  1. Hi folks, I don't usually start build threads as I find it puts me under pressure. However, I feel that this one may have to be the exception. Look at that Roy Cross artwork goodness! I have wanted to make one of these for some time, but always chickened out. Hopefully, starting this thread will keep me focused. Here's the box contents. Cool old style exploded view instructions: I am planning a few improvements, although nothing too extensive. A few simple additions to the cockpit and turrets, some boxing in of the wheel wells, and some rivet reduction / rescribing are probably as far as I will go. The canopy fits well and has responded well to a bath in klear, but I'm a bit concerned about the ejector towers on the turret transparencies. I will have to see what I can do to improve things there. The rest of the kit I can live with, although there are some sink marks and pretty extensive warping of the wings and fuse halves. I have added the bomb bay roof to the upper fuse half in the picture above, and this has sorted the worst of the warping here. You can also see I have primed the engines and cowlings; not the most detail in the world here, but adequate for my purposes. I'll post more when I've made some progress with the interior. Regards Martin
  2. Hi folks, I had formed half a plan some time ago to try to accurise a Revell Boston III. Of the 3 classic kits of this version (Airfix, FROG, Revell*), I have formed an opinion that the last might be the 'best' to start from. Whether this is true or not, that's what I've gone with. However, not being able to source a Boston III, I got hold of this: I had a vague hope that this might include alternative bits for the glazed nose BIII. Well, I subsequently found it shouldn't have, but I got partially lucky: It may be possible to graft that onto the suitably butchered radar bose. We'll see. So, the first job on the list was to do something about the kit cowlings. These are basically cylindrical with a very bluff radius at the front, and look nothing like the more tapered Boston III cowling. So, I attacked both cowlings with some heavy duty sanding sticks and sometime later we got this: which looks better to my eye. So, why the filler? Yep, the plastic was actually quite thin where I sanded, and when I tried to use sprue soup to bulk it back up, it distorted what plastic was left. Hence my resorting to Milliput. Then I couldn't do that and leave the prop blades as they were, could I? So, more sanding, resulting in this. The top blades are modded, while the slightly cartoonish originals are below. As a bonus, the radar nose has sneaked into view at the right. Then for good measure, I painted up the engine parts. Again, they don't look very accurate, but you've got to draw the line somewhere. They were fun to paint up, though: Wheel hub details also don't look too bad. That's all for now. More soon. Rgds Martin *discounting the Matchbox, which is a later version
  3. Hi folks, Second build for me in this gb, one of Lawrence Weggery's SEAC Spitfire Vcs. I'll be using the new Airfix Vc kit and dk decals. I hope you appreciate the following photo skills 🤗. Although obviously Weggery was from the Antipodes, so I suppose its apt! Like with the Beau, I've just done a bit of pre-painting and some initial assembly of the cockpit: I was pleased with the way the ip decal settled down over the raised detail with micro-sol and -set. It also looks very realistic to me. Done some internal painting of the wheel wells: Not very exciting, but hey ho. More to come soon. Rgds, Martin
  4. Hi folks, Thanks for letting me join the gb. This build is going to be a RAAF TF.X produced in the UK and painted in the TSS camo scheme of EDSG / DSG / Sky. Decals are a very generous gift from @tonyot and I have a choice of 2 Beaus in this camo scheme, both from a dk decals sheet. Using the latest boxing of the Airfix kit with the very evocative artwork: Build will be oob, as I'm keen to get to the painting. Not done too much so far; just priming, spray-painting and some basic assembly. More soon, hopefully. Rgds Martin
  5. I am a brush and rattle-can painter, and although I have improved over the years, I have never produced a particularly realistic finish. Having seen a series of excellent finishes from someone on BM, I thought I'd try pastels. So, out came the AMT Ju 88C nightfighter which I built as an experiment. So, here's the result: What d'you think? Rgds Martin
  6. Hi folks, Just a placeholder for my second build, assuming my Ju52 build goes ok. The kit I will use is winging it's way to me as I type. No clues to its identity, beyond noting its an aircraft from my general period of interest and it's not yet on the GB build list. Rgds Martin
  7. Hi folks, Like Heather, I will be building the Ju52/3m; likely with a fading winter whitewash finish from the Eastern Front. At least that is the plan. Heather has saved me the trouble of displaying sprues shots, but here is the artwork on the classic black box: Knowing next to nothing about the '52, I will be raiding Heather's build thread for ideas. However, my plan is to build this as close to oob as I can. I have made a start. The plastic is quite hard and clean up of pieces is fast. I'm hoping it's not too brittle, as one of my fuse sides is a bit bent. Hopefully the interior and glass work will correct this, more or less: You may be able to see a slight short shot notch out of the rudder trailing edge of the far piece. Hopefully, milliput should solve this. Here's the interior: No assembly problems thus far. Once that's set, it'll get a scoosh of primer, ready for the RLM02 interior. I build slow, and I've got a few more things on the workbench. However, I hope to have this complete before Christmas, as I've got a second build planned for this GB. . . More soonish. Rgds Martin
  8. Hi everybody; after a couple of propeller builds, here I am back to a jet, and in 1/72! A few words to introduce this project: almost one year ago, I started the build of a Hasegawa 1/72 F-4 J Phantom II, this one: It was my first serious venture in 1/72 scale, and was a lot of fun. I learnt a lot from all the people who followed that WIP, and one in particular is Gene K; former USAF F4 pilot, he has been very helpful both in terms of technical info on the AC and in terms of modelling tips. Long story short, we became friends an I offered him, as a sort of way to thank him for the great help and as a tribute to his career, to build a model of one of the F4-s he has actually flown. He suggested the subject of this build, and not only that: he has actually donated me the two kits I'll be using for this, plus a lot of extras. Basically, following Gene's guidance, I'm going to modify an F-4 J Hase kit to become an F-4C, with the addition of parts coming from the greatly detailed MONOGRAM kit and a few aftermarkets (and some scratch building, of course ). This thread is going to be co-hosted together with Gene, and we'll go into more details in the next few posts. For now, what I have is: a completely cleared workbench (that is something totally new for me ) the kits Hasegawa parts to be added/modified: Nose sensor Stabs Seamless intakes, Gene's patented method Monogram parts: Tanks, pilons, gunpod etc Speed brakes and arrest hook Cockpit (amazing detail for a 1/72 injected kit!!!) Pilots!! One half fuselage has already been "treated" by Gene prior to sending me the kits, as an example to follow. He has also noted indications on the kit plastic Aftermarkets: Specific decals Stencils; these have been donated by another friend, Silvano (Phantom61 here on BM) AC Profile and most important thing: Now Gene will go into more detail about the project and the aircraft. Enjoy! Ciao
  9. Hi everybody; last August I was in California for a big family holiday/vacation and, among other things, I got the chance to visit the The Flying Leathernecks museum in Miramar, right next to the Marine Corps Air Station and just outside of San Diego. After the visit, we walked into their gift shop and my youngest daughter insisted on buying this kit, so that she and I would have built it together once home. Was I supposed to disappoint a 9 years old cute little girl? Not really! So I bought it and, after finally completing my 9 months build of the Italeri A-10A Thunderbolt II, I got started with this: Here's the airframe on display at the Flying Leathernecks: and there's an excellent walkaround of it from Bill Spidle on PrimePortal: http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/bill_spidle4/f4d-1_139177/ Since my daughter is actually participating into the build, it will be mainly OOB, even though I already have in mind a couple of ... improvements to be done along the way. 😉 Anyway, the kit looks pretty simple, only two sprues plus the transparents: The windshield and canopy are crystal clear form the box, but having recently experienced how tough and resistant to masking (even when leaving the masking tape on for a loooong time ... ) the Aqua Gloss coating is, I dipped them in it and left to cure overnight: This is the scheme I'm going to go for: it's a Marines airframe, of course, as a tribute to the museum and the great time we all had visiting it. Here's the decal sheet: although admittedly, one of the improvements I have in mind is to cut my own masks for most of them I hope you'll enjoy the build, please feel free to add any comments/pointers/tips any time Ciao
  10. Hello Britmodellers; here's my new project, the probably well known 1 72 Hasegawa F4-J Phantom II. I'm moving out of my comfort zone here, as I normally build in 1 48 scale, but I got this kit at bargain price and I decided (after a very challenging RE2002 from Italeri) to try with this. I intended to build this OOB, but then I got tempted along the way ... and I ordered the Eduard Pre-painted zoom set for the cockpit (hasn't arrived yet). Plus I sourced an old Eduard PE detail set at my local shop (sorry, forgot to take pics before starting cutting out pieces..) So I started with a quick dry-fit of the main parts: Fit is pretty good, a breath of fresh air compared to my previous build ... Probably a couple of tricky points from what I can see now: main fuselage to wings join and main air intakes to fuselage. Then it was time for som PE parts: first of all the speed brakes The moving part is made of two pieces, and you have to conform it to the kit parts before proceeding Then I removed the corresponding section on the wings The third PE part (sorry, I wouldn't know how to call this in English): Other side, this shows a bit how I did it I've also added some PE details in the wheel bay area Tail chute cover PE detail Next, it was time to start gluing the fuselage main section; I've added a reference tab to the lower part, to allow for a better alignment ..which turned out to be useless, as I had to enlarge the first pin hole towards the front (you see the corresponding pin on the above pic, top right corner) to have a good fit, so the tab isn't touching the opposite fuselage half. Gluing this per sections, trying to achieve a stronger adhesion: That's it for now. Comments, suggestions and any kind of tips are more then welcome. Ciao
  11. Hi all and I'm in with this one, to be built as a troop 'Slick' version. This GB needs choppers! Hopefully I can do a decent job with it. Cheers, Dermot
  12. Hi everyone and just finished this one for the excellent Battle of Britain GB here. You can read the WIP here but to recap: Kit: Airifx Mk.1A Spitfire new tool. Scale: 1/72 Build: Mostly OOB Extras: Tapes for seat belts, cut out cockpit hatch, replacement open vacform canopy Paints: Brushpainted throughout with Revell Aquacolours. Future, W&N Matt Varnish, Flory Models wash. Pencil weathering. Decals: RAF Hornchurch v Luftwaffe - Southern Expo Decals. The plane is R6626, 'XT-Y' flown by Flt Off Ron 'Ras' Berry of 603 Squadron, RAF Hornchurch as she appeared on 31 August 1940. According to what I've read....."On 31 August 1940, Flt. Off. Berry took off from RAF Hornchurch just before 1800 to intercept an incoming raid. The pilots intercepted the escorts of I/JG3 over South London. In a confused, running dogfight Flt Off Berry caught and shot down the Messerschmitt Bf109 flown by Oblt Helmut Rau at 1845. The 109 landed on the beach at Shoeburyness where the pilot was taken prisoner unhurt". Ron Berry served with distinction through the war and after with the RAF and rose to the rank of Air Commodore. You can read his remarkable obit here Dedicated to all who served at that time, including the six from my own country recognised on the memorial on London's Embankment. Thanks for looking. Dermot
