  1. All,

We should all be celebrating the fact that we now have a cheap / mainstream / and (from what I see) great kit of an important British aircraft. I do not build resin, nor do I have the paitence for PE, however I seem to have inherited Noah's desire to purchase two or more of most things. The fact that this little Vampire is very affordable and accurate must make this excellent value for money and from what I read here, most members will buy more than one. Sure - sink marks and what some would term "deep panel lines" aside - I do not see why anyone would not want to praise Airfix for giving us a long awaited subject rather than scorn them into oblivion.

    Give me a Vamp over a new F-16 / Bf109 anyday..

Airfix - you have made many modellers very happy - Please keep reading these forums (if you do?) and taking credit for a job well done.

    Cheers.. Dave.

  2. Paul,

Excellent review. I have two kits on their way via mail order and just cannot wait to prize mine open. You are spot on about Airfix's latest decals and quality. I suspect, like most modellers out there I rarely consider building the kit manufacturer's chosen subject(s), however this Vampire is that good that I just might build my two exactly as Airfix have offered.

Can I just say - long live Airfix and most importantly its excellent backing by Hornby. This years Airfix range is going to be very hard to resist.

    Cheers... Dave.

  3. Great to hear all these positive vibes about this kit. I've got two on the way from Hattons, however living "Down Under" will need to wait a little longer yet. If it's better than their new tool P-51's then we are really in for a treat. I wonder how quick the initial supply will sell out. Could it be some type of 1/72 kit sales record??

Xtradecal - where's your forthcoming decal sheet - RAAF Telstars please... and many dayglo RAF versions as well - Thanks.

Cheers and lookng forward to any reviews (in box or otherwise).

    Dave.

  4. Hopefully the Spitfire Vc is a brand new (Mainstream manufacturer) tool.. How long do we have to wait for a cheap / quick build Vc to hit he shelves.

Looks like we may have to wait until Airfix announce their's sometime in the distant future. Both 1/72 & 1/48 please.

    Cheers.. Dave.

  5. Speaking of Airfix Starter kits, is it true that the decal sheets supplied with these kits DO NOT include stencils etc?

I read somewhere that the RAF P-51D Starter Kit in 112 Sqd colours does not even include the Aircraft's serial number?? Not sure if this is true however.

I would think that the RNZAF Vampire would be a popular choice, however if the stencils are not supplied with the decal sheet, I see this kit as a "No Brainer".

Shame really, as Airfix would probably sell more of these if the "common stencil" decals were supplied as in their mainline range.

    Cheers.. Dave.

  6. Although I do not have many "Runs on the board" so to speak - I find that as long as the clear parts are "futured" or gloss coated, Tamiya Thin Liquid Cement seems to work quite well. That GS Hypo cement does sound pretty good however. Just searched for it on ebay and it costs next to nothing. I'll be placing my order shortly.

    Cheers .. Dave.

  7. Nope.

I want to know this stuff. Apart form learning whether the kits is accurate and what problems it may have before I pay for it, I also find I learn things about the aircraft.

I do get sick of the "it looks like a xxxx to me " or "Just build it and be happy" comments though.

I totally agree. Apart from all the personal jibes and comments, this is a good forum about a fairly important British aircraft. Had I not logged on to Britmodeller and viewed the photos and read all the comments, I would have purchased one (or two) of these kits and have been totally disappointed. It would have ended up with all the other crap old kits I have or hopefully sold off on ebay or a modellers swap meet for a loss.. Looking forward to reading the comments on Airfix's new T.11, however I trust Airfix and already have 2 kits on backorder.

    Cheers and happy modelling... Dave.

  8. I know the picture that you are talking about, however doubt that it will be used in he new tool 1/72 kit.

From what I've seen, this kit will be issued as an early Mk.1 with Fabric wings. The Calendar artwork features aircraft from 1 Sqd during the BoB campaign. Fabric wing Hurricanes would not have been seen on the frontline during the summer of 1940 (although I may be wrong)..

    Cheers Dave.

  9. I know we are all being a little premature, however what about those wheel well cut-outs? If I'm correct, I can see that the wheel wells are seperate parts that will probably need to be attached to either the bottom wing, or underneath the top wing (if it all lines up). These appear to have the squared off outboard ends, however the cutouts on the wings themsleves are too circular too me. It may require a little filing here and there, however should we realy have to do this in this day and age. I can live with replacing the canopy and intakes, however the rest is fairly major surgery to me.

i still believe a certain 'other' company would still do a better job than this. How many of you believe that Airfix will get any of there 2013 releases wrong. I've already put my pre-orders in with the knowledge that these kits will be fantastic. i cannot wait for this year to end and read all the new release Airfix 2014 related forums in December. I felt like a 10 year old when they announced their 2013 range.

    Cheers to all - Dave.

  10. Is that an FB.9 or an FB.5?? I cannot see any differences with either port or starboad engine intakes.

The rear engine exhaust nozzle looks a little long as well. Almost Venom-esque.

Not sure about the Wheel Well cutouts, arn't they supposed to be squared off at the outboard sides (similar to early BF109's)???

What a shame as I really like the way they have split the mould with the wings and fuselage attached.

We can only hope that Airfix will upscale there 1/72 new mould to 48th scale for 2014. At least you can be assured that they won't get the basics wrong.

    Cheers (a very disappointed) Dave.

  11. I'm getting there... A bit at a time. Got approx half the MA range and just under half the MC range at the mo.

Now if we all chipped in a pound or two and bought pte1643 one paint bottle each, we just all might get our answers earlier. When you think of it, it's probably cheaper than all of us doing a similar / half cocked experiment ourselves anyway?

I had a play the other day and found that their Model Air 71.016 was a good match for RAF Dark Green, whilst their Grey Primer was (to my eye ) not a bad match for Medium Sea Grey and perhaps Post War Light Aircraft Grey - in a Matt Format (not a real fan of Semi Gloss paints). Thats to my eye. I'm sure others have come up with other matches. If so please post here.

Cheers and keep the topic rolling.

    Dave.

  12. I asked a similar question some time ago, bascally I wanted the RAF/FAA colour chart from their WWII paint set, as I'd bought the individual colours separately.

Paul from Little Cars obliged... (Post #3)... http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=234909020&#entry916639

That should be a reasonalbe starting point.

Many thanks, that's a great little leaflet. I have quite a few of these colours so will give them a try.

Not sure if you've had the chance to apply most of these colours, however do you believe they are a good representation of RAF colours? I found that Vallejos RLM02 equivalent was quite a bit darker than it should be. I'm thinking about adding a fair bit of white to the basic colours, however as i'm a bit of a slack ar$e would rather something that looks good straight out of the bottle.

Cheers and thanks once again. Dave.

  13. Tornado,

Thought I'd put my 20 cents in (or is that 15p). I took the plunge a while back when I made a few Luftwaffe models and did not have any RLM colours in my paint collection. I purchased a few Model Air paints from an eBay retailer in the UK as my local hobby shop in Brisbane did no stock these. A few mates convinced me to go the airbrush way, however the whole mixing paint / thinner / ratio thing then firing through the brush was rather hit or miss for me. Almost to the point where i was considering chucking the whole hobby in (well maybe not that drastic).

Anyway my point is that these model air paints gave me the confidence to keep going as they took the initial hassle away. I do use a few drops of their Medium thinner and the whole airbrush paint application is way easier. I have to agree with others above, the colours are a bit hit and miss and quite a good deal darker. Spray on a coat of clear and your way off where you really wanted your colour to be.

This then is my next issue, which will be to either search their range for a better match or mix with a dose of white. Anyone got a better combination of Model Air numbers for the basic RAF WW2 colour range?

Cheers and good luck. If these paints increase your confidence like it did to me - then thats not a bad thing.

    Cheers. Dave

  14. I had a similar problem with 1/48 Meteor F.3 decals and was directed to Fantasy Printshop decals who make quite a large range of code letters and numbers in various colours. Don't forget to view the Xtradecal range on the Hannants website. They have a set that gives you both 24 & 30inch codes. I'm sure you'll find something that will fit.

    Cheers

    Dave.

  15. Blackbird Models 2013...we will be doing a Maltese sheet

That's Fantastic news.. after yesterday's Airfix 2013 announcements, looks like i'm in for a great year.

Can you give me any idea what subjects will be included.Just found the website and no mention of this there.

I take it that with a profile name of "Blackbird" you may have some insider knowledge?

Any additional information such as possible release dates would also be great to know.

Cheers and thanks for thr reply.

    Dave.

  16. Mr. Airfix,

Can I just say I am very, very pleased with your selection of new kits for 2013.

I was a little sceptical a few days ago, however you have made many model fans happy during this festive time of year.

It would be great to somehow get an approx timeline of when these kits will hit the shelves.

Of the sixty new releases, I believe I already have my money spent on at least twenty of those.

Vampires, Lightning, Fabric wing Hurricane, Lancs, 48 Javelin, Bomb supply set... the list goes on and on.

Congratulations and please release these as soon as possible.

I will sleep very happy tonight.

    Cheers . Dave.

  17. I know this'll sound a bit odd, but are we certain that Airfix are announcing the 2013 range on the 19th

As typically they've always done it on the 24th.......

According to the Airfix Facebook page

    "It's coming...2013 THE range announcement..."

Fingers crossed we will know in a few hours. By the way, most of you Brits better be off to bed. It's getting pretty late in that part of the world. Can you loan us some of your winter weather, Dam hot and sticky in Brisbane at the moment. Might just need to hop in the pool for a quick dip.

    Cheers. Dave.

  18. The "New for 2012" page has vanished from the Airfix website...

    John

Yeh - I noticed this a couple of days ago. At one stage you could still view the page via the Airfix products link, however that seems to have gone as well. Perhaps they are working on a new 2013 link?

Not long now until we hear the news. Although I'd love a brace of new moulds, I'm not getting my hopes up. At least that way ill be pleasantly surprised when this list comes out. A new Vampire seems to be happening - that's one big tick. And it appears that the box art is already done, judging by the advent Calender. Lets hope it's a soon to be released job.

Cheers. And hopefully the Airfix Santa will be kind to us all.

    Dave.

  19. So go on then! who like me is going to check in at midnight tomorrow night, just incase the news is released then.......

Thankfully it will 10.00am in Brisbane. Quite a more gentlemanly time. For once (besides the weather) living in Australia has its benefits. I'm also hoping that the Lightning will be anything but an F.6. Why can't we just start with an F.1 and get a new release mark each year thereafter.

    Chees. Dave.
