  1. Just to prove not all the decals are off register!

    image-1-1_zps84bf7253.jpeg

Like all new decals supplied with these Airfix kits, they look quite usable to me. Isn't it a nice chance to actually consider building these kits with the manufacturers chosen schemes rather than having to always purchase after market decal sheets.

    Cheers.. Dave.

  2. Ive built Baders Spit using this boxing and markings from a Model Alliance sheet. Dont have the remains of the sheet to hand but i think its MA72114.

    Arabest,

    Geoff.

    Jazzie,

Thanks for the reply.. Did you use the round oil cooler and prop supplied with the kit. Not sure if the prop on the additional sprue would suit a Mk. Va? The blades look a little thin and spinner quite blunt, however i'm happy to be corrected on this. I thought I knew Spits fairly well, however I seem like a novice compared to some other folk on this forum. Ive got enough decals, serials, codes, roundels to last a life time, so not sure if I should spend any more cash on another decal sheet..

    Many thanks.. Dave.

  3. A bit of an old thread, however does anyone else have any knowledge of Airfix re-releasing this kit as a Spitfire Va with Bader decals?

If so, it would be interesting to see if they add Underwing roundels, as they seem to have stated (via other forum posts) that Baders a/c did not carry such markings.

I know all the parts are included for a Va, however having the serial as one decal would be easier than lining up 10 indiviuals letters/numbers - am I being a lazy ar$e??

    Cheers .. Dave

  4. Since it will no doubt be a while before the Tiffie shows up on this side of the pond, I ordered one from Airfix today. Maybe this time they'll not charge me that pesky VAT! :)

    Cheers,

    Bill

    Bill,

As a fellow Non-UK resident (Australia) I can honestly recommend that you try the lads at Hattons - www.ehattons.com

I've been purchasing all the latest Airfix kits from them. They do not charge VAT, the postage to Australia is next to nothing and you get them before your mates do ?? I often receive my goods inside 7 days.

Overnight they sent me an email to say that my two pre-ordered Typhoons were on their way. The service is excellent.

I liken it to living in the UK, although seeing the Sun a bit more often.

    Cheers... Dave.

  5. Chris, thanks for your input, & yes, I reckon a FAQ would be a great idea, it might save endless repetition of the sorts of queries we love to make. From what you say then, the bulge on the wheel wells, floor bit is just the standard carb intake ducting, I really should've recognised that from the old version ;), & the oval shape it hangs off is the engine bay floor? I was getting somewhat (still am) trying to match the different sprue bits in the correct orientation. I'm just itching to lay my hands on one of these.

    Steve

Steve, hope you've put your Hattons order in!! Ive had this on preorder since the 19 Dec announcement. Might even get mine in a week or two.. Cheers Dave.
  6. Funnily enough, I probably wouldn't have bothered asking this question a week ago, however I found a couple of half baked 1/72 Airfix Spitfire 1's in a box and decided to clean them up a bit. These are the original 1979 moulds with raised panel lines. I am finding these a welcome change from rescribing lost panel lines after construction and at a distance the smooth finish is probably more akin to a scale finish anyway. Best of all they also look the part and are quite a lot of fun. It will be hard to display these with Airfix's new 1/72 "deep panel lined" Spits.

I was hoping that the 48 Hurricane may just be one of those classic kits that is rather basic, however accurate in shape and looks.

Cheers and thanks or continuing this thread. .. Dave

  7. The drawings are delightfully vague on this subject; all you read is that internal areas were to be silver, but you have to decide, for yourself, if the wheel wells were considered to be internal areas. There is a clue, since, at the end of the war, internals went over to grey-green, and there's evidence of grey-green wells on XIXs, 22s, etc., so you can go from there.

Incidentally "stabs" is American for "tailplane." :evil_laugh:

    Edgar

Edgar, excuse me for sounding a trifle vague, however does this mean that prior to the XIX the wheel wells and doors were painted some other colour to Grey Green? Was it the undersurface colour or silver once again. I understand this is not an exact science, however it sounds like there are many more people here that are more knowledgable than I am on Spit colours. I for one would love to hear more.

    Cheers.. Dave.

  8. That's a great photo Jennings. Must search a little harder. Looks like silver to me as well. Would be nice to know if a/c produced at the factory after the B&W scheme was introduced (early 1939?) were silver as well, or if the whole damn lot was sprayed in black and white respectively. I'm building two 1/72 kits at the moment (or until something else takes my fancy / interest), so one of each might be a nice change. Can't go wrong that way I suppose.

    Cheers. ..Dave.

  9. Why bother reissuing these old, tired, clapped out models. Especially when you can get the infanetly better Hasegawa kit for a few bucks less and the new Italeri kit for a few bucks more. Someone please put these old models out of their misery.

Brad, thanks for the feedback. Would be over the moon to get a Hasegawa Mk.1, however from what I hear and search, this is pretty hard to come by these days. Do you know where I can grab one?.

    Cheers... Dave, Brisbane.

  10. All,

Just noticed the good old Hurricane Mk. 1 (1980 mould - I think) was available on the Airfix website.

I had this kit as a 12 year old and recall it being quite nice, although a little chunky in places.

Decal options on the box do not seem to match the Paint and Accessories guide as mentioned in the Airfix link below.

To all those Hurricane fans - is this kit still an accurate build. Any noticable flaws that need mentioning?

One thing is for sure - the boxart onlone should move it off the shelves.

    Cheers .. Dave.

  11. All,

Quick question with hopefully a quick answer.

What would be the best colours to paint the w-well colours & internal u/c doors of a per-war black & white under-surfaced Spitfire. There are a couple of old photos around which suggest that the doors at least where painted in corresponding black & white, including wheel hubs. (Ref. Airfix Classic aircraft No. 1 Spitfire - pages 24 & 25).

Any other suggestions or reference referrals would be gratefully appreciated.

    Cheers.... Dave.

  12. I was hoping to swindle my little kiddies into getting their hard working dad a nice big Javelin for Father's Day, however it appears that this schedule is already running approx 2 months late.

I just might have to settle on a Harrier Gr.1, which is probably a little closer to the amount of money that "Mum" will give them to spend on me anyway? I don't suppose that bearded man with the sack full of toys is also a britmodeller member?? If so PM me and I'll pass on my home address. Thanks.

On the other hand I would rather wait a couple of months, then have Airfix release their new kits with flaws or quality control issues.

    Cheers .. Dave.

  13. Fellow Spitfire modellers,

The Spit in all it's glorious forms is probably a kit that we have all build at least once. I for one have built many in the past, and have many still boxed up awaiting assembly.

Not sure if this has been discussed previously, however I am asking a general question " what is the best way to assembly Spitfire wings ". Most modern-ish kits seem to offer the wings in three parts. Port upper wing, Starboard upper wing and one continuous lower wing part. All kit instructions guide you to cement the wing assembly first, then attach this to the completed fuselage.

Is it just me? Each time I have done this, I am left with a nasty gap to fill between the wing-body joint. To eliminate this, I am tempted to attach the upper wings to the fuse first ( with appropriate dihedral ) then attach the lower wing later. I am hoping that this will reduce the wing-body upper wing clean up?

So I suppose I'm asking you all which process would you take and has anyone attempted the latter technique? Probably should add that I mainly build 1/72, however I have even tried Tamiya's 1/48 kits and seemed to have got this wrong as well - pretty bad hey!

Cheers and looking forward to some response. .. Dave

  14. Having seen the preview of this book it seems to match a lot of the research that I have been doing myself so I`m looking forward to reading it a lot. I hope that it isn`t delayed any longer because I ordered my copy in October!!

I`ve got a book being published myself about Malta this summer!

    Come on Mushroom,...finger out!

    All the best

    Tony

Tony, any chance you could enlighten us with some inside information about your new book? How about a list of chapters for a start.

Always had a keen interest with the air war over Malta, so can happily say that I will purchase a copy.

    Cheers .. Dave.
