  1. Hello, Neil - I hope I'm not too late but did I spot a seat in the Engineer's compartment? I dont think there was one! If you haven't buttoned the fuselage up, AND *IF* I'm right, dare I suggest you remove the seat? NOT a criticism, promise! Jonny
  2. Yes, of course it did. RAF Felixstowe was an RAF Station based at Felixstowe, Suffolk - on the coast! I didn't see the need to spell that out in words because I also referred to SUNDERLAND, SEA OTTERs and SEAGULLs!!! One flying boat and two amphibians. So sorry if that wasn't clear. One tends to think that places one lived in andknew as a small child afre known to most. Hope this removes any confusion. Jonny
  3. Oh wow! As a (very) young boy my father, who worked at RAF Felixstowe, took me to see (and hear!) this aeroplane. The 'hear' bit amazed me, used as I was to Sunderlands, Sea Otter, Seagull and the like. I remember standing watching - at a suitable distance - this strange whistling 'something' on the apron. I dimly remember seeing it take off and fly during an airshow! I remember that because three Lincolns beat up the station and the noise terrfied me! Many years later, during my first happy visit to Duxford I saw the aeroplane there, and then, some years later, seeing it again at Solent Oh nostalgia!! Apologies for hijacking Sabrejet's thread! I wish someone would produce a kit in 1/48 scale!! Some hope Jonny
  4. I'm not at all sure that the RAF ordered / acquired 300 B.29s. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the actual number was less than 100 i.e. 80-something. I might be wrong. Just my £0.02 worth! Jonny
  5. I'm watching this with great interest, 'cos my first-ever flight was in a Hunter T.7, thanks to my being in my school's CCF RAF Section. Oh happy days. I remember having to be trained to operate a Martin Baker bang seat and while being strapped in the pilot saying "if I say 'Eject Eject' don't ask anything because I won't be there". What puts me off this conversion at the moment is the combined cost of the Airfix kit and the Aerocraft conversion. I wonder if Airfix might release a kit of the T.7 (or T.8M) sometime. ARE YOU READING THIS, AIRFIX???? Jonny
  6. Hi, CC - Did you ever do a WIP for the very nice Korean War Mk. 1 you showed us? I'm only asking 'cos your photo rang a bell and I found the Mk. 1 'Home Fleet' boxing in my stash If ever I get round to building it I'm going to do the Operation Mascot aeroplane (5M/Z1830, of 1770 FAA Squadron embarked on HMS Indefatigable. I've searched the forum hoping to find your Mk. 1 but no luck! I'll watch you new build(s) for clues! Best, Jonny
  7. Apologies if this has been highlighted before. Anyway, I was browsing magazines in my local Newsagent today when I spotted this title. There's no publication month or year at all on the front cover. Howver, there's a lot about new decal releases, as well as kit releases. After that there are 'build' artcicles such as a 1/35 Draon Brummbar, the Airfix 1/72 Lancaster B.III, and the Eduard 1/48 P51 Mustang among others. Editor is one Jay Laverty who introduces himself on the last page. No indication whether this is a monthly or longer period publication though there is an advert for subscriptions, for 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months, so one assumes monthly but who knows? I thought some might be interested .... . Jonny
  8. Oh, that's a shame. I didn't buy the magazine regularly but just the odd copy. Rather like @Paul821 I tended to look at copies in a High Street outlet and buy if I found something that intrested me. Still, Pen and Sword are offering back copies of the magazine, and bound volumes, though for how long isn't stated in the website ( https://www.afterthebattle.com/ ). Jonny
  9. I'm sorry if this is deemed 'Topic drift' but is Freightdog still in operation? I see that the link dogsbody kindly provided shows 'out of stock' which is also shown for many items. I have tried using the 'Contact' facility but withoiut success so fear the worst! Any response(s) gratefully received! Jonny
  10. Finn, If you use the link I provided you'll see this: It had more room than in other types and it was possible to wear a back type parachute and so bale out of the turret. It was, however, very cold due to the cut-away Perspex, which left the turret completely open. I think that answers your question! I hope so, anyway! Jonny
  11. I think you (Selwyn) have cracked it! I did a search and came up with this account http://www.bphs.net/GroupFacilities/R/RoseB I really was tooking for a two 0.5 guns FN turret - FN82 - but it's been really interesting. I didn't know how versatile the Rose company was! Live & learn, eh? Jonny
  12. Colin ... I've read that with the original turret there wasn't room for the gunner's parachute, so it was stored in the fuselage. All the poor devil had to do was centralise the turret, open the doors, retrieve his chute, clip it on, then revolve the turret to port or starboard and fall out backwards. I don't know if there was room in the Rose-Rice turret to stow the 'chute in it. The turret certainly looks roomier than the FN turrets. I'd be interested to know if indeed the gunner could bail out through the front as you suggest. Anyone know for sure?
  13. Thanks, WhitleyZ6743 and dogsbody (Chris)! I feel a bit of an idiot! Somehow I had a fixation that the two 0.5 gun turret was the Rose-Rice one and I forgot the FN.82. I should have asked for an FN.82 ... I dug deep in my stash, found my Airfix Lancaster B.II and sure enough it includes the FN.82! I think I might have the B.I/B.III kit too, somewhere. Aplogies for wasting everyone's time and thanks to WhitleyZ6743 and to dogsbody (Chris) for being so gentle! Mods ... would you please delete this thread? I'll cringe every time I see it!!!! Thanks. Jonny
  14. I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have a spare Rose-Rice Lancaster turret - the late WW2 twin 0.5 guns one? I think this was included in the Airfix Lancater B.1 FE. Ideally, I'd like as many of the components as possble but happy to consider the glazed part. I'll pay any postal costs. Please let me know via a direct message if you can help. Thanks (with crossed fingers!), Jonny
  15. Super photos! Thanks for sharing them! I must say that, apart from the subject, I'm impressed by the solar panels visible on the roofs in the background! At least, I *think* that's what they are! Jonny
  16. Thanks, Wellsprop ... I'm afraid I don't have a facebook account and cannot, therefore, read the material you have provided a link to! However, I'm guessing it states that the Sea Vixen will not be repaired to airworthy standard, but will be restored to viewable static standard. With regard to the Seahawk ISTR it being announced some time ago that it will be restored to airworthy status - does your facebook article say when? Thganks & regards, Jonny
  17. My subscription copy of 'Aeroplane' arrived yesterday. On the front inside there is the announcement that the Fighter Meet is back and will be held on August 27 and 28. General admission is .... wait for it ... £25. You can go up-market and pay £125 for the 'enclosure' or buy 2 day's tickets. URL is www.fightermeet.co.uk I've just booked myself in for the Saturday. Fingers crossed for the weather! Thought some might be interested, Jonny
  18. The Fighter Collection's website entry for the Beaufighter states "The structure of the aircraft is now largely complete and awaits fittings and suitable engines before progressing further". As I said earlier, I'm sure I saw two Hercules engines on stands next to the airframe (it was back in the day when one could get closer to the aeroplane than currently possible) so it may be they are away for rebuild. Then again, as Ngantek says, it may be they were the wrong (or differing) marks and the cost of modifications & certification is expensive. A great shame indeed.
  19. I too was at Duxford last Sunday. Actually, and I hope I'm not being over pedantic, but there were TWO aircraft movements during the day! Just after I arrived the 'NHS Spitfire' was towed away from ARC's hangar to a ground side display area where it sat immobile till quite late in the day when it was towed back. Not sure whether that counts as a 'movement'! I also watched the Staggerwing rumble down to the hold point, pause, then rumble back to where it started and switch off. It was a very misty day, wasn't it, AD210? One bit of high amusement for me ... I was in the Air & Sea hangar having a restful sit when a little boy clutching a toy plane came in with (I think) his grandparents. About then the sound of a jet engine could be heard. A number of people made a move to leave the hangar doubtless hoping to see something interesting move when the jet noise stopped. That happened a couple more times, and I realised it was the little boy's toy. Great photos as always, AD210. Thank you for sharing them. Oh - a long time ago I heard that The Fighter Collection was actively seeking two Herculese engines for the Beaufighter. I'm sure I saw two on stands near the aeroplane and wonder if it's since been decided they were different models of the engines, or for some reason unsuitable. Time will tell! Cheers, Jonny
  20. I think this is the 1/48 scale kit! Please see first photo!!!!! It *IS* impressive, though! Sorry, can't resist - no offence intended! Jonny
  21. Thanks, AD210 ... I had a closer look at a photo I took and spotted the LN-DHY registration in small characters on the port boom. I missed it before.. I was rather hoping that a 'new' Vampire had been restored to fly. No such luck. It's goods to know that 'The Good Shepherd' is being filmed (thinks - OK we've a Vampire in the cast but where's the Mosquito?).
  22. I suppose I should really have said 'Weapons Bay doors'? I'm still laughing, Nigel!
  23. I thought I'd have a day wandering round IWM Duxford today. I ambled into the Restoration / Conservation Hangar (No. 5) expecting to see the Victor there but - hardly anything to be seen - the fin and outer wings were there but no fuselage. I asked one volunteer who said he'd no idea and another who said he wasn't sure but it might have been carted across the road to the Astra cinema. I thought that unlikely but thinking about it 'AirSpace' came to mind. So I marched there to be greeted by a strong smell of fresh paint. And there she was, standing on her wheels looking very smart in Grey/Green over White camouflage! Devoid of outer wings, tail assembly and bombay doors but looking just right. I've lost track of just how long she's been under restoration. I remember being on a Hangar tour ages ago when we were shown some metal taken from the airframe which looked like lace and was to be replaced. So - this unique aeroplane is nearly complete. One can only hope she'll be kept under cover and not out in the elements as she was before this mammoth restoration started. It looks as though Hangar 5's roof is being given 'the treatment - scaffolding everywhere and entrance only by a side door. I notice that the space previously used for the Victor has been taken up by the Shackleton's fuselage but I got the impression work will wait till the roof work is completed.# All in all a good day out! Jonny PS on the apron used to park visiting aeroplanes I spotted a single seat Vampire. A cover was over the canopy and the tail was towards me and I couldn't work out what Mark it is, but the serial is WA123 and the squadron / aircraft ID R (RAF roundel) A. Does anyone know anything about this? I have found a photo on the Interweb which seems to indicate the aeroplane might be the Norwegian one in new colours!
  24. A nice photo, nonetheless, Mr T! Thanks for sharing. Jonny
