Mel might look into a turbine Whirlwind, but that would be 2 to 3 years away. He did consider a Belvedere, but says economically, it's a non starter.

If he needs to get a great Whirlwind 10, then look no further than the Yorkshire Helicopter Preservation Group at Doncaster. They have the last to see UK service and it's finished in the 84 sqn UN scheme when it served in Cyprus.

  2. Chuffed to hear the walrus has sold so well, it's so refreshing to see something released that hasn't been done too often - in the case of the Walrus, only the  ex merit/ Smer kit was the only yhing close. Now what else do airfix have up thier sleeves, I can't wait to find out 🤗🤗

A Wellesley per chance? Or even a 1/48 Hampden 😏🖒🖒🖒🖒

Thats a nice bit if work. I to was fan of Lemmy - and Philthy Animal Taylor - and he came from just up the road from where I live. I saw Muttonchop in concert many moons ago and happily jumped up and down with everyone else on a very well sprung concert floor whilst watching Lemmy's lips move through clouds of dry ice whilst playing something like 'Bomber' at number 11 on the amps and being  unable to hear the lyrics! I didn't know that he was a modeller though.

    Cheers

    Simon

I knew he must have a good interest in militaria, but didn't know about him being a modeller.

However I was introduced to my first Motorhead concert in 1984- Sheffield city hall "No remorse" tour, after downing  a 1066sg lager at a certain bar with its own  brewed strong ales. Loved the concert, but ringing ears for 3 days.😆😆

    Cheers to you Lemmie. 🎸🕪🍺🍺🍺

    A little teaser for you...

This chap helped us out immensely during a recent research visit - what could we have been measuring? Keep your eyes peeled, you never know when or where the next announcement will pop up!

About time they replaced the old mold!😆

I'm looking forward to seeing this on the shelves - if airfix are keeping form, whatever the scale we're in for a treat.

  5. The members of the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum and volunteers from the VTTS are restoring the cockpit of this aircraft. The Vulcan was named "MAYFLOWER III" to deliver a special scrol to the states to celebrate the tricentenary of pilgrim fathers voyage.

There is a dedicated thread on Facebook which is showing  progress is going well.

So far the museum has spent around £6000, but they need help with sourcing parts and want to raise £3,500 donations to help complete the project.

If anyone can help with leads for parts or wish to make a donation please contact them on 01302 761616 or there is a just giving page set up via the Facebook thread.

I'm making iit straight from the box and doing EE235 from 616 sqn and it says to paint it  AS9 dark green and AS10 ocean grey on top and AS11  medium sea grey underneath but I was wondering if the Tamiya paints are a good match for these colours?

I know this is a well known aircraft and has been discussed many times before and colours could vary quite a bit but also how quickly would those colours fade anyway seeing as it's 1945?

Strangely enough also I can't find that many pics of 616 sqn Meteors of that time.

Hi , sadly photos of 616 Squadron's wartime  aircraft are few and far between, however there are a few B&W images on the IWM website- follow the search under collections  and put in 616 Squadron Meteor.  I  can only assume that fading was minimal as the Squadron only operated the wartime Mk III's for less than a year.

All the best with your build,

    Regards Adrian

It's done, finally.  Pretty involved model but turns out quite decent, and big, too big for my display case.  I can see another case coming as Trumpeter is releasing a 1/16 Panther.

What a cracking job of one of my favourite German tanks, it really looks superb🖒

As for the question of it being too big for your cabinet- I'd happily make some space to display it😆

well I~m going to have to get that little baby. 150 beer tokens or there abouts....getting pricey this stash building malarkey, isn't it?

I used too work with a stoker who was on her when she was sunk, he too passed away. I doubt it but your friends initials weren't FW were they?

I've only just seen your quote, I'm afraid they aren't one and the same - the family friend was called Ron and came from Bolsover, however it would have been a nice co- incident if it was the case.

  9. You're more than welcome- being born on the 10th July, I have a deep interest in the history of the Battle of Britain, the more I learn of it the more I appreciate not only the contribution of those who fought in the air battles, but that of those on the ground, from the young to the old.🖒

Both kits are 1/48 scale, the Hurricane being Airfix, while the Do 17 in ICM.

    Thanks for looking.

The wonderful thing about modelling is that you use a kit as a 3D blank canvas, completing the finished model as you wish. The most complex finishes are dioramas and vignettes depicting historical events.

Those which used aircraft are often depicted as ground based - in flight ones aren't common, but in this one, you've taken it to an amazing level.

I love this as it  re- enacts one of the most daring ways to bring down a foe - the deliberate ramming by another aircraft. During the Battle of Britain, I know of three occasions - this one, a Hurricane v Me109 and the disputed Anson v He111.

In the latter, Sgt Bruce Hancock, a trainee pilot with 6FTS was doing circuits around  RAF Windrush when he hit a Heinkel III which was bombing the airfield. Many believe it was a deliberate act, officialdom seems otherwise. Sadly none of the aircrew survived and Sgt Hancock was only found the day after.

  11. What a cracker!! Nice to see a Stug in Finnish colours - and so well done🖒. I knew a new a friend of mine bought an ex- Finnish army example back in 1991 and by pure coincidence I was driving north on the A1 - only to see it parked up on a low loader  in a south bound lay-by. Luckily I was not far from the next roundabout and  quick  turn around got me chance to see it in the flesh before it was restored. On asking the truck driver if it belonged to my friend, he confirmed it was and allowed me to have a look around it. It may have added a few miles to my ride home- but hey it was worth it🖒🖒🖒

  13. I can't help you with much info on X-craft General- other than I'm of  the understanding  that X24 was the one built by Marshall of Gainsborough and tested of the Trent wharf.

If I'm correct, that was almost in your doorstep 😆 otherwise I've got duff gen.

    Either way-happy building.
