  1. As I will be going back to work on 17th I've pulled this out of the stash to tide me over for the remaining days of my leave. An old kit, the instructions say 1984 but probably older, a nice simple build (hopefully) so fits the bill for a few days relaxation. My only concern is the decals which look a bit ropey. If the worst comes to the worst and the finished model is worth it I'll get this set to replace them, https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/MPEC72019
  2. No. 264 squadron flew Meteor night fighters from 1951 when it replaced its ageing Mosquitos with NF.11s, subsequently upgrading to the NF.14 in October 1954. The squadron flew these from Linton-on-Ouse until renumbering as 33 squadron on 30th September 1957 and moving further north to Leeming. The NF.14 had the most powerful engines of all the Meteor night fighters and continued in service until 1961. However, by the mid-50s it was fast becoming obsolete and regularly out-performed by Canberras during exercises. Despite this it was generally popular with its crews and just over 100 were built. WS810 was delivered to the RAF in March 1953, and became one of the last operational Meteor NF.14s after transferring to 60 sqn following 264's disbandment.
  3. Here is my Airfix Victor B.2 that I finished over a year ago but never got round to posting When it came to which Victor to model there was only one choice for me and that's XL231. Been a member of the team who maintain XL231 at the Yorkshire Air Museum the choice was simple. I added Eduard's excellent pre painted etch to the cockpit and despite the fact that much of it can't be seen it did give the cockpit a very much real look to it. The model represents 231 as she was as a Blue Steel aircraft of the Wittering wing. 4. The sleek and angular Fairey Delta 2 was the first aircraft to exceed 1,000 m.p.h. in level flight. Tailless and with a distinctive needle nose, it was designed by Herbert Chaplin of the Fairey Aviation Company. The F.D.2 was created to meet a British government requirement for an experimental to investigate transonic flight – flight at or near the speed of sound. The two intakes for its Rolls-Royce Avon afterburning turbojet were in the roots of its mid-set, slender delta wing, which had 60 degrees of sweep on its leading edge. Because the aircraft adopted a nose-high attitude on its landing approach, it was designed with a nose capable of drooping by 10 degrees. Test pilot Peter Twiss took the F.D.2 beyond Mach 1 on 28 October 1955, reaching Mach 1.56. On 10 March 1956 two measured runs were undertaken at 38,000ft. achieving a mean speed of 1,132mph (Mach 1.73). This was an extraordinary 38% faster than the previous record, set by a North American Sabre fighter only seven months earlier. A second F.D.2 was used for aerodynamic research in the development of Concorde.
  5. Here is my latest completed model, the very nice Eduard Profipack Fokker Triplane. I started this build to mark the centenary of the death of von Richthofen on 21 April 1918. My usual slow pace of building means I an almost on month late. Brush painted with Citadel red - I think it is called something odd like Evilsunz scarlet or some such, over an undercoat of pink. Unfortunately I forgot to take any photos of it in its undercoat, more Pink Panther than Red Baron! Built OOTB using some of the PE provided with the kit, I did droop the elevator as most photos of DR1s show it drooping, also my first attempt at rigging, using thin fishing line. Not perfect but I am happy with the result: Andrew
  6. Afternoon all, just to prove I've not forgotten about this GB, I made a start on the more modern component of my two builds, primarily because its my least familiar environment. So here is the EF Typhoon cockpit painted up and installed with the two fuselage halves glued together and the pilot and seat ready to be installed at an opportune moment. I have used the kit cockpit decals for the most part, but decided not to use the screen decals as they just didn't look right, instead the two outer screens were painted black and gloss varnish dropped in, the middle screen is a square of green holographic plastic from a birthday card with some blobs of Tamiya clear green added and again some gloss varnish dropped in, in the right light it almost glows. The HUD in the kit is to say the least a little clunky so I'll replace it with something more suitable closer to the time the windscreen gets fitted. I painted up a spare Airfix pilot figure and added a gloss black visor, face mask and tube plus some masking tape seat belts and a bit of a suggestion of the Mae West. The kit seat was only enhanced by adding replacement wire thingy's at the side as the kit efforts were a little insubstantial. The seat does not seem to sit particularly well in the cockpit tub and getting the angle right may involve some remedial engineering for the hardware and some equally drastic surgery to the occupant but that's a ways off yet. Its a start at least. Cheer, M.
  7. This was included in a box given to me. One was on the runners and this one had been started and some parts were missing. I had to scratch the clear part of the canopy, the wing fences and some of the undercarriage doors. No decals with it either, so I used these Lightning markings.
  8. Hi all Here is my recently completed Special Hobby 1/72 Meteor T.7.5 I usually model in 48th but having modellers block I decided to do something a bit different and was attracted to this colour scheme, there is something about a military aircraft in civi clothing that I like took my around 5 days to complete and I'm reasonably happy with it so thought id share it with you all. 9. Dear fellow Britmodellers, this is Dragon's 1/72 Churchill Mk.III AVRE of 82nd Assault Squadron, 79th Armored Division, operating in North West Europe in 1944. I painted with Gunze acrylics and weathered with artist's oils and pastel chalks. The figure is from CMK. Photographs by Wolfgang Rabel. Thanks for your interest! Best greetings from Vienna.
  10. I've started thinking about by next project and thought I'd take on a 1/72 B-29, an aircraft I've wanted to build since I was a kid. It looks like the Academy version is the best option and I'd like to do nmf but with turrets, so not the Enola Gay / Bockscar version. Is the best option to get the "Old Battler" and a different decal set? Can anyone recommend a WWII, nmf scheme and decals? Also what other extras are worth looking at? Thanks!
  11. With all the problems I've had recently I haven't been confident to do an RFI - but thanks to a lot of support I am firmly 'back in the saddle' - so may I present 3 Universal Carriers from the 8th Rifle Brigade of the 11th Armoured Division... I won't bore you with all the details - but they were immense fun to build and if you want to see more there is a WIP thread... https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235036099-carry-on-bully-completed/ Constructive comments are most welcome and if you like them - you can 'like them' over here >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thanks for having a look - Steve
  12. When I opened the new Airfix Phantom FG1 I was blown away by the various options for the finished model. I know the kit has problems with missing vents etc but this is countered by the variety of poses available. I generally build my aircraft 'wheels up' but I fancied a change. I wanted lowered flaps and slats etc but didn't really want to pose it launching so the obvious solution was a landing aircraft. I also wanted the hook down so this necessitated a carrier landing. Finally I wanted something a bit different to the RN aircraft provided by Airfix. A quick browse of Hannants website resulted in some decals and PJ Production aircrew (I still don't understand why Airfix omitted these). Fours months of work later and a steep learning curve with my new airbrush resulted in this: Phantom 1 by Brian Mather, on Flickr Phantom 2 by Brian Mather, on Flickr Phantom 3 by Brian Mather, on Flickr Phantom 4 by Brian Mather, on Flickr She is far from perfect and I am not sure about the historical accuracy of an A&AEE Phantom landing on HMS Ark Royal but I am sure you will allow a little modeller's licence!
  13. Here's a Messerschmitt Bf109 you don't see that often, the G-1. The G-1 and G-2 were the first of the G series (obviously) and the G-1 had cockpit pressurisation but the G-2 did not. AZ Models make a reasonably decent series of 109 kits, many of which you can't get from more mainstream manufacturers, so far 109 fans, these kits are brilliant. This one is from JG54 'Grunherz' and I believe it's one that Walther Nowotny flew. thanks Mike
  14. Academy Super-Étendard 1/72 oob, old Sunny Tri-S mold from '83, decent kit, painted with Vallejo acrylics.
  15. Greetings! New tool Airfix kit of the Curtiss P40B Warhawk completed in the U.S. Army Air Corp colour scheme for the 79th Pursuit Squadron, 20th Pursuit Group at Hamilton Field, California in 1940. Airfix has done a great job with this kit and it comes together very easily straight from the box. I did not use the kit decals and went with the excellent Starfighter Decals 1/72 Pre-War USAAC P-40B set #72-134. Many thanks for having a look, questions and comments always welcome! Bill
  16. I would like to throw my hat into the ring if I may. A quick review of the stash presented a number of options including these: The Airfix 1/48 Meteor was very tempting but as I am in the process of finishing of my Eduard Bf110 for the other anniversary build I fancied something ultra simple and OTB....which leads me to... This is obviously the old Matchbox kit and I am not sure I have built one of those for about 25 years. I know the fit is a little ropey but hopefully it will come together without too many issues (famous last words). Not sure which scheme to build it in but probably the one on the box. Cheers Dave
  17. Looking forward to this one. After searching through the stash I came up with this kit: I believe V-P is building the same kit but will make sure I don't do the same scheme. The sprues look up the usual Eduard standard. I am planning on building this more or less OTB but I do have this: Now the major decision left to be made is the scheme. As I said above I won't do the same as V-P but as I think he is not doing one of the kit schemes I may still have a bit of a choice. I am tempted by the Wespe. All thoughts welcome. Cheers Dave
  18. I'll be building the Airfix Wildcat as White 19 the mount of the "Sweede." During the Battle of Santa Cruz on October 26, 1942, Stanley W. ‘Swede’ Vejtasa of VF-10 from the carrier Enterprise downed seven Japanese planes in one fight. This was after he was already famous for dogfighting 3 Zeros for over 25 minutes in a SBD at Coral Sea. Damaging all three. The US Navy awarded him kills on the 3 Zeros, but the Japanese claim they where only damaged. No matter what the outcome, that's insane. The kit arrived today, a little crushed but the contents where fine... Decals. I'll be building the third from the top... What is there left to say about this excellent little kit? It's head and shoulders above the Academy kit I was looking for.... Much better details.... This is my first real attempt at a building thread so I have a lot to learn. But I'll get started tonight giving the kit a through wash.
  19. Just putting a marker down for my build thread, picked up the starter set today in Hobbycraft as I've been thinking about adding a Skyhawk to my collection for a while and I've heard this kit is good. Got a backlog of 1//48 props to clear but with a week off coming up I might take a break from them and smash this one out before maybe attempting a F6F in the stash. I'll add pics in the week
  20. Hello one and all, Some people on here who either remember or read some of my previous posts will know that for the last few years I have been supporting a Liberian friend I used to work with at a school. Teaching kids about Remembrance Day and why we will need to respect those who paid the ultimate price even after 100 years. The format usually goes as thus, she gets in contact with the local RBL branch asking for veterans to come into the school to talk to the kids, a postie from my area collects war memorabilia and medals and displays the various things he discovers and my part is very simple. I try to link the whole lot together with models of various subjects so the kids can relate to a Spitfire or a 109, Sherman, Tiger.... you get the point. Anyhow last year, I found out that one of the veterans we had turning up was a member of the Operation Deadstick (aka Pegasus Bridge Attack) on D-Day, to say this chap is a legend is an understatement. I can not remember the chaps name for the life of me, but he had a wicked sense of humour and was great to talk and listen to. Unfortunately I found out too late about this chap so I couldn't get a Horsa out in time for it, I felt kinda embarrassed as he had nothing to represent him there. That will not be the case this year... so I am going to build a Horsa for him to talk about. So follow my many cock ups below... The Revell/Italeri Horsa Mk.I/II to my knowledge you can only really build a MK.I from this kit as the nose needs to be pointed from the top view and the sides need to be flattened abit for a mk.II? At least to my research that is so? Please correct me if I am wrong. I want to build the version that was used in Operation Deadstick, which I understand where Mk.II's? I may just have to make a "best fit" kinda model unless I can find some decent material on the subject. Pictures below... This wont be the fastest build in history as I have a few models on the go that I want to finish and get off the shelf of doom! But I am hoping to get a good start on this during the bank holiday. I can't remember if it was me or the person I bought the kit from that started the tail. However, that's one less job to worry about either away. Any and all comments are welcome. Kind Regards, Dazz
  21. I have a yearning to make one of the three Lightning Is that were received by the RAF. I understand that: 1) there didn't have superchargers turbochargers 2) the propellers both rotated to the right 3) the armament was different. (2 .50 & 2 .30 ?) So, two questions: 1) Apart from the above, are there any other differences that would be really noticeable in 1/72? 2) is it do-able using the Airfix P-38F?
  22. So I had originally entered the Academy A-10 (Iraqi Freedom) kit in to this GB but unfortunately this has suffered from irreparable damage caused by me stupidly knocking it flying off the bench. After a fair amount of expletives and raised blood pressure, I have since gathered my composure and being the bigger man that I am have decided to continue with the GB but only this time with the following kit: This is a superb looking kit with some excellent detailing - particularly for the cockpit. It comes with a variety of options for paint schemes and I am drawn to 2 at the moment - either the one on the front of the box or this one: As always - your assistance and feedback on helping me choose the scheme would be much appreciated. So in the meantime I've made a start on putting the cockpit together in its basic form with a bit of detail painting in readiness for the washes and PE to go in next. So this is how things stand at the moment: I've follwed this up by getting the RLM02 base coat on the fuselage and undercarriage section on the wings: So more progress to follow soon - hopefully this time I'll be able to make sure that it stays firmly on the bench!!!
  23. Hello everyone ... I thought id post these as I finished the kit in Febuary for the Britmodeller 10th Anniversary group build. The aircraft is Academies OV-10A Bronco. The colors are from an U.S.Navy example based at China Lake with VX-5 in late 1986-87. Not exactly sure why the desert colors on a USN. Bronco ? My working theory is a camouflage test as we were anticipating possibly getting involved in the Iran/Iraq war. In the five photo’s i found the only marking on the aircraft that hadn't been oversprayed was the XE of VX-5 on the Starboard vertical stab., even that was partially over-sprayed. Here is a link to the build. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235032165-corsairs-bronco-build/ As usual feel free to comment ? question ? Or joke. Dennis
  24. Dassault Rafale M 1/72 - Revell 04892 OOB build with some minor fixes. Vallejo acrylics. This is my first post, hope you like it, feedback and criticism is always welcome!
  25. Fine Molds Bf109G-2/R6. The G-2 was the non pressurised version of the G-1 and was the main production model until they swapped to the G-4. This is one fitted with the R6 modification, which consisted of a pair of MG151 20mm cannons in pods under the wings. This gave a useful boost to the firepower, for shooting down bombers but reduced speed and agility for combatting enemy fighters. The Fine Molds kits are the best kits around for Bf109F/G and K models with similar quality to Tamiya and Hasegawa but you do pay extra for it. Despite their cost, anyone who is a fan of 109's and builds in 1/72, should get at least one of these excellent kits! This one is painted up as a JG54 Grunherz aircraft, in a fresh coat of winter whitewash over the camouflage. Please ignore the wonky headrest, I only noticed it after taking off the canopy mask!
