Folland Gnat T1 1:48 Airfix
Luke Piewalker replied to Luke Piewalker's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
I think I have enough Gnats for now. I did a silvery orange one in 1:72, I do think that scheme suits them particularly well, might give it another bash in the larger size at some point. -

Westland Whirlwind Mk 1 1:48 Trumpeter
Luke Piewalker replied to Luke Piewalker's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
I was trying to keep the tailplanes perpendicular, but they seemed to settle into a slight up angle. I was mostly concerned with making sure it was symmetrical by that point! -
Ahoy All. Here is my Standard Training Scheme Gnat. The 1:48 certainly suited my chunky fingers better than the 1:72 As can be seen my masking didn't go very well, I had a bit of trouble with the wing fit at the front, so there is a bit of a step on the intakes. It eventually got to my usual position of 'making it worse' so I called it done.

Ahoy chaps. Had a bit of a lay off but have recently completed a couple of builds. Here is my Trumpeter whirlwind It all went together ok. I wished I'd painted the nacelles before I attached them to the wings as it would have made my life a bit easier. As I have read elsewhere, the decals were pretty awful. They are on a very shiny sort of backing film and if they fold over on themselves straightening them back out is nigh on impossible. That and they fall apart as you can see by some of the holes in the roundels. The painting instructions were also a bit unhelpful, with no views of the inside of the nacelles and random blank bits. Anyhoo, it looks like a Whirlwind, so I'm happy

Had I been brave enough when I made my stealth Vulcan, I would have moved the intakes back while leaving the leading edge of the wing in the same place, moved the jet nozzles onto the top of the wing a bit further forward, and binned the tail entirely. Might have does some reshaping to the tailcone too. But in the end I wasn't brave enough, so I just painted it black

1/28 Revell Sopwith Camel
Luke Piewalker replied to Luke Piewalker's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
As I said, having tried to follow the instructions, I realised afterwards that there seemed to be a couple of vital omissions. They have you attaching the string for the rear end before you put the body together, which then means you would have to put decals on with string coming out the middle. After I realised that the instructions seemed to have missed out one hole entirely, and I'd put the string in different holes in either side, I detached the elevator control string, opened the holes that were closed by flash, then threaded the elevator string through in a continuous loop after I had put the decals on. I added another couple of details I got from pictures, like the white section on the strut with the air speed propellor on it. I also put a little tie around the bracing where it crosses over above the machine guns and superglued it in position as otherwise the bracing was resting on the guns which I didn't like. -
Ahoy Chaps. I was intending on taking a bit of a hiatus from model makering and focus on playing with trains for a while. But I thought some form of WW1 Centenary tribute build would be in order. So here is my build of the Revell 1.28 Sopwith Camel, No. 10 Squadron, Royal Naval Air Service, Teteghem, France, March 1918 All brush painted with Revell acrylics, except for some Humbrol Acrylic Flesh and Tamiya Semi-Gloss clear. This is obviously an example with the rarely seen upsidedown axle modification, because I'm an idiot... A lot of flash, sink marks and holes that hadn't quite made it all the way through. The instructions were a touch vague in parts, in others I would argue just plain wrong... Fit was a bit troublesome with a lot of the parts thicker on one half than the other, so there are a few somewhat impressive joins on it... The worst part is probably the fit of the ribs into the wing, trying to work out where to remove the plastic. Anyhoo, it looks like an aeroplane, sort of..

If it's the same one I built I remember there was some strangeness around the undercarriage that wawsn't clear on the instructions and I sorted afterwards after a good talking to myself. I'll work out how to explain it and get back to you later, although it could be it's just me that's that stupid

Yeah, tactical mistake not to shine some lights on it. -
Another one of my dubiously enpicturulated builds This was another one that I really just wanted to be over... but I got there (ish) Edited with new pictures.

Mostly the cheap availability of the small Vulcans, which even at this scale are still big enough for my fat fingers. That and I like Vulcans. And I was looking at something in digital camo and thought about what a Vulcan would look like in some different paint jobs/guises.

Maybe more battleship 'dazzle' than splinter... splinter1 splinter2 splinter3 A bit ropey close up but looks good from a distance. Started with Barley Grey and added the lighter and darker grey on top. Then finally added the blue grey and the blue for a bit of 'interest'

Does this mean it wasn't as whiffy as I thought?

A bi-Vulcan.... I'm not one for the plastic wrangling... a bit out of my comfort zone.. I did consider doing a 'desert storm' Vulcan but I'm not sure I could get the right shade of pink...
-
The only think I would like would be proper bomb doors on the bottom, but the idea is for 'quick and dirty' builds on these so I'll live with it.
-
Right, second Vulcan done. If you look carefully in the background of the winter pictures you may see what a Vulcan looks like in all over Barley Grey... But that's not how she'll end up....

I've posted this in the ready for inspection but thought I should post it here too. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234959018-whiffy-vulcan-winter-camo/ Ahoy again chaps. Second of the trilogy. I just though that a vulcan would look nice in black/white 'arctic' camo, so here she is. Inspired by the desert camo Vulcan at Red Flag 77, a decision was made to paint one in a black and white winter pattern for exercises at Goose Bay. Conditions were expected to be Friesian... Unfortunately when Wing Commander Killian-Joist saw the distinctly bovine pattern he ordered it repainted in it's normal colours forthwith. winter4 winter3 winter2 winter1

Did I mention it has trick engines.... with ultracool megacruise mode... errr.. Rolls Royce CommonwealthGamus... smaller... quieter... If I was more adventurous and skilled and prone to plastic wrangling I would have moved the engine nozzles forward onto the top of the wing B2 style, and possibly similar with the intakes. But it was really for me about a quick build with a quick paintjob to give the 'impression' rather than the finer details, and still having it look like a Vulcan. And with the 1:200 kits at £9.99 from Hannants...

I was originally going to add some dark gray parts in as well but decided the two shades of black was the way to go.
