Don't be daft - wouldn't we raid your modelling stash first!! Cheers.. Dave

Can I just say that although I've seen many sprue shots of this kit - I don't think anyone has truly captured the excellence of Airfix's latest offering. This is truly one of those kits that's better viewed in the flesh. Besides the 4 rather than 5 spoked wheels this kit must rate at a 9.75 / 10. Looking forward to the Metal winged version with 85 Sqd. decals. The Boxart snippet looks like it's gonna be another winner. Nice one.. Cheers.. Dave.

Just had a thought - does anyone remember if the 1/48 Javelin was hinted on last years Advent Calendar? If I remember correctly - I jumped up and down like a five year old boy when I saw this. Perhaps there's more surprises on their way. Who said Shackelton?? Cheers.. Dave

You better take a look at the "Airfix - A picture tells a 1000 words" thread. Your Tiger Moth and Gnat prayers have been answered by the Airfix gods.. Let's all bow now.. Cheers.. Dave.

We already have over 100 replies within 24 hours - one again the Airfix Marketing Machine rolls on.... The only sales I believe this will hamper is Airfix's re-released Italeri C-47, the AZ Model (I think) Tiger Moth, Special Hobby Blenhiems, Sword Spitfires and Revell's Do17Z. Wouldn't this be what Airfix is looking for - attracting the modelling pound / dollar from other model kit companies? I think its another winner past the post - now we just need those nice chaps at Xtradecal to read this and act accordingly. Cheers.. Dave

I actually think there's two guns in that Blenheim turret.. Although I'm not sure if my eyes are younger than yours? Would dearly love to see both Mk's 1 and IV, although they may even give us a V? Here's also hoping that the Spitfire is actually a VC. I'm hoping by those wheel covers it may be a better clue. There are so many VC's I'd like to do, that a new tool, accurate and cheap Airfix kit would certainly sell better than a VB. No sign of any popular Cold War jets - Meteors, Venoms, Single seat Vampires etc.. Perhaps 2015 There's certainly enough there to keep me happy, although I think (hope) there may be yet more to come. Cheers.. Dave

Tony, Try here.. Looks like you get options for both and I dare say you will get to build yours long before I even consider tackling mine! http://airfixtributeforum.myfastforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=280&t=32063 Cheers.. Dave

That's great news.. I really enjoyed last year, especially the sneak peek at the start.. Radial engined Lancaster - surely that can't be right!

I'm happy for these figures to be true. I'm one of those 5000, although I'm happy to wait if it means that this will send a real message to Airfix to start work on an earlier pointy fin, small tank version. May they get their digit out and please the masses... "Build it and they will come.. " Cheers.. Dave

Wasn't quite lucky to get the first three volumes, and am not prepared to pay the prices currently on offer. Hopefully they will be reprinted closer to June 2014? Luckily my birthday is in June, so if the Airfix Typhoon is out along with these books, it may be my best Birthday yet. Cheers.. Dave.

I've got both Cold War Sheild books waiting to be packed, plus have just ordered 2nd TAF volume 4 which was recently inspired by Airfix's big Tiff. Hopefully my two Airfix Hurricanes will arrive plus that pre-ordered F2A Lightning.. That will make it one kit and one book from each of the kids and the missus... What more could one want. Cheers and Merry Christmas to all.. I'll be thinking of you all whilst I swelter in the Aussie Heat ( I wonder how many tests we'll be up by then).. Dave.

1/72nd Airfix Hurricane Mk1
Rabbit Leader replied to crobinsonh's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
I love the way you have completed the cockpit.. I just might use this as a good reference for my build. Hopefully the Canopy is wide enough to slide back over the fuselage to show off your great work. Cheers .. Dave -
Troy, Great post.. Many thanks for all the useful links and offering suggestions to my question. It's always great to picks the brains of the many knowledgable folk on this website.. My New Years resolution is to donate some funds to the moderators in order to do my bit to keep this forum happening. Let me get over what is turning out to be a very expensive Christmas.. Cheers.. Dave.

I've been long awaiting this kit, especially since I bought Jim Chapman's history of No. 3 squadron decal sheet. Within this sheet there are 3 x Mk. 1 Hurricanes - L1934 OP-D Biggin Hill Summer 1939 P3143 QO-Z Kenley /Croyden March 1940 L1932 QO-S shot down in France 14 May 1940 I''m happy to assume that L1934 had Fabric wings and 2 blade prop, however can anyone else confirm the other two options. I'm especially interested in the later "Battle of France" option as this is a definite build for me. By the way - if you happen to find this sheet, don't hesitate just buy it - Xtradecal quality and superb options... Cheers.. Dave

Yeh - I'm really excited about this as well.. I think I can wait till January.. (Just) Cheers.. Dave

If there's one thing I envy about you Brits is the amount of Aircraft related museums and frequency of Airshows.. Not to mention your ability to purchase the new Airfix kits as soon as they are released (well at least we've got Mail order!). Anyway - I hope your Christmas gift comes off and am sure it will bring a smile to your grandfathers face. Make sure you post your end results here. Glad I could be of some help.. When I get around to building my Vampire, this is the scheme I'll be doing mine as well. Cheers.. Dave

Solar, Perhaps the Vampire was from No.45 Squadron (the flying camels)? The unit was based at Tengah during the fifties and sixties and to my knowledge operated at least two twin seat Vampires. If this is the case, it would be in the typical High Speed Silver with Yellow Trainer bands, similar to the scheme presented in the Airfix kit. If it's 1/72 scale your after then Xtradecals do a decal sheet which includes one of 45 squadrons Vampires. Take a look at the Hannants website for more info.. Cheers and I hope this helps.. Dave

Thanks Bill, I knew it went something like this.. I'm also pretty sure that the RAAF heavily waxed their Spitfires for that extra speed increase it apparently gave them. Although the weather conditions were pretty harsh, there are many published photos of RAAF Spitfires with a glossy appearance. As others have mentioned above - your best to check and double check your photographic references. Cheers.. Dave.

Airfix Model World Calendar -- a hint?

Graham, The Harrier GR.1 came out a few months before the GR.3 kit.. I should know - I've got both.. Cheers. Dave. -
Airfix Model World Calendar -- a hint?
Rabbit Leader replied to cmatthewbacon's topic in The Rumourmonger
That Lightning F.2A box art is different to the impending 1/72 scale kit... What do we make of that - another 1/24 kit for next year? I'm really looking forward to the new Tiger Moth.. Cheers .. Dave -
We just need a Mainstream Model Manufacturer (say Airfix) to update their moulds - then you would sell a zillion of these books (....well at least down where I live?). Detailed books on Avon Sabres are not that plentiful, so you could be on a real winner here. Make sure there’s plenty of nice colour artwork, as I believe this really enhances the overall content. Good luck Cheers.. Dave

Regarding Spits and Hurri's I would tend to go for a flat for your early war builds then add a slight sheen for your mid-late war versions. As above, there are many reasons why you would choose one over the other, however if I recall correctly, when I was a lad I read (and re-read) Michael JF Bowyers "Fighting Colours" and he suggested that the smoothness and glossiness of paints changed as the war progressed. Anyway - If you search somewhere here in the WW2 forum - I did post a similar topic titled "Is there such a thing as Scale Gloss". There were some excellent replies from the BM membership. Alclad have a range of about five Aqua Clears that start at Light Sheen to Flat. I reckon you could mix and match these to your hearts content to get the finish your after. Hope this helps... Dave

Thanks chaps, It never seemed to occur to me that Humbrol 98 would be a good choice for RAAF Earth Brown.. It's funny how some of these colours are right in your face and you seem to glance past the earlier Humbrol range.. I may take a second look at some of the others.. Any staple Humbrol equivalents for RAAF Foliage Green? Cheers .. Dave.

Although I'm basing my observations on a copy of a box top and some CAD diagrams, I would say that it's sort of the other way around. This Venom NF.3 mould looks like it's based on their earlier Sea Venom moulds - so all the above comments stand with more errors included. By the way - the Swedes never operated the NF.3 variant and no Venom was equipped with ejector seats. Cheers.. Dave
