  1. Hello, This is the HobbyBoss Spitfire Vb trop. The main issue with the kit was the windscreen that is not suitable for a tropical version. I grabbed one from the Revell 1/32 Spitfire IXc (I will later convert it into a PR XI). Also the seat, wheels, side door, propeller and guns have been replaced by after market parts. This aircaft was fittted with a internal mirror, not often seen on Spitfires. Hope you like it. Cheers. The actual aircraft (June 1943)
  2. Evening folk's next up on the table is Special Hobby's Mk1 Airacobra,I was at the Northern show last week and spied this kit on Kit's for Cash's stall for a cracking £30.I have to admit the P-39 is one of my favourite aircraft and to get it in this RAF boxing was a bonus I have a full build feature to reference in a past copy of MAI so I'm aware of the area's needing care,It'll be a slow burner as I've two other1/32 kit's on the go in our GB's and even re-visited the big Revell Heinkel 111 today which I'm trying to move on,anyway box art. And a fair amount of plastic in the box. A bonus in the box colour etched fret and hollowed resin exhaust's And finally lovely looking decal's and a comprehensive colour callout. Having built revell's re-boxing of their Seafire I'm aware just how good these "limited run" kit's are reading the build review all being well should be a substantial build when complete.
  3. Several years ago I started, and then stalled out on the 1/32 21 Century Toys Bf-109F. I asked vppelt68 if the kit in the photo would be considered as "25%" done and he gave me the green light. For those of who have not seen the 21 Century Toys models before these were release several years ago by a company that must have had the worst marketing team ever. What you see in the photo, plus decals (which I have to find, by the way) was offered at larger stores for $10-$12 US dollars. There where also offered at a much higher price in a preassembled, pre-painted version. Odd for a "normal" kit, several of the parts are SCREWED together and the hard plastic was not easy to bond. Small plugs were supplied to hide the screw heads and items like the landing gear were workable so you could display (play?) with the model gear up or gear down. . For $10 they were irresistible for modelers to gobble up despite their odd construction techniques. So, with Vppelt68's thumbs up I will try to rescue this one from the dreaded shelf of doom. 4. This was finished a while ago, but I have only got round to photographing it this week; the WiP is here. The big change here is the Aires cockpit set, an amount of work but worth it. I am fairly happy with the finish but the decals proved to be not as opaque as I would like, so some colour demarcations do show through in places. If you think the pitot looks a bit odd, the real one has subsequently been found and substituted!
  5. Hello all, Been off BM for a little while, lots of life happening at the moment - job change, trying to buy a house... Anyway, some modelling has taken place, including this classic 1/32 kit, that's been boxed by quite a few Japanese manufacturers - Doyusha and Swallow at least. I picked this up under a club table at Bolton for a bargain. It's at least a 1970s moulding (but so am I) but the surface detail is great- all recessed and riveted. There are some snags though - it was meant to be a motorised model (I think Tomy had the moulds first?) so there is a bizarrely shallow cockpit: So, some scratch building and raiding the spares box is needed. Luckily I had a spare pilot from the Hasegawa Tojo who could fill much of the void. So, here's what has been done so far: Skinning the interior with plasticard and strip, and various semi-accurate(ish) spare parts: IP from an ancient paper set of dials I got from somewhere - onto plasticard, with rough go at dial houses and wires... Floor, consoles, seat etc are plasticard and spares. And here's the pilot: Buttoned up - a nice fit overall: And how the IP sits in the cockpit: So, that's taken about a month on and off, hope to pick up speed now! More soon, Take care, Matt
  6. Hi folks Haven't seen many of these posted up yet so I thought I'd get in quick! The rivet counters have had a bit of a go at this, but it looks like a Mk.IX to me (and to 99.9% of everyone else I'd think). If you want a cheap, easy-to-build big Spit for your display shelf then look no further. Regards J A
  7. My chosen model is the Cyber Hobby Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3 kit in the markings of the 21st Squadron (Fliegerkompanie 21) of the Swiss Air Force (Schweizer Fliegertruppe). The picture was taken during Summer 1940 at Emmen Air Base. J-377 has the large fuselage Swiss cross introduced in April 1940, but still the roundels under the wings from when the aircraft was delivered (J-313 behind it has the square underwing wakings introduced at the same time as the fuselage markings). J-377 was taken off charge on 28 December 1949 together with all the other remaining Me 109 DBs. Before you get stuck into me about the title, which you think should be Bf 109 E-3, the Emil was known in Switzerland as Me 109 DB and was so mentioned in official documents! And the Doras purchased at the same time were Me 109 Jumo ... Switzerland was the largest export customer of the Emil with a purchase of 80 aircraft, purchased in two lots of 30 and 50 aircraft between Mai 1939 and April 1940, produced at the "Werk Regensburg" (and an additional 9 built from spare parts later). I always wanted to build a Swiss 109 E, but never thought doing it in the large scale. Should be a straight forward build I thought, but reading Georg Hoch's excellent book on the Swiss Messerschmitt 109s (also published in English by Schiffer) made it clear that it will be far from a straight forward build! Why you may ask. well the Swiss purchased the Emils without any weapons and radios! The idea behind that was to fit locally manufactured weapons and radios. In addition, the gun sight was a Revi 3c , the fitted control stick was a KG 11 which was similar to British control sticks and the seat Harness was attached in a different way for whatever reason as well... In a 1/72 scale model. these details are hardly noticeable, but not so in 1/32. The story on the purchase of the Messerschmitt fighters is fascinating and I highly recommend to read Georg Hoch's book which is a great read filled with anecdotes on the Me 109 operation in Switzerland. The following information is from this book: When purchasing the DBs, it was undecided what weapon configuration to use on the unarmed aircraft. At the end it was decided to use two 7.45 mm Fl MG 29 with 960 rounds above the engine and one 20 mm FF-K Oerlikon with 60 rounds in each wing. Compared to the armament installed in German Bf 109E-3 consisting of two 7.92 mm MG 17 with 2000 rounds and one 20mm MG FF in each wing, the Swiss weapons have to be seen as a step back. They also needed several modifications on the airframe to be fitted and had to be loaded manually and not electro-pneumatic as was the case with the German weapons. The Fl MG 29 had been mounted without any off-set and closer together (300 mm compared to 340 mm) which needed modifications of the engine cover and a new ammunition storage and feed which resulted in reduced ammunition by over half compared to the German arrangement. In regards to the radio equipment, it was planed to fit a French radio produced under license in Switzerland. But production got delayed due to France being occupied by Germany. The radio became finally available in limited quantities by the end of 1941, but its performance was poor. Three Flieger Kompannien received the new Me 109 DB in 1939 and Fliegerkompanie 21 was one of them. Originally no special markings had been painted onto the new aircraft. During the war in France, it became o common occurrence that German aircraft flew into Swiss airspace, resulting in several aerial combats with Swiss aircraft including the 109s. The first German aircraft, a Heinkel He 111 was shot down on 10th of May and several more followed until early June. Under the pressure from the German government, the Swiss Air Force stoped attacking intruding aircraft there after. This resulted in very low spirit of the Swiss flying personnel. To lift the spirit, it was decided that it is now acceptable that the Fliegerkompanien are decorating their aircraft with the squadron markings - which was a sharkmouth for Fliegerkompanie 21. Enough about the history. I began this build over Easter - completely forgetting about this STGB coming up , but the progress is well below the 25% mark. The Cyber Hobby kit is apparently the most accurate 109 E in 1/32. As I love accessories I got a few too. My plan is to build the model with the engine covered, but incorporating all the modifications the Swiss aircraft had at the time the picture was taken in Summer 1940. But first some riveting was in place as the Cyber Hobby cit looks a bit bare when it comes to rivets - strangely there are some on the kit here and there. I used some drawings to mark where the rivets go. Some pictures are helpful too. Rosie the Riveter does most of the work. And it does make a difference - braking down the monotony of the large surface. The fuselage was next. And several days later, It was all done. Strangely, Cyber Hobby has positive rivets at several places where there shouldn't be any. The cockpit of the Swiss 109 E has some noticeable differences of which most are on the Instrument panel Most of the changes circled in red are for the weapons - Top to bottom, two pulleys to arm the two Fl MG 29. Don't know what the handle is at the right. Below is the FF-K cannon selection switch and the ammunition counter. Also note the KG 11 control stick I wanted to incorporate these changes on this build which needed a bit of scratch building. And all together. I also made the KG 11 control stick by using a CMK resin control stick intended for the Hawker Tempest. It was a reasonable starting point, but some modifications where needed. Not perfect, but close enough. That is where I am at the moment. Cheers, Peter
  8. Folks I'm doing the Trumpeter 1/32 Lightning with the Whirlybird conversion. I'm at the decalling stage but Trumpeter's serials are bigger than the supplied Xtradecal sheet. Can somebody please tell me what size the serials would be in 1/1 scale for fuselage & underwing, so I can scale down. thanks Steve.
  9. Another WNW kit. I'm really beginning to enjoy these and the more rigging I do the more confident I am with it. I'm still having problems with turnbuckle alignment but next time I'll fix the rigging to the turnbuckle then glue to the wing. More of a fiddle but the turnbuckles should then be in line with the rigging. All OOTB apart from the Gaspatch turnbuckles. EZ line for the rigging. I understand that these didn't get too weathered so apart from a bit of dust/dirt from the wheels I'll leave alone. One final thing-I really need to become proficient at bending the Spandau etched brass jacket as solid plastic does detract from the finished result.
  10. Hi Everyone My B17 Mk III is coming along nicely but I don't have any real progress pictures at the moment as theres not much to show. However for my summer build I've decided on Special Hobby's rather nice 1/32 Hawker Tempest II. It will be built OOB as its the "High Tech" flavoured version so you get everything you need to build what I hope will be a crackin' model. Cheers Iain
  11. Some 50 years ago I have started building a collection of 1/32 open roadsters (2- and 4-seaters) from the motoring "Golden Era" 1920-50. This was THE time of Airfix in this area: Blower Bentley, MG K3, Alfa 8C 2300 and Bugatti T35. Later they were joined by Matchbox series of SS100, Mercedes SSKL, Bugatti T59, MG TC and Aston Martin Ulster. And then everything stopped - since the 70s nothing new appeared. Where are all these Sunbeam-Talbots, Rileys, Lagondas, Delages, XK120/140s, early Ferrari barchettas and so on ? Are there any chances for my collection to grow? Cheers Michael
  12. Does anyone know where I can find a set of decals for a standard modern German F-4F in 1/32 scale, such as the JG74 decals in Revell's '50th Anniversary' kit 04743? I've contacted Revell Germany but they no longer have any in stock. Thanks. FH67
  13. My latest effort. This FLY's 1/32 Hurricane IIC finished as nightfighter BE581 JX-E "Night Reaper" flown by 1 Sqn ace Flt Lt Karel Kuttelwascher DFC during operations from RAF Tangmere. I found this a tricky kit to build. As mentioned in many reviews, the landing gear bay was very awkward and had to be sanded to within an inch of its life to ensure a fit. It fits snugly against the frame of the cockpit and took a lot of fettling to make the centre lower wing section fit. The outer wing fit wasn't too easy either. Finished with a brush and Xtracrylix Ocean Grey and Dark Green on the top, Revel gloss black on the underside. The decals are very nice went on a treat.
  14. Hello fellow modellers, I would like to share my latest build with you. Since the Mosquito is a British plane, I think here is where 'she' belongs... Mosquito B Mk. IV Series II (Film Production Unit - FPU 1944) Serial No. DZ414, Callsign 'O' Orange with 'camera' mission markings... DZ414 was handpicked out at Hatfield Aerodrome (The De Havilland Factory) on 22. December 1942 by Flt Lt C.E.S. Patterson for service with the FPU ( RAF Film Production Unit). He subsequently flew DZ414 for 20.000 of its 24.000 miles, including its debut operation to L’Orient on 14. February 1943 in the wake of the 466-bomber raid staged the night before, the night bombing attack on Berlin on 20/21 April 1943 (performed to coincide with Hitler’s birthday), when DZ414 was badly damaged by flak, the raids on Turin and Nürnburg, and on the long-range operation to Jena on 27. May. The second ‘B’ on the nose is for the Berlin operation on 13/14 May 1943. Whilst part of the 2nd TAF, DZ414 took part in many notable operations, including 14 anti-Diver sorties (V-1 Flying Bombs) flown by Flt Lt Vic Hester of No 613 Sqn. along with cameraman, Flg Off Oakley, between 19-25. June 1944. The aircraft also participated in the Amiens prison raid on 18 February 1944, its pilot Flt Lt Tony Wickham, making three passes over the burning prison so as to allow Plt Off Leigh Howard to film the flight of 255 of the 700 prisoners released through the breached walls. On 31. of October DZ414 participated in the attack on the Gestapo headquarters in Aarhus, Denmark, filming the attack on the buildings of Aarhus University. Finally, on 21. March 1945 DZ414 was flown by Fit Lt K L Greenwood of No 487 Sqn. RNZAF, as part of the force sent on the Shellhouse raid, Flg Off E Moore of the FPU filming the first wave attack on the building. Despite its wartime contribution, this veteran machine was SoC in October 1946 and unceremoniously scrapped. The kit is HK Models 1/32 Mosquito B Mk. IV Series II. Aftermarket photoetch parts from Eduard & Profimodeller + a lot of scratchbuilding. HGW seatbelts. The RAF Accumulator Trolley is a resin kit from Iconicair with a scratch built JAP Engine Generator on top. None of the kit glass was used, instead the vac-formed canopy/nose glass from Tasman was used. And finally, some detail photos of the build... The cockpit, a mix of Eduard and Profimodeller photoetch together wit a lot of scratch built details... Rolls-Royce engine with cooper and lead wire/piping, scratchbuild exhaust shrouds, header tank, air compressor etc... Bomb bay interior with 'scratched' bomb attachment crates... Paintwork is done with AK Interactive RAF Daylight Fighters set, Ammo of MIG British Cockpit Colors, washes and oil weathering... Kit decals were used together with stencils from Profimodeller and some homemade markings printed on decal paper. Thanks for watching! Regards: Kent
  15. to be continued Hawker Tempest Mk.II, 1/32 scale New hi-tech kit form Special Hobby inkl. HGW fabric seatbelts, masks, Photo-Etch and a lot of Resin parts I will try my new Tamiya spraycolors for this build: -AS29 grey green RAF -AS09 dark green RAF -AS10 ocean grey RAF -AS11 medium sea grey RAF Boxart I chose Tempest Mk.II, HF-X / MW774, No. 183 Sqn, RAF for the build. Regards, Oliver
  16. I'm starting a new build, 1/32 Revell EC135 Flying Bulls, it's seems this kit is a little weak, lots of flashing, ejection in marks, but with some work and mods it might become neat. Enjoy, hope you like it. Scratch instruments panel Base plate with some minor modifications, grids on the exhaust panels
  17. Have had this in the stash for 5 years now and it needs to be built! The Hasegawa 1/32nd General Dynamics F-16A (Kit #S20) which will be built OOB and in the mid 70's era 'Demonstrator' red/white/blue colour scheme, aircraft serial 75-0745. Michael
  18. After jumping in with my first 'Ready for Inspection' post, here's my first WIP. My enjoyment of the extra details and interior bits-and-bobs with the Tamiya 1/32 Corsair led to this, my second, 1/32nd scale build. It was a gift, and if I am honest - I have never been a lover of the P40 in any of its variants, and I really don't know why. It's an amazing looking aircraft, huge spinner, shoulder heavy, and so on... It's just never really grabbed me. But either way... Here goes. I will, as usual, be working with brush paints and rattle cans - as I do not (yet) own an airbrush. Sadly this means colours - both interior and exterior - are likely only vague approximations, and not mixed to historically accurate levels. As far as after-market add ons, I plan to use a mask for the canopy, and I have ordered the CMK resin undercarriage bays with canvas covers... This will be my first time using resin add-ons. So any advice regarding these particular items is welcome. From colouring (seems like a dark grey / green is best), to the fit and so on. Just seemed worth adding a bit of pazzazz to this kit. First up, I added some extra wire to the cockpit walls. This stuff is cast offs from by fuse-boxes on the pavement. I always see so much of it, and just pick it up and pop it in my bag. Anyway - stripped it down, and drilled some small holes to house the ends, then glued it down. Not sure how accurate, but at 1/32 I wanted to add some more visual detail. Then parts were primed with flat grey, as was the cockpit floor and rear cockpit wall. These were then sprayed lightly with aluminium silver before being lightly blotched with artists' watercolour masking fluid, which was left to dry (25 mins) before being sprayed at an angle with something close(ish) to an interior green. Then surfaces were brushed with an old toothbrush... (NB - A new fancy toothbrush with rubber nubbins seems to make this task significantly easier than doing it with a bristle-only brush). I then brush painted some details onto the side walls, added some spurious decals from past kits (once again - for visual effect at the expense of accuracy), did an oil wash of mixed black and brown, and finally made a mixed pigment from mainly 'mud green', with a touch of 'sand' and 'dark brown' which I splodged all over the foot-end of the floor. Next up is a matt varnish on it all, and then on to the instrument panel. Thanks for looking, and any comments most welcome.
  19. Scratch built 1/32 Saab 210 'Lilldraken' Derek
  20. Here's my most recent build. I finished it as Reluctant Dragon from VMF-213. Paints used were mostly Tamiya and the aftermarket used on the kit were seat belts by Wako, Barracudacast wheels and Monokio decals.
  21. Decided it's time to clear out some of my old stash, instead of selling perhaps i should build thes as that was what i originally intended......I think? So here goes: BF-109 G6 will be the late variant. He-111 H6 will be KG26 1H+GP ? JU88 will be a C-2 perhaps 4D+FH ? My problem for the outset is going to be finding RLM paints. I have all the required Luftwaffe RLM colours: 65, 70, 71, 74, 75, 76, 81 and even 02 but these are all MM enamels. I really would like to use acrylic even if its lacquer based like tamiya and Mr Hobby Colour (gunze). But i am skeptical on using MIG or Mr Hobby Aqueous. although they do RLM colour ranges. Vallejo is a non starter as i think there colours for RLM especially the model Air range are not that accurate. also i want paint that is tough after 24hr of curing like Tamiya. Open to suggestions.... Is the Mr Hobby Colour the way to go as it's probably tough and durable like tamiya?
  22. Started the Hobbyboss 1/32nd IL-2M Sturmovik. Unsurprisingly starts with the cockpit Then slotted the bulkhead in place with the seat, but still need to add the belts and weather down later Peter
  23. Hi all, As a kid I had Airfix's 1998 catalogue and, as a James Bond book and movie fan, I lusted after the 1/32 DB5 with the wild idea of adding my own cobbled-together Bond gadgets to it. I never entertained any idea of buying any other car model, only a silver DB5 - probably just as well, as 12-15-year-old me wouldn't have done it justice. Unfortunately I never found the kit and moved on. Now, with the recent re-release of it as a Starter Kit and having found it for almost half retail, I had to get it. Just as well it was half price as it's the 1967 mould and this is NOT worth NZ$34.99. So, armed with as many DB5 photos as I could download at work, I got started on my first ever car kit. The aim is to replicate the Goldfinger car with guns extended, tyre slasher out, and a suggestion of the other bits and bobs (except the bulletproof screen - my scribing game isn't up to that). As of this evening it appears thusly: It's hard to see in the photo but, along with the scratched control panel-armrest, I carefully sliced the top of the gear change stick almost off and painted a red "knob" for the ejector mechanism. The panel is from a 1/48 P-40 - not close to the real prop, but good enough for a closed-door, 1/32 scaled car. Likewise the rubber boot at the base of the gear stick is from a big Heller Super Frelon chopper. I'm having fun! Humbrol #11 is not the match for Aston Martin "Silver Birch" I've been led to believe, so I mixed the two included pottles with a dash of Tamiya Sky Grey. I think it's turned out well. You can see the painted body in the background, I'll wait til it's done to share a better pic.
  24. Hi everyone It seems that for a while know I have been struggling to find any enthusiasm for my projects. My 1/48 new tool Airfix Mk 1 Spitfire has stalled due to a broken part, my new tool 1/48 Hurricane has also stalled (just lost interest), my JP has been put away for another day (lack of enthusiasm) and I have several GB's that I've joined (again no get up and go there either) so what to do? I have the 1/32 Tamiya Spitfire Mk XVI in my stash so I'm going to start her as my long term project. She will be build mainly OOB except for RB productions Sutton Harness, some fuse wire, some resin stuff I have floating around and after market decals / masks (not too sure which markings yet) so wish me luck as I make a start. Cheers Iain
