  1. I'm a little late to the party, me old seadogs, but I've been given the green light to put this one on. It's my current recreational build - I just started fiddling with some of the bits of what looked like an interesting and well presented kit. I remember thinking previously that it'd be a nice candidate for this very GB.....and carried on with this and that. Well, recently I had a spell of enthusiastic modelling on the little guy, and before I knew it the fuselage was joined and the lower wings were on! It was only then that I remembered the Salty Dogs.... What I've done has all been in March though, so I'm kindly flagged in for the duration 😎 I'll organise a few pictures to get the thread up to speed, and take it from there Cheers all, and thanks
  2. I did modeling when I was younger and now starting over again. I wanted a model that means something to me and it was this model. Wanted to do this mustang Big Beautiful Doll as saw this fly at Duxford.
  3. It's been a long held ambition of mine to build a Sopwith Triplane in a scale that suits my fingers and. 1.72 was never an option. I was some considerable age by the time I discovered that Australia's top scoring WW1 Ace pilot had the same name as me! If I'd have heard his name earlier I would surely have remembered it.. And it's not that I'm disinterested in aviation history. UK or English recollection of WW1 is very selective. The Triplane was flown exclusively by the Navy. Developed from the Pup and superceded by the Camel, the type cut a swathe through the opposition in its short career. The RFC were faring badly at the hands of the Flying Circuses in 1916 when RNAS squadrons were called in to bolster their ability. Naval 10 is perhaps the best known, with Black Flight, manned exclusively by Canadians it seems and lead by Collishaw, racking up a noteworthy tally of scores. Rob Little, flying with Naval 8, was hitting his stride as well. His tally was 4 prior to converting to the Triplanes. Then he really started making Hay! Another 27 "kills" he added to his score in the Tripe,, before racking up a further 16 in the Sopwith Camel. Sadly, like so many others, Little didn't make it to the end of hostilities but having totalled 47 before his death, he is Australia's Ace of Aces and a great Australian hero. I've actually just started a WIP before realising I could be posting here, perhaps for a bit of Aussie input and expertise. I'm not skilled in WW1 plane modelling, and been hesitant to start the build. But it's under way and I'll keep this updated with the slow progress. This is the win at auction.... And this is the kit.... The styrene parts are simple enough, THIS is the challenge for me... By way of trying out my aptitude for these kinds of planes, I started with the Pfalz D.III and it's almost finished. That's the impetus I needed to take a shot at the Sopwith, in honour of my namesake and one of Australia's best 🙂
  4. Since this is now taking most of my modelling time I thought I'd post a WIP thread. I'm building a Roden 1/48 DH4a in Aircraft Transport & Travel Livery Blue and Silver although opinion is divided as to wether it should be Black and Silver. I like hte blue so that's what I'm going to run with. First bit of assembley. It's a nice kit with sharp mouldings but everything is very thin and I had a lot of issues with alignments and fits. Not for beginners. Some prelimary paint work and breaking out the oil paints for some wood effects. Teeny tiny eylets (1mm OD) attached to the undercariage for rigging wires Rigging of same in progress Wheels on definitely needs a bit of cleaning up and retouching. Vertcal tail added. I'd have put the upper desk on the Cat (my avatar btw, hes 20 so I suppose I have to forgive him his foibles) knocked it off the desk and I can't find it. Not the rug in the room I model in is a very short pile so it's more space time anomaly than carpet monster. However as the Roden kit comes with all the parts for the DH4 bomber ( and about 10 other variants) , if I can't find the decking I can always use the one from that version with just a little cutting.
  5. Eduard's boxing of the Hasegawa Hawker Typhoon, with Resin 4 blade prop, and elevators. Painted with Tamiya acrylics throughout, weathered lightly with some oils and pastels. Lost one rocket, so it's being re-armed 🙂 Peter
  6. Hi Chaps, Well I have never managed 2 in a GB before but here I am going for number 3. I'm not sure if I'll finish as I'm on holiday for the start of July and I'm away for work 1 week as well so only really 2 weeks to get this done. Its been to the top of the pile a few times and gone under again but with 3 weeks left its about the only 1 I'm likely to get done before the deadline. This has been in my stash for many years as I thought it was the twin engined one when I bought it and was probably a bit disapointed when it arrived. The other ARBA kit I has was the Gloster Whittle which I built back in 2006 and was a great kit for its time. Special Hobby brought the Whittle out soon after so this will prompt some mainstream guys to produce it. The box, also seen with a picture on the lid. I built the Airfix Bedford MWD last week while deciding whether to start this or a Meteor. Fills the box or would do if it was a smaller box! 6 pieces of resin, 11 bits of pewter and 2 canopies. How hard can it be................! Will make a start this week end. Colin W
  7. Good evening all, I have decided to jump in with this GB. Over the last few weeks I broke my elbow and have generally been quite 'meh' about model making so I need something to get me going again. Now I know next to nowt about this aircraft type but saw this kit in the LHS for little more than a tenner. Here will be my build The moldings do look very nice and being modern Tamiya hopefully even I can make a half decent effort! So here are the kit shots. I haven't decided what option yet, there are 3 7/JG26 looks like blue underside and green / violet (?) Upper 2/ JG 27 sand/blue with mottled effect And finally Major Helmut Wick of JG2 looks like green/grey upper and blue lower So looking at my paints I have (All RLM) 76, 79, 04, 71, 02, 70, 72 Now not being an expert I reckon I have the blue (76), sand (79) and yellow (04) insides (02?) Leaving just the option 1 and 3 uppers. Not sure if I have what tamiya call grey violet (AS4) but what would AS3 (grey green) relate to? Or their mix of RLM grey and khaki or olive drab and khaki refer to. I am hoping this will be my Biggers headache lol Hope to get this kicking off by the weekend. Cheers now Bob
  8. Hi Everyone, I have seen this kit on several forums and I really want one. Especially after seeing this picture Does anyone know where I can get one ? Especially if it is in stock. I really want one for the SciFi GB which starts in a few weeks. Rick
