Good afternoon. Does anyone know of any German pre-dreadnought battleships in 1/350? I don't mind if the kit is resin or plastic, I just want to know if there are any. Thank you.

Just finished - HM Submarine Holland I - made from a plastic knitting needle and plastic card. It isn't perfect - but then my eyesight isn't either - but it makes for an interesting model of the Royal Navy's first submarine. It's only 56mm (2.5in) long - and the camera makes it look worse - honest! Here it is next to a Russian Typhoon.... More photos - including 'build' photos - here. Ken

Don't know if it is curiosity right now or intent, but I'm wondering if anyone knows where to find plans for this great little lady? I have a hankering for 1/350, but the only ones I've seen available for the Langley are expensive resin models that would be fine but for the price. I can't plunk 400 bucks down on a model. Crazy stuff. But, if I had plans of the collier Jupiter as well as the Langley, perhaps it is something I might scratch build at some date. So, that's the question? Where could I get said plans, for the hull as well as the superstructure and flight deck? Thom.

USS Parche SSN-683 - 1/350 scale conversion
Flankerman posted a topic in Work in Progress - Maritime
The USS Parche was a lengthened Sturgeon class boat converted for 'Special Operations' I'm using to Mikro-Mir USS Sturgeon kits, suitable chopped, to make the lengthened hull........ The front of one hull is joined to the rear of a second hull to make the new one...... ...... and strengthened on the inside with strips of plastic card........ A coat of grey primer shows that the various joins have been filled and sanded down to eliminate all traces of the surgery.... Next job is to scratch that forward decking...... Ken- 12 replies

1/350 Moebius Seaview Submarine
Lee Chambers posted a topic in Ready for Inspection - SF & RealSpace
I decided to drag out of my stash this old kit that I had for 15 years, I thought it was about time to give it its sea trials. I've used fibre optics to light the rear fins and sail and some smds for the bow lighting and 1 red led for the interior lighting. I added a floor for the decking and some old photo etch on the walls that is just about visible through the tiny windows. I tried to build the diorama as close to the screen capture from the original 17 foot model. I hope you enjoy the Voyage.- 11 replies

Had a search through the forum and this kit comes up a few times in its various guises. I have the 78030 kit, which if Scalemates is correct is the same basis as 78031, however I'm thinking of doing a wooden deck, probably a must. Looking around these are available for the various kit numbers, but the deck for 78030 is (obviously) more expensive, than others, apart from the fancy 78025. Anyone any ideas on the differences between the sets, what will fit the 78030 kit and what wont? Don't think I can stretch to the additional extras, either price wise or with my fat fingers! cheers all

I've just taken delivery of this resin kit by Blue Ridge Models - via Freetime Hobbies. I must say I'm happy with the service from Freetime - and very impressed by the quality of the kit, it's packaging and presentation. I'm less impressed with Royal Mail / UK Customs - for slapping on a whopping VAT charge on top of the already expensive kit plus postage. Anyway - on with the photos...... The artwork on the front of the strong carboard box. Rear artwork.... Impressive packaging - everything protected in foam - and well printed coloured instructions. The parts appear to be bubble free, are superbly cast - and the kit includes etched brass and decals. My bank balance has taken a bit of a hit (kit + Postage + VAT) - but there is a silver lining - the foam parts will come in handy - and I get a free copy of the newspaper used in the packing...... I'll get started as soon as I come back from my Danube River Cruise.... Ken

Ever since making the Royal Navy covert ops submarine HMS Spartan - I'm really getting into these shadowy subs from the Cold War. My next conversion is the USS Seawolf SSN-575 - the second nuclear boat based on the USS Nautilus design. After serving for a few years, she was stretched by 52 feet for 'Special Projects' work - with side thrusters for delicate maneouvering. I'm using TWO Mikro-Mir Nautilus kits to stretch the hull - using these artists impressions I found on the internet.... Here, I've cut the two starboard hull halves into front and rear sections ready for joining. I've also moved the anchor recess further forward and drilled the holes for the side thrusters.... It isn't really banana shaped - it isn't glued yet and the camera lens distorts it a bit. I've also been researching (trawling the internet, saving photos) the USS Parche - a Sturgeon Class boat stretched by 100 ft for naughty work. Should be easy enough to model using two Mikro-Mir Sturgeons. Ken

Just finished - the excellent Blue Ridge Models 1/350 scale resin kit of the experimental submarine USS Albacore AGSS-569.... Albacore was a diesel sub - used to test the 'teardrop' shaped hull form - with various combinations of dive planes, propellers and other hydrodynamic systems... The Blue Ridge resin kit provides 3 variations of propeller arrangement - plus the final cruciform tail layout... It is an excellent kit - but the etched brass props are very delicate - especially the final contra-prop layout that I chose to do...... Another one for the collection. WIP thread is here. Ken

Having just started the Blue Ridge resin kit of the USS Albacore - I was struck by how similar she was to the Royal Navy's first submarine, HMS Holland. The same teardrop-shaped hull, rear mounted propellers etc - it seems that nothing is new. Anyway, I thought I'd have a go at scratching HMS Holland - so I found some drawings and photos online and scaled them down to 1/350 scale. Conveniently, the hull is 10mm dia in this scale - so I carved out the teardop shape using a 10mm dia plastic knitting needle.... The flat decking is from plastic card cut to shape - and blended in with filler - (it still needs work)...... It won't be museum quality - it is only 56mm long and my eyesight isn't what it was - but it will show just how small she was and will add to my growing submarine collection. Ken

Hi All With interested being shown in Paul E Ton Kit,Instead of Hijacking his build, I will show what I have done so far. I will skid the pics of the model, because the same as Paul E, Straight on to the build. It has as a lot a wooden deck ,I was happy until my ex naval buddies ,said it was too dark, already too far to change,so all a could do was weather it by dry brushing white to tone it down. Added detail on bridge and funnel, even added hinges on the lockers, very sad.

Typhoon Class SSBN - Hobby Boss 1/350 scale
Flankerman posted a topic in Work in Progress - Maritime
Just when I thought I had enough submarine kits (see :- http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234970734-new-1350-scale-submarines-uss-g-washington-hms-m1-etc/)to be getting on with, up pops the postman with this new kit from Hobby Boss. I ordered it from Hobby Easy on 15 November and it was delivered today (22nd) - 7 days door-to-door - excellent service Despite its size, it is quite a simple kit - the hull is in upper and lower halves with a separate 'sail'. The most numerous parts are the missiles - 24 tubes each in two halves, with 24 X 2-part missiles - plus all the caps and hatches. Alternate etched-brass propellers are provided and the small decal sheet gives markings for the depth numbers and escape hatches - but not the prominent white waterline markings around the whole hull. It's a huge model - 50cm long and 6.5cm wide! This sprue is repeated 4 times - to provide the 24 missiles and tubes etc.... Final sprue with sail (with alternate top) plus the propellers and diving planes (the front ones work!!).... Alternate etched-brass propellers..... I'm not sure about the acoustic tile detail - is it overdone ??? Some photos show the hull completely smooth - other pictures show the tiles - maybe a trick of the light ??? I chose this HB kit over the Micro-Mir version because I wanted to have the missiles on display - I'm not sure what the MM version is like ?? Ken- 32 replies

Just finished.... the latest Mikro-Mir 1/350 scale kit of the Royal Navy nuclear ballistic missile submarine HMS Resolution.... It was a simple build - and a boring finish! Why are British subs so bland?? - all over black, no pennant number, little in the way of contrast... Mine is 'off-black' (Volvo Dark Grey) - with a matt black anti-slip deck (although you can't see it very well!) Still, a great little kit - thanks Mikro-Mir The only etched part in this release is the seven-bladed propeller..... Keep them coming Mikro-Mir Ken

Just added this to my collection of 1/350 scale submarines...... Its the 1/350 scale Bronco Models USS Seawolf........ Its a simple kit with upper and lower hull halves, 3-part 'sail' - plus dive planes, propulsor and masts. Whilst trawling the internet for images, I came across photos of her predecessor namesake - USS Seawolf, SSN-575 - an altogether more interesting sub. A stretched Nautilus Class converted as a 'Special Projects' boat - with a 52ft hull extension for covert ops. http://www.seawolf-ssn575.com/ssn575/images/Seawolf_SSN-575_1-13-08_004.jpg So I've sent off for two Mikro-Mir Nautilus kits - I feel a conversion coming on...... (The Ready for inspection thread can be found here.) This is the "Russian Navy SSGN Oscar II Class Kursk Cruise Missile Submarine" kit from HobbyBoss, in 1:350 scale. Length: 440mm Width: 52mm Parts: 143, inclucing 7 parts photo etch (PE name plate) (Most are missile parts probably) I had so much fun making my submarine models, that I might as well start on this one now. It is a little big for my Ikea "Detolf" glass cabinet, so I will have to get another cabinet soon, or I can at least place the model diagonally inside the cabinet for now. Please let me know if anyone knows how to best cover the openings around the glass doors in cabinets in general, so that dust won't enter in between the gaps when the doors are shut. I think I have seen some kind of brush-like tape, but I wouldn't know where to find such a thing. I think I will model this submarine with the hatches closed, for all the launch tubes. I am not a fan for having open panels on my models unfortunately. The painting scheme that come with the kit indicates a black and red color for the hull. The decals are few and small'ish. Unlike the Akula model, which comes with decals for a big white line around the hull.

Note: The finished model can be found here. This is the "USS Los Angeles Class SSN-688/VLS/688i *3 in 1" kit in 1:350 scale from HobbyBoss. I think I did a great job getting that nice surface finish in the end with my other submarine model that I finished some time ago, and I hope I can repeat that success here. I am going for the oldest version here, as I kind of like the fins on the conning tower. Those fins are removed on the 688i variant. I have no interest in the VLS variant. First step will be to glue the two big halves together and try to get as good of a connection as possible, and then try to sand it all down to get the smoothest result. This is important, because any subtle gap between those two parts will show after having airbrushed the model. For color, I will try using Vallejo Nato Black this time, and not just black. Hopefully, the hull will be gray'ish enough for me to add some black Tamiya panel line accent color to make the details on the hull pop. As for the stand, although it is tempting to put a metallic color on it, I think I should simply go for piano gloss black, and sand off the letters on the photo etched name plate. That way the stand looks the same as with my other submarine models from HobbyBoss. The color scheme for this submarine is mostly hull red for the lower part, and black for the top side, with some kind of "spotted cow" pattern on the tower pieces. Looking at the schematics, there is a giant bull decal that goes onto the hull at the front, but I think I will not put it on the model.

Hello all you floaty types, I'm hoping you might lend me some of your vast knowledge as regards kit availability. I've recently had somewhat of a hankering to build a ship, a hankering somewhat strengthened by playing a lot of Atlantic Fleet on my PC. Whilst researching some of the ships available in the game I came across a local connection in that Blyth (the town in Northumberland I am unfortunately a resident of) was the site of a shipyard that produced several Castle, Flower, River, Bangor and Bay class ships during the Second World War. As well as completing the conversion of the first escort carrier from Hannover to HMS Audacity. Now, knowing very little about ships in general with no nautical family connects and with even less knowledge about model ships I'm wondering if any of you fine chaps or chapettes might be able to help me in my search for one of these classes of ships that I could make in to a suitable Blyth built version? Ideally I'm not looking for something massive (so the Revell Flower Class is out of the window) but I would still like something with a bit of presence (12" or so) as such I was thinking something in between 1/144 and 1/350 might work well for most of these ships apart from the Audacity. But scratchbuilding is out due to limited time and even more limited ability. So, fine people of the Maritime Modelling forum, is there anything out there? Cheers, Paul

Bought at Telford to try out my Alclad technique: White aluminium over endlessly micromeshed Alclad grey primer. Contrast panels in flat aluminium and pod tips in steel. Finished last week but was so rapid in build (4 days), that I totally forgot to post RFI...those gamma rays are beginning to get to us professor Frink! WIP here. For some reason, I get the urge to yell "Piiiigs in Space!!" when I see this. Was pleased with my barren Martian landscape. Short and sweet, got a whole pile of Bandai Yamato ships and a wacky Cosmostrator to do as well. Pegasus kit was good with no vices and cheap as chips. And remember, Today is not the Bright Tomorrow we were promised Yesterday. Anil

Another one just finished - Project 1710 'Mackrel' (Beluga Class) from Mikro-Mir..... This boat was a one-off design to test hydrodynamics, propulsors and boundary layer control techniques. Note the extreme streamlining and numerous sensors mounted on the hull... More photos of the kit here Ken

SMW 2015 Quickie- Luna 1/350 Rocketship
azureglo posted a topic in Work In Progress - SF & RealSpace
Greetings SF & RS BMers, I have returned from SMW2015 with a large haul and found this in there so what better way to reduce the stash than a quickie build and practise my Alclad skills. First off, ye actual box Sprue singular, note clever tabs to protect needle sharp nose and very, very shiny plastic. Portholes in with odourless cyano, injector pin marks filled with cyano/dental resin powder All sealed up but with a prominent seam that I'm trying out this black cyano also scored at SMW. Allegedly it dries rock hard and sands/scribes well- could be an alternative to the voodoo cyano/resin powder mix I use. Well that was an entertaining one and half hours, bed time now and lets see how my flex-i-files cope with the new filler tomorrow. Cheers Anil the Space Newbie
