  1. Hi Dazz, I think the decals will be the least of my problems, plus I have a clever backup plan for them! I haven't gotten very far at all with this due to other builds in progress. As mentioned earlier this model requires lots of prer work and cleaning up before you can veven get started. There's lots of flash and mould joins that need to be cleaned up, plus the positioning of the mould plugs!!!!! There's a special place in hell for the person who decided where they were to be positioned! Other limited run models I have built they seem to take care in the positioning of these! Anyway I've started on the intakes. it took quite a bit of time to get the joins right so that everything fitted correctly, but it looks to have been worth it. The intake internal joins are really good any will only require filling with two small pieces of stretched sprue, so I sound have nice smooth intakes. Plus I have started to join up the main interior components, which again required quite a bit more cleaning up to achieve nice clean joins. The side walls have a quilted fabric lining which is not present on this model, so I started to do that as well. Not the greatest until I realised that they needed to be finer so I will have a good chance to improve the “quilting”. Everything has pretty much been test fitted and cleaned up as required to achieve a nice clean fit, though I noticed that the tail trailing edge is way too thick when the fuselage is jointed together so that required a bit of elbow grease to sort out. The tail mod will be done once the fuselage is together as it will make the profiling easier. Unfortunately I have started my new work project (job) and will be very time limited to all my builds, so this one will be puts off until late October or November. Though time permitting I’ll try to do the odd little bit where I can.
  2. I've gotten no where really, just cleaned up (lots of work there), the intakes (quite a bit of work there) and the "quilting" on the cockpit side panels (glad thats going to be hidden! ) actually it's not that bad. I've just started my new shift roster so I won't get back to mine till late October or November!! So I'll be watching you!
  3. See resin has gotten into your blood.... I'm almost finished a Anigrand XF-103, wasn't an easy build, left the weapons bays open, not a goo idea! But still the 103 or 108 would be nice to see! Got you Dazz and Wayne. we're now at 23, can we make the 30??
  4. I don't think anyone will get upset at all it you start to clean up the parts and remove them from the plugs. As long as all the major assemblies still need to be done and painting as well I think we could even let some of the minor assemblies be started. As this build was thought up as a great chance for modellers to "break their cherries" as you say on resin, plus for closet resin fiends to "come out" .....again as they say. . This is to be a bit of a light hearted build where expert advice (????) is available to anyone silly enough to ask. Plus to show off some of the more unusual models that are around in resin. I for one would love to see some resin AFV's in the build, invite any others you know to come and join the fun. PS: the drinking of red wine is not required......but it does make the pain go away when you CA glue something backwards!
  5. works well, though it can be a wee bit hard to see the changes, though that will depend if you are using masks like I was. Watered right down the changes can be very subtle.
  6. arr Mish??? If F-14 GB II gets the go ahead for a March GB with 17 registered how do we go with 19? Or do we have to go with a vote???
  7. Have opened this up....... Come one come all...... ........................and don't forget the pizza and vino/birra!!!
  8. Well we are now getting very close to the end of this build! All major painting is finished and clear coats are done, in the end I had to use a rattle can for the matt coat, acrylic matt wasn’t available! Weathering is pretty much all done, so now good tidy up is required. The gun turret is giving me some grief, the gun unit just doesn’t want to fit into the main clear housing. Have done some surgery but may have to pull it apart and rebuild it. Formation and Nav lights done. Cowling and engine just held temporary in place with bluetac, pus cockpit just sitting there so I can see how the whole thing looks. Am very pleased with the general finish, almost exactly the look I was after. Bomb bay has to be finished, still a bit of work there plus the bombs themselves to be done. Families of dust bunnies have already moved in and are resisting eviction!!! Ooo those flaps are fragile!!!! The engine is almost done finally and doesn’t look too bad. Just a little bit of painting to complete, plus the prop needs to be weathered slightly. Probably a day’s work left till it’s done and dusted, which is lucky as of Monday I’ll be away for around 22 days out of every 28, with a new project in north west Australia. No fun for the wicked!
  9. are you sure ..........I just say that as in the two sets of tail stipes are different in the photos. The first two the stripe goes to a clearly shown point, the three colours are points, the last photo the colours are still stripes at the tip. They can't be the final stripes due to the artistry on the side of the aircraft. The photos here show it more clearly. http://a4-alley.x90x.net/A4-Alley/RNZAF-Skyhawks-page-2.html Those pictures to me show the new tail has already been fitted, but why add the strip. If your contacts know someone who worked on it they may be able to fill in the details.
  10. Yes it had pegs in the intakes, the wings would joint together cause of them either. Plus the best one they even managed to get a mould peg off center in the main intake where the center resen shaft goes! Forgot to take photo but Silver Fox will know what I mean, they're hopless! Ok I think I can help you out a little bit on this one.... Sorry don't have photos of other side. Interesting to note she still has TA-4G above her serial number. Could always go his far, looks like the paint shop guys had a bit of fun in the paint shop! An very interesting thing to note at this point she had the squared off tail of an TA-4K and the tail stripe is different, more like how it is when she was gold. The squadron badge is painted out side along, the roundels and tail flashare now the same colour as the body! There must have been some interim work done on her, I would asume they may have test flew her after the tail mods, but why the new paint job? These photos are courtesy of http://www.cambridgeairforce.org.nz/RNZAF_50th_Anniv_Skyhawk.html Would be interesting if someone else could build her in her final colour scheme, would look good all three together, or someone build her in her original RAN colours. Would be a nice tribute to her.
  11. Be afraid...... Spent over two hours just cleaning up some of the main bits! Have build resin models with less flash than this one, only save grace is that the plastic is lovely (a touch on the soft side) and very easy to work with. With a bit of time and lots of prep work you/we should be able to turn something nice out. What scheme are you going for?
  12. Have made some more progress on this little baby. Have finally finished the interior as must as I want to, again most of this will not be seen due to the wing and engine being in the way. Have to tidy up where the rear bulkhead and cowling meet up, there’s a horrible gap there, again no filler will be used just scrap and stretched sprue. Still have to paint the left hand gauge. The front lower section of the fuselage was then fitted, not the best fit, lots of work was required just to get it to fit. But in the end it only needed some sanding and Mr Hobby 500 to tidy up the joins. Started to get some of the struts sorted, not looking forward to this. Engine is pretty well done, started painting the nacelle but the red was too dark when painted over the aluminium so have to start again but this time with a white base. It should be ok maybe........ Getting close now to painting the fuselage which should be fun..........NOT. It’s white with red strips and they have to be painted, masking and trying to get it even will take a while..... I can see the rigging in the distance, maybe the fairies will do that job for me.......
  13. Ok it's been a while since I updated this or really did any work to it. Between the Avenger and the Macchi and work I’ve been a wee bit busy. Ok not an awful lot has happened, closed the fuselage and fitted the wings. Fuselage joins weren’t too bad, only needed a cleanup with the sanding sticks and some Mr Hobby 500 to sort out the joins. The wings fitted without any issues and the joints were so good only a very light sanding/polishing was required!! The engine nacelles are a different matter, as mentioned earlier the joins to the wings were horrible and the exhaust cowling to nacelle fit was equally as bad, but strips if sprue and Mr Hobby 500 fixed those. I was almost going to get away with now filler at all but......... The lower exhaust cut-out in the nacelle was just a square section, probably due to the way it was moulded, and I just could leave it like that. Strangely I have not read any reviews mentioning this issue, was for a while just going to leave it like that but ......... Some filler and a quick bit of shaping and it’s all sorted, have sealed it with liquid glue and will polish it tomorrow. Plus while I was doing that I made up some clear wing tip light as well. My new Ultracast props, can anyone see why I needed to replace the kit ones, again something that I’ve seen not picked up in some reviews. Ok I’m just waiting for some paint to arrive and then it’s on to painting, things should go really quickly from now on.
  14. Well the weathering s almost complete, just some tiding up and a final top coat of matt clear. I have included a couple of pictures of the process, though forgot to take some in between ones. The whole process takes a couple of hours and includes the washes and streaking of different coloured enamels to give the effects I’m after. The most important step is the good solid acrylic gloss clear (or matt no real difference) coat. This is the barrier between the paint finish and the weathering process as I use neat enamel thinners to wash the various materials off during the process. Enamel clear coats are no good, thinner eats it right off and non-clear coated acrylic paint does the same thing. But you must be careful anyway during the process as it is possible to remove the acrylic clear coat if you rub I too much. I like to leave the about 5 minutes between applications to allow the thinner to dry off and the clear coat to recover. slip, slop, slap, just splash it on and let it dry for about 10 minutes. A little bit of elbow work, but not too much and about 2 hours later..... As mentioned earlier the decals were very thick so I had to re-cut them along the panel lines as they just didn't want to conform properly, even after heaps of setting/softening solution! Plus as the cotton buds start to get dirty I keep them as they can be used later in the process to help give that dirty streaking finish to panels. opps just seen a tiny bit of over spray........a bit more thinners on that area will sort that out. Plus that super fine 30 cal gun barrel........yeap I broke it off an lost it for about 5 minutes, will now stay off right to the very end. Will now start to fit more of the smaller bit once the clear coat is on.
  15. I must say no...I must say no....I must say no..... Ok I could be interested in this one...... bugga didn't say no enough!
  16. well I've just done an update and we have 14 so far. guess it's upto how the voting goes for next years build list. If this doesn't get up I may still do the SM.79 as a WIP.
  17. Good luck! I just built a Sword 1/72 scale version of this for the Seaplane GB, it's actually a nice little plane to build. Reference material is important though, there is a book on this aircraft called "The Reluctant Dragon", has some excellent detail shots of the interior that will be helpful. If you have the time open up the cowling flaps, makes it look that much nicer! Will follow this one with interest, good luck.
  18. Gosh you're going to have this done before I've even sorted out the cowlings on mine!!! That's a far lump of lead you've use, think I'm going to have to add weight to the engine pods on mine as well to have it sit right! Thought it was quite common for the Tigercats to sit on their tails when they were empty, there are some cool photos around showing this. What vintage was the model? Looks great though, we'll done tackling an oldie like this one.
  19. Hi David,I don't know if I can help you or not, I just closed up the AM Avenger I'm building and had some issues as well. Initially with the interior fitted to one side nothing seemed to fit, actually getting it to fit to one side was a pain. The positioning of the floors and bulkheads have to be exact or nothing "seems" to fit. I found it best, by pure luck to fit the interior components to the LHS first ensuring they are correctly in place. On fitting the RHS, you'll need to do a bit of poking and prodding of the interior parts to get them lined up but it does come together quite nicely, though you will require clamps/tape/rubber bands to hold the whole lot together. I would try a few test fits first to locate the "problem" areas plus what's required to poke them in place. Normal glue (not the thin liquid) is the best for this process as it gives you a chance to move things in place and the section behind the pilots seat does need to be taped together as can be seen in the photo. I think the fuselage is a little bit warped in these models but nothing too serious, once glued together the joins we're really good, no filler required and only minor sanding. Actually used no filler on mine at all, a first, plus the wing/fuselage join is excellent! Just take you time and look for those little snag points, its worth it as its an excellent model and i'm enjoying my build even if i got a bit bogged down in the interior. Check out my build as well if you like, hopefully I could help with your question. Sorry to hijack you build thread!
