New Xtradecal Javelin decals - for Airfix 1/48
Rabbit Leader replied to Rabbit Leader's topic in Aircraft Cold War
Dear BlackBart, From glancing through the 2013 Catalogue at my LHS, I believe the kit options are 64, 228 OCU and what what listed as 3 Squadron? (However by my research No. 3 Sqd only used the FAW.4 variant). Perhaps its a typo for No. 5 Squadron. One thing for sure, you can bet that like all modern Airfix kits - the decal sheet will be fantastic. Bet you'd never thought anyone would have said that a few years ago !! Cheers.. Dave. -
New Xtradecal Javelin decals - for Airfix 1/48
Rabbit Leader replied to Rabbit Leader's topic in Aircraft Cold War
Perhaps Airfix is going to produce a conversion set all on their own - ala Valiant PR / Tanker?? I'm sure it will sell.. Cheers.. Dave. -
All, Just noticed that Hannants have listed 2 sheets of Xtradecal 1/48 Javelin decals as "Future releases". See links http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X48125 & http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X48126 Looks like options for No's 5, 6(?), 23, 25, 29, 33, 60, 64, & 85 Squadrons. Not sure what the No. 6 Sqd option is.. thought they were flying Venoms & Canberras in the Desert somewhere.. Could be a slight typo. All we need now is the kit.. Cheers.. Dave.

Airfix Yellowjacks Gnat - Decal options?
Rabbit Leader replied to Rabbit Leader's topic in Aircraft Cold War
All, Thanks for the feedback regarding my query.. As I use Matt paints, then apply a Gloss varnish (if required) I truly forgot about Humbrol's Yellow #69.. .... however I do find Andy Woods comments above quite interesting... Bill Clark's comments above are also interesting.. would love to see that paint samples if you can dig them up.. Cheers and many thanks.. Dave. -
Airfix 1/72 Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib Sprue Shots
Rabbit Leader replied to Wonderland Models's topic in Aircraft WWII
"Rocket rails and stone guards will be available seperately (£2.50 for a pair of stone guards and £3.00 for a set of Mk.3 rails, but are not listed on my website yet)." Colin, GBP3.00 for the Mk. 3 Rocket Rails sounds like a good deal.. Please let us all know when these are available to order. Might just have to put a couple of these aside on my next Freightdog order. Cheers .. and many thanks Dave.- 212 replies

Just wondering if anyone has seen the decal sheet for the new Airfix Yellowjacks Gnat. Do they provide serial options for all 5 a/c or just the one. If only one - which one? As side from that, I would also be interested in what Humbrol paint option has been called out - 24 Trainer Yellow or 99 Lemon Yellow.. By my tiring eyes it looks more like a Lemon shade to me.. Cheers.. Dave.

Airfix 1/48th Spitfire XIX
Rabbit Leader replied to gazza l's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Gazza, Looks great to me. I think Arfix have really captured the look of the XIX very well and your subtle weathering brings this out nicely. You may receive a few comments about your choice of using 3 spoke wheel hubs on this actual aircraft, as I have read that early production XIX's may have still used the 4 spokers. To be honest, I prefer the 3 spokes and actually used this on m 1/72 bird. One can never be too sure and at the end of the day.. It's what you like anyway. Congratulations on a great build. Cheers.. Airfix 1/72 Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib Sprue Shots
Rabbit Leader replied to Wonderland Models's topic in Aircraft WWII
I suppose your comments that the Airfix kit is "wrong" and "check your photographs" can be taken by some as being a little direct. None of us were there (although in a strange way most of us probably wish we were), so no one will actually know for sure the exact details about any WW2 subject. If anything may I suggest that if you ask questions or make statements always come across that there is always some element of doubt in your understanding. You will be surprised how quickly others will correct you. Please do not take my comments as condescending, continue to enjoy the hobby and welcome to Britmodeller. Cheers.. Dave.- 212 replies

Airfix 1/72 Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib Sprue Shots
Rabbit Leader replied to Wonderland Models's topic in Aircraft WWII
OK - let's now move on to Rocket Rails. The references I have (many by our expert Chris Thomas) show a difference in Rocket Rails from Mk. 1 (as supplied by Airfix) to Mk. 3 as the war progressed. Are there any dates / time period when this occurred? Did certain squadrons convert at a staggered period? Would it be accurate to depict a 1945 Typhoon with Upper C1 roundels with Mk. 1 rocket rails? Am I being too pedantic?? . Hopefully someone may be a position to shed some light on this. Thanks in advance. Cheers.. Dave- 212 replies

Airfix 1/72 Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib Sprue Shots
Rabbit Leader replied to Wonderland Models's topic in Aircraft WWII
Like all new decals supplied with these Airfix kits, they look quite usable to me. Isn't it a nice chance to actually consider building these kits with the manufacturers chosen schemes rather than having to always purchase after market decal sheets. Cheers.. Dave.- 212 replies

Vitor, What a lovely little Gnat. Just love the white edging applied to the canopy. I've got three of these kits myself and doubt any will turn out as good as this.. One can always dream however. Cheers.. Dave.

Jazzie, Thanks for the reply.. Did you use the round oil cooler and prop supplied with the kit. Not sure if the prop on the additional sprue would suit a Mk. Va? The blades look a little thin and spinner quite blunt, however i'm happy to be corrected on this. I thought I knew Spits fairly well, however I seem like a novice compared to some other folk on this forum. Ive got enough decals, serials, codes, roundels to last a life time, so not sure if I should spend any more cash on another decal sheet.. Many thanks.. Dave.

A bit of an old thread, however does anyone else have any knowledge of Airfix re-releasing this kit as a Spitfire Va with Bader decals? If so, it would be interesting to see if they add Underwing roundels, as they seem to have stated (via other forum posts) that Baders a/c did not carry such markings. I know all the parts are included for a Va, however having the serial as one decal would be easier than lining up 10 indiviuals letters/numbers - am I being a lazy ar$e?? Cheers .. Dave

That looks pretty good. I'm sure the new Airfix kit will be better, however for a quick build I would almost consider this one. If only they could come up with an easy way to rig the damn thing... Cheers.. Dave.

Airfix 1/72 Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib Sprue Shots
Rabbit Leader replied to Wonderland Models's topic in Aircraft WWII
Bill, As a fellow Non-UK resident (Australia) I can honestly recommend that you try the lads at Hattons - www.ehattons.com I've been purchasing all the latest Airfix kits from them. They do not charge VAT, the postage to Australia is next to nothing and you get them before your mates do ?? I often receive my goods inside 7 days. Overnight they sent me an email to say that my two pre-ordered Typhoons were on their way. The service is excellent. I liken it to living in the UK, although seeing the Sun a bit more often. Cheers... Dave.- 212 replies

Patrick - Got to love those Malta Spits.. yours is one of the better ones out there. Very well done. Tony - That Sword VC does really look the part, must get one of these very soon. Cheers.. Dave.

Airfix 1/48 Hurricane 1 - old tool (available now)
Rabbit Leader replied to Rabbit Leader's topic in Aircraft WWII
Funnily enough, I probably wouldn't have bothered asking this question a week ago, however I found a couple of half baked 1/72 Airfix Spitfire 1's in a box and decided to clean them up a bit. These are the original 1979 moulds with raised panel lines. I am finding these a welcome change from rescribing lost panel lines after construction and at a distance the smooth finish is probably more akin to a scale finish anyway. Best of all they also look the part and are quite a lot of fun. It will be hard to display these with Airfix's new 1/72 "deep panel lined" Spits. I was hoping that the 48 Hurricane may just be one of those classic kits that is rather basic, however accurate in shape and looks. Cheers and thanks or continuing this thread. .. Dave -
Per-war B & W underside Spitfire w-well colours?
Rabbit Leader replied to Rabbit Leader's topic in Aircraft WWII
Edgar, excuse me for sounding a trifle vague, however does this mean that prior to the XIX the wheel wells and doors were painted some other colour to Grey Green? Was it the undersurface colour or silver once again. I understand this is not an exact science, however it sounds like there are many more people here that are more knowledgable than I am on Spit colours. I for one would love to hear more. Cheers.. Dave. -
Per-war B & W underside Spitfire w-well colours?
Rabbit Leader replied to Rabbit Leader's topic in Aircraft WWII
That's a great photo Jennings. Must search a little harder. Looks like silver to me as well. Would be nice to know if a/c produced at the factory after the B&W scheme was introduced (early 1939?) were silver as well, or if the whole damn lot was sprayed in black and white respectively. I'm building two 1/72 kits at the moment (or until something else takes my fancy / interest), so one of each might be a nice change. Can't go wrong that way I suppose. Cheers. ..Dave. -
Airfix 1/48 Hurricane 1 - old tool (available now)
Rabbit Leader replied to Rabbit Leader's topic in Aircraft WWII
Brad, thanks for the feedback. Would be over the moon to get a Hasegawa Mk.1, however from what I hear and search, this is pretty hard to come by these days. Do you know where I can grab one?. Cheers... Dave, Brisbane. -
All, Just noticed the good old Hurricane Mk. 1 (1980 mould - I think) was available on the Airfix website. I had this kit as a 12 year old and recall it being quite nice, although a little chunky in places. Decal options on the box do not seem to match the Paint and Accessories guide as mentioned in the Airfix link below. To all those Hurricane fans - is this kit still an accurate build. Any noticable flaws that need mentioning? One thing is for sure - the boxart onlone should move it off the shelves. Cheers .. Per-war B & W underside Spitfire w-well colours?
Rabbit Leader replied to Rabbit Leader's topic in Aircraft WWII
Graham & Edgar, Many thanks for your quick replies. An aluminium / silver shade with the possibility of either black or white sounds like a better colour probability than Grey Green or some other "Pale Apple" Green shade - which I was also considering. Cheers from Oz.. Dave
