  1. I see the point about Tamiya and the Spitfire, but do does the Lancaster and Halifax - albeit a smaller scale. To date Airfix have produced 3 moulds (standard) for Lancaster, Revell 2 & Hasegawa, even more if you include sub variants. The Halifax 1 Airfix and 2 Revell. The market is there.
  2. I know that American types ie, B17, B24 & B29 were and still are good sellers, even selling at a reasonable price. The Tamiya Lancaster still sells well despite the higher pricing. The evidence is also there that high price quality kits still sell in good numbers that justify investment. It is just surprising that it doesn't seem to be taken on board by producers. If we want it we need to shout it out
  3. As far as I'm aware the radiator set up was that of the MkVIII, MkIX. It had the retractable tail wheel and the rear canopy glazing flush with the door as opposed to stepped like previous marks. The only surviving example is with the Smithsonian in Washington. I hope that helps. Regards Rad
  4. I know this has probably been done a few times but, is it time for a proper call to manufacturers for some accurate British heavy bomber kits. When you consider how many kits there are in 1/72 scale, we are bereft of them in 1/48. The technology, demand & markets for them are all there. Other than a Stirling, examples of real Halifax and Lancaster are readily available. To date we have had 1 each of Halifax and Lancaster and 2 of vac form Halifax's- a bit sad really. So how do you folks out there feel?
  5. If I may I will add to the call for a new Halifax in 1/48 scale. Having a couple of them to work from i.e. Hendon & Trenton, the manufacturers have no excuse to get it wrong. As you've said back to the 1/32 build and appologies for any upset. Regards Adrian
  6. Yes a decent Halifax is way overdue,as are many of the British bombers when it comes to 1/48 and 1/32. So let us please allow other forum members their say and nip our exchanges in the bud. Adrian
  7. I think we can agree to disagree about the FM kit, In fairness we can go on and on about its faults or merits, but not on this thread- it's about someone else's kit & we shouldn't be hijacking it. So let's get back to an amazing project. Regards Adrian
  8. Hi Tom, In 40 of building models I've come a long way in knowing what I want from a model, enjoyment at the challenge. For me the base rule of model building is every kit is a blank canvas, my kit would be considered as mediocre by some, but still I was happy with my finished model. Yes I cheated by using Tamiya beaufighter engines & after market guns, some of the flat transparencies were from an old CD case, but I'm happy. In many ways it's on par with kits from the 1960's yet most love the only 1/48 Lanc kit which still needs a lot of work because of its age & despite its detail. Have an open mind, do some homework & enjoy your Halifax. But be inspired by the build on this thread. Regards Adrian.
  9. Why not build a few models and fill gaps with images? Just an idea
  10. I think Byron that you're pretty close to the mark, I would imagine the only limitations would be availability and access to the various paints. Without sounding to daft,I can only assume they would have used standard USAAF colours from on station stores. Luckily they would have all the base colours and B/W.
  11. To be fair to Airfix, I'm not an engineer, but the only stumbling blocks would be that given the age of the older mouldings, would they be able to re- machine them? Would the older moulds be up to adapting to new manufacture methods, ie slide mould technology? Or is it more of a case of brand new tooling? Could the company afford this. In an ideal world it would be brilliant. Regards Rad
  12. Second that about the spitfire, even if they just chucked the Hurricane's Merlin in the box it would be a boon. While they're at it, the 109 could do with a revamp.
  13. This looks amazing!!!! I did the FM kit a few years ago, I though that was taxing, but take my hat off to you. Regards Rad
  14. Looking forward to watching this build, there's one in the stash, having done only 1 other CA kit, this will give a lot of help to make the best of their own kits. Looks superb what you have achieved so far, love the use of plasticard to hide a difficult seam- keep up the good work. Regards Rad .
  15. Hmm, looks a good kit from what I've seen of the sprues, but looks better as it goes together. Looking very good so far, I must admit this kit is on my wants list as they had a few flying from RAF Worksop post-war & a friend, who was from Worksop did his National Service there, so got to cycle home every night!! The former airfield was only a mile or so from where I was brought up, so hence the interest. Regards Rad
  16. Hmmm, you could be onto something with the space saving idea!!!! To take it a little further, how's about the concept of larger scale cockpit and nose section kits? Just imagine for example a 1/12 scale lightning or Hunter cockpit or a 1/16 scale Lancaster or Halifax. There is some merit or potential in your idea. P.s. You're more than welcome about the info re XS897, I miss seeing the old girl at Donny, but at least she is safe. Regards Rad
  17. Pulled up the pictures of the diorama, it looks out of this world. Saw the price thought ouch!!!!! Then nearly fell off my chair laughing when I saw an advert below one of the images for mortgages!!!
  18. What a fantastic build, love the Lightning, but sadly it left us at Doncaster for pastures new a couple of years ago. XS897, last flew with 5 sqn as AC. Although she will never roar to the sound of Avons, what a survivor she is, landed on her belly, nearly scrapped twice, wings almost cut off with a JCB, nearly became a nose section only, new set of wings fitted at SYAM & now back to sqn service, albeit as a sq. gate guard. It's now on display at RAF Coningsby with a small belly tank representing an F.3. One of only a handful of aircraft that have gone full circle-almost!!!
  19. Wattle and daub.........,.luxury!!!!!' We used to dream about wattle and daub!!! And we used to lick the decals with our tongue!!!
  20. That's ok, it's hard for us old hands. At least I'm to young to have used polyfilla-just!!!!!
  21. Hi Dave, if you aren't familiar with Milliput it's a 2 part epoxy putty. Been using it for donkey's years. Regards Adrian
  22. Still I must admit I am tempted to buy & convert one to a Mk 1 Meteor. It'll be easier than building a vac form Mk8, which I enjoyed building about 15 years ago.
  23. I agree with the point about using Milliput. All to often manufacturers are expected to have everything spot on whatever the cost. So what if you have to do a bit of work to get the best out of a kit- that's part of the real art of modelling. It matters not that there are Misplaced panel lines, rivets or a discrepancy of 00.5 mm, not to me anyway. If you saw the real thing at more than 3m you begin to lose detail.
