  1. Aeroplane magazine did some fairly decent coverage of the FAA with their Battle of Britain September edition. The article was entitled the 'Fleet Air Arms Few'. There's an interesting photo of Sub-Lt Gardners 242 Sqn Hurricane with Nelsons semaphore flags- 'England expects that every man must do his duty' painted below the cockpit! I see Xtradecal make the decals for that. Trouble is Joe Public doesn't buy Aeroplane magazine and everyone knows it was just RAF spitfires that won the BoB!

  5. Some more progress today. I have buttoned up the fuselage and eradicated any seam lines. I have created the underside vent for the carbon monoxide scoops out of some thin acetate. Maybe a little wide but I think it looks okay. I drilled out some holes for the MDC scoops to fit into and also some holes for the radio aerials which will be added after the aircraft is painted. On the starboard wing I used the clear cropped wingtip of Airfix's new Mk1 Spit to create a light. prior to the mask, the canopy parts were dipped in slightly watered Future and came out nice and shiney! For now all the ancillary parts are just sitting in place for effect. I hope to start the colour scheme next week.
  6. JT199 is a MKII though. I used to take photos with slide film and the colour saturation used to be very high giving really quite colourful photos and I think the photos above show similar properties. Therefore, they are more saturated than what the eye would see. I also think that the paint looks abit 'chalky' and lighter than the TSS paints woud be. The underside colour of these aircraft is what led me to paint my MkI in a light gray underside rather than sky. I can see there is a similarity to sky but if you took out some of the saturation it would be more gray. I believe in the Dana Bell book it says that British aircraft were painted in enamels which meant that the paint shade holds true no matter what the surface it is. When compared to the US corsairs (which were painted in lacquer) there is a difference in shade between metal and fabric surfaces. Similar to what is seen on some hurricanes in photos on the site. Now take a look at the wings of JT235 and where the fabric part meets the metal pane line. There is definitely a difference in shade on what is a brand new paint job. Could this mean the paints suggested by Dana are not enamels but something different? I don't know... Another item I've noticed in these photos is the sealant around the forward fuel tank. Apparently applied to prevent fuel vapours arising and causing the aircraft to combust. Looks like some sort of intermediate blue and what actually is it? A doped strip??
  7. The major differences are that the MkIV has plumbing for 2 fuel tanks to be fitted underneath either side of where the MkII has its external fuel tank. These look like 2 pylons and can also be fitted with bombs. The propeller is slightly shorter and should be the equivalent of 13'1". The canopy that comes with the F4u-1a can be suitable for some MkIV's but you need to check the references otherwise they have the slightly different bubble canopy without overhead framing. Most will also have a slightly longer tailwheel. I don't know if the kit contains those parts?
  8. Hi folks, little update today. I've undercoated the fuselage and cockpit area with an approximation of zinc chromate followed by interior green. Cockpit items have been picked out, drybrushed and then a dark brown enamel wash run into the crevasses. The engine has been painted black, drybrushed and the front portion painted dark gull grey. Again, a wash run over to accentuate some of the detail.   9. Perhaps it's because I airbrushed Xtracrylics ANA olive drab over a light grey undercoat but I'm pretty happy with the look of it compared to some of those photos. Perhaps a touch of white may bring it closer. On your colour chart, bottom, second from the end looks fairly similar. Model Colour is it? Btw on the photo of the MkII's with the chap walking in front, notice the fuel vent near the roundel protruding out and painted red.
  10. Are you fan of Xtracrylix? They do a nice ANA olive drab, can't say I've brush painted much with Xtracrylix though.
  11. Although in the book it says they operated the MkIs till Ceylon, they brought MkII's over the Atlantic with them and embarked with MkII's when they joined HMS Ilustrious in Dec 1943. There are a range of photos on the IWM site showing 1833 Sqn MkIIs out of Macrihanish with one of the COs aircraft and also flown by Hanson- JT228. 1835 was a bit different as they were formed at Quonset point in the States with MkIs but ended becoming a training squadron by disbanding (MkI and MkIIs) and becoming 732 Sqn. Later on in 1944 the Sqn reformed with MkIVs. As a training squadron the aircraft may have been fitted with longer tailwheels later on in 1944? Certainly the MkIVs would've been. Certainly making speedy progress Tony, looks such a lovely kit!

  14. Thanks for the response, the wheels shouldn't be too tricky but a lot of drilling is required! I'm just suprised that no-one has got round to making said gun barrel. Does anything related to the meteor engine differ externally?
  15. Hello Tony, I have just noticed your thread. That kit looks an absolute beauty and although not my scale I would certainly consider getting one. I like your dark dull green. I used something similar on my MkI cockpit, I did go for salmon pink for my tailwheel area but I have also seen yellow zinc chromate on one of the corsair colour photos over here: http://historylink101.com/ww2_navy/org/planes/BritishPlanes/index.html. But note that is JT190, one of the last of the MkI's. Shame about the decal, perhaps not too hard too correct? I used a combination of red and white decals to make '7J' which was fiddly but maybe a tad easier in 1/32. Great work!
  16. I have cut out the rudder and joined it together. The MDC resin comes with sidewalls which need the existing kit sidewall to be shaved off.
  17. Hifolks, I have another Tamiya corsair to make so I thought I would use it to do my first wip. The aircraft will be finished as JT371 of 1833 Sqn based on HMS Illustrious. The aircraft was flown by Lt N.Hanson on several occasions, notably during the attack on Sabang and Port Blair. The kit is well known but I will use the MDC conversion kit which comes with several resin parts for the cockpit, air scoops, prop and fuel tank. I aim to display it with wings folded and flaps up. I have added a few ignition wires to the engine. The flaps have had their attachment points cut off and require new ones to go through the existing holes but are shown here glued in. Here the flaps are up on the outer wings and the necessary cut has been made on both wingtips. I'll use some clear sprue to create the wingtip lights.

  22. JK101 which you have there on the second list, I modelled as having a red spinner and medium sea gray codes, went for an azure undersurface too, completely different to that profile! Great selection though, 1/48 would be great. I've wanted to model JK465 for a while, interesting colour and roundels.
  23. Are you thinking of the photo in Ospreys FAA aces with Leslie in front? It looks like there are outlines at least around the D, until you zoom in and it might not have outlines.I know I've posted this over on the other thread but this video shows some great footage of various roundels and codes on 1834&1836 Sqn aircraft. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KM1PvJwQmcE Notice '7Q' which doesn't have an outline. I have a photo of JT565 which doesn't have outlines, coded '7S'.
