  1. It was credited with shooting down a Mig-17 in October 1966, the second Mig 'kill' by USN A-1s during the Vietnam war.
  2. More done and we're ready for priming. Wings were added without too much hassle. I've spent a bit of time looking at the wire set up. I settled on the need to add an antenna on the wing, beside the DF loop and I threw on a small bit of scrap etch on the fuselage, which is where the wire will end up. Engines masked up and then the clear parts given a squirt of interior green. Hope to get the primer on tomorrow and then start spraying the base layers in preparation for black paint. Plan to use the 'hairspray method' for the paint weathering. More soon Dave
  3. Thanks Dan, haven't seen that before so I'll add it to my reference folder!
  4. So the J seat straight into the H tub is suitable? I have the Brassin shroud for behind the seat to add. The machine I’m depicting pre dates the Yankee system on USN aircraft. Seat added to back order and I’ll have a look at the wheels too!
  5. Didn't know they did one for the H as I couldn't see it in any UK stores!
  6. Lovely work! I've just started Tamiya's A-1H in USN guise.Your detailing is exceptional, something I can only dream of!
  7. Glad it is so! If you pick up a get, I may end up with some extra decals that you can have
  8. That’s good to know, the GWH kit does look good. If you’re able to point out errors on the GWH kit from the pictures, could you then elaborate on the Academy errors that you mention? I’m sure there are many on here who would be interested to know, especially if they have the kit in their stash.
  9. The hobby is also about helping other modellers out, giving advice and assisting with queries. That’s what this forum is all about. Some modellers don’t have access or knowledge to measure, assess and determine all these basic measures you mention and just like to know if kits have any issues so they can make an informed decision based on their personal circumstances be it cost, options in the kit, decals, ease of build, number of parts or indeed a combination of these. You say the GWH kit will be a joy, yet you criticised it early in this thread. Again as modellers we should be able to make informed decisions based on other modellers’ input from seeing plastic in the flesh or their build experience.
  10. Thanks James, good to know! Just found Quickboost do replacement cowlings too. I’ll know that for next time!
  11. Cheers Craig. Feels like an achievement getting all the kablooey stuff done first!
  12. Cheers Craig! Careless on my part, but replacements are only a fiver so can't complain too much. Those are the decals I have, looks like a 5A on the schemes, but research suggests that it is a 5.
  13. Could you not just tell fellow modellers what this issue is instead of being cryptic in both of your posts?
  14. Made a start on this one, albeit very brief - ordnance! I had initially planned to add the 2000lb WWII era bombs that come with the kit but having studied a few images and cross referencing with the Osprey book, I could only see 1000lb bombs being carried on the inner wing stations so I pulled out a couple of MK.83s from the spares to go with the MK.81s and the 2.75in FFAR (Folding Fin Aerial Rocket) pods that come with the kit. It also looks like the larger drop wing with the fins was carried on the centre line so I opted for that. The pylons between the FFARs and MK.81 will be empty as again, this seemed quite common. More soon. Dave
  15. A little more done. Firstly, a set of Brassin Torpedos arrived: Builds up relatively well, just a bead of PPP round the join. I'm not au fait with the rear fin layout of particular versions of Torpedos so I just went with the 'ring' around the fins. I then had to throw together some sort of pylon to hang it. Found a couple of 1/48 bomb shackles in the spares box which fit very nicely: Excuse the roughness of the surface, black plastic isn't my favourite . Fuselage next and the seam lines mentioned earlier in the thread were a bit trickier to tidy up that I'd first hoped - some detail has been lost but I think under a heavily weathered black surface, it won't be overly noticeable. Cockpit and masking also added. My plan, perhaps unconventionally and one which may make the purists gasp, is to add the main undercarriage then the wings for ease of painting. I'll be going with black U/C - think it's a bit of creative licence here as I've seen images of what looks like white, green and black undercarriage. Take your pick! On another note, it looks like VP, later VPB-11, used PBY-5s as opposed to 5As: https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/was-catalina-30-a-pby-5-or-a-pby-5a.51503/ Spanner in the works. There is a decal set from Printscale that has a 5A Black Cat included. It's a bit pricey though so I'll need to decide what to do - keep to the original plan, knowing it's inaccurate, or splash a score on a decal sheet for a bit of nose art Finally, I make a bit of a foul up in that I've binned some plastic which had the the hubs of the props on it. So I've props but no hubs. Great. Luckily Quickboost do a set of resin props so I'll need to order those up. Hoping to get the main undercarriage and wings fitted at the weekend. Dave
  16. You're not wrong! Would like to a Coastal Command example and maybe an RAAF one too. I've noted Wolfpack did some nice boxings but rather hard to get now it seems! I didn't actually think of comparing it with one of the Lancs I have! Thanks Alex!
  17. I can't help myself . I've since bought 3 books just for this build!
  18. Just caught up on this one Craig, very nice work!
  19. That would spoil the good looks! Cheers Craig! Think you're right, looks like more of a minefield than the FAA Corsair
  20. Thanks James, will be able to weather those areas slightly differently. Good progress over the last couple of days. The wings were assembled, cowlings (although wrong I'm led to believe) added and exhausts fitted. I'm quite surprised at the wingspan, even in 1/72! The retracted floats fit very well, as do the outer wing sections to the main piece. The cowlings were a bit iffy, needing a little bead of PPP just to tidy them up. That was then set aside and the fuselage closed up. I had added the fuselage blisters prior. Again, a pretty good fit, the only exceptions being around the ventral gun door and just aft of the front turret, nothing a little spue goo won't fix. Starting to look like something! And that goodness for Eduard masks Bombs also built up - a bit fiddly for my ham fists with a thick seam line needing tidied up. Finally, I've been looking at various images, well from the few that I can find, of 'Black Cats' and PBY-5As in general. Could anyone advise if part A21 highlighted below is in the correct place? I've seen images of a probe/mast on top of the tail, from which some wire/cable is leading to each wing and somewhere(?) on the centre section of the wing, or possibly on top of the cockpit? From watching the video posted at the start of the thread and linked by Craig above, some shots show a mast on top of the tail and between the blisters, other images show the latter missing. Just trying to get an idea of where to place my EZ line when the time comes . Again, I can't get a definitive answer from the Squadron reference book. Lots of questions, I know but I've no clue about PBYs 🙃Oh well, one more won't hurt ... does anyone know where I could get a 1/72 Torpedo that would be suitable for this build? The video shows two bombs starboard and a 'tin fish' on the port wing. Looks very cool! More soon. Dave
  21. A bit of blue here and there along with some aluminium etc would make it nice and worn looking. Will see what I can come up with.
  22. Thanks Craig, will be able to mix up the weathering a little if the original colours are there too!
  23. I've built the ZM and Meng kits in the last number of months. Personally, I prefer the ZM kit, although as stated above, you'll need a slat conversion for a late model. My (non expert!) comparisons are listed toward the end of the Meng thread. ZM - Meng - Dave
  24. Snap! Had seen that video and included it in the first post! Love the commentary! I think I'll go ahead and fit them, adds a bit of interest and I can't confirm either way so anyones guess . I picked up a copy of Osprey's PBY units in the Pacific for a few quid off eBay so will see if that sheds anymore light. I also can't conclude if the black was applied over the blue/white paint or straight onto the metal. Any ideas? Also, am I right in saying the control surfaces were covered in fabric?
