Beautiful Starfighter and very nice paint.

I agree with you, Kinetic's Starfighter are great kits.

Next one will be another F-104?

Not from this earth!  Excellent reproduction of this iconic plane! Have to get on. Only have a Hasegawa kit, butbthis one is definitely better I guess.

    Cheers

I think the Kinetic is better than the Hasegawa one Andy.  That said the Hasegawa kit is also good.

  2. A respectable 7 completions this year. Same as last year.  The tally this year was 2 jets, 2 World War II Props and 3 pieces of armour.  The last one got across the line on the 24th December

One highlight was completing the Special Hobby Viggen.  This was one subject I have really wanted to add to cabinet for a long time. It was a bit of slog but I'm happy with the result and it should be appearing in a magazine in 2024.

Onto the images.  If you want more on any of the builds the title is a link to the build.

1/48 Kinetic BAe Harrier Gr.3 - No IV (AC) Sqn Royal Air Force

Depicted as aircraft XZ997 / V from No IV (AC) Sqn Royal Air Force RAF Gutersloh, West Germany, 1992.

I have always liked the look of the Harrier Gr.3 with the LRMTS nose. So I was happy when Kinetic finally released that variant.

    1/48 Tamiya T-55

Depicted as generic tank from a Middle Eastern Army.  I wanted to do something other than an all green Warsaw Pact machine.  In the end I went for a generic vehicle using a lot of images found online of other peoples models and actual machines.  I also used Martin Kovac's (Uncle Nightshift) build of the T-55 as inspiration.

This model won it's categories at the 2023 Scale Model Show and ScaleACT 2023.  Needless to say I was pretty happy with the results.

Depicted as P-51D-5, SN 44-13298, flown by Capt. Freddie F. Ohr, 2nd FS, 52nd FG, 15th AF, Madna, Italy, Autumn 1944.

This is my third Eduard P-51D. You can see the first here and second here.  The third was to be another bare metal aircraft as bare metal is not something I feel I'm particularly good at.

I chose this one from from Eduard's Chattanooga Choo Choo Boxing after seeing Spencer Pollards build online.

1/48 Eduard Supermarine Spitfire Vc Trop - No 243 Sqn RAF

Depicted as aircraft JK715 flown by Squadron Leader Evan "Rosie" Mackie,  RNZAF when flown from RAF Hal Far Malta in June to July 1943.

Evan Dall "Rosie" Mackie, DSO, DFC & Bar  was the highest scoring flying ace to serve with the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) with a total of 21.5 victories.  Wikipedia has a good article on his life if you're interested in reading more (click here).

One of the interesting things with Mackie's JK715 was that he fitted a set of exhausts from Spitfire Mk.IX.  Mackie was originally a mechanic so he was always interested in the maintenance of his machines. He first fitted these exhausts to his another Spitfire. After it crash landed, he removed the them and installed them on his new JK715.

1/48 Special Hobby Saab AJ-37 Viggen - F15 Wing Swedish Air Force

Depicted as an aircraft from the F15 wing based at Söderhamn, 1978.

The Viggen was one of those aircraft I loved from the moment I saw it - jumping out of the centrefold of Airplane magazine in that amazing splinter camouflage.

I’m getting one of these for Christmas. What I’m not getting is the ability to produce a model like that. Sublime modelling.

Can I ask what aftermarket you used, how you tackled the camo scheme and any advice on building one?

There is a list of aftermarket I used over at my blog with some more images (  Link is in my signature.).

I used a mask set for the camouflage and tacked it in sections spraying all the colours for that section and then moving on to the next. As for advice on building one.  Well just take it slowing a dry fit everything.

Beautiful work! I really do like the way you go about things, always 'tip top'! How did you find the kit? Always been reticent to get one, paint job gives me the fear :D

The lit is a bit of a struggle to be honest. Lots of clean up and lots of dry fitting.  But far from impossible.  Just take your time and you'll get there. Same with the painting

Tell me please, what color of the washing did you use on the upper surfuse?

You have a fabulous feeling for the harmony of colours!  Self mixed or from the can?

Mostly from the bottle except for the light green which I mixed.  My blog has a list of the colours used.  Link is in my signature.

I wonder if the B/C moulds even exist .....maybe something has happened to them?

The C was re-released last year (or the one before) They were quite easy to get for a period. it seems the A-4E/F and TA-4$ along with the M are the current ones they are producing atm.

No, because the nose art image is it.

No serial, no letter, not even the Hurricane mark is really discernable.

So unless a pic turns, or the pilots logbook exists and has info...

The link suggest a IIC, but I can't see any cannon barrel so more likely  IIB though.

    HTH

More info here.  He was KIA in 31 Mar 43 flying a IIB according to this site.

And more info on him is here

The fairing between the wing and the cowling tells me that it is a Mk.II.

    Yeah definitely MK II,

Can't really help with this except to say I get a scary Microsoft warning about not linking to this site.

    Interesting looking nose art though.

Absolutely fantastic job, the weathering is just superb....well done! One of the best Maltese Spits I've seen, amongst many impressive examples displayed on this forum.

Side note: Evan Mackie's book 'Spitfire Leader' is highly recommended. He survived the war and led a constructive but low-profile life back in New Zealand.

Yes I have the book and I grew up in the same town as him. He was instrumental in the local power board although I didn't know that when I was a kid.

Unfortunate, but seems repairable with some effort.

Why was the location wrong? ( do not want to make the same mistake....)

I just didn't look long enough before I started cutting.

Another annoyance with the lit is that it includes a sprue with a lot of corrected parts, including the RAT bay , canards and centerline pylon.  But it's not mentioned in the instructions so I paid no attention to it ... until I'd bought aftermarket replacements :)

  8. The Viggen automatically deploys it RAM Air Turbine (RAT) on landing so the RAT is virtually always deployed on the ground (I am thinking I should have done this in flight).

There are 2 RAT’s on the market, one by Pilot replicas and the other Maestro Models.  The Maestro Models one was the one available so I ordered it.  It’s not the best piece of Resin in the world but it’s better than my scratch building skills.

Fitment was a pain.  The RAT Bay, Fuselage skin and intakes were thinned Aires levels of thickness.

Once it was eventually installed with CA glue, I added some Magic Sculpt to provide some extra security.

    Viggen-11.jpg

    Viggen-12.jpg

Time to glue the fuselage sub-assemblies. Some clamping was required

    Viggen-13.jpg

It was at this stage I realised I had totally cocked up the positioning of the RAT bay.  It was way to high on the fuselage and was so far so far out that it had to be corrected.  Sadly, it didn’t come out in one piece.
