  1. Roden have released two gorgeous kits of the Vickers Super VC10 in 1/144 scale. This iconic aircraft is available in two different versions, with either the distinctive BOAC livery or East African livery.
  2. Excluding 1/350 aircraft for ships, this is possibly the smallest model I have completed. This is the excellent Valom 1/144 Sopwith Pup. The moulding is very crisp. It includes a cockpit, which is very small and didn't quite fit without a shave around the edges. It includes 4 markings options, which give a variety colour options. The wing struts, and landing gear are photo etch, which was really easy to use in this scale. I frayed 'Rig-it', which is a lycra thread, down to a single thread and used super glue to apply the rigging. It took about 3 hours to rig. I'm pretty impressed with the model. It was a 3 day build. Now, Back to something full sized. Regards, Alan
  3. So over the last week or so I have mostly been playing with my new airbrush (H&S Silverline...oooh its nice ) and most of my WIP are on hold apart from this one, that I bought just to see what all the fuss was about RG kits. So It just a quick build with a few small paint details added and I just about fished with it. I still need to do the weapons and a few more stickers and top coat it all. This little kit is fantastic, Bandai have crammed so much detail into it, the full inner frame is stunning and I would definitely recommend you have a look at the RG line if you haven’t given one a go yet, I will be adding a few more to my wish list.
  4. Anigrand is to release in May 2016 a 1/144th Boeing YC-14 resin kit - ref. AA-4104 Source: http://www.anigrand.com/future_releases.htm V.P.
  5. Hi Chaps, Quick question for the airliner guys... I picked up the venerable Airfix BAC 1-11 airliner kit at Southern Expo this year and decided to build it straight away... The kit came with Aer Lingus decals included however they are a bit dodgy so have opted to use as many of the decals as possible but paint the green band from tail to nose along the windows (this will also avoid the need to punch through the decal to open up each window) So my question is what is a good match for the 1960's Aer Lingus green... Xtracolor do later Aer Lingus greens which are brighter.... it almost looks like BRG but was wondering if anyone knew a closer match. Thanks in advance
  6. Hi all, I'm building a 1/144 A319 at the moment, and to be geeky for geeks sake i'm painting it up in a fantasy livery of the imaginary airline I has when I was a kid... Take what you will from that. Either way, I need to find a decal sheet of standard lettering to form a random/made up registration. G - XXXX (or whatever). Ideally I need them in white. I can find some squarey RAF ones around, but if someone can point me towards some more generic ones, i'd be grateful. I can paint the livery but not the reg. Cheers, Chris
  7. Airbus A319 I completed a month ago. Not perfect, but getting better. I'm currently building the same kit again in a personalised livery (will post on here when done, if it succeeds) Goes together relatively easily. On my second time round i'll be paying more attention to the join lines on the engines. If you go for the CM56 option, i've noticed the starboard engine on both kits didn't fit together. The IVAE engines (pictured) seem to fit consistently. Chris
  8. I've had this model in my possession since the late 1980s, my dad put it together when I was a kid and its deteriorated to the point where I considered chucking it out - but rather than that I think I'd rather have a crack at restoring it The model is missing its horizontal stabilizers although I think I know the location of one. one engine has snapped off and the landing gear is mostly history. My intention is to strip the model completely and sand down the individual parts i couldnt sand away all of the paint as it was ingrained into the plastic. I used some paint stripper but this weakened the plastic and some parts snapped like all my models I like to display them flying so the gear will be up, this requires filler for this area
  9. Hello all you floaty types, I'm hoping you might lend me some of your vast knowledge as regards kit availability. I've recently had somewhat of a hankering to build a ship, a hankering somewhat strengthened by playing a lot of Atlantic Fleet on my PC. Whilst researching some of the ships available in the game I came across a local connection in that Blyth (the town in Northumberland I am unfortunately a resident of) was the site of a shipyard that produced several Castle, Flower, River, Bangor and Bay class ships during the Second World War. As well as completing the conversion of the first escort carrier from Hannover to HMS Audacity. Now, knowing very little about ships in general with no nautical family connects and with even less knowledge about model ships I'm wondering if any of you fine chaps or chapettes might be able to help me in my search for one of these classes of ships that I could make in to a suitable Blyth built version? Ideally I'm not looking for something massive (so the Revell Flower Class is out of the window) but I would still like something with a bit of presence (12" or so) as such I was thinking something in between 1/144 and 1/350 might work well for most of these ships apart from the Audacity. But scratchbuilding is out due to limited time and even more limited ability. So, fine people of the Maritime Modelling forum, is there anything out there? Cheers, Paul
  10. Just noticed this new release from Mark I Models on Modelimex- a 1/144 Buffalo kit! They've released them as 2-in-1 packs in three different boxings for different variants with US, Finnish and Far East markings: http://www.4pluspublications.com/en/scale-model-kits/mkm14444-f2a-1-buffalo-b-239 http://www.4pluspublications.com/en/scale-model-kits/mkm14445-f2a-2-buffalo-b-339-usbelgian http://www.4pluspublications.com/en/scale-model-kits/mkm14446-buffalo-mki-b-339-far-east Wonder if there are any injected 1/144 Ki-27 or Ki-43 kits for potential dogfight doubles...
  11. Whilst I'm messing around with the workshop upgrades I thought I'd carry out a feasibility study on scratch building in 1/144 for what I hope is an upcoming model Started with the barrel 5 diameters of brass tube soldered together, bit of car filler voila Underside with recoil cylinder fitted Work started on the base plate Quick tip for cutting bolts etc to same length Drill a hole slightly bigger in a piece of scrap, slip over the rod and slide scalpel across simples Thanks for looking Kev
  12. I've searched the forum via google and the not so good search function, got no response. Seems these two little bad boys managed to slip past our beady eyes! 13. There tend to be too much blue'ish light in my kitchen this early in the day, but I suppressed the blue a little as a post effect on the images, and hopefully the photos should look ok. Edit: Hrm, nope. Too much blueish lighting here. Have to go take some new photos. This model was airbrushed with Vallejo Air colors (USAF Light Gray and Nato Black). I used Humbrol Clear for the gloss coats (psi should ideally be at 5-6 I think). The four layers of gloss coat is ofc "hidden" by the final layer of Vallejo Matte varnish (diluted 50/50 with thinner). I'll post some more images later showing the stand that was painted with Vallejo's metallic 'Gunmetal Gray', once the battery on my digital camera has been recharged. I really like this kit, though the kit seem to have one subtle flaw at the front and to the side a bit, where you can see the seams from the two big pieces that doesn't get covered by the parts on the side. I used some photo etch and it was ok, though I had to mask the photo etch to paint the big parts both gray and black. I think ideally, the PE should have been made differently because of that. The WIP thread is here.
  14. I started these last year as part of the STGB Memorial Build for fellow Britmodeller Merv Milliken (Spike7451). I wanted to try and represent each nation that operates the Tornado and was keen to include an F.3 example. I scratch built some of the missing details such as the Secondary Heat Exchanger intake and other bits relevant to the aircraft modelled. Decals for the Luftwaffe ECR and the RAF F.3 are from the kits with some additional stencilling from a Hannants Xtradecal sheet. The Italian and Saudi examples came from Mark1's book of twelve Tornados I didn't get them over the line for that GB, so when the KUTA VIII GB came along at the back end of the year I decided that I would try to complete them for that. That GB finished a couple of weeks ago and here are the finished models. Tornado ECR 2011 Tigermeet - Revell 1/144 Tornado F.3 RAF 56 R Squadron (Firebirds) - Dragon 1/144 Tornado ECR Italian Air Force - Revell 1/144 Tornado IDS Royal Saudi Air Force - Revell 1/144 And finally a shot of all four together I had a lot of fun putting these together and I'm sure that there are lots of things that Merv would have pointed out had he still been with us, but I am pleased with the way they turned out. Apologies to those who followed these builds for repeating the photos here, but I wanted to share my efforts with the people who may not venture to the GB pages. Thanks for looking in. 15. Impressed with zvezdas 767 kit I purchased the new 777 kit which promises to be a vast improvement on the eastern express kit which I was tempted with until I heard about this one being released windows filled with a few exceptions.... don't want to lose any detail on the fuselage but i want those windows nice and smooth.... dare I say it but the kit hasnt went together as well as I had hoped...probs used excess milliput here but there was some niggly long gaps to fill. what i found with the 767 kit is although the fuselage halves looked like a seamless fit they kept coming apart in places (likley as i didnt use any plastic tabs on the inside) - didnt really learn as i didnt bother this time either! far too much milliput! the gap was probs a 5th the size of the milliput area. should be ok however wings glued and gaps filled. some sanding needed... cockpit filled, edges sanded, radome fitted, rudder fitted, satcom antenna's added. ready for paint already misleading size comparison to the MD-11.... the 777 kit is actually HUGE even in 1/144 - fuselage and wingspan nice clean undercoat for the fuselage. wings have had 3 coats already and will stay that colour with a light polish. for the fuselage im going with matt aluminium xtreme metal and for the underside lufthansa blue - same as aeroflot blue?
  16. Note: The Ready for Inspection thread can be found here. I think this one should be fairly quick to complete. The finish should end up looking great, now that I can use an airbrush. The fine molds kit comes with paint masks, something I have never used before. It didn't work well when I made my Tie fighter model, painting it with a brush over the masks, but now, I have an airbrush and I suspect that the result will be perfect. I think I only have to make sure there is enough adhesive on the masks, so that paint isn't blown in underneath the masks. Fyi, the paint masks is simply a single sticker sheet called "masking sticker". These are not individual and pre-cut masks, so I have to cut out each mask by the looks of it. So this kit is a box I had lying around for years. I even bought some photo etch for it, nothing much, a little PE and some resin parts in one pack. The PE was a bit hard to come by as I recall, and some other PE was iirc sold out. I don't think the PE is entirely accurate. Presumably it is somewhat abstracted, otherwise the detailing might have been too small for production I am guessing. The main color to be used, is the USAF Light Gray, being a warm gray, as opposed to cold or neutral gray. I had to excavate six holes for the resin parts, simple enough. The six PE parts fits nicely btw. I had already begun working on this kit, when I re-opened the box the other day. The insides of the two main hull pieces are painted black, as I thought it might perhaps prevent translucency to some degree (unsure if effective with only black enamel paint). Ideally, one would have to use both black and maybe silver paint on top of that to block any light passing through the plastic.
  17. Brengun is to release in 2016 1/144th Bachem Ba-349 Natter kits. - ref.BRP144001 - Bachem Ba-349A Natter - ref.BRP144002 - Bachem Ba-349 M52/M58 Natter Source: http://www.detailscaleview.com/2016/02/plus-model-and-brengun-stand-on.html V.P.
  18. Hello Everyone, I've decided to do these wee ones as a starter for this GB (I'm STILL waiting for my P-47's), these will be nothing fancy and straight out of the box builds. Not that there is much aftermarket stuff for Hurricanes in 1/144. These models where previously built by Speedman back in October last year for the BoB GB. Mine wont be as good as his, but I will give it a bloody good go! Onto the pictures... I have absolutely no idea what Yuki-kun is saying and the same goes for NASA-chan. Dont ask me to read what the box says either except for the obvious. Got to love the way that Japan always has to "cutify" everything... But it does work I guess... :/ This could be handy.... Couldn't resist, the box for the Wildcats says "Two Cats in a Box!" this one just has a funky picture of Yuki-kun... I dunno.. 4 of the 5 schemes that you can build out of the box (the last one is on the box). They all look pretty much the same except for option 2 and 5, which are the ones I am going to do. This is one of the two I am going to do, I love the blue on the wing leading edges and the bolt. I am going to assume that the squiggly lines are green. I will have to read up laters. The second picture, I really like this scheme as well for some reason. Sprue shots, I am not sure why there is a clear sprue (not being able to read Japanese) I guess I will never know. They are really clear tho... thats a good start I guess. I like how the wings go together, also the canopy that's normal plastic on the sandy sprue. That'll be useful when it comes to sorting out the framing, result! Got to love all of the decals that you get in a box from Sweet models. Quite a lot of choice here and maybe something I could use on other models. I also have another boxing, which I might decide to do depending how well these go. This is the same boxing that Speedman made. I got a few models from Sweet over the years, this isn't my full collection as I have a few more Zero's, Sea Kings and the Mustangs you can see on the shelf. If I do get time for the second batch it will be using this for some kind of diorama, it'll probably be crap tho... All of the lovely bits you get in the box. Yay! So hopefully I will get some time to start these soon. Kind Regards, Dazz
  19. Hi there, After the Air New Zealand A320 decals, Attach Before Flight has released another two decal sheets, this time for Azerbaijan Airlines: These two, just like the ANZ sheet are printed by BOA in the Czech Republic. I have bought the A320 sheet because some of these jets had/ have a bit of extra colour, carrying titles for the 1st European Games held in Azerbaijan's capital Baku in 2015. Maybe I'll go for a double build: Azerbaijan A320 and Indian Airlines A320... Cheers, Niki
  20. OK, a very late start for this one but I do have an excuse... It was an eBay bargain and I only got it in the post on Monday! I know it's 90% built and in primer but it's so well engineered that I had it together in under half an hour! This is truly an amazing kit! Barely any seams to deal with, it helped that the fuselage is split as upper and lower rather than left and right, and absolutely no need for filler. I had so much fun putting it together I really did forget to take some photos, I promise I'll get some as I paint it.
  21. When I was a kid I dreamt of becoming a Pilot when I grew up - not a fighter pilot, mind you - no I wanted to fly Hercules! Now I'm grown up (some would say too grown especially in the midwaist area! ) and my dream didn't come through. So lately I've become a bit nostalgic, and started to buy the kits of my childhood, including e.g. Airfix 1/72 Beagle Basset 206, which will be in Royal Air Force Transport Command livery. That started me going and I started buying more transportplanes in 1/72 for the smaller and 1/144 for the larger ones all which will be RAF-planes! So far I have: 1/72 Beagle Basset 206 1/72 C-130 1/72 Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer 1/144 C-130 1/144 Blackburn Beverley and a 1/144 VC-10, Britannia, C-17 and Comet on the way. I understand that there may be an 1/144 Argosy on the way this year and there is an Anigrand 1/144 Belfast but what more post WW2 RAF transport planes are there out there? Cheers Hans J
  22. Thanks to Col and the hosts for the go-ahead for this thread. The subject of this build is Airfix's RRS Discovery (Royal Research Ship), the ship that Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) used on his first expedition to Antartica in 1901-04. The last traditional three-masted ship built in Britain, Discovery was laid down in 1900, and launched in 1901. Built in Dundee of English oak, she was adapted and strengthened to work in pack ice. While she did have coal-fired steam engines, Discovery relied primarily on sail because the coal bunkers did not have sufficient capacity to take the ship on long voyages. She was rigged as a barque (or bark). More here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RRS_Discovery Scott was an Antartic explorer, famous in Britain for his journey to the South Pole, and his death on that journey (1912). More here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Falcon_Scott Google (or other search engines) will reveal lots more information. I may also refer to SWMBO for information - early Antartic exploration is one of her specialist subjects. This Airfix kit has been sitting in my loft for years (decades), having been started when I thought I was interested in N gauge (1:148) modelling - the kit itself is 1:144 scale. The current state of the model: The hull had been closed up, but painting some of the deck structures would have been difficult, so I split the hull, removing the deck. Shrouds (ratlines?) and vacform sails. In terms of parts attached, it comes in under 25% complete, with no rigging or painting attempted.
  23. Hello All, Minicraft 1/144 B-26 Marauder with print scale decals. Thought I'd have a go at the hairspray technique for the chipping of the paint. Seen some pics of these aircraft looking really weather beaten. Happy to answer questions if need be and thanks for looking. Welcome to 2016! Happy Modelling Ian
  24. Hi all, This sort of appeared from the HLJ sale in late November and after doing the Guncannon I thought it'd be another straightforward mojo-friendly project. It's the "early prototype" Guntank which has a rather '50s look about it, and could easily be some Soviet terror-weapon. It all fits together pretty well although I used some filler on the turret sides and underside to remove seams where the front section wraps around the sides, and where the two halves of the circular collar come together. I opted to leave most of the other seams though since they looked functional enough. The main body fit well although clamps were required to get a good join between the sides and the hull. This woundn't be a problem if you followed the instructions since the track units are supposed to be on little arms so they can come out from the hull when required. A bit like Wall-E's tracks/feet. But I wanted to glue mine so... The tracks are a bit weird if you've ever built a normal armour model. They're two mirror-image pieces each glued together along the vertical centreline. This means there are doubled up guide horns (which look a bit odd) and some impossible-to-fix-really seams in the wheels and bogie arms. I opted not to do much here and weather it up later. Plus the wheels and bogie bodies will cover a lot of it up. I did remove the mould line around the outside of each track, which meant sanding down every grip plate on the treads, and cleaning up in each recess. That was probably the longest job. I also realised when I took these pictures that I forgot to photograph the wheels, and indeed forget to prime them! There are a pile of other parts including the very poseable main guns and vulcan cannon arms: The "shoulders" are supposed to be in a canvas or similar cloth cover, so I glued them into a fixed pose and filled/sculpted the missing bits from CA and talc. Not very sophisticated but it ought to paint up nicely. Now I need to work out what colour it should be. I could do the same as the sandy Guncannon, but I'm thinking maybe dark green(simple splinter?) with the same orange/white helmet would look cool? Cheers, Will
