Chris,
It's not just the pen-nib fairings but they are the most obvious difference I admit. IIRC, the later marks had increased camber at the leading edge outboard of the kink, also, earlier marks had only two rows of vortex generators on the wing upper surface.
Removing the centre row of vortex generators would be relatively easy, fixing the camber less so, I guess it all boils down to how obvious it is and whether you're bothered - personally I don't think I'd be too fussed!
I'd also like to see a FAW7 back end.
I'm curious as to what Sqn markings will come with the kit - I'd like to see 60Sqn and 33 Sqn myself.
Wez
Dear Wez,
The other day, I just so happened to pop into my local hobby store and flicked through the 2013 Airfix catalogue. If I remember correctly it did see that the Big Jav will come with decals for 64, 228 OCU & No. 3 Squadrons. I'm not sure if 3 squadron received FAW.9 / 9R's however I do believe that 5 squadron inherited some from another unit - this may be a misprint?? . I don't think we should worry either way as I'm sure those nice lads at Xtradecal will supply whatever unit your looking for. I did not know about the extended L/E's nor the Vortex Generators.. you really do learn something from the website everyday.
Cheers .. Dave.

No need for a photo, I can confirm you get markings for 72 and 207 in a black finish, together with the original red, white and light aircraft grey scheme with the Toucan on the tail.
Rob,
Many thanks for the confirmation. Might just have to put my order in then. Cheers Dave.

Teenmodeller, keep going young man, at least you still have plenty of time on your side. Before you know it you'll be building like the pros. Most of us on here have been building kits as long as we can remember. One thing that I can say is that the older you get, the harder it is to find the time to sit down and enjoy this hobby. Beware of nasty distractions like women, drink, marriage, mortgages and the odd kid or two. Enjoy the freedom of youth whilst you've got it.
Cheers .. Dave.-

I picked my kit up today, the tooling is the old tooling but the decals are very nice you even get MDC and prop decals saves the masking

The only downside is the canopy is absolutely shocking! I've emailed Airfix for a new one

The black marks are in the plastic so can't even sand it out

Any chance of adding a photograph of the complete decal sheet?
Just trying to work out if both 72 & 207 Sqd decals are included. It appears this may be the case by viewing the caption of the decal choice on the top right hand corner.
Cheers .. Dave

What a lovely pair of trainers. I have the same idea of modelling these myself.
Cheers.. Dave

Looking great. I have the same decal sheet, however unable to find the Hasegawa kit to apply these too.
Keep the photos coming....
Cheers.. Dave.

I like it.. Have sent my answer as well. Cheers.. Dave.

Have always liked that spalsh of yellow with the Romanian schemes. Takes me back to the old Matchbox 1/72 decal sheet.
Just love the underside shot with excellent weathering. You are on a winner with this model. Well Done & Cheers .. Dave

Martin,
Congratulations on a supurb build. Of all the what-if F-111K's i've seen on the net' this must be one of the most accurate (if you can actually say that about a what-if aircraft). I'm sure many others will agree.
Cheers .. Dave

Thanks for the link to the sprue photo's. First impressions are pretty positive, although it's a shame that the radial cowls are split in two. That's another 8 seam lines to clean up.
Oh well - probably should'nt complaint it's a Mk.11 Lanc for heavens sake - who else is gonna come out with one of these beauties.. Cheers .. Dave

All NMF buffs,
OK, I have to come clean here. I'm pretty sure I've ruined my little Airfix Mustang by using one of Testors Buffable lacquers (Stainless Steel). It just looks way too dark to me. I've buffed it, coated it with clear, however I'm not happy with it.
Question. Can I spray a coat of Alclad Aluminium White over the clear finish? Not sure what the result will be. I read that Alclad likes a good primer, so was wondering if the hard clear finish would take it or not.
Hopefully someone has tried it and has the answer.
Cheers .. Dave.

Peter,
Thanks for your reply.. Must get me some of that Alclad stuff.. Cheers and I'd go the Mitchell as well. Dave.

Mike,
These are cracking little kits are'nt they? Your construction and painting are faultless. Looking forward to final completion. I've got a couple of RAAF subjcets on the way and besides breaking both Control Columns?? am having heaps of fun. Cheers.. Dave.
-
Pete,
Welcome and as others have commented - Great build. Can you tell me what Alclad you used as the base NMF colour, was it the Aluminium White?.
Must say that looks like the perfect shade for 1/72. Some other "Silvers" seem to be a tad dark.
Cheers. Dave.

Sweedish Saab J29 Tunnan vs. Ruski Mig 15UTI ??? - "Swig 44"
Cannot tell where the join is though - you have covered this up nicely.
Cheers. Dave.

I wanna know what's to the left of the Big Javelin. Is that one of the new Lanc Mk'II's all painted up?
That Javelin does look good. I'm sure that once I see another excellent Adam Tooby Boxart design, i'll probably fall for this and buy one as well. Just not sure if this big beast will fit inside my relatively small glass cabinet. Be a shame not to put on that huge refuelling probe!!
Cheers.. Dave.

I really like this scheme as well. Takes a lot of guts to complete what you've just done, however the rewards must be really satisfying.
Well Done.
Cheers.. Dave.

I'll start with the positives. They make great RAAF subject matter.Nice clean build.
Dave, out of curiosity what's your problem with Aussie Decals?
Unfortunately, the overall quality is way below what one might expect for the price you pay. They seem to go by the name Novascale on eBay, however the decals are marked Aussie decals. Now I'm a pretty fussy modeller, however there's something quite wrong when the one serial number is not in line and has different font and characters. Don't start me on their idea of what they call a roundel. You don't even have to look that hard to spot that most of these are not circular and the colour register is too dull. Try looking at them under any type of magnification and you will be amazed how poor these decals are. Sorry - I'm not normally that negative, however ill never purchase another sheet again as long as my eyesight keeps me in this hobby.
-
Great news about the Xtradecals information - 2 sheets should have plenty of great subjects, how about an all RAF version and a secondary Export sheet. Having saying that - the kit decals are fantastic.
My two kits arrived from those great chaps at Hattons yesterday. I believe Airfix could have sold this as a series 3 kit, smilar to their Sabre, however I'm glad they squeezed all the parts in a Series 2 box. Good on you Airfix.
Cheers .. Dave.
-
That's not fair.. I only had plans to purchase one of these kits, however having now seen the boxart and decal options - I think i'll collect a pair of these as well.
It appears that my Airfix budget for 2013 will have soon doubled by the time all these kits are released..
Cheers.. Dave.

The first pic takes your breath away, then the supurb quality continues throughout.
US Navy weathering is top notch... love it. Actually Love them all..
Great 2012, roll on 2013
Cheers .. Dave.

Sean,
I don't want to spoil the party however those decals should be applied to a late war P-40N / Kittyhawk IV, not a P-40C Tomahawk.
Having saying that - it looks quite good. "Watch my Form' is a pretty famous RAAF P-40, so although I loath Aussie Decals, I'm pretty sure thay would not show these markings on a Tomahawk style P-40.
There's probably more decals on this expensive sheet to have another crack at an accurate P-40M/N. Academy's 1/72 kits are rather good.
Cheers and once again sorry for being corrective - Dave.
-
Very impressive... Just love those belts - Tamiya tape you say?
I've been struggling to do homemade seat belts for ages.. Any clues with your technique would be gratefully appreciated.
This is a lovely replica of a great aircraft. Good to hear that the decals went well. I've been tempted to buy a sheet myself.
Cheers.. Dave.

There are a couple of model shops in Perth and surrounds that are pretty good at getting Airfix product in - eventually. I am hoping that they will get a reasonable number of these in (although for some reason I never saw the new tool Gnat over here). I would prefer to support them. Worst comes to worst I will try Lucky Model - being closer to us the postage is a good deal less.[/quote
Simon,
Don't be put off by the postage prices from the UK. Please do yourself a favour and go to ehattons.com. They are mainly a model train company from Liverpool, however stock all the range of Airfix models on offer. With the great exchange rate at the moment (and long may it last) they also deduct the VAT from the final price. If it's a Gnat your after you will pick this up for less than $A10.00 (most probaly $8.00-ish) including postage. They charge only GBP2.00 for Airfix series 1 kits and only GBP4-5 for most others. It really pays if you buy 2-3 kits at a time. I had 2 x Vampires on pre-order and was only charged $A21.00. I should have mine in about a week from now. My theory here is that you buy Asian manufacturer kits from Asia (Tamiya, Hasegawa - Hobbylink Japan) and Airfix from Hattons... Trust me on this one.. good luck.
Cheers.. Dave.

Al, many thanks for submitting the kit decal choices. I duly ordered my copy from Hattons after I got the green light above.
Cheers once again and good luck with your build.. Dave.
