  1. Sorry for the lack of updates recently chaps.

The Belfast is all done but for an overall flat coat which will be applied at the weekend. Oh, and I need to paint the stand too (it'll just be the basic Airfix one, but it should look ok I think).

I May now be able to attend in person on the Saturday, but work can't make their minds up at the moment. Assume it still needs transport for now. In the event things get a bit thin on the ground I have a couple of Xtrakit Meteor F8's in 64 & 65 sqn markings which I'd be happy to lend to the display. Not official GB entries, but were built during the same timescale if that helps.

    Steve.

  2. Yep it would be a boring old world if we all liked the same things...

    Den

Yes, I don't need half a mag' on the Sudanese airforce personally, but I bet there are some small air force enthusiasts who lapped it up. Next months is some kind of civvy thing which is equally uninteresting to me, but again there'll be an audience for it I'm sure.

As was said, horses for courses.

  3. The wing outer panels are too thick and require reduction.

The engine nacelle upper/lower components don't match up very well.

The nacelle front rings and jet pipes don't fit well.

As mentioned above the wing fit requires some fettling, also a small amount of filling underneath.

Not got there yet but the undercarriage components look fiddly, with an excess of components and butt fitting parts, including to the wheel bays.

    peebeep

Glad it wasn't just me then :)

The undercarriage looks like it will be worse than it is IMO. The 'knee joints' are quite a strong fit I found, though it was best to let them set hard before adding the other parts. I also pinned the main legs into the wing (through it actually, but that's another story).

I think it's one that rewards the work that needs to be done on it.

  4. I'm tempted by this one as a birthday present to myself, seeing as the weather has been so crap this year for most shows. Having said that, do we go with the BBC's bright and sunny or Metcheck's Piddling down ? Fortunately I'm close enough to rely on the old 'open curtains Sunday morning and have a look' trick.

Of course there will be a Vulcan on display, just not the Vulcan  .

  5. Steve, we can arrange to get your model to the show if you get it completed.

    peebeep

OK, I don't see a problem with getting it done (unless I really **** up at the last), maybe I can drop it off with someone? Lets get it finished first, and take it from there.

    Steve.

  6. I've had the rug pulled from under me guys.

My U.S. owned company has decided to send an internal audit team to tear us apart between the 11th and 17th Nov'. I've been told that a stock take is occuring, and as it needs to happen during 'down time' it will be at the weekend.

The Belfast is looking good (to my eyes) and has about 5 hours work left, but it won't be getting to the show now.

Console yourself with this; auditors are bad enough, but apparently the internal form is the worst kind of zealot, and akin to the inquisition. Suffice to say I won't be enjoying myself that weekend.

    Steve.

  7. Thanks again :) It's meant to be High Speed Silver not natural metal though, is it too shiny?! :)

    Andy

No, I think its perfect personally.

I'm just finishing my second one of the Xtrakit version (excellent decals in that one). The first was in HSS and I left it pretty much clean as it was part of a display team. Yours looks excellent however, really nice job.

My second is in camo' and will have an oil wash, should have some pics up soon.

    Steve.

  8. I seem to recall somebody was doing a Belfast...? :hmmm::whistle:

    peebeep

    Don't panic Mr Mainwaring!

She's still jogging along. I've got about half the railings fitted and all that really remains are the two masts and assorted fittings. I'll post an update at the weekend to prove I haven't forgotten it ;)

Out of interest, I don't have to be an IPMS member to display a model, do I? I intend to become one, but I'm not sure if I've missed the cut-off for processing memberships before the show.

    Steve.

PS Brews; sorry to disapoint; it's the Airfix 1:600.

  9. Hi again chaps. Firstly apologies for not having updated the thread in two months <_<

However, I've not been idle and the ship is beginning to look quite warlike now. Here's a few pics of what I have a nd some of the sub-assemblies waiting to be fitted. There's not actually too much more to do, but as it's all fiddle etched stuff like aerials, I'm only working on it when I feel like it so it'll still be a while. Still two months to go though, so I don't anticipate any problem with the deadline.

    onto the pics...

The colours are the recommended Humbrols from the Airfix instructions, so may not be spot on for accuracy, but I think the overall result is quite pleasing. Can't help thinking that I need to come up with something better presentation wise than the Airfix stand though.

  10. Mine arrived from HLJ a couple of days back. Absolutely lovely looking kit and I look forward to seeing it square up across the cabinet from the Eduard Hellcat. The five pilot figures are a nice little bonus too. I combined my purchase with an egg-plane F-16 and was delighted to see it came with Dutch decals. Very weird concept, but great fun.

The Zeke was about £15.50 + £4 p&p by slow boat from Japan, but still only a couple of weeks. Beats 27 quid plus postage from Lowestoft!

    Steve.

  11. Ok, two for me.

After proudly displaying this I discovered the 'car door' was only on one side - guess which one?

Had an Alclad nightmare with this one, but was so glad to have recovered it I missed the obvious -it's not like HobbyBoss kits have that many part to get the right way around :D

No doubt there's more in progress as we speak!

  12. Whenever it comes up it pretty much gets panned as a bad idea. The feathered edge of the airbrush is the trick.

Yes, that's the crux of the problem. The top coat is possible, as for brush painting you'd probably be using well-thinned coats which would be translucent individually. I tried it some years ago on a Hellcat in the blue/blue/white scheme. It showed through the inter blue and white no problem, but the darker sea blue pretty much covered it up. That said it was early days and now I think I could get it to work. The trick is thin coats (which helps avoid brush marks) and build them up gradually (which covers the streaking too - in theory)

    Here's my Hellcat tailplane

    and the fuselage

    IMG_1320.jpg

Not perfect by any means, but more skill and patience than mine could get a result.

It probably is more trouble than it's worth though as the underpainting will have a fairly hard edge and will end up looking like a blueprint. It may be possible to feather the edges or use dry brushing to blend them together, but there really is no substitute for the airbrush here, in truth. If you're committed to brush painting you could try experimenting with light washes in the middle of the panels, like the filter washes that armour modelers use. Again the edge would be the issue, but a thin enough wash applied several times to build it up may work as long as the contrasting shades were subtle enough. It's one of several ideas I want to experiment with at some stage.

  13. Ok for a first time air brush user who wants something that you can grow into my personal choice would be the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS and get the £100 compressor.

The Eclipse is an excellent generalist airbrush that will do whatever you want and will only be limited by your skill, it's also dead easy to operate and maintain.

I'd agree with that. I've had mine a bit under three years now, and I think I'm still growing into it. I certainly haven't got to the point where the airbrush is the limiting factor in what I can achieve. It's got to the stage now where I can go from empty worktop, spray a coat or two, clean up and all packed away in about 20 minutes if I need to. I think that says it all about the Iwata's ease of operation once you get into a routine. The other day I sprayed Humbrol Enamel, Xtracrylix and Tamiya Acrylic (with three different thinners) all in the same session with only flushing in between, which makes me think it's pretty flexible too.

  14. Don't give up mate, it's well worth i in the end.

This was one of my first etch enhanced kits and although far from perfect I was pleased with the results I got.

For cutting out etch I now use a new, sharp, rounded scalpel blade on a flat hard surface (I use a metal ruler). The 'pips' can then be cut off using a downward pressure with the same blade. I tried the grip and file method but just kept distorting things out of shape. The etch parts for my Belfast build have cleaned up nicely using this method.

For gluing I can do no better than recommend 'Gator grip glue'. It's no use where real strength is concerned (it's PVA), but it's fantastic for applying detail parts and dries completely clear too. An added bonus is that you get to deal with Ali from A2Z models who is a damn fine chap!

That gives you some alternatives, but try and find the one that works for you. i dare you to carry on with it and ask around here for any help you need.

    Good luck,

    Steve.
