  1. Exactly what Troy said, there are a number of techniques, and I suspect we have our own favourite. Also depends on what the wash is to achieve. I like to use pin wash as it puts it exactly where I want it under precise control (usually in panel lines, joints and corners), but sometimes use a build up over a wider area for shadowy or grubby corners. Tend to make them from a thinned colour, and apply lightly to reduce the effect.
  2. I would imagine enamels would be reliable and good to airbrush with, I prefer the clean and easy use of acrylics for general use including brush painting, but they can sometimes be a bit problematic with airbrushing. Anyway, just used the Life Color again but went back to thinning with good old tap water - perfect results 🙂. I guess it comes down to the old saying of 'if it aint broke, don't try to fix it'.
  3. Cracking build, so much detail and all nicely finished, looks great.
  4. Just to add my new experience, not all acrylic thinners are universal - just used Revell acrylic thinner with LifeColor acrylic paint - after a lot of mixing, thinning and frustration, I noticed the paint started to curdle in the airbrush cup, then turned to porridge, had to strip and clean the (new) airbrush quickly before it turned to concrete. I think the lesson if mixing manufacturers acrylic products is check and test before proceeding.
  5. Seems a little surprising as Revell Aqua is my favourite choice for easy airbrushing, thinned with just water. However I also have repeated problems with all paint types being intermittent, which usually involves cleaning the airbrush and mixing the paint thinner until it finally becomes consistent.
  6. That is a top rate build, with a great level of detail and excellent finishing.
  7. Does anyone know if these are in stock anywhere in the UK? (Have looked around and can't see any for sale, including Hannants).
  8. Not sure if it will answer all the questions, but there is a nice build log of the old Revell kit into USS Hornet for the Apollo 11 missions, see link below: http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/cv/cv-12/Hornet-Apollo-fs/index.htm
  9. That is amazing, a complex build and really nicely finished, looks very good. It really captures the Japanese carrier look, and is inspiring to any model ship builder.
  10. Beautifully built and finished, well done.
  11. Superb build, nice subtle weathered finishing - looks mighty impressive!
  12. Just had a full catch up on this from beginning to end - that was certainly quite a project but the result shows it was worth it, with an excellent looking interesting subject.
  13. Well done - must have been quite a challenge, but makes an interesting subject, and looks good with top rate finishing.
  14. Ah, thanks for that Jestblast, that explains my puzzlement over all the 1/4" BSP fittings available.
  15. I've just bought a Badger BA1100 (second hand). To connect an airbrush, I see it has a large connection, which measures 1/2" external thread diameter. To purchase a suitable adapter, they seem to be advertised at generally 1/4" or 1/8", just wondering where I would obtain a large 1/2" connection from, and is this a normal size? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks, Rob.
  16. I agree with many comments above; very nice subtle finishing on the ship and the sea, and just a very high standard all round, particularly considering this is in 1:700.
  17. That looks great Beefy, and good to see a British subject - that's a very dynamic setting and nicely finished all round.
  18. Agree with all above; this is very finely finished with great detail and subtle finishing.
  19. Great job on this classic cruiser kit, looks very good.
  20. Super diorama, great work.
  21. I've used soil as a base for dioramas/display bases for some time now - it really is the perfect material. Not only plentiful and free, it's a perfect material for easily formed into rough, fine, or right down to powder like natural scaled down texture, and forms a good solid finish after sprinkling on a layer of thinned sprayed PVA, then perfect for airbrushing an improved shade. Static grass goes over this finish with no issues. I've generally sorted/sieved it to remove stones and plant material, but that's all, and it doesn't seem to deteriorate over time.
  22. That is top rate modelling; nicely done.
  23. Nice to see another build of this classic Airfix kit, and she looks particularly good in that camoflage scheme!
