  6. Hi, Perhaps the biggest secondliner so far on mine shelves: Curtiss C-46 Commando. Model is made from Williams Brothers kit. Markings (nose arts are hand painted) are presenting machine which survived the war, was used in Pacific area and is now on display in Pima museum in US. I was searching for some interesting markings and was not successfull with this some years ago, when I was making this model. Just from curiosity I started to search in web yesterday and found very interesting set of photos of C46 from Burma, 1944-45, with yellow strip going across all windows, probably with red nose and many different nose arts. I made a post about in in WWII forum - the llink is there. Perhaps one day I will re-paint mine C46 to those markings. I am so impressed about it... So far - she looks like this: Comments welcome Cheers Jerzy-Wojtek

  12. September 1944 had already brought two cancelled missions for the 315th Troop Carrier Group at Spanhoe. Over 1,100 paratroops had arrived at the base on 1 September, for Operation Linnett II, but these left on the 3rd when the operation was cancelled. British Paratroops arrived on the 8th for Operation Comet, which was cancelled on 10 September. A number of these airborne operations were planned and cancelled during the summer of 1944. Linnett II’s objective was to capture the Meuse crossings. Comet was to take the Rhine crossings in the Arnhem/Wesel area, but was cancelled in favour of the larger Operation Market Garden. On the 16th, men of the 82nd Airborne Division arrived at Spanhoe, and the base was sealed again for Operation Market Garden, 17-25 September 1944. On the 17th two formations of 45 Dakotas in each formation successfully dropped their Paratroops south of Nijmegen for the loss of one Dakota. As soon as they returned to Spanhoe their American pararack fittings were replaced with British equipment. On the 18th, two formations of 27 aircraft departed with the 900 men of the 4th Parachute Brigade, who were dropped west of Arnhem. Two Dakotas were lost to flak and two more were damaged. Bad weather interfered with the third drop on the 21st. Two formations of 27 left with 720 men of the Polish Parachute Brigade. The first formation abandoned their mission due to foul weather. The second formation dropped their troops on the south bank of the Rhine, but the fierce opposition encountered resulted in the loss of six aircraft. Bad weather on the 22nd precluded operations, and the remainder of the Poles were dropped on the 23rd to join their colleagues. The final operation in support of Market Garden was on 26th September when 72 Dakotas took 334 British troops and 187,067lbs of combat equipment into an airstrip at Grave. By this time the failure of the operation was recognised and the withdrawal was underway. The last big operation of the war for the men of the 315th Troop Carrier Group at Spanhoe came on 24th March 1945, with the crossing of the Rhine. Most of the Troop Carrier Groups of the 9th Air Force had moved to France by this time, but the three Groups of the 52nd Troop Carrier Wing, which included the 315th, were still in England. This model represents 4A-F of the 310th Sqn. I sprayed and masked the squadron codes as I couldn't find suitable deals and the kit was missing the clear sprue so I had to improvise. I have a photo of this a/c in snowy conditions (probably late 44) and the invasion stripes are very grubby.

  14. I'd like to present the second of my two Defiant nightfighter builds using the new tool Airfix kit: For the build thread of both kits please see here. The kit goes together very well with few pitfalls for the unwary and none for the wary; as long as you test fit and know what you are sticking to what, where and why, it more or less builds itself. Mine is OOB apart from the addition of an aerial wire from EZ Line. Once again I've painted the wingtip navigation lights in red and green; in real life they were clear perspex covers for coloured lightbulbs but I am content to let the colours represent what they are. I had a hell of a time trying to get a subtly distressed effect for the paint finish and was about 20% successful at a guess, though the camera then decided to overlook much of the subtlety so it was a largely wasted effort, however it was a laugh if nothing else I used the kit decals for most of the national markings and stencils, but the fuselage roundels, codes and serials are from the Print Decals set for the Defiant - I don't really know what to say about these... they are thinner than the kit decals and had very little carrier film but apart from that I felt they were inferior in every other respect which is a sad look-out for a set of aftermarket decals. The 'red' of the roundels and serial has a strange Fuchsia tint to it which does not look good next to the slightly bricky-red of the Airfix decals which looks better to my eyes. The colour density and printing was also inferior to the kit decals though perhaps with that fuchsia tint that is for the best. I might have got a dud set, I certainly hope so, as there are some very nice options on the Print Scale sheet. Anyway enough, I am happy with the end result; here are the two kits together: Thanks for your attention gents Cheers, Stew Edit: nearly forgot; here is the real N3313

  19. Hello, With the arrival of the airbrush and compressor yesterday I've decided to take the plunge and build two kits at the same time. the two kits I'm building are the 1/100 Academy F-14 and the reboxed Italeri/Tamiya Jaguar GR-1, here is the usual box shots for the moment. Box Shot of both kits: Academy 1/100 F-14 Tomcat: Stand for the Tomcat: Sprue A: Sprue B: Tamiya/Italeri Jaguar GR-1: Sprue A: Sprue B: The Tomcat is going to be finished in White, and at the moment I'm unsure about the Jaguar, its either going to be in the Gulf War Colours or the Grey/Green scheme which it can also be built in! Thanks for Looking.
  20. Here is my latest completion, it is the Finemolds 1/72 Messerschmitt Me 410B-1/U4, well that's what it says on the box anyway. The colour profile of it in the Yellow Series book on the Me 410 states that it is a A-1/U4. Built mostly OOB but with replacement aerials and pitot made out of fuse wire, brass tube and guitar string. The gun barrel is the Finemolds turned brass version. The fit of the fuselage halves and the engine nacelles weren't up to Finemold's normal standards, in fact the fuselage halves looked like they had been mastered by 2 different people in 2 different factories and the engine nacelles are well known to be oversized. Painted using Mr Hobby paints which normally work very well but I had a bit of "orange peel" appear and had to respray some parts. Decals are a mix of the kit's and from the spares box to make up the serial number and the small codes. This model took quite a long time to complete as my enthusiasm for it would wane at every step so it had many visits to the shelf of doom but I got there in the end. I didn't use my normal method for masking the canopy so it's a bit rough and the aerial is at an odd angle where it joins the fin but I just wanted to get it finished finally.
  21. Here is my first completion of 2015, the 1/72 Revell Me 262 B-1a/U1 made OOB. I used the kit decals but deviated from the kit colour instructions and chose to go with the profile in the Classic Colours book, Nachtjager vol 2. This profile shows the wings and tailplane painted overall RLM 83. The kit had lots of sink marks on the engine nacelles and intakes and the canopy has some molding flaws. I had a vac form replacement but managed to ruin that so had to go with the kit part. I did cut the main undercarriage down by 2mm to try to get the characteristic tail sit of the real thing but it is still sitting too high for my liking Painted with a mix of acrylics from Polyscale (RLM22), Vajello (RLM76) and Mr Color for the RLM 75 and 83. The mottling was sprayed with with my Iwata CM-C+ at 2bar and went on first time without any need to respray. The rest of the colours were sprayed at 1bar. I had terrible trouble trying to get decent photos of this model, hopefully these are ok. Duncan B
  22. Next in the queue are these two, partly because having bought the first five volumes of the Luftwaffe Crash Archive I want to make a start on utilising the fabulous research therein. Tamiya Emil by jongwinnett, on Flickr Airfix Emil by jongwinnett, on Flickr So far actual modeling progress has been limited to a waft of Halfords finest primer. Coming next... by jongwinnett, on Flickr Ideally I would like, to do one as Boehm's E-3 which was the first Bf109 to come down in the UK. However, whilst I have most of the necessary decals, the White 4 edged red eludes me. I think Boehm's plane featured in one of the Cutting Edge decal sheets in 1/48, but I haven't found a source in 1/72. Suggestions welcome! I haven't decided on how to finish the other. I do have decals for Priller's E-3, but I would prefer to model another that came down in the Uk. I know nothing about German planes, having never built one before, but am I right in thinking that the E-3s were largely upgraded to E-4 standards, or is that nonsense? I haven't found another suitable prototype yet. But the research is half the fun.
  23. Hello all. I have just finished this little kit, the civvi Airfix Tiger Moth. It is a world apart form the old tool kit in just about every respect you can think of. The parts were crisply moulded, with no flash and virtually no seam lines on the parts. Some of the bits are incredibly fragile, but thankfully none broke during removal from runners or during handling. I was also lucky in that none pinged from the tweezers into the great unknown. I did have a few small issues though, all down to my hamfistedness. The fuselage did not close up when I glued it, despite it doing so during test fitting. I put the cabane struts on the wrong way round to start with (told you it was my fault!) but retrieved the situation before the glue set. Then I refitted them probably too quickly, and got them out of alignment. This then caused the top wing to skew a lot. Then I found the interplane struts were not long enough. This very nearly caused the kit to find its way into the bin of doom. Overnight, I was wondering how I was going to solve this situation, especially as the fitting for the main struts caused me some concern. There are small rectangular depressions for the fitment points, and on the struts themselves there are very fine points even smaller than the rectangles. I was surprised there were not location holes to match the pins. The solution was drastic. I slid one linked pair (with a dab of glue on the pins) into the rectangles, wrapped masking tape around the wing to trap them in place, then put a few spots of CA to lock them in place. Then lots more spots to make sure. A couple of hours later, I did the same for the other set. This helped get the wing alignment a bit more true. Rigging was EZ-Line into blind holes in the lower wing running through open holes in the top then tensioned and fixed with CA. I only put one set of control wires to the rudder, but not any to the elevators. I found the location points of the undercarriage and tail struts were very small and awkward to see, but got there in the end. The only 'modification' I did was to sand down slightly the location ledges for the cowling to get that in line a bit better. Having looked at John Aero's solutions elsewhere in Britmodeller I think it is not too far out. I had trouble too with fitting the lower wing, and don't think I trimmed the area sufficiently, which may have contributed to the 'strut length' issue. Having got the top wing on and the rigging done, I then realised I had not added the wing walkway transfers. This was a bit of a boo-boo, and it proved I had done the wrong thing when the front of the transfers would not bed down on the wing leading edge curve, I could not get a cotton bud or tissue there to press down due to the rigging! It eventually did settle down with the aid of some Pledge/Future. I know I have had my own self-inflicted problems with this, but it is a beautiful kit, it looks the part and having done this one, I would certainly attempt another one in the future (maybe in the upcoming Group Build here on BM). Thanks for looking, all the best, Ray
  24. Probably shouldn't start this one yet since I'm not finished with my Bf-110 but I made the mistake of using Vallejo primer on it, there was some spatter and a couple blemishes, and I can't sand it for 48 hours ... so I'm going to do what I can on my P-40 instead. I chose the Airfix 1/72 P-40B, which seems like a really nice kit so far. Very simple, not tons of detail, but so far decent (yet far from perfect) fit. I won't do box shots or sprues because everyone else in here already has. Instead I'll post shots of what I have done so far in barely an hour's time while running in and out of the house on errands, so you can see what a nice, quick build this really is. And shots of the decals. Haven't decided yet whether I want to do White 17 or AK992 yet. But it's gonna be one of those.
