Source: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234967246-148-republic-rf-84f-thunderflash-by-tanmodel-released/?p=2200681 Best candidate IMHO is the Sukhoi Su-17/-22M-4/UM-3 "Fitter". Several a/c preserved in the western museums, documents readily available in Central Europe, a lot of users, iconic end of Cold War a/c etc. To be followed. V.P.
  3. Hi folks, After checking with the Powers That Be it looks like I can join in with a big Crusader. This was a birthday present from my parents a year or two ago - I saw it discounted in the model shop and pointed it out to my dad who mumbled something. I looked a while later and it'd gone, so I asked if they could get another at that price. Mike said it was unlikely and so I gave up hope. Then it appeared wrapped in paper weeks later - result! They had both played it very cool and I was totally fooled. Anyway, it looks like a good kit, not over-complex although there are a lot of panels that probably won't fit that well if I close them up. Apparently the raised cooling vents on the nose should be faired in or sanded down and re-cut, but I think that might be more trouble than I want in such a visible area. Here are the bits, by the way: I'll be leaving out the invisible engine and all those etched fans, and I probably need to find some bombs since the armament seems a bit sophisticated for Vietnam? There are two schemes in the box - at the moment I'm leaning towards 400 NM Although there are some cool Marines schemes with the colourful strakes which look good, I currently only have the kit decals. Construction starts with the cockpit, which looks on the face of it quite good. I shall try and actually finish it - the generous deadline is great and I could do with actually building a model this year! Cheers, Will

  8. This'll be my entry: Photo credit and © Carl Woodend via Flickr A bang up to date, 31 Sq GR.4, post-Ellamy and Shader-ready! Probably ZA472, as it also has the code number 031. Don't know if it has the TARDIS upgrade, but it will for this build! There's a lot of work to be done as I have the Flightpath detail set and flaps set, plus all the other complications of making a 1/32 Revell kit (seams, soft detail, dodgy structures etc) © raf.mod.uk It'd help me if anyone could identify the store on the nearest pylon. Otherwise it'll be the standard Sky Shadow like the one in the background. Cheers, Al

  11. In July 1942, the Scots Greys finally were committed to the fighting, equipped with a mixture of Grant and Stuart tanks. Unlike most tank units in the Eighth Army, which were either predominantly fielding heavy/medium tanks or light tanks, the Scots Greys field 24 Grants and 21 Stuarts. Temporarily attached to the 22nd Armoured Brigade, the Scots Greys were placed with majority of the British heavy armour. Initially held in reserve on Ruweisat Ridge, the Scots Greys conducted a successful counter-attack against the German forces to plug a hole that had been created by the German attack. Attacking as though still a mounted regiment, the Scots Greys fought the Panzer IV's of the 21st Panzer Division, eventually driving them back.
  12. Hello! This is one of my tribute builds to salute "The Few" and one man who's story that never fails to touch my heart and inspire me. This is my build of Flying Officer Geoffrey Wellum's Spitfire Mk.Ia, K9998. For those of you who might not know, Geoffrey Wellum DFC was the youngest fighter pilot in the RAF during the Battle of Britain. He was eighteen years old. He flew all the way through the battle and then onto the siege of Malta in 1942. He published his memoir "First Light" when he was 80 years old and it has widely become known as one of the must-read accounts of the battle. I have wanted to build Geoff's 92 Sqn Mk.I a for ages! With the 75th anniversary this year, it seems quite appropriate to dust off Revell's 1/32 Spitfire. M.II. I did a little backdating and a lot of research and I think I have got this one right. (Still not sure though....) We all have our views about this kit, for me it's wonderful. It's a model of a Spitfire! That's all I need! With the kit, I also used Barracuda resin, Eduard PE and Xtradecal codes to make K9998 as there is no sheet with these markings currently available. I used Mr. Hobby RAF Earth/ RAF Dark Green for upper surfaces and Tamiya Sky for the under surfaces. I enjoyed this build immensely and will certainly build another one of these kits in the future, I think they are great! I hope you enjoy my tribute to the "The Few". Geoff Wellum once said: "If you remember one of us, then you must remember all of us"
  13. Hi all, I thought it was about time I did a WIP after lurking and posting for so long. Last year I built the Matchbox Sea Venom and enjoyed working in 1/32 so added a couple more big scale kits to my stash with the idea of doing one or two of them a year. This years kit will be this one: I've started, as is customary, in the cockpit and have added a few bits and bobs to busy up the kit parts, which are very good all things considered. My guide in this is the Modellers Data File on the Hunter and I'm just trying to achieve the impression of busyness rather than 100% accuracy: I think that will be enough extra's as most will be barely visible once the cockpit is closed up, next step is to paint it all black which will help to make all the additions disappear. The kit seat isn't too bad but it will need detail adding and the moulded on belts removing and replacing. So I'm considering an aftermarket item but will make my mind up later in the build as the seat can still be fitted after the fuselage is closed up. More as I make progress Regards Tom

  24. Hello! Here is my Revell/Momogram 1/32 Hurricane Mk.IIc. I have wanted a Hurricane in 1/32 for a long time but never came across one for a "good price". Eventually I saw this kit on an auction site and despite the vendor stating that a "few" parts had been glued together I thought I would bid a low price on it and see what happened..... What arrived on my workbench was as described, plus all the flying surfaces had been removed. Badly. After some bad language................. and a cup of tea I thought "Nothing ventured-nothing gained." So I played the cards I'd been dealt and set to work! This kit can easily be built OOB, but it screams for some more detail to be added! To this end, I re-scribed the airframe (not too well, but never mind!), modified the cannon barrels and the exhaust stubs. I purchased the Grey Matter resin cockpit which for me, was a real faff to put together as my right hand was not too well at the time. (its on the mend now!) It was very frustrating, but all of my red faced huffing and puffing gave way to a half decent office! With the cockpit out of the way, I made repairs to the moving surfaces and it was necessary to modify them slightly in order to get a good fit to the airframe. This is not museum quality work here, just good enough to please my own eye! Building was much easier after all that! Soon came the painting and I used Mr. Hobby RAF Dark Earth/RAF Middle Stone for the upper surface with my own mix of Tamiya Azure Blue on the lower surface. The kit decals despite their age, did appear to be usable but I did not want to risk it so I bought an aftermarket sheet made by Techmod. The scheme I chose was that of Hurricane BP588 from 33 Sqn. RAF, based in Libya during November 1942. It was the mount of Squadron Leader S.C Norris. Once all the markings were sealed, it was the fun bit-weathering! I used my own panel line wash and let it dry. Next step was to add some paint chipping with some Prismacolour pencils, first time I used this product, I need more practice but I like the results I ended up with. Last step was to spray my own mix of dust over the entire model to bring a uniform finish to the airframe. The display base was my usual home-made fare. And there we have it, a 1/32 Hurricane built on a budget! Hope you like this one!
  25. My 100th completion this year.
