Airfix 1/72 RNLI Severn Class Lifeboat.
Bennygman replied to Richard M's topic in Work in Progress - Maritime
Damn - that's shiny ! Really great work Rich. There's several ship/boat kits that are tempting me at the moment, of which this is one. Builds like this don't make it any easier to resist. Steve. -

Your mark seems a bit harsh Paul. If I really look hard there's maybe a bit around the top of the doors where the decal hasn't quite settled, but you have to really be looking for it. Anything in particular you were unhappy with? Steve. -
I thought that was a blind flying hood! I seem to emember the review saying that the kit decals were oversized slightly. That said it's a cracking build - oils or 'Flory's best' for the wash? Steve.

Superb Rich - those transparencies look particularly neatly done. Steve. -
I looked at those sets for my Honda, but chickened out in the end and decided on just the pe set from 'Crazy modeller'. That's decided it then - no way am I going to do one of these for the build and have it compared to yours! Audi R10 here I come. Steve.

Boy, does that look good! I'm really glad I bought Aries engines for my unstarted Hase one now! I did have a 'no more kits 'til the new year' plan in place - looks like that's just gone for a Burton . Hope they've fixed the mid-upper turret on the production ones, it was the only thing that looked weird in the photos I've seen. Steve.

Looking good Bob - great work on those gun barrels! Funnily enough that's the exact kit that nearly tempted me over to the 'dark side' too. Steve.

Just superb Rich - one of the best build threads I've seen in a while. I've got loads of ideas from your pics on how to do things which will come in handy as I'm quite partial to the odd Airfix build. I know what you mean about the transparencies on some of these kits, but I'd never have had the guts to putty over the transparencies and would probably have masked the windows and then tried to fill the gaps. And as for cutting the closed fuselage in half!...amazing commitment. I Look forward to further installments, Steve. -
This one hopefully... The Revell one that is, not the hugely expensive resin/metal job. Steve.
-
Nice - I'd like to photograph one of them at some point. I remember seeing one of the original Guppy prop-jobs at Paris airshow a good few years back. Steve.

Whats all this fuss about Syhart decals??

I've been keeping an eye on this lot for some time now - if only because their 'future projects' section has the Hellenic Tiger A-7 that's been doing the rounds of European airshows - got a 1/48th size space marked out for that one! The Dutch Demo F-16 appeals too. The web-site is well worth a visit, though I do find some of the schemes a bit OTT, personal taste and all that. Steve. -
Great to see the Xtrakit Canberra nearing release - it seems like I've had that and the Sea Vixen on order for years. Good news. Steve.

Which will give it the edge over the Eduard etched ones I have for my Audi R10. They look great on the fret, but getting them to 'drape' could be challenging to say the least. Especially as they're pre-painted so heating is out. Steve.

Looking good Jon - I've been strangely attracted to this kit since I saw the real one at Duxford (as seen in Mike's pics). I think the Vichy one with the red/yellow stripes would look superb in 1/48. Shame I've got a self imposed ban on kit buying 'til the new year. I'll look forward to more progress. Steve.

Let us know how it goes Neil - I was thinking about doing the same with my Honda. Steve.
-
Ah, thanks for the info' Oz - all clear now. I'll give them a go tomorrow. Cheers, Steve.

Hey guys, how did you order them? When I go to the Aviation workshop page I get some flash-Harry new website that doesn't have ordering links set up. Nice bouncy graphics mind, but for the second time this week, no way to give a trader my money. Now I'm no commerce expert, but .... Steve.

Wow - thanks guys I think between you that's got it covered Daz: your close up of the LGB is superb - answers all my questions about the colours. Mike: Love that lower rear shot, I think that'll be of use to others as well. Dean: What a cracker - I never thought of Jet photos, I got a shot from Airliners of it landing at Fairford, but as Gary said, it was unarmed at the time. Tez; what you say makes sense, I'm guessing there's not much call for pure fighter cover over there (could be wrong though). Only problem now is that with so much info I think I'm gonna have to switch to 1/48 to do it justice. Steve.

Just found the thread and read through the lot - superb work mate. Putting wash over matt coat goes against all other advice, but there's no arguing with the results, that dirty camo looks absolutely superb. You can always spot the real experts - they're the ones who can break the rules and get away with it. Steve. -
Yeah, me too. I tend to read them from cover to cover over the course of the month, mainly to be inspired by some of the amazing builds (Juanjo's Draken being such a build this month). I then tear out the pages that are likely to be useful because of a technique used or maybe an 'aircraft in detail' or 'profile' article if I think it's a subject I'd like to buld. these get filed in a lever arch file in those clear plastic inserts. There's a scanner on the way shortly so I'm planning to archive these electronically, but who knows how far that project will get. I'm not one for hours of detailed research, but even I've learned not to trust profiles and plans completely. I think of them as a starting point for an interesting scheme and quite often I'm willing to accept any inaccuracies that may be present if it makes for an attractive model. Nothing should ever be accepted without question, its just a case of knowing how far you want to go before reaching a point where you're statisfied, and that will probably be different for everyone. Steve.

Thanks for those two shots guys & gal - both saved in my Tiffy reference directory. Any others would be greatly appreciated also, especially if they also show which machine it was. Gary: yes, I like the idea of the fighter guys carrying the LGBs. I look forward to someone making that comment about the finished model just so's I can say, "well, actually ...." . Steve.
-
A quick request to anyone who went to RIAT this year. Did anyone get any shots of the Typhoon in static that was carrying six (I think) LGBs? I'm thinking of building my Revell kit using the same load-out but I didn't take any general shots of it , just this one... If anyone would be kind enough to post up any others I'd be most grateful. Steve.

Nice work there Dean, looks like a good day to have gone. I really like the third one, the lighting on it is wonderful and its a very sharp image. That last one of the sentinel is a bit nice too. slightly jealous of the harrier - the only one I saw when I went was a visiting one doing an overshoot and I completely muffed the shot. Must get up there gain soonish, and I quite fancy another trip to the Heath now the heat-haze will have died down a bit. Steve.
-
Well done guys - sounds like a great day. Would have loved to have joined you, but month end and all that. I'll settle for some of Dean's pics. Next time. Steve.
