Roden 1/48 Sea Gladiator mojo destroyer.....
Grey Beema replied to Grey Beema's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
Spent a couple more hours in the cave today. Progress was very slow and to be honest I think I did more harm than good. I did get a few things done though. Cockpit rear is now all installed. I need to fit the rear canopy to make sure it all fits correctly but this is what it looks like so far.. Even slower (almost glacial pace) on the Seafire. Tried to do a bit of the plumbing in the cockpit but I think I need to put the Instrument Panel in place to finish it off. I also strongly suspect that I am going to have fit issues with the seat frame. I should have checked that before mounting the seat... Anyway, a couple of pictures.. Undercarriage control. The lever was in the wheels up position so I cut it off and made a new one in the correct position for wheels down. Throttle & Radio control side Instrument Panel and Seat (only the lap belts fitted so far.. I need to straighten up those pedals.. The long lever is the radiator control lever.. Well that it, not much progress, the exciting bit is the painting, so I might hold off reporting progress until then.. Thanks for looking..- 80 replies

Here's my first seafire IIc
Grey Beema replied to corsaircorp's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
I am currently on the 1/48 SH Seafire II I have the SH Seafire III built (not quite finished) and have both the Airfix Seafire XVII & 47 making their way up the stash. I need the get hold of a Skua & a Fiirefly I to complete my WWII FAA Aces collection. The Airfix Sea Fury is a must so too their Shagbat. A great time for FAA modellers indeed.... -
I think I would have used the decals to make a stencil and the painted them on. Using a piece of masking tape, set the decals how you want them, then cut through using a new blade and a straight edge. Transfer that to the model as a stencil and then paint. I have used the technique before but usually on single letters or numbers...

1/72 Pavla/Octopus Seafire Mk III with Skyfarer Intrusions
Grey Beema replied to AlexN's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
As said earlier - My Pavla Seafire III got parked ages ago.. This is a far as I got before I lost the will to live.. In fact I converted a Revel Spitfire V into a Seafire II to get a 1/72 Seafire in the collection (and I really must finish that at sometime).. I have actually fitted the Instrument panel far to far forwards - it should be in line with the cockpit foremost cutout.. Hear is the SH 1/48 Cockpit frame with Armour plate and Seat mounts attached. Back Front This is the Seafire Instrument Panel 1:1 scale I made for my Cave Wall.. Arrestor Hook Warning light fits in the hole in the panel on the left side near the bottom..- 842 replies

Thanks for your kind words Alex but remember that my Seafire panel is in 1/48 so my wax crayon attempts are far easier than your 1/72. I did start the Pavla Kit but got fed up with it. I'll see if I can dig my one out later and send you a picture...- 842 replies

Not sure if it will help but take a look at my Seafire / Gladiator build there is a picture with the seat lying on the frame to the right of one picture. You can see the lightening holes in the frame.. I can take pictures later if any help..- 842 replies

Alex, Did you take a butchers at this? The Seafire III was basically a navalised Spitfire V so you can take most of the cockpit from the MKV. I think the only differences in the cockpit would be the arrestor hook lever, which is over on the right of the cockpit and on the Instrument panel the Arrestor Hook Warning light which would be on the left hand side above the elevator incidence indicator.. The radio would be different but in not sure the pilots controls would be..- 842 replies

That's a brilliant idea - why didn't I think of that!! 🤔 Add to that by drilling holes in a heavy piece of wood, just a little bigger than the pots so you can use it as a stand to support those little pots to stop them over balancing.. Like others on on here I also admire your perseverance. More power to you..

Spitfire seats were made of a kind of Bakerlite I think (after the MKII) and were a red/brown colour BUT I think the Seafire had a metal seat which I think was aluminium in colour (or did I just make that up? Try searching the forum because I am sure I've seen it on here somewhere..- 842 replies

Hi Alex, That's a great photo. Couple of other things, the seat is mounted to the frame and there should be an armoured plate behind the seat. The seat belts pass through the head armour and through an inertia real mounted on the frame. It is on your moulding I noticed. The seatbelt or a least a steel wire attached to the seatbelt then runs back into the fuselage to the anchoring point passing over that frame that sits at the very rear of the canopy. the fuselage behind the seat frame is painted aluminium. I might use that walk around to busy up my Seafire Cockpit. Got to get the plumbing right..- 842 replies

Roden 1/48 Sea Gladiator mojo destroyer.....
Grey Beema replied to Grey Beema's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
SO I took the Gladiator out of the box in August huh? Well a lot of time has passed which included a loss of mojo then a regaining of mojo.. As I have moved the photos around in Photobucket they are now missing from above post so lets do a recap.. Box art Messing with the parts that make up the Pegasus Engine.. Making up the Instrument Panel This is a great kit with a lot of etch involved but to be honest it kind of put me off. So it has sat in the box and I haven't really progressed. I lost my mojo... But routing around the stash the other day the Special Hobby 1/48 Seafire MkIIc was calling to me. I think this has reignited my Mojo, so this is going to be a dual build. I know that that means twice as much waffle but I'll try and keep it down... So now for an update. Gladiator first... Cockpit complete and installed. There is still etch to fit for the rear of the cockpit, seatbelts and the frame it the rear of the cockpit. I had trouble fitting the Instrument Panel. I had read that the panel was a little to big but it seemed to fit ok. it was only when i had joined the fuselage halves, and taped it up that I realised the panel had slipped down. In trying to push it back into position - yep I broke it. I had to take it apart, fix the panel and refit it. Its not right but hopefully it doesnt notice that much. it still needs a little paint but see what you think.. I also mounted the Throttle on tube rather than the etch - I think it looks better.. The Seafire is behind and will catch up over time.. Left side of fuselage WIP. Seat and cockip frames WIP. I decided not to use the Etch for the control panel but to paint it freehand. Compass frame yet to be painted.. So I'm a bit more mojo'd - Now to see if I have time next weekend to continue with the dual build...- 80 replies

1/72 Pavla/Octopus Seafire Mk III with Skyfarer Intrusions
Grey Beema replied to AlexN's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
Strangely it is the etch that put me off. The Instrument panel makes up really nicely. I actually scratched up the Throttle mounting and TBH it looks better than the etch (even if I say so myself) . I then kind of lost the buzz, too much etch and not clear where it goes. So yesterday I started the SH 1/48 Seafire IIc. I'm doing the Operation Torch version as it has a combination of British Roundels and US Stars. By kicking off the Seafire and waiting for the overall aluminium paint to dry (I start by spraying all the parts on the spruce aluminium) I fitted the cockpit in the Gladiator and joined the fuselage. Looking into the fuselage the IP had slipped, in trying to put it right I broke it, had to rip everything apart and start again. So when you do yours you need to shave about 1 mm off the IP to get it to fit (do this before messing everything up!). I'll post a picture later when I have the rest of the etch in place.. Gladiator is going to be that of LtCmdr Keighly-Peach who inboxed a few Gladiators and a few Swordfish pilots and created a Fighter section for his Carrier in the Med... sorry about that - back to your Seafire..- 842 replies

Interesting I was reading that too and the website behind it re aeroplanes that "crashed" in neutral Ireland. Apart from the fact that the British replaced all the Irish Air Corps "liberated" Hurricanes with new ones for them, I noticed that a lot of the German bodies that were recovered were buried in Glencree German Military Cemetry. Now Glencree is in the Dublin mountains about half an hour from where I live - so MrsGB and myself are going up there later to take a look..- 842 replies

No worries - save them. I'm currently working on the Roden 1/48 Sea Gladiator and (because the Gladiator was wrecking my mojo) the 1/48 SH Seafire II. Keep them likes for the 'sympathy vote' if I put up a WIP....- 842 replies

I'm suffering from the same issue myself, wide awake.... Luckily today in Ireland is a Bank Holiday. The Gardai tweeted the best issue around the time change. "Remember the clocks go back tomorrow morning at 0200. So if you want to record something on C4+1 that starts at 0200 on C4 you need an honours degree in maths..."😂- 842 replies

Looks really good. It's definitely a Seafire. Well done. Great addition to your collection.. I started on my SH 1/48 Seafire II yesterday. I hope it comes out as well as this... -

Grey Beema replied to 825's topic in Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (MTO) WW2 GB
You might want to paint in light coloured disks under the fuselage roundel and tail marking as well - just so the DSG/EDSG/Sky demarcation doesn't show through the white section of the decal (don't ask me how I know this)... -

Remember what I said about the decals being thin. You don't want the demarcation showing through... -
