Is there such a thing as "Scale Gloss"?
Rabbit Leader replied to Rabbit Leader's topic in Aircraft WWII
Bill, While I think about it, I'm sure my LHS does not stock Floquil, however does have Alclad. My kit has several coats of Humbrol Clear which actually is very nice to use. Do you think the Alclad will go over the Clear without too many problems. I was thinking about giving it a blast with Humbrol Satin from a Rattle can as I was very happy with their Matt version. Cheers .. Dave. -

Is there such a thing as "Scale Gloss"?
Rabbit Leader replied to Rabbit Leader's topic in Aircraft WWII
All, Very appreciative of all your comments above. It's great to know that you can think of a question and expect to get some sound advice from modellers all over the world. I'm off to get some Satiny / semi gloss stuff as soon as the shops open.. Once again - thanks for all the tips and good advice.. Cheers.. Dave. -
Apologies if this question is not in the correct category / or has already been asked!. OK - we have all heard about the theory of Scale Colour, I was just wondering if the same applies to the overall sheen of an aircraft. Q - Is there such a thing as "Scale Gloss"? Lets take a subject like a RAF Gloss Sea Blue Neptune. In 1/72 scale would this look correct if a full gloss was applied - I am thinking probably not. Although stated as gloss, would a Semi-Gloss sheen be more appropriate? Does the percentage of gloss change with changes in scale? I am actually building a 1/72 Aussie Post-War Civilian Mustang that was painted overall Gloss Red. Link - http://grubbyfingersshop.com/index.php?main_page=popup_image&pID=216&zenid=bef6ebffd6c45464ee28f548eaca61b9 I've applied a number of coats of Humbrol Clear, however it looks too toy-like to me. I'm thinking that perhaps in 1/72 scale a Semi-Gloss sheen would be more akin to Full Gloss - not sure. Anyway, this topic may have already been discussed, however I have not been able to find anything on here to suggest so. Thanks for looking and / or answering. Cheers .. Dave.

They are some of the nicest Stangs ever seen on this website.. And there have been many beautiful kits shown.. I love all of them, however that Apache paintwork Olive Drab application is just outstanding.. Hopefully I will live long enough and practice long enough to achieve these types of results one day. Cheers.. Dave

Rabbit Leader replied to woody37's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
That's just gorgeous.. I really like all these RAF bombers your producing. Thanks for the tip on the paints used.. Might just be what we are all after. Looking forward to seeing some of the Resupply set milling around.. Not that it really needs it, however that will really bring this Welly to life. Congratulations on an excellent replica.. Cheers .. Dave -
This talk makes me wanna watch re-runs of Love thy Neighbour and the "Jehovah" scene from Life of Brian? The only thing that this world needs is a Good laugh (and an Airfix Beaufighter).. Cheers.. Dave.

That's a shame, you would think that should not harm the paint. I wonder how it reacts if applied straight over Humbrol Acrylic paint? Perhaps the "Clear" coat in between is enough to protect the surface. I still think ill purchase this product as their Matt variety works well. Might need to test it on a scrap piece first. Cheers.. Dave
-
Are you talking about the spray can variety or the one in the little bottle? If bottle, are you using an airbrush or applying with a paintbrush? I've been thinking about purchasing this product, however a few recent threads about its destructiveness is starting to put me off. I've used their Matt Arcyrlic Varnish from a spray can over Humbrol Clear and was very happy with the result. Thanks... Dave
-
Hey Stefan, That looks really nice.. If you dont mind me mentioning, I suggest that pehaps use a slightly lighter panel wash colour (like grey or dark brown) rather than stark Black. You will see noticable differences if using these shades instead. Airfix's deep panel lines (on this kit anyway) dont help you either... Congratulations on a great build.. Cheers .. Dave.
-
Can you please advise what Acrylic Varnish you actually used. Was it the Humbrol version. I have used Humbrol's new Clear & Humbrol Matt Varnish spray and have not had any adverse effects. I would be interest to know what the product actually was to hopefully avoid your unfortunate pitfalls. Cheers and hopefully you will recover your model back to full health soon. Dave

Airfix 1/48th MK XII Spitfire
Rabbit Leader replied to gazza l's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Not sure what it about the XII, it's kinda ugly and beautiful at the same time. Your build is exquisite, that great pilot is also a welcome edition, hardly seen in many of todays builds.. Hope mine turns out just as good.. Cheers.. Dave -
Airfix's new Harrier GR.1 - a build review
Rabbit Leader replied to Paul A H's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
That looks smashing... Mine has gone up on my list of " What the ell' do I build next" kits. I have to say that these new kits are actually cheaper than the already cheap listing price. I now am not as bothered about spending those extra dollars (pounds / euros / yen) on aftermarket decals as the cartograf decals and excellent subject matter are always tempting to build straight out of the box.. Who would have said that a few years ago.. Well done Airfix and roll on 2014 (Blenheim please!) Cheers.. Dave -
Supermarine Seafire FR.46 Airfix 1/48
Rabbit Leader replied to Arkady72's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Of all the new Airfix models on this website, this Seafire must rank up there with the very best.. Airfix should pay you a commission for all the Seafires they now sell after seeing this inspirational replica.. Excellent and very well done. Cheers.. Dave. -

Rabbit Leader replied to Ticketec's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
@rabbitleader, good to see that your only worried about the $20 for the needle and not the $$$ for the airfix bomber resupply set Thanks Dave The way things are going we might as well open joint bank accounts... Well that's what my wife reckons anyway?. Thanks for reminding me about the extra $$. That's a few more bucks I can get away with spending this weekend.. Did we actually settle on a price or how many slices of pizza that was worth?.. Another Lobster (that $20 in Aussie lingo) ought to do it. Cheers..
