  1. Another project, the XF8U-1 Cruasder prototype, Bu no. 138899. This is the 1/72 Academy kit. I plan building a few of these, so I may end up boring everyone about F-8s. The guns are filled in, the first bunch were. I found some CMK wheel well replacement parts. The kit parts are still quite useable, but these have the plumbing added. I actually like the Aires parts more, but they are out of production now. If nothing else, use the aftermarket parts for referance, be a lot cheaper. It has an Aires cockpit with a backdated instrument panel and a soon to be modified A-4 seat to represent the Vought seat. Luckily the actual aircraft was just restored and I found a few pictures online. The nose and wing top are from David Newman of Muroc models and fit quite good, just need some tweaking since it was meant to be used with the kit cockpit. I also have the second prototype being built alongside, just no pictures yet. The dolly is the 1/48 one from the B-29 kit, Good use for it. I fixed two of them up and they make great dollies for holding aircraft and look good to.

  3. This isn't going to be a very involved WIP, but I thought I'd put one together upon my return from a few months hiatus from modelling. I have other stalled projects that I should probably be working on, but it has been well established that Spitfire builds bring good luck. So this build includes a high back XVI from an AZ 'Joypack', a low back AZ XVI, and my unfinished Mk I from the Battle of Britain GB. The Mk I depicts the aircraft of 'Titch' Havercoft who flew with 92 Sqn during the Battle of Britain. It just needs its prop, landing gear and a little weathering. Next up is a Mk XVI that I'm planning on finishing as James 'Stocky' Edwards' aircraft from when he commanded 127 Wing in Germany near the end of the war, using this Xtradecal set. This is the first time I've tried using pre-cut canopy masks. Pretty nice! I had to use a little of the new Tamiya 'curves' masking tape since the Techmod masks were designed for the Hasegawa kit. The new Tamiya tape is pretty good stuff too. I brushed on some metalizer in order to do some chipping as Stocky's Spitfire looks pretty beat up in the few pics I found here, and here. The bubble top Mk XVI is going to depict Boleslaw Kaczmarek's aircraft from 302 Sqn using the same Xtradecal sheet. It's good to be back!

  6. Piston Provosts Provost T1 WV679 / O-J 2FTS 1958 (Matchbox kit) Provost T1 XF559 / Q-B 1FTS 1960 (S&M kit) New kits often have me digging out the old ones and this is what happened with the new S&M Provost kit. The old Matchbox kit had been in the stash since the mid 1970s and I decided to build the two together. The S&M kit is much finer of course, and has a lot more detail, especially in the cockpit. I scratch built some new prop blades, though, because the kit blades are just too skinny. The kit comes with the external stiffeners nicely moulded into the flaps and control surfaces, but I removed them because nearly all the photos I found of ‘XF’ machines showed them with smooth surfaces. The decals were very nicely printed but are unusable because the roundels and serials are far too small, whereas the stencils and badges are too big! So out came the old Modeldecal sheet for XF559, which is also about 30 years old, but worked OK apart from the yellowed roundels which I replaced. Decals for the Matchbox kit also came from generic Modeldecal sheets. The kit was OK for such an old tooling, but the thick Matchbox canopy gives it away. I put the flaps down on both models because that’s the way they seem to be when parked.
  7. I've joined in a Gordon Stevens Memorial Group Build over on HyeprScale with what will be my first attempt at a vac-build. Just to complicate matters I plan to use a Red Roo Mariner GR.1 conversion set intended for the Minicraft kit, plus the gun turrets from the Minicraft kit (Ed Russell of Red Roo gave me the turrets when I found out he was converting his Minicraft kit to an RAAF PBM-3 transport without turrets). For details of the Red Roo Mariner GR.1 set see my in-box review: http://www.hyperscale.com/2014/reviews/accessories/redroorrr7251reviewmd_1.htm Being new to this vac-form lark I'm off to a slow start. I must admit Rareplanes' plastic seems nice enough to work with so far. There are some shape and dimensional differences compared with the Minicraft PBM, so I anticipate a some dramas when I come to use the Minicraft turrets (especially with the nose one). I only noticed that the cockpit canopy was quite misshapen and malformed after cutting it from its backing sheet in preparation for trimming: I tried using the vac canopy as a mold for an Amazing Sculpt (like Milliput) master, but was none too happy. Besides, the kit canopy is not that good to begin with, if you're used to canopies by Falcon like me. So I decided to scratch-build a canopy master in order to better achieve the faceted effect of the lower clear panels, and would match Rareplanes' slightly inaccurate (IMO) overly curved shape using Amazing Sculpt for the top panels. I hope to plunge mold a new canopy over the weekend when I've sanded the Amazing Sculpt to shape and polished the master up. After basic filing and sanding down to plastic-card forms: I have a usable canopy after my third molding attempt. I would like to do one in thicker material, but I need to source something suitable as the scrap packaging I was using is a bit thin. But I have proof of concept, so work on the Mariner can resume now I know I have a workable canopy solution. Not a lot of progress. I made a representative flight-deck based on photos, cutaway drawings and the Minicraft kit. It's enough to convey the "flavour" of a PBM's flight-crew stations given the little that will be visible. I also cut out the portholes and windows which will be glazed with clear styrene sheet punched out and cut to fit respectively:

  11. I originally intended to build the new tool 1/48 Airfix kit in the markings from Ian R. Gleed's mount LK A from 87 Squadron in black. But as I am already committed in the Made in UK and P-47 GBs and also like to participate in the Corsair GB, I have to give this build a miss for the moment. Instead I am building two new tool 1/72 Airfix Hurricane OOB in early RAF service. First in line is Hurricane L1568 of B Flight from No 73 Squadron at Digby in Summer 1938. Xtradecal 72-193 has the S and 73 represented in black, but it looks more like blue (or red) to me. Any opinions on this? The second build is Hurricane L1768 from No 151 Squadron at North Weald in early 1939. Unfortunately the Xtradecal set lacks accuracy and the Squadron Codes are way too skinny - I really don't get it how they can screw this up with pictures of the real deal like above ??? Also does this aircraft has the serial number on the fuselage as shown on the Xtradecal instruction? Doesn't look so to me. So as I most likely have to make my own mask for the squadron codes, I am actually tempted to make Hurricane L1934 from No. 3 Squadron in June 1939 with the roundel on the port wing only instead. Still undecided. Cheers, Peter

  16. Hi all! I just want to share with you the things I have been doing to a 1/72 Heller F-16 A/B old issue, I got this kit to tinker with it and learn well... everything! I haven't done any aircraft modelling in a really long time and last time it was just a gluey mess with pieces of plastic attached to it. So I decided to go for a cheap kit and learn all the basic and try some advance stuff as well. This kit has raised panel lines which I decided to sand down and scribe them with a tamiya pea cutter I am also doing the riveting bit by bit using a small 0.3mm drill bit. I will get some pics when I have some more done. I also got inspired by the fantastic work of Diego Quijano detailing a F-18 also on a 1/72 scale. The more I work on my F-16 the more respect I got for the level of complexity and the attention he put on his model! I have been working during the past week in detailing the landing gear bay and getting it to a more interesting level and the original kit had absolutely no detail whatsoever. Here are some pictures of it: Still want to do some more cable work and also start working on the landing gear per se to detail it a bit more. I am also thinking in cutting some part of the fuselage to scratch build some of the internal bays. Any comments/suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks! and all the best

I present the Pj Productions boxing of the High Planes Mirage, the base kit was the MIrage 5 boxing and using the MIRSIP conversion set you can model the Chilean Air Force Elkan version, I used the FCM decal sheet 72-33 for the markings which went on really well much better than the recent Brazilian Air Force sheet I used. Alongside some of her South American delta wing brethren Anyway hope you enjoy Willy
  22. Hi Guys I will be building the 1/72 Matchbox Halifax B.II srs 1, that is in a Revell box from 2006. She will be build mostly out of the box with just a few extra goodies. I will build her as a plane that was shot down at the night of 12/13 june 1943. It crashed near the outskirts of Ulft in the Netherlands. Ulft is just a few miles from the German border. The plane was from 158th Squadron and used the codes NP * W. Its tailnumber was HR724. It was from a batch that was produced between March and July 1943. I read somewhere that she was shot down at just her third mission. So it was quite new when it crashed. As it was quite new I will keep the weathering to the minimum. Here are some pictures of the box and content. And the decals with a extra masking set from Montex for this model. And two sets of Quickboost for the gun barrels and the exhausts. The exhausts are for the new Revell model, so might need some modification. And a extra decalsheet from model decals for the sqn codes. That is it for now. Can't wait till next weekend. Cheers,

  24. If I take the tail fins, wings and engine nacelles from an Eduard Bf110G and stick them on an Eduard Bf110E (short) fuselage with it's canopy, undercarriage etc do I get a Bf110F or will I still be missing something? I'm thinking 1/72 scale so I'm not really concerned with any tiny internal cockpit differences. Duncan B
  25. I've had a few Corsairs in the stash patiently waiting for this STGB, and now, I think, they're happy to be off the shelf. For the first one, I'm planning on using the popular Fundekals sheet to build Leslie Durno's JT383. The well researched instructions say that this one was painted in the American TSS equivalents, so that is what I'll attempt to do. I've been planning this one a while and even had a dream last night about adding the RN CO vents. I wish I had dreamed about clipping the wings too, then maybe I'd already know how to do it. For the second Corsair, I'm thinking about trying to do NZ5361, using a hodgepodge of decals from the stash. I believe both aircraft are Vought built F4U-1A's according to a little research, and so I'll be using the Tamiya kit of that subject. If all goes well, I may start a USMC birdcage Corsair that will be the subject of my entry into the Vignette GB - we're allowed to have some elements built already for that one, and I think I may need the head start. I'm going to try and replicate this picture of Capt Donald Balch and his Corsair. I've built the Tamiya kit once before, just last month in fact. Here's 'Tiny' the F4U-2 night fighter.
