  1. My first waterline diorama, I used a picture frame and lots of pva for the water effect. Pity about the helicopter stand still standing a little proud but i think its a good start. Alex
  2. Hi guys, First time posting on this web and I am still new to ship models. have to admit that 700 ships are too detailed and takes more time than I imagined. Here I have my new Kirishima on the bench, any advice is more than welcome thanks for watching!
  3. These arrived this morning and i just went a bit crazy. Working on my stash of 1/700 world war 2 subs now. Alex
  4. Background: The Yahagi was the second of four Agano class light cruisers build for the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was laid down during November 1941 by Sabeso Naval Arsenal, and launched in the October of 1942. The main armament was six 6-inch carried in three twin turrets and the top speed was 35 knots; two float planes were carried. Yahagi was present at the battles of the Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf, and Battle off Samar. In 1945 Yahagi was attacked by waves of Allied aircraft and sunk with the loss of 445 crewmen. The kit: The model is from Tamiya's 1/700 waterline series and was completed using a mixture of spare photoetch (mostly from various White Ensign Models sets), plus some minor scratch-built details. The hull was painted with Tamiya XF-53 Neutral Grey, and the deck with XF-64 Red Brown. The rigging was accomplished using Uschi rigging thread (.003mm). A log of the build can be found in the Work in Progress section: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234975349-1700-light-cruiser-yahagi/ I had a good time building this model and look forward to doing more IJN subjects in the future; another Agano class ship but in 1/350 is on my wish-list. Thanks for looking, and any comments or questions are most welcome. Regards, Ross.
  5. Hi everyone, this is my first ever WIP thread; I thought it would be interesting to share my progress on a build; the kit is Tamiya's 1/700 IJN Yahagi. I won't be buying any upgrades for this build, so any extra detail will have to be scavenged from my spare bits or otherwise scratch built. Any comments, observations or advice are most welcome. The first step is to begin work on the sub-assemblies and clean up easily identifiable parts in preparation for priming; the fiddly stuff I will prime on the sprue and remove unwanted lines after cutting. Apologies if the picture quality isn't great, as my camera isn't of the highest standard and light levels aren't ideal at the moment. From what I can determine the kit seems to be an older release, and like many Tamiya ships in this scale there is a lack of vertical detail on the superstructure; the lower half of the bridge tower has none at all. It would be a shame to leave it like that since the rest of the kit is of a more than acceptable standard. Using pictures of the 1/350 version of Yahagi as reference I drilled some portholes and added some doors and ladders; some moulded on detail was removed and will be replaced by railings later in the build. The turrets will get the same treatment. I have a concern about the PE parts - the doors resemble slightly chunkier versions of the ladders and it's harder to tell them apart; I will address this in the painting. Two possible options are: 1- apply a recess wash to the outline of the door and to the entire ladder or, 2- apply a recess-wash to the entire door and leave the ladder the same as the hull and treat it as soft detail. I am leaning towards the latter. Regards, Ross.
  6. This model has been repainted at least 3 times now, i'm finally happy with the waterline markings which are painted on (a first for me). Also used halfords rattle cans after reading what other modellers use, i like the primer its a great finish. Alex
  7. "The R-class submarines were a class of 12 small British diesel-electric submarines built for the Royal Navy during World War I, and were forerunners of the modern hunter-killer submarines, in that they were designed specifically to attack and sink enemy submarines, their battery capacity and hull shape being optimized for underwater performance." (source: wikipedia) Made using modelling putty and the drop tanks of a 1/72 scale sea hawk. The bow required a lot of time to sand down to the right shape, i tried top get as much reference material as possible but it still proved a real challenge. I will probably build a second sub with greater accuracy as i feel this one is lacking somewhat, and include the distinctive stepped conning tower of some of the other R-class boats.
  8. This was a really fun project, sculpted and sanded out of modelling putty. Not quite as good as one i saw by Flankerman but i'm pleased how it turned out. Sorry about the picture quality again this one is super small. Any modelling tips or build ideas would be great, i'm tempted to try and build an R-class at some point. Alex
  9. Borrowed a better camera, enjoy Alex
  10. Hi just some pictures of my collection and some of the scratch built work i've been trying my hand at. I'm not particularly skilled but i enjoy building subs, I'm particularly interested in the more unusual or historically significant ones. I have two world war 2 subs in 1/400 with more of a weathered paint scheme and USS virginia, HMS Astute and HMS Triumph in 1/350 scale, although i much prefer the smaller scale as they are easier to make look acceptable. Any feedback or ideas for future projects would be great. I'd be keen to see what other people have been working on as i'm keen for inspiration. Apologies for the poor quality of the pictures, its the best camera i have, cheers Alex HMS Union 1/700 Scale HP resin waterline model with scratchbuilt hull. My first attempt at scratchbuilding a hull, it was a mix of plasticard and modelling putty with pits and pieces from my spares box to finish. NR 1 US nuclear research submarine My first full scratchbuild. Its made up of a drinks straw and the end of a biro with sail and hydroplanes made from plasticard. The raised areas are a mix of modelling putty and a match stick. ARA Santa Fe (S-21) Hobbyboss Balao class sub with scratchbuilt sail and bow sonar dome. The bow has also been reshaped and the gun mounting removed. My first scratch built components. ARA San Luis (S-32) Type 209 class from Shapeways. The two Argentine boats look great next to my Churchill and Swiftsure class boats. Waiting on an Oberon from OKB Grigorov to bulk out my Brits and maybe and TR 1-700 for the Argentines.
  11. Managed to fit this in while waiting for the paint/plaster of paris to dry on the big U-Boat! It's the Revell reboxing of the original Matchbox 1/700 Indianapolis. It was my Christmas (2013!) present from my brother in law. Indianapolis was one of only two Portland-class heavy (8-in) cruisers. I depicted the ship on its last mission - it's just cranking up to full speed having left the Golden Gate bridge behind on 16 July 1945. The ship set two records on this last journey which still stand today - one commendable, and the other tragic. It still holds the record for the fastest surface crossing (just under three days) from San Francisco to Pearl Harbor (Captain Charles McVay's orders were to "make all speed" to Tinian, and he didn't disappoint!) After another record-breaking seven-day run to Tinian the ship dropped off the uranium "gun" for the Little Boy atomic bomb, and made for Manila. Enroute it was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58. 300 of its crew went down with the ship, the remaining 880 went into the water. Through a series of administrative bungles, the US Navy did not record either the distress calls or the delayed arrival of the ship, and as a result its crew drifted in the open for four days, losing 560 more men to exposure, thirst and shark attacks. It remains the US Navy's worst single-ship disaster at sea. Used the WEM set for the Tamiya Indy, scratchbuilt lots of extra details, including all the splinter shields for the gun mounts, added Niko Model 5"/25 guns and quad 40mm Bofors and rigging from copper wire (a tip picked up from ShipbuilderMN - thanks, Bob ) Painted in Tamiya acrylics to save time, but would have rather used enamels as the acrylic went on a bit thick. The big question surrounding the Indy on its last voyage was the colour of the decks - Deck Blue 20-B or Natural wood/Deck Gray 20? I opted for grey on this and chickened out of the natural wood, but when I tackle the Academy 1/350 version I might rethink that. Very simple kit, but I'm glad I made it look a lot busier, it's every bit as good as the Tamiya version once it's all dressed up! Again, comments and questions welcome
  12. Dear Fellow Modellers These peculiar shaped IJN Destroyers were inspired by German WW1 designs. The gun armament was placed above the main deck to ensure all armament would function in heavy weather. The strange focsle reminds me of a whaler? This old kit had no portholes or details on the deck houses so I embarked on a month of scratch building and photo etch extravaganza! I think Mikazuki means 'full moon' Hope you like it? Andrew
  13. The 'triple flying deck' aircraft carrier Akagi of 1929 must have been one of the most extraordinary ships to encounter on the sea in its day. This approach was inspired by the experiments of the Royal Navy with Furious, Courageous and Glorious. The system allowed aircraft to be launched and land at the same time. Turned out people weren't too keen on starting their take off run inside a hanger! This is the 1/700 Hasegawa kit. I spent a lot of time trying to improve the sponsons with PE and referring to photos on the AJ Press Akagi vol 1 book to get the fit right for 1929 before the island was added. Building and painting the biplanes with Flyhawk PE took about a week - dratted things! There is a Hasegawa PE set for those lattice flight deck supports. Unfortunately they don't mate well with the hull, so lots of extra work -gurrrrh. I used lycra thread as the cross bracing between the supports. Hope you like it? Andrew
  14. My first project wrapped up this year and also first vessels ever. There are many flaws in the kits, yet I am rather happy with the result. I hope you like it WIP pictures (sort of) can be found here.
  15. Hello, this is my first take on vessels in a scale. These are 1/700 from Hobby Boss. I'm about to apply clear gloss varnish and put the decals on. I'm welcoming any hints for weathering
  16. Hello Shipmates Here is the Fujimi 1/700 IJN battleship Hiei with Fujimi PE set and Veteran Models turret set. I imagine it at a warm anchorage somewhere off the coast of China perhaps? Originally a battlecruiser based on the Royal Navy Lion/Tiger class. Probably these Kongo class ships were the most useful and used heavy units in the IJN. The Hiei was named after a mountain near Kyoto (which I have visited) and sunk at Guadalcanal in 1942. Been at it on and off since 2011! Andrew
  17. I will not go on too much again why I did this, only to say, it's been great fun.The build is on this link ,why it came about. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234943489-hms-eagle-invincible-class-1700-revell-class-what-if/
  18. HMS Hermes served with the Royal Navy from 1959 to 1984 and still is in service with the India Navy as INS Viraat . Another great kit from Orange hobby, this kit is so good, only need to add some railings to the walkways around the funnel. It comes with a excellent P.E. set and all of it gets used, good decals, you only get 2 SeaHarriers and 2 Seakings, but can buy extras ones and Harriers come with a tug and tow bar ,I also added a Wessex, RAF Harriers and a Chinook from John (BFM).Vehicles from WEM again resin. The Escort HMS Battleaxe a Type 22 Batch 1 Frigate from White Ensign models, needed a lot a work to bring it up to Hermes standard.Last thing, not sure about having the blades look like they are moving on the Chinook, time will tell. Both kits are resin models. The figures are all Eduard. Build for HMS Hermes http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234958877-1700-hms-hermes-1982-orangehobby-resinpe/ Build for HMS Battleaxe http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234943484-hms-battleaxe-type-22-1700-wem-resin-kit/ Enjoy
  19. Hi Everyone, Here is my next project for duing my week off. The Dragon 1/700 scale kit of the Pennsylvania class battleship USS Arizona BB-39. This kit includes photo etched parts along with some brass anchor chain and also includes 2 Japanese Navy torpedo bombers in clear plastic. This kit does not include a display stand for the ship, however the bottom of the hull is flat so the ship can sit on the bottom of the hull, however I intend to try and design a custom stand for the ship. Anyway here are the photos of the sprues. Anyway I will be making a start on this kit tomorrow. Rick
  20. Noted today on Hobby easy site Orange Hobby have got a number of new kits coming out. HMS Cornwall Type 22 batch 3 frigate and Pegasus class Hydrofoil plus a Tug and a number OF helicopter and armour sets.
  21. Hi all, I have been working hard on our house since the move but I have found the time to squeeze in a few small projects here and there. A failed attempt at a train (lost bits during the move), a couple of Battlestar Viper models that I enjoyed and then this…the RMS Titanic 1/700 from Revell. Overall I really enjoyed the build, not too many issues to sort. A bit fiddly in places and the transfers went all silver on me (against the black) – if anyone has any ideas on this please let me know! For your enjoyment. Thanks for looking. Leigh.
  22. Afternoon all. Just down the road from me is the wreck of HMVS Cerberus, a Breastwork monitor built in the 1860's for the Victorian Colonial Navy. With a piece of maritime history so close and a model of the ship that didn't quite work out in building, I've done it as the wreck. Hers a link to the work in Progress http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234955214-hmvs-cerberus-1700/ So on with the pics. So its been a learning experiance and I'm glad its finished, But I hope you like it. Thanks for looking Cheers Callum
