  1. Nice build and not so many early B17 models around, it is quite surprising how long the Fortress I lasted in British service in various guises
  2. A nice piece of work. Those Matchbox kits do have a period charm especially the plastic colours used. Liked the comments on the 70's bar colour scheme, truly the decade taste forgot.
  3. And suddenly it's 1985 again. Some of the early Magna kits like the DH 95 Flamingo were full of pinholes and the first run of the CMK Vampire Ihad terrible pinholes on the wings that did not show up until it was primed. If anyone can beat this kit into shape, I am sure you can.
  4. Might not be up to Airfix and was this an added sticker as I cannot remember seeing anything on a UK boxed example? Different countries have hugely different standards as to what is acceptable. I understand that a Iran would not show a football match as the referee was female and presumably in shorts. In a lot of US states you cannot buy or be served alcohol until you are 21.
  5. I brush paint Xtracyrlix for patterns and found that thinning with flow improver does wonders. Each colour seems to need a different ratio of paint to improver and it really does help to prevent brush strokes.
  6. Rayprit is right, RMWeb is a good place for railway modelling and there are a couple of others, including a beginners site whose name escapes me. If you are using the transformer in the set, you will probably need another one for the other track, certainly you would need another controller. Peco do/did some good little pamphlets on various aspects of railway modelling, including electrics. It is worth seeing if there a model railway shop near you, they are often run by enthusiasts.
  7. A very nice model. Built one last year of the same aircraft but with 'Royal Navy' titles and put the WIP and RFI on here. The small size is a bit of challenge, but worth the effort I think. It was demonstrated landing on the back of a Ford ET6 flatbed at a Farnborough airshow and two survive. One at the Midland Aircraft Museum, Coventry and the other at the British Rotorcraft Museum at West on Super Mare.
  8. I have used acrylics for a while now and I think you have to learn airbrush and paintbrush techniques again as the paints are quite different. I prime with Halfords automotive or plastic primer and provided a model isn't handled too much before the top coat goes on, I have had few problems. The use of flow improver help with both brush and airbrush painting and talking to my brother who is an artist and teaches painting and sketching since he retired, he would never think of using acrylics without them. He also points out he rarely uses any paint without thinning apart from some oils and has to change his technique according to the medium. Go with works for you. I have also found domestic acceptability of my hobby has risen since using a low odour alternative (primer spraying being done outside or in the conservatory, providing both spray and model are at room temp, the minute or do to spray a 1/72nd scale model seems to be OK down to about 5 degrees C).
  9. A pair of Apaches quite low over Rothwell (the West Yorkshire one) heading southwest. Not common around here compared to the Chinooks.
  10. Thanks very much for that. Although I have been watching Star Wars from seeing the original in 1977 at the tender age of 23, always been a 1/72nd aircraft modeller. My son realises this and so cleverly buys a kit in the right scale.
  11. After my experiences with BL cars, they all looked shabby after a short while. Cannot be many left as they have probably rusted through.
  12. Was that at the Halifax Show today, was going to ask, but did not get chance?
  13. My son has bought me this kit for my birthday. It looks very good in the box, but the instructions are entirely in Japanese, including the colours. Thi kit is a bit out of the ordinary for me and any help would be much appreciated.
  14. Nice builds and I really like the 21. I built the AZ 18 last year in the same scheme, a bit of a challenge.
  15. I received this book for Christmas, but have only recently read it. It is well produced and photos are well produced. I do have a problem with the text. In places there is repetition, especially around the aircrafts development. The photo of the Fury cockpit is also in error in that it is of a replica and the instrument panel is not representative of the original. Still worth having.
  16. 65 today, but still feel 18 in my head. Living in West Yorkshire not entitled to my old gits bus pass until my state pension age, which is July this year.
  17. Forgot about this but on way back from Scotland on Sunday, on the edge of a wood near Newcastle a GAZ lorry of some sort with looked like a MLRS on the back (although could be wrong here).
  18. As I recall, the car was 'Y' reg and so could have been in that batch, given that it was in North Yorkshire in the mid 80's.
  19. My wife and her sister shared an Austin Metro when I first met her and sisters boyfriend welded a new patch as the floor pan had rusted through on the passenger side, mind you Metros came with rust as standard, our last one was a nightmare, the Micra that replaced went 15 years with few problems except near the end.
  20. In the yard outside Ace Classic cars at Rothwell, a very neat looking pale blue Sunbeam Alpine, couldn't see the reg plate as was driving, with the nose of an early sixties Austin Cambridge sticking out the workshop door.
  21. Only just noticed this. A very nice model and the AMW article is a most useful guide to building it. When (ha!) I get around to building mine I probably shall not drop the flaps etc as too many models and to little time.
  22. A good reply, the only thing I would add is that if you can find a photo of the plane you want to build, have a good look at it as some aircraft may have been refinished.
  23. Very nice Phantom, the stencils make it as they look naked without them.
  24. Thanks Steve, we are both well if a little frazzled trying to work out the best for me mum, thus the location. The road we were on did not allow the Maserati to display its performance, most likely to have ended up in a hedge or wall if the driver had tried, seems in Scotland tight bends may or may not be marked. Hopefully will see you at Halifax.
  25. Coming back from mum's and on A1 just south of Newcastle this afternoon a red N suffix Lotus Elan. Going up a hill, but struggling a bit. Followed a Maserati saloon? from Newton St Bowell to Kelso on Friday afternoon.
