels, seat-belts, ejector pull handles- 2 to each seat mounted at the front ends of the seat side panels, green display screens for front and rear IP's, the canopy actuator and its housing behind the Pilot seat. The exhausts were just two hollow tubes which I didn't like, so, I decided to make the inner afterburner tubes and thrust rings to dress those up a little and include the turbine fans in the rear of the tube. The inner tubes were created from spare bomb parts that I glued together then chopped off the nose ends. I then took spare 1/32 scale Eduard Me109 E-3 wheels and cut the center hubs out and the rings that were left were used as the thrust rings. The spoked hubs that I removed were used as the fan blades in the back end of the tubes. For an old basic kit, I had a lot of fun building it and adding the extra scratch-built items, crude as they may be.... If you'd like to see my "Build Update #1" YouTube video showing what did within the cockpit, here is the link to that: ...and if you'd like to see my "Final Reveal + rest of the build' video, then here is the link to that one: Thanks in advance for checking in and leaving any comments, much appreciated! Happy modeling, Cheers, Martin
  7. Hello Chaps, This is my third "Hairy Stick" adventure that I completed in December 2016- a very basic kit by Matchbox from 1973 that has been in my stash untouched for a very long time. Again, I was really concerned about the decals being so old and the fact that they had "yellowed", whether they would work or not, but, if I let them sit in warm water for a few minutes, I was able to carefully peel them from the backing paper, they wouldn't slide, but I was just happy that I got them to work! The cockpit for this two-seater trainer version was very basic- just two seats, so I decided to scratch-build two instrument panels, four side consoles, two joy-sticks, seat belts made from wine bottle foil and ejector pull handles for both seats. The canopy was one solid piece which wouldn't allow for displaying the model with the rear section of the canopy open, so, with a hot knife, I carefully separated the rear section from the front section, glued the front section in place, then scratch-built a canopy actuator for the rear section and displayed it in the open position.... If you'd like to see my YouTube build video for this vintage model, then here is the link to it: Thanks in advance for taking a butchers and for any comments made, much appreciated! Happy modeling! Cheers, Martin
  8. Hello Chaps, This is my second "Hairy Stick" adventure that I completed in November 2016- a very basic kit by Matchbox from 1976 that has been in my stash untouched for a very long time. I was really concerned about the decals being so old and the fact that they had "yellowed", whether they would work or not, but, if I let them sit in warm water for a few minutes, I was able to carefully peel them from the backing paper, they wouldn't slide, but beggars can't be choosers...I was just happy i got them to work! I'm not going to say anything about the kit itself, because it's no longer available and I'm just going to post my efforts with a very basic kit... If you'd like to see my YouTube build video for this model, here is the link to it: Thanks in advance for taking a gander and commenting, much appreciated! Happy modeling, Cheers, Martin
  9. Hello Chaps, Until my man-cave is setup in my new home, I cannot do any airbrushing and so my last 6 builds have been "old school" brushing with the "hairy sticks". I've decided to stick with 1/72 scale while using brushes because there is less surface area to cover compared to the 1/32 scale I prefer to build. This was my first adventure with the bristled wands that I completed in November, 2016- the HobbyBoss 1/72 Seahawk Mk.100/101. Not a bad little kit with decent tub details for this scale; I added seat belts made out of foil from the top of a wine bottle and the rest was OOB... If you'd like to see my YouTube build video, then here is the link to that: Thanks in advance for taking a look and commenting, much appreciated. In the meantime, happy modeling! Cheers, Martin
  10. Hello Chaps, It's been a while since I posted anything, but this is because my wife and I moved to a new home that we bought. With all the packing, moving, unpacking and settling in, time went by fast....6 months to be precise before I touched styrene again. Well, since the move, I still haven't found the time to create my new man-cave/modeling den in the basement, which means that airbrushing is a no go, and so, because I was getting severe withdrawals, I decided to try my hand at brush-painting some 1/72 scale kits in my stash. I chose to do 1/72 rather than my normal 1/32 or 1/48 scale for a good reason- if I screwed up with the "Hairy-Sticks", I wouldn't be too bothered about messing up a smaller and cheaper kit. Since November, I've managed to complete five 1/72 scale kits and one 1/144 scale kit and I have to say, I've had fun painting them the "old fashioned" way, I used Model Master acrylics and then oils for the weathering stage. So, I'd like to share the first of those 6 builds and apologize for not having/finding the time to post a build log prior to this RFI post. I hope you like it...I was happy with my "Hairy Stick" results: Although I much prefer to build the larger scale kits, purely for comfort on my aging eyes and much prefer to use an airbrush, I did have fun and this was a decent little kit. If you'd like to watch my YouTube video for this, then here is the link to that: Thanks in advance for any comments made, much appreciated! Cheers, Martin
