  1. I may not be a drunken sailor... yet. But after this build I may want to be. Ok, this is so far past out of my comfort zone I'll have to take a train ship just just to get BACK to Out of my Comfort Zone. 1. It's been almost 60 years since I last build a ship of any kind let alone a Big honking one. 2. 1/72 may be the "Gentleman's Scale" it's not mine. But then I ain't a Gentleman neither. 3. I now have to re-arrange some shelving to put this when done and make even MORE room to build this while doing 2 extremely large Bombers out in the main Aircraft build area plus assorted other GB's at present. in other words.... @AdrianMF!!! I blame you So lets see what we have to work with shall we.... I still have to get a wooden base and some paint but that shouldn't be an issue out of the gate.. Making enough room to build will but follow along if you dare. Pay no attention to the sea shantys. Sea shantys ? (say that ten times as fast as you can with out messing up) broadcasting while the build progresses. All comments and what not will definitely be welcomed. So Anchors Aweigh!
  2. Got to shake off the cobwebs, or shake up my mojo! Either shoudl work fine!😁 I know there is about a month left for this, but I don't intend do to much other than OOB. The details in this kit help in that. I don't know if Revell did the original molds, but the details are quite nice. Pics, of course... I'll be using he kit decals. For PE, I'll using a set for a B-17 for the seat belts. Sprue shots! These wheels look great. And they are a single mold, so no gluing halves together. A little sanding will make a nice plat spot on them. Engine nacelles, fronts and backs. Gear well doors, again with the great detail in there! They'll have to split for lowered gear. Cockpit has some great detail as well. Detail in the gear wells are nice too, as well as the bomb bay. Although, sorry for those who like to see them displayed, but the doors will be closed up on this. Fabric control surfaces are nicely done. And, finally, the top of the wing, Since this will be a Whif, I'll be using the kit decals, but it'll be natural metal, with the idea that they'd rather save weight so it reaches the target, rather than look nice in its camo. I may also delete the guns, as another weight saving measure, ala the Tokyo Raid. (and remove the need for AF barrels...) Hope to get some work started real soon. Thom
  3. CF-104 "833" RCAF 439 squadron "Tiger" at RAF Woodbridge Tiger Meet in 1969. Built the current Revell 1/72 kit using the Esci decals. Complete nightmare to use. Luckily my Esci kit had two sets of decals. First attempt at taking one of the decals out of the water - it disintegrated into thousands of specks. So I liberally coated both sets of decals with Microscale Liquid Decal film. It was really tricky seperating the decals & film from the decal paper, but I eventually got there. The Canadian roundels were from the Hasegawa JASDF/RCAF decal sheet as were some stencils. All the black tiger stripes were masked using Tamiya flexible masking strip, blutac & masking tape. The Vicon camera pod was the clear resin one from Airgraphics. Ejection seat was from Aires & the pitot was fashioned from brass tube & rod. This was originally intended for the Canadian Group Build but it kept being put back, mostly for another couple of builds. Still waiting for a 3D printed ladders for it. I am intrigued as to what the "Red piddling man" is meant to represent which had been zapped a couple of times on the fuselage? If anyone could enlighten me, I would love to know! Thanks for looking! Martin
  4. Having just finished my O-2A Cessna Skyhawk, I'm now ready to start on the last planned entry for my Wisconsin Air National Guard collection: the A-10A Thunderbolt II (a.k.a. "Warthog"). In October 1981 the Wisconsin ANG's 128th Tactical Air Support Wing was redesignated the 128th Tactical Fighter Wing and began trading in their Cessna OA-37B Dragonflies for the A-10A. During the A-10 era, the unit received two Outstanding Unit Awards, three Air Force Flight Safety Awards, and in 1991 an "Outstanding" in its Unit Effectiveness Inspection. Deployments with the A-10 included Operation Coronet Cove to Panama, and "Checkered Flag" missions to NATO bases in West Germany and England. With the end of the Cold War, the early 1990s marked several changes. In March 1992, the wing became the 128th Fighter Wing and shortly thereafter began transitioning from the A-10A to the F-16C/D block 30 Fighting Falcon, which they fly to this day. For this build I will using the well-reviewed 1/72 Revell kit, which I found on eBay for a reasonable price: Inside of the end-opening box are two gray sprues and one clear sprue: The clear parts, unfortunately, were not separately bagged, and there are a couple of obvious scratches on the front windscreen which I will have to polish out: There is also water damage on the decal sheet, so I've ordered aftermarket decals for the numerous stencils. As usual, I will print custom decals for the Wisconsin ANG markings. Besides the 235 board number and "WI" on the fin, "Bucky Badger" (on the engine pod) is the only other Wisconsin-specific marking: I also have amassed a goodly collection of aftermarket items, not all of which I expect to use: Let's get started! My first task is to make the Aires resin cockpit fit in the fuselage. Although the Aires cockpit is designed specifically for this kit, every Aires cockpit I've used has required significant thinning and rework of the fuselage to achieve a good fit. I marked off the areas that would need to be thinned, and attacked them with my rotary tool and a set of set of small scrapers: The rear deck behind the ejection seat also had to be modified: After much trial-and-error, the cockpit eventually fit nicely in place: Aires provides a nice replacement for the forward "dash", which requires cutting away the kit's representation: Here's the replacement piece test-fitted in place. I did end up with a gap at the front, but that's no big problem and I'll tackle that at the appropriate time: That's enough progress for now. Next step will be to paint, detail, and assemble the cockpit pieces.
  5. Hello all, this is my first contender for this Group Build. I was going to continue with a Maldivian Air Taxi scheme one which had been approved by our hosts. I had modified the front windscreen and built an interior with suitable seating. I had only glued two of the kit bulkheads. My original plan was to swap the fuselage over, because I had not successfully managed to create a replacement windscreen. Then I realised that I had also sanded off a couple of ice protectors from the fuselage as they are not required in the Maldives, and would not be suitable for my other options. This means I needed another plan, so I packed that one away, and have started another one. It is a long story with the Twin Otter, but I have flown in more of them than any other aircraft, so I ended up with a few Revell boxings of the Matchbox kit, and collected markings for Twotters that belonged to the airlines I have flown in. This one will be from Royal Nepal Airlines, as these Twin Otters were the ones that introduced me to trekking in Nepal, something I have done a lot of, and would love to do again one day. Anyway, the obligatory images: The box and parts are all pretty much well known. The transfers though are from Parkes682Decals. I got them some time ago. I have used his transfers before, and was very impressed. They had an all-over carrier film, and settled down well over raised detailing, as in the Nepal Airways Twin otter I did quite a long time ago: This kit is going to be built pretty much out of the box otherwise, and the only modification I will do is to adjust the prop blades to the feathered position. I will be leaving the windscreen totally alone, I am not falling into that trap again (this time anyway). So far, I have just added some paint inside: I do have another Group Build subject going at the moment (a vacform Felixstowe in 'Anything but Injection') so I will be alternating between one and t'other, and I still have my Ilyushin VC-10-alike to follow too. Anyway, that enough of the intro, more soon with luck. Thanks for dropping in, Ray
  6. I have decals coming for my Airfix 1/72 build, Admiral Prune, so I decided to do this one and use the Oor Wullie decals for my 1/72 Revell kit. It has lots of issues but I will attempt to fix the worse ones. I will move the pilot seat 4 mm forward, add 2 degrees to the wing dihedral, add the DF loop and use a spare set of 1/72 Airfix tires for the main landing gear. Not sure if I will fix, replace or just let the tail wheel go.---John
  7. Here's my 1/72 AW101, finished in the colours of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, built for the helicopters group build. It's converted from the Revell Merlin HC.3, which required a change of the window configuration and a few other detail differences. Decals were (mostly) custom printed, paint was Tamiya and Gunze (although I think the dayglo was AK real colour). Thoroughly enjoyable build, experimented with a few new things, windows didn't work out quite as planned but I learned a lot. Build thread is here. thanks for looking Julian
  8. Hello everyone.... This one of my three builds for this group build. I will be building this as Gregory Pappy Boyington’s 883 his go to Corsair during the time that VMF-214 were in the Slot. The decals in the kit actually combine 17786 and 16883 aircraft into one. Incorrect though they are most of the decals will be used for the build. All I need do is change the side #’s from 86 to 883. 17786 was famously used for a series of photo’s and an article shortly before Pappy was shot down and Captured. The obligatory sprue shots. Im not sure i will use the resin engine, my fat sausage fingers may not be able to handle the delicate work of assembling it. Though its still a possible. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or add thoughts. Dennis
  9. Hi all, I'm going to pick the collective BM brain on Mi-24V Hind colours. I'm doing the old 1990's Soviet camo from a machine used in East Germany (the one with the clover leaf pattern). Does anyone know if the colour call-outs in the 1/72 Revell/Zvezda kit is accurate? Also while i'm here, I've seen both gull grey and light blue used in the cabin interior, does anyone know which to use for this scheme? Lastly if anyone has any suggestions for the dark grey cockpit colour that would be great, thanks!
  10. Hi, A second Ju-86 of my shelf. Together with high altitude recce version (Ju 86 R1, which I posted recently) I did also much smaller conversion of civil Z-2 into Z-7 converted then into bomber in South Africa. Depicted "647" was one of such machines. She served in 12 Sq of SAAF, Ethiopia 1941 acting against Italians, I guess. There are discrepencies in sources on top wing roundls ("A1" or "B" - I have chosen A1 roundels, since on some poor quality photos those marks has some bright fragments which can be interpreted as sight of white form A1 mark. Now there is a conversion by Kora, but I did it in 2002, and those days I did not know if there was any ready conversion, so it own work. The nose symbol is hand painting on decal, other decals are from a drawer. Brush painting. Please enjoy and comments are welcome Regards Jerzy-Wojtek
  11. Hi all, I finished this a couple of weeks ago but haven't had a chance to take any pictures until now, its the 1/72 Revell Halifax B I/II finished as a GR II, I used the Freightdog improvement set and the raised fairing for the dorsal turret and the Tollerton nose, decals were from the kit and spares box. I know its not a patch on the recent Halifax kits posted on here in recent weeks but I enjoyed making it and Ive always had a soft spot for the Coastal Command scheme. Hope you enjoy. Willy
  12. Hello, Coming back here with my latest helo build. The subject is one of the Seaking variants Indian Navy operates. Varaiant is mk42C aka charlie variant aka mickey mouse. Kit used is 1/72 Revell Westland seaking MK41 (45 years of SAR). The kit has parts to build multiple variants but does not have some parts for the variant I picked. So had to scratch build the numerous antennas , nose radar dome (hence the name mickey mouse) with styrene and balsa wood. Used model master acrylics and oils for weathering. Kit is a gift from a good friend of mine and he also helped me with the decal situtation. The marking I picked is IN 555 .I was building this on and off for several months now. Finally able to finish it this week.Let me know how you all like it. Thanks
  13. Hi All I going to build the Revell F-4F Phantom Pharewell. The model is a nice blue plastic, so first thing is to change that. The kit looks nice and I think it should go together well. I will post some build photos as I go.
  14. Hi All, I've seen this cheeky little number on ebay, seems good value addition to my 1/72 Tu-22: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/L-M-1-72-Tu-22-LL-Blinder-set-BONUS-/331177734533 But can anyone explain to me what the variant Tu-22 'LL' means...it's not listed on the wikipedia entry for the bomber: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupolev_Tu-22 Any thoughts? And has anyone bought and used the resin conversion? Cheers James
  15. Hello all, to take my mind of a ship build that has stalled somewhat, I thought I needed to do something quick and easy, so a biplane seemed just the job. Add into the mix the colourful nature of the beast and I was hooked. The Revell 1/72 Stearman Kaydet. Right from the outset fun was the name of the game, so there are no additions to what came in the box except glue and paint. Oh yes, and some rigging. The kit was pretty basic, and had a raised legend under the lower wing central section which said Copyright Revell 1981. I thought this was a much older kit than that. That got sanded off of course. This model will win no prizes, but the exercise did its job. On a positive note, the transfers were superb (although you may notice that I misplaced at least one of the red wing bands) and they settled over some awkward detail incredibly well with a bit of Micro Set and Sol. I used the new Humbrol Clear too and had a decent result from that as well, and I used EZ-Line for the first time on a biplane, having mainly rigged ships with it in the past. I drilled holes right through the wings, fuselage and tail surfaces for the attachment points, and my finishing of them is a bit ropey, but I have recently been going through some of my old SAMI mags and have picked up a clue from one of them for my next biplane build that involves either no drilling or only partial drilling instead. The top wing is skew-whiff, but I maintain it was an anti-spin experiment. Thanks for looking, Kind regards, Ray
  16. I will be making the 1/72 Revell boxing of the hasegawa kit with the wolfpack conversion. Still works out cheaper than the haseg with new sprues. I shall be using the Combat Decals Libyan Spring Revolution, 2011 sheet.
