  1. Morning folk's another Airfix oldie picked up without decals so a spurious scheme from spares.Like the Sabre a good test piece for a silver finish for an upcoming build I tried Tamiya's rattle can polished aluminium. It was only £2:99 so no complaints on that score. Thanks for looking in.
  2. Rejoining with this kit. Costing me £5.50 at SMS2009 - ten years in my stash! I've cleared this history with Enzo, it's quite recent. Started on 19 Oct 2019, after completing the X-29 and Angel in the FilmStar GB. I found a Griffon contra-rotating prop in an Aero-Team Spitfire 21, and pictures of a French restored Spit 19 with that prop. Bonus that a colleague of mine has photos of that aircraft at Duxford. The only difference I can see is lack of that scoop below the port exhausts, my scalpel has already removed that. All progressing well, research done, parts available, what could possibly go wrong. . . Cockpit painted and assembled into fuselage, C-R prop assembled, when I dropped the canopy . . . . and the carpet monster swallowed. I even saw it hit the floor! That was 20 Oct. Three days scabbling round on my knees looking. Nothing. How does that happen? Now this is a PR19, with curved windscreen, so I can't just take one from another kit. Shelved, and move onto the Hot Shots Fallus Gnat. A week later hacked-off Tim looks on the Hannants website, and finds they have ONE example of the Pavla vacform canopy in stock - YEAH! Fortunately there's an upcoming model show called SMW2019, Hannants will be present - and are offering 10% discount on show collection - DOUBLE YEAH! And I've got a colleague going - Who agrees to pick up an order - TRIPPLE YEAH! So earlier this week the replacement canopy comes my way - HUGE THANKS!
  3. Built to represent a Firefly of Glory's Korean War air wing in 1951. Despite its age, this was a nice kit to build and the decals took really well. I made it oob except for a slight change of serial number and codes and a bit of extra cockpit detailing. Colours are my usual FAA EDSG gloss spray and Humbrol 90 'beige green' matt spray (I can't find it in gloss!) which I then painted over with clear gloss, followed by a few strokes of dirt wash. As usual, all comments and constructive criticisms welcome and probably needed!
  4. Hello again, Here is the second model I have completed this year after another Eagle. Started this one thinking it would be a fast build to get into painting quick, and just finished it after 6 months of not a lot of free time. Very decent kit, the main issues being the simplistic exhausts and the overly thick closed canopy. Still an enjoyable build with not a lot to fix, and trying to spruce up that gunship gray was also a fun painting experience. 1/72 Academy #12550, Twobobs Da'Heath decals, KA Models exhausts, Reskit wheels, weapons from the kit, Skunkworks, GWH and Tamiya. Thanks for watching.
  5. Hello all! Apologies if I or anyone else has asked the following question before (if so put it down to a senior moment). Looking to a future build after I finish off the models on my worktable. In regard to the markings supplied in the Airfix 1/72 Mitsubishi A6M2 Starter Set (the new tool one), would they be appropriate to any of the Japanese fighters which took part in the first air-raid on Darwin in 1942? Thanks in advance for any replies and/or additional information! DennisTheBear
  6. Hi all, just finished this one and snapped some pics. I'm a relatively new modeler, and welcome all critiques/criticisms/tips! This is my second tank and first one in the 1/72 scale. This was found for a good price at my local model shop, and having never heard of Tiger Model, I was intrigued by the positive reviews and an awesome buildup of this on YouTube. I don't think I was prepared for how small some of these pieces were, but 95% of them fit perfectly so that was great. The kit includes photoetch mesh for the turret baskets and IR panels. I also bought a black dog resin accessory kit for the stowage. As far as I can tell this is the only 1/72 kit produced by this company, which is a bummer. Many firsts for this kit for me - first 1/72 tank, first time using pigments, first time using resin aftermarket. I built it up as a relatively undamaged tank, with pin washes and pigments as my only weathering. The armored windows may be a touch too green and the vision blocks ended up too dark from what I wanted, but overall I'm pretty happy with this build. This is good practice for the 1/35 one I'll eventually get to. Stynelrez grey primer, Mission Models paints (body color of MMP-038, US Desert Tan Modern 2 FS3446) & Semi-Gloss, AK Interactive Ultra Matte, Tamiya clears for the glass, Ammo by MIG enamels and pigments. And as a little bonus, the tank next to my 1/35 Challenger 2 & 9V battery for size comparisons. Thanks for looking!
  7. Hello All, I have been working on this Academy B-29 on and off for a couple of years. Finally decided to make a big push on it to get it done. In any case I have not decided on the markings yet...but most likely a WWII machine. It has a gloss coat of Tamiya black as a base and many hours of polishing before putting on the the Vallejo aluminum...which is outstanding. I have a few panels I will be doing in varying shades but the overall came out pretty good I think. In any case I hope you enjoy the pictures. Of course any comments are greatly appreciated. All the Best! Don
  8. Hi All, Long time in the making but I finally completed this 1/72 Italeri EF-111. This was my first attempt at weathering so would love some feedback on how it looks. The model was built out of box using no extra parts since it was to be more of a training mule than serious attempt to make this kit flawless. Relatively basic weathering to start with. Model was painted then gloss varnished, After this a wash was applied using Revell weathering powders watered down the sealed in using a Matt clear coat. I also attempted some pre shading however realised I applied the dark grey on to thickly so it can’t be seen very clearly however it does show through a little on the light grey areas (hard to see on camera). Definitely techniques I’d like to use again so I’d love your feedback to improve. Thanks BR60066
  9. 1968 Simon's Sircus In an attempt to control the size of the stash, I have a rule that my groupbuild entries must come from the existing stash. So while researching 1968 I came across the Sea Vixen's of Simon's Sircus. Simon's Sircus was an aerobatic display team comprising six Sea Vixen FAW.2 aircraft from 892 Squadron. The team operated for a single season during the summer of 1968 and was named after 892 Squadron’s commanding officer, Lt Cdr Simon Idiens. The team's airplanes were painted in standard FAA colours of dark gray and white with yellow and black wolf's head badge on the fins. Simon's Sircus pilots had a real lioness for a mascot. Need to find a 1/72 lioness. They were based at RNAS Yeovilton and displayed at numerous RAF Airshows and Royal Navy Air Station Air Days during the 1968 season culminating at the Farnborough Airshow in the September. Towards the end of the season, they flew coordinated displays with the Buccaneers from 809 squadron Phoenix Five This was not the first time the Sea Vixen had been used in a aerobatic team, 766 squadron formed a team of five Sea Vixen FAW.1. Fred's Five displayed during 1962 & 1963. I believe that Simon Idiens was a member of this team I will be using Xtrakit's 1/72 Sea Vixen FAW.2 for this build. Decals will be from the Model Alliance sheet "Royal Navy Aerobatic Teams" This sheet also includes decals for a Buccaneer from the Pheonix Five, waiting for Airfix's new Buccaneer.
  10. OK so I couldn't let all you 'rebel scum' have your own way in the group build I'm going to be building this: It's a Revell kit, but a rebox of a FineMolds kit, it's pretty pricey (for what you get), though I didn't pay full price for it. It's a pretty simple kit, all the parts come in a standard, pretty flimsy Revell cardboard box that opens on the ends. It includes some decals for the interior, etc. A colour instruction booklet 3 grey sprues (one entirely for the stand, other than the tiny Vader) and a clear sprue for the window/top hatch, all shoved together in a single bag (other than the clear parts in a separate bag inside). Note one of the pieces had detached in transit/storage and the handlebars/yoke has one of the very flimsy arms bent out of shape/almost about to snap off, the mouldings however seem pretty crisp with little or no flash, injector marks, etc. It seems like it'll be a pretty quick and fun build other than masking the canopy bits, I have no idea on how Revell rank their kits (this being the top level 5), I'm fairly sure I've built more complex aircraft from them before at lower ratings.
  11. Hiya Peeps, For those that don't know, the SR-A1 was a prototype flying boat fighter plane and was the first jet-propelled water based-aircraft in the world. The concept was a reaction to Japan's successful use of military floatplanes and the emergence of the turbojet engine. In 1947, the first prototype (TG263) made its maiden flight, with a further two built. Being outclassed by land-based fighters and lack of orders, the project was cancelled with the last flight in June 1951. Of the three that were built, two were lost due to accidents, one of them being flown by Eric Brown. Here I present my latest from the 'Flying Boats and Floatplanes' group build, a Saunders-Roe SR-A1 using the Planet Models resin kit. Built mainly OOB, with the exception of a scratch built cockpit and the addition of a scratch intake grill. Build here: Stuart
  12. My second build in the BF 109 Night Fighter series this one with Fug 217J radar on the underside of the plane. Not much detail on this a/c all that I've come up with is it was in 4./NJG 11 late war. Markings white 7 I have modified the engine cover to reflect the G10 finished off the cockpit. What do you think of the fuselage join is it smooth enough? comments welcome. @Corsairfoxfouruncle Dennis what are your thoughts?
  13. I am finishing the Hobbyboss TA-7C Corsair and the wing tanks that comes in the kit are too skinny and long. A couple of questions as references are very few. Can anyone recommend a replacement ? Can l use the tanks from another aircraft such as the A-4 Skyhawk /A-6 Intruder ? Is there another A-7 that provides the correct shape and size of wing tank ? I have a Fujimi A-7 Corsair in the stash but they look too short. Regards Robert
  14. Like so many I've rekindled my hobby after a very very long time. After getting back into it a few months ago I had to buy an airbrush and try it. The guinea pig is a ME 262 B-1A. After some lengthy research I think I found the correct colour scheme for this particular a/c which is Red 12. So this Jo-Han kit is old its 1973 and its very basic with no cockpit detail. Now I confess this isn't much of a work in progress as I pretty much finished before discovering this forum. Save decals and weights its almost done. I will post more once completed. Box Art from the 70's Note the high production values in the instruction booklet Here is my first go at air brushing This kit didn't come with drop tanks which is another little anomaly with the kit, any way its an easy fix.
  15. Morning y’all have a question about 1/72 Maverick missiles AGM 65 for mounting on a Harrier GR7/9. Firstly could a single Maverick and a CRV7 rocket pod be mounted on the same. Aircraft for a close air support role, or would it have to be same on each wing ?? Secondly does anyone know where can get 2 Mavericks as unsure which weapons set would be needed /kit that would have extras. Thanks for ya help
  16. Well after checking out the gallery last night I could no longer resist the temptation of participation. I have a number of F-4 kits in the stash. I will be joining with an old Esci F-4E, the decals in my kit are shot (pictures to follow soon) so I will have to do it with aftermarket decals. I have a variety of local decals to do a RAAF machine so some of those will be used. I also rifled through my aftermarket and found some Verlinden MB Mk7 seats and an Eduard PE set for the Hasegawa F-4E, I will use what I can from this one. I have made a start on the cockpit and nose wheel well so far, again pictures to follow soon. I think I will finish it in this config, but may substitute Snake-eyes rather that Slick MK82s.
  17. Hello! Here's the second of my "jump jets" posted today, the 1/72 Hasegawa F-35B. This one was built out of the box and the only major modification was to add some more detail to the pilots seat and downwards pointing nozzle. The kit went together very easily and most of the build time was spent on the paint job. This consisted of an Alclad Aluminium basecoat underneath my own Haveglass grey, mixed together from xf54, x32 and xf85 - this gives an interesting sheen which changes tone depending on the lighting and the angle you look at it. I then spent an age masking the ram panels before spraying another mix of grey. I tested out the ram panel decals in the box on the inside of the tail fins but they are just to contrast-y for my liking to be used all over. I'm really glad to get this one over the finish line and pretty pleased with the final result, even if there are a few things I need to work out for future builds - tinting the canopy was a disaster and I gave up in the end and like the Harrier I got some decal silvering probably because the gloss coat over the paint needed to be smoother..... WIP here: Enjoy! Different light, different effect:
  18. RAM Models is to release on February 29th, 2016, 1/72nd Vickers VC-10 C.1/C.1K vacuform kits. Source: http://www.rammodels.co.uk/index.php/cPath/65 V.P.
  19. Building this kit, bought earlier tonight from Aldi. As Hot Shots Fallus fighter bomber. The Navy! Using decals from anothe Gnat in my stash. Parts. I've never seen this option built up. And a very quick interior paint job.
  20. Hi Guys Here we go, I’m using this kit by Tamiya as the base build for an early BF 109 Night Fighter flown by 10. Staffel IV. Gruppe Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 G9+JV Not all 109's had the PielG IV system, this could have been by choice or it just depends when the photo was taken as there is a photo of this plane without the PielG. IV. This kit is very clean no flash, good start! I started by painting all the bits that need RLM02 on the sprue, I’ll cut and paint during assembly. Oh boy! 7 different colours just for the cockpit. Wings assembled fits really well.
  21. Hi all, this is just a place marker for the time being. I am still floundering in the Frog GB and time is running out. I should not even be wasting precious minutes typing all this! Anyway, I will attempt to build the Academy 1/72 P-40E, which is a lovely kit. A few photos: And I am adding a couple of aftermarket goodies, as I cannot stand the shape of the Academy spinner, and the wheel wells are far too shallow for my liking! I am planning to start this build after October 6th, upon completion of the Frog GB. Actually looking forward to build a P-40. It has been a few decades since the last one I built. Cheers. JR
  22. So the second of the four Japanese aircraft I am putting together, Airfix's Mitsubishi Zero, built OOB with H Models Zero over Saipan decal set. The decals represent an aircraft, white 8-07 captured by the US Marines on Saipan Island in June 1944 and was transfered to the US for testing. This will be the second Airfix Zero I have built but the first was a normal kit where as this and no3 are both starter sets picked up from a well known supermarket and I get the feeling the starter sets quality is not as high as the normal kit (also had one of the Mustang starter from the same supermarket which had the wrong decals) I don't know if anyone has noticed this? The kit built fairly well but had flash on some of the smaller parts and the transparency moulding was not as defined as the previous Zero built, Used Tamiya acrylics through out. IMGA0761 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0762 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0763 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0764 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0765 by neil Connor, on Flickr And lastly lined up with its sister aircraft IMGA0766 by neil Connor, on Flickr
  23. Hi guys. As inter-mated during the last RAF launch build, here is my next ASRL. This time I'll be doing a later version; gone has the bright yellow deck and up with armament, the reason being that yellow was too noticeable by 'Jerry' pilots...you don't say. I also had these bad boys in the stash, so it will be interesting to see the comparison with the kit examples. And here is where we join the party. You'll notice that the molded nets have been ousted, the holes filled and the toe rails have also been 'done'. If you're wondering, no harbour scene this time but she will be at sea, with crew and maybe some chap in the water. Stuart
  24. Hello everyone... Here is the latest build in my quest to build 10 of Josef “Pip’s” Priller’s aircraft. This is an Eduard Fw-190A5 weekend kit with decals from my spares. The drop tank and rack are from spares. The A5 he flew had an early light rack instead of the later Factory rack. Other than that its strictly out of box. And a few with all of my “Pip’s” builds to date. Im not sure which of his planes will be built next. It may be a Fw.190D9 or it maybe something else ? So if you're interested check the link for updates. Here is a link to the build thread. Questions, comments, and or thoughts ? Dennis
  25. Hi Folks, I started this back in March as a Britmodeller newbie and having been completely distracted by the FROG Group Build, I've finally finished it. Spitfire PR Mk.XIX RM643/Z based at RAF Benson, the home of British WW2 photographic reconnaissance. A few bits of info about the kit and the AM parts used in the build; 1/72 Airfix Spitfire PRXIX Rob Taurus replacement canopy Pavla resin cockpit Aires Quickboost spinner/prop blades and exhaust Barracuda door and crowbar Xtracolor PRU Blue gloss enamel paint, airbrushed on Xtradecal transfers set Barracuda stencils Winsor & Newton matt acrylic varnish to finish The kit has come in for a fair amount of criticism over the years, but I think Airfix captured the lines of one of the best looking Spits fairly well. Obvious errors that I think are noticeable are the fairings over the Griffon engines rocker covers are too narrow, this is especially noticeable when the model sits on the shelf next to my old Fujimi Mk.XIV and the u/c legs that are too raked too far forward. There are other accuracy niggles, but I overall enjoyed the build and think it looks OK. Hope you like it. For those who want more, the build thread is here; Thanks for looking.
